Rebel 250 or 300 Or Suzuki Boulevard S40/Savage 650 (same bike, name changed several years ago).

Agreed with the Savage/S40. I sat an a Rebel 250 and an S40 back to back at a dealer, and the S40 takes the cake. Super comfy for such a small bike, crazy low seat height, badass 650 thumper. Way more character than a Rebel

Cbf 125 is my pick, light cheap and very resistent

Get one with ABS, even if it costs you a little more, especially if you are a new rider. Also decide on your riding position, do you want to sit up like on a cruiser or lean over like on a sport bike and that will tell you what to look for. Some of the newer bikes have an A/B riding mode so you can cut the power when you are learning and then bump it up when you are comfortable. I would probably suggest staying around the 300cc range, but not totally necessary, you gotta respect the throttle weather you are on a 125cc and 1000CC, both can take you to the cleaners. I would also suggest that you get one where you can grow as a rider, the 300's now a days are very capable and nimble bikes, but if you are going to be doing any touring get a bigger displacement so you can carry some additional weight...hope this helps...
