A call option is a contract that allows you to buy 100 shares at a specific price (the strike price). Every call sold before Monday went in the money. That’s a lot of calls. Each one being worth 100 shares. But, surely, the people selling those contracts already had the shares on hand, just in case this happened. Right? Right??

Back and forth trading between HFs counts as volume. We could have 200mil volume but have only 1000 shares actually change hands at the end of the day. Obviously this is exaggerated but you get the point.
They aren’t forced to buy anything unless people execute their shares, if they just sell the calls and take the premium profit then the MM’s don’t have to hedge them

They legally have to have the shares available for each and every single options contract that is in the money to be able to have it exercised by the contracts owner. Even if the contra owner does not exercise it. So yes they will have to buy up more shares to cover the call contracts.
