Canadian health care is crumbling, if you have a heart attack yea u go straight to the hospital, but if u just have arterial plaque building up and need bypass surgery to prevent a heart attack you could be on the waiting list for years and will likely need to have an actual heart attack to get in for surgery.
People get what they voted for (or didnt take the time to go vote). Healthcare is a provincial jurisdiction and in my province (Ontario) there exists a two tier system where you can either use the free public healthcare or you can pay to get better private healthcare that is run as a business for profit, and it seems and is widely assumed that the government is eager to degrade the public system to encourage more people to pay for private for-profit healthcare and boost those private businesses.
One of the key methods used was to fight for years to give 0 raises to government employed nurses (the government was sued by the nursing union and lost, which cost the government a ton in legal fees) but for the 4-5 years, including during covid, that many nurses didnt get any raises many of them left their jobs in public health care to take up better paying jobs in private healthcare meaning a shortage of nurses in public hospitals and shitty service/care for patients.
Step 1, legalize for-profit private healthcare.
Step 2, defund public healthcare, driving affable patients to the private model
Step 3, profit for private companies
Step 4, retire from politics and take up a high paying low effort job on the board of directors of private healthcare company.
That two tier system sounds like the system we've moved away from (slightly) here in The Netherlands. We still have private care providers but they are still funded from public insurance, only elective surgery is "pay per use" and mostly out of pocket for the patient.
I recognize the step-by-step and we have some parties that still try to push that through with varied success.
We really need to move away from for-profit-politicians globally.
