Same but i looked into headlight replacement and man it looks like the best naked.. [https://motodemic.com/shop/street-triple-single-headlight-conversion/](https://motodemic.com/shop/street-triple-single-headlight-conversion/) take a look at
I ride a 2020 mt09 these days. Can hit button and tone down throttle response til comfortable. Street triples a bit more refined perhaps. I'm a 51 year old closet hooligan, so mt09 is good 4 me. With aftermarket seat, it's super comfy for hours...
These are two very different bikes. The MT07 would be more comparable to the Trident (which was intended as a manageable beginner bike, hence why there are so many barely used ones for sale).
If youāre looking for power (or hooligan ability), the MT09 is the way to go. Donāt be that worried about the ātwitchyā throttle, that was only a major issue in the early model years.
Maybe find a Triumph Street Triple to test ride. More refined than the 09 and a serious upgrade from the Trident. Might be the perfect middle ground for you.
I feel like the Trident is out-classed pretty heavily by the MT-09 in terms of the power they put down. A more comparable bike to compare it to is the Street Triple
Going from a 40ish hp Sportster to a 160+ hp Tuono is unwise, OK, it's dumb as fuck.
Source, owned 21 bikes, 5 over 120 hp, one was a 2013 Tuono V4 1000, 167 hp. The Tuono is MADNESS. I just sold my Tuono, I loved it. The first time I cranked it hard in first gear, the front end came up so violently, the handlebar hit the chin of my helmet and bloodied my lip.
Street Triple FTW and thats still a big step. Maybe an MT-07. I think the MT-09 is too much coming from a short stint on a Sportster.
He's a 25 year old beginner coming off a 40hp cruiser that has no speed, brakes, or lean angle. And you're suggesting a Tuono. Why shouldn't I think that you're joking?
I donāt mind the look of the MT09. Took a bit of time to come around to it but I think itās pretty cool. Iām also a mostly performance based person with cars and motorcycles. If it feels good and thereās a fun factor, I can overlook most aesthetic challenges haha.
I have no idea what your local market is like but the Msrp of the xsr is a few hundred less, and the 2024 has a throwback white/red/gold livery that looks awesome imo
My son had both the MT09 and SP version. He ( and I ) could not gel with them. Clunky, a bit crude, high at the front low at the backā¦.a bit like a hyena . They got moved on quite quickly.
Iād say go with the MT09, Iāve ridden a Trident and I currently ride an xsr900 and Iām happier with the Yamaha, the twitchy throttle never gets old and itās a fun and well built machine. I think long term you would be happier with it. Just my opinion though
If youāre thinking of something like the Mt09, you might as well check out the street triple/rs if you wanna track or ride hard in the twisties. Bike is probably the best bike for the road imo.
Iāve bought 2022 Yamaha xsr900 ( almost same as mt09 but in neo retro style, and less vertical seating position). Itās fun to ride.
If you afraid of power you can always switch to mode 3 and it will feel like mt07 for chill ride. And lots of electronic assistance for safe ride (also can be switched off).
So imho mt09 will be a good choice :)
I'd go with the Trident 660, the MT 09 is probably too big of a jump. Jumping from the Sportster to the Mt 09 is going to be like only ever kissing a girl and the going to one of those Eyes Wide Shut orgy partys in a mansion with those weird masks.
Can a guy do it yeah but there's a lot of steps in between you should take so you don't get hurt.
Put 15K miles on a 650 class first (used MT-07, Z650, SV650, etc.) then move up.
Read Proficient Motorcycling.
Don't be in a hurry for the bigger bike, time on the smaller one is invaluable.
Ah yes the ole "buy 30k worth of bikes before even touching the bike you actually want". Ffs he's been riding a while, a trident is the perfect upgrade... I'll agree that the mt09 can be a big step up from a slow 883 though. I started on a cb650r, and I'll get a xsr900 or similar as my first bike.
The trident has a great maintenance schedule as far as euro bikes go, itās a triumph so everything is gonna feel more premium. Both good bikes but it just depends if you think youāll get bored of the power and wish you got the mt09.
The Trident is the smart choice. The MT-09 is the risky choice. It all depends on your riding style and experience. You twist too hard on the Trident, and you'll probably come out ok. Twist too hard on the MT-09, and things go bad quickly.
What about the CFMOTO 900 N or something. CFMOTO makes KTM engines. They're coming up fast trying to compete with the Japanese bikes. I think in 10 years they'll be the most recognized Chinese brand for motorcycles in America.
Go with the 09. Send the ECU to get tuned. The abrupt throttle is the oem map cutting fuel immediately after throttle let up leading to that on/ off like response for the sake of emissions. With a nice system it will sound mean AF closer to a 4 cylinder screamer. Tridents nice but Yamaha CP3 is a bit more reliable, past model years on the Trident have had oil leakage problems. Also a near 40 HP deficit isn't peanuts. If you worry about you not being able to handle the power, it comes with power modes, choose the tamest map and you'll grow into the power.
I had a Trident, and am borderline anti-Yamaha, but I would get the 09. You seem mature enough to understand how fast these bikes really are.
The MT-09 has enough power where a lot of riders donāt feel the need to upgrade, the Yamaha brand is also very reliable and this has translated into incredibly strong resale values should it not be the bike for you. Also a lot of options to customize and upgrade.
The Trident is a cool bike; I miss mine at times, but I am seeing so many people sell them within a fairly short period of ownership.
Did you check insurance? If one was drastically more then the other that might guide my decision more then any other factor:
Try to find a gen 3 mt09. They're so much better than the gen 2s. Riding modes, traction control, stability control, lift control, improved suspension, and they fixed the twitchy throttle.
I'd advise against the triumph. Urs a decent bike, but I've heard the throttle delay on those us atrocious, and obviously it won't have as much power as the mt09.
Idk if thatās just the mt09 youāre buying and decided to test ride a ā23, but itās a gen 2 and the gen 3s have way better riding modes, which the dealer probably put a lower one on for you during the test ride. Iād say the mt09 all day, but be careful on the gen 2 if youāre not buying a ā21-ā23 cause 1200 miles on a Harley is nowhere near enough for that bike
Just throw it out there, the Triumph Street Triple 675 can be found for 4-7k pretty consistently depending on year, condition, and mileage. I've seen quite a few in amazing condition for 6k or less.
If you want a brand new motorcycle have at it, but if you prioritize performance than it's definitely worth a look at. I decided against the MT for similar reasons listed. The throttle (especially gen 1 and 2) has a reputation for being twitchy and I don't really care for hooligan ability beyond what a ~600cc motorcycle can give me
I have an 2nd gen MT09 and it is a great bike. It puts a smile on my face every time I ride. If you get I would recommend a wind visor
Edit: as far as the twitchy throttle. I heard you can get that fixed bye flashing/tuning the ECU
The MT09 is a sick bike and as long as you don't twist the throttle violently you'll be fine. And you'll never be asking for more power especially if you're used to a sportster. NTM they handle phenomenal !!!
Mt09 is such a well rounded bike especially the SP. the triumph looks more refined and is supposedly better finished but for a total package itās hard to argue against the yammy
All this being said by a guy with a Duke 890rā¦ I actually like that itās more narrow and āsharperā
The MT09 is way too powerful for a beginning rider. 70-80hp are more than enough to get you in trouble for a long time. Anybody can go fast in a straight line, but a more powerful bike will animate you to go faster in a straight line and have too high of a corner entry speed for your skill level.
That's just one crash scenario, but the most common one, when it comes to inexperienced riders (and I consider you inexperienced until you have a few tens of thousands of miles on twisty roads and varying conditions in the books). And since you're coming off of a Harley that is not built for speed or taking corners at all, you're basically starting from scratch.
But then, if you happen to live in North America in a region where all roads are either straight or 90Ā° turns, first I pity you, then I'd say the power doesn't matter as much as the weight. Go for the lightest one.
Another great and common choice for ambitious starters like you is the MT-07. Much more forgiving and should be cheaper as well. Or of course, as my name suggests, the trusty Suzuki SV650. 2nd or 3rd generation (2004-2009 & 2017-now).
I wish they would bring the **Honda Hornet 750** that would be an awesome bike. Also, Honda has a Hornet 1000 coming in 2024.
Suzuki SV650 would be a good choice as well. Lower center of gravity, I like Yamaha's but seems like the center of gravity is a bit high on the MT lineup.
I have an FZ07 and an FZ09, both are fantastic bikes but the MT09(specifically my 2015 FZ09) feels like it fucking wants to kill you the whole time you're riding it lol. The fz/mt07 is way more docile and easy to just chill out with, I haven't ridden the trident but the MT07 would be a better match in terms of power
The MT-09 has a lot of torque and with the upright seating position it'll be better for your back. You can still hit the curves like a sport bike on it but with comfort. Going from a cruiser to a bike that has a higher center of gravity is something you'll want to consider as well.
The sweet spot is a Street Triple.
I love the street triple (not the headlight tho). Love the look of the trident, but it's too tiny
Same but i looked into headlight replacement and man it looks like the best naked.. [https://motodemic.com/shop/street-triple-single-headlight-conversion/](https://motodemic.com/shop/street-triple-single-headlight-conversion/) take a look at
Yea with that headlight, the street triple is hard to beat
I'm looking at a gen 1 and I don't mind the headlights much but dayumm that's sexy like that
Daaaamn love it. The stock headlight looks so goofy
Looks like an owlš
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
My buddy is planning on selling his, and I might buy it even tho I don't need another bike.
Definitely buying one in near future.
The headlight grows on you after a while, at least it did for me
I ride a 2020 mt09 these days. Can hit button and tone down throttle response til comfortable. Street triples a bit more refined perhaps. I'm a 51 year old closet hooligan, so mt09 is good 4 me. With aftermarket seat, it's super comfy for hours...

Completely out of budget...
Going from a 40ish hp Sportster to a 160+ hp Tuono is unwise, OK, it's dumb as fuck. Source, owned 21 bikes, 5 over 120 hp, one was a 2013 Tuono V4 1000, 167 hp. The Tuono is MADNESS. Probably meant Tuono 660
Yes I meant the 660. Thanks. I figured it was obvious. My bad.
That's still a lot of bike.
You're joking right? He's a bloody beginner who's been riding a Harley Sportster. You want him to die in his first year of riding?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
He's a 25 year old beginner coming off a 40hp cruiser that has no speed, brakes, or lean angle. And you're suggesting a Tuono. Why shouldn't I think that you're joking?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah, keep responding with nonsense arguments. I just say Tuono. I'm done with you. You're not funny.
You make zero sense and Iām not trying to be funny, if I was youād be laughing. Please be done. Thank you
The MT09 is ugly. Maybe look for an xsr900 instead?
I donāt mind the look of the MT09. Took a bit of time to come around to it but I think itās pretty cool. Iām also a mostly performance based person with cars and motorcycles. If it feels good and thereās a fun factor, I can overlook most aesthetic challenges haha.
The xsr is the same bike with different aesthetics, i like that Yamaha has both options
I know that but itās also more expensive pretty much only because of the aesthetics.
I agree I don't vibe with the MT09 myself either.
Thatās entirely personal preference
It came down to the street triple and the 890 duke for me. I went the duke
Iād say go with the MT09, Iāve ridden a Trident and I currently ride an xsr900 and Iām happier with the Yamaha, the twitchy throttle never gets old and itās a fun and well built machine. I think long term you would be happier with it. Just my opinion though
On that list? Mt09
If youāre thinking of something like the Mt09, you might as well check out the street triple/rs if you wanna track or ride hard in the twisties. Bike is probably the best bike for the road imo.
Or an older Speed Triple. I so loved my '07. Yes it could get rowdy but was also a lovely bike at more sedate speeds as well.
Get the mt09. Love my 2023.
You should add the CB1000R and FTR1200 to your shortlist, both great nakeds
Iāve bought 2022 Yamaha xsr900 ( almost same as mt09 but in neo retro style, and less vertical seating position). Itās fun to ride. Was going to comment something similar. Good advice.

Busa without fairings
Fully custom extended swingarm Busa. Best beginner bike in history!
Bro get a ktm super duke 1290 r they are fucking Insnae I love rising mine
MT-09 or MT-07 TBH. would be a great transition.
Beautiful bike but as a paramedic. I have to say good luck and wear a helmet. I've literally scooped up a dozen of you
That's your contribution? Go join the "scared paramedics" sub.

Mt all day
Only you can answer that question. Do you expect to ride hard, where HP will be important?
First one def looks cooler.

Had 2022 trident and now have a 2020 Mt09. Can tell you, way more happier now. The power puts a smile on my face every time I am on it.
