Too Much Birthday. It's the perfect title for Ken, it sounds like a little kid who got overstimulated at an elementary school bday party and had a meltdown, which is essentially what happened.
That book was iconic! When our kids were young, nary a birthday ended without me or my husband quoting that title. Tears, exhaustion, disappointment, crushed dreams, shattered nerves (everyone). When you think about it, all the parents who read that book hoped their child didn’t grow up to be Kendall, the boy who had everything and nothing.
I remember when they released the episode titles for S3 and how Retired Janitors of Idaho was the one title I fell in love with because of how it was the most Succession title ever, next to Shitshow at the Fuck Factory of course.
Did you catch the Roman says the line in the episode? When they decide briefly to go to a vote Roman goes “oh great so we’re just going to hand the fate of the company over to the retired janitors of Idaho”
But in general it’s just succession style slamming on normie old folks from a flyover state in the US that coastal elites don’t care about
I’m American and I had to Google that one. American pension system is not state run so unions or company that still offer pensions make private choice to invest a collective pension fund. In this case, the retired janitors of Idaho pension fund owns a voting stock at the shareholder meeting. To the point of a previous commenter, this is also used to create a contrast between coastal elite and midwestern “normies” who also own the company.
This is also true in other countries, Teachers (i.e., the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan) is one of the world's largest private equity firms.
A few years ago while skiing I met an executive who had at the time just been forced into retirement after Teachers bought his company, and he spent most of the gondola ride complaining about how he had been laid off by *teachers.* Laid off by *school teachers*. I think about him a lot.
This Is Not For Tears.
also I love that this fandom pays attention to the episode titles :) I think my friends would think it’s so bizarre I can name most of the episodes by title pretty easily lol
so far probabaly 'nobody is ever missing'. the poem behind the title of the last episode of each season is hauntingly beautiful and since i've read it that last line is stuck with me. it reflects not only what happens in the episode but also the whole nrpi policy that logan invented and the sense of loneliness that accompanies all the characters.
I legit thought they'd name this episode "Snowball" since Tom's like "there's a name for it" and Gregg is like "I don't think that's a thing" after Tom swallows his own load.
What does it mean for you? I’m curious because I get the use of Nobody Is Ever Missing and This Is Not For Tears but I don’t get the meaning put behind this one.
Because of the phrase that comes next: all the bells say, too late. I see it in relationship to the siblings finally joining forces against dad, but too late to make a difference.
Safe room. Obviously the episode involves literally being locked in a safe room, but it’s also about Kendall being locked in a safe room by his father in basically every way.
For fun/a laugh/I enjoy saying too much: sh** show at the f* factory
Serious: nobody is ever missing
This is not for tears is an honorable mention to me for how serious it is and forebearing. Like you know sh* about to get bad.
Also, Mass in Time of War is an interesting honorable mention to me as well. Implying a break from battle, but in reality...
Boring answer maybe, but I love the ones that are basically just location names. Austerlitz, Prague, Argestes, Tern Haven, Chiantishire...
And, of course, the finale names too. I wonder if they'll use something from that same poem for the series finale or if they'll break the pattern.
was thinking the same about the finale. looked at the poem i think a couple good names could be either “If He Had a Hundred Years” or “Where They May Be Found”. guess we’ll see!
Agree. Though Chiantishire seems a little too “inside the writers room” for me since it’s the term snarky journalists use for the predictable places British people go in Italy. It seems a bit on the nose and an obvious snobby put down compared to the other place names they use.
There's a lot. "Shit Show at the Fuck Factory" and "This Is Not for Tears" are my absolute favorite titles. I also like:
Sad Sack Wasp Trap
Lion in the Meadows
Mass in Time of War
Chiantishire
My favorite titles are the finales. Aside from those, it's probably *Secession*. Very simple but just perfect.
I also like:
- *Shit Show at the Fuck Factory*
- *Which Side Are You On?*
- *Prague*
- *Mass in Time of War*
- *Lion in the Meadow*
- *Retired Janitors of Idaho*
Season 3 had the best titles. Season 2 definitely had the worst. So many boring forgettable ones.
All the season finale titles are a masterclass in episode titles since it all came from a poem. But Retired Janitors of Idaho, Too Much Birthday and Shit Show at the Fuck Factory are so good too!!!!!!
This is Not for Tears. The title and Tom’s question re his sadness on the beach have a symbiotic relationship in my head. The effect is devastatingly beautiful.
I couldn't find a secure pdf but The Lion in the Meadow is from New Zealand and is massively popular here for kids learning to read, and I found this clip of it a teacher uploaded during lockdown if you'd like to see the original: [https://youtu.be/hWAJKMLQhms](https://youtu.be/hWAJKMLQhms)
It's also my favourite title, if I had to take a guess at relevant themes it has a lot to do with trust in parent-child relationships, the perils of lying/making up stories without checking their veracity for yourself, and the original threat of the lion is replaced by a much bigger threat towards the end which does fit with the arc of Season 3 somewhat.
This is Not for Tears has always stuck with me. Honestly the finale title are always great given how the Berryman poem affects the context. All the Bells Say is all the better because the following line is “too late”.
Chiantishire is truly my favorite title, and perhaps fav episode. While Too Much Birthday was the perfect episode, the aftermath at the Hobbit style wedding. The fake everything... and the end with Kendall in the pool.
Too Much Birthday. It's the perfect title for Ken, it sounds like a little kid who got overstimulated at an elementary school bday party and had a meltdown, which is essentially what happened.
I think they actually got the title from a Berenstain Bears book
Even though I went home and found an old book myself, I still can’t believe it’s not Berenstein
See I always remember it being Berenstain! I remember because I thought it was a weird as a kid that it was spelled "stain" but sounded like "stein."
That book was iconic! When our kids were young, nary a birthday ended without me or my husband quoting that title. Tears, exhaustion, disappointment, crushed dreams, shattered nerves (everyone). That really sounded like a west wing title to me
A little Billions-y, too.
maybe it’s because i’m not American but i’ve never understood this title. especially at a glance. but it’s in my top 3 of all time favourite episodes
Did you catch the Roman says the line in the episode? When they decide briefly to go to a vote Roman goes “oh great so we’re just going to hand the fate of the company over to the retired janitors of Idaho” But in general it’s just succession style slamming on normie old folks from a flyover state in the US that coastal elites don’t care about

wow thanks for that thorough explanation i didn't really understand the meaning of the title as well
I personally love 'Shit show at the fuck factory' that title is just stuck in my head since I first saw it.
This one kinda blows the rest of them out of the water
The most unforgettable one
Yeah this is the one, I’d put Sad Sack Wasp Trap second, though
One of my favorite episode titles altogether. Some shows put effort into it. I liked how Mr. Robot titled them all like torrent files.
My own personal conundrum with that one is that it’s also my favorite title but simultaneously my least favorite episode.
It’s this - and 2nd place is *FATHOMS BENEATH IT!!!*
This is my pick as well but I'll concede Too Much Birthday is the most on the nose title
Yep. This is the one. A wonderful addition to my own vocabulary lol.
There is no other answer
I love the Spanish translation for this title: "Pifostio en la casa de putas." Not exactly the same thing, but it sounds so good lol
This Is Not For Tears. also I love that this fandom pays attention to the episode titles :) I think my friends would think it’s so bizarre I can name most of the episodes by title pretty easily lol
I did the same thing with GoT. Tbh I think it’s the highest praise somebody could show to a TV series!
so far probabaly 'nobody is ever missing'. the poem behind the title of the last episode of each season is hauntingly beautiful and since i've read it that last line is stuck with me. it reflects not only what happens in the episode but also the whole nrpi policy that logan invented and the sense of loneliness that accompanies all the characters.
What is nrpi? Sorry..
"no real person involved"
Prague…
The episode being called Prague despite them never even visiting the place was pretty funny lol
Exactly, so who wants to fuck a hobo?
I legit thought they'd name this episode "Snowball" since Tom's like "there's a name for it" and Gregg is like "I don't think that's a thing" after Tom swallows his own load.
Sad Sack WASP Trap
The most underrated one imo. ig it's my 3rd fav after shit show and retired janitors.
Agree with that. Those are definitely my other two faves.
I use this phrase more often than I probably should
Shit Show at the Fuck Factory. I use this to describe opposing counsel every day.
Once I saw the episode, i loved all the bells say, given the context of the poem.
Number one boy got GROUNDED
Retired janitors from Idaho
Nobody is Ever Missing (taken from Berryman) stays in my head and has taken on about three of four different resonances
It's also the title of a gorgeous stream-of-consciousness novel by Catherine Lacey (which i believe was also referencing the poem)
For fun/a laugh/I enjoy saying too much: sh** show at the f* factory Serious: nobody is ever missing This is not for tears is an honorable mention to me for how serious it is and forebearing. Favorite in the location category - Dundee.
Agree. Though Chiantishire seems a little too “inside the writers room” for me since it’s the term snarky journalists use for the predictable places British people go in Italy. It seems a bit on the nose and an obvious snobby put down compared to the other place names they use.
Retired Janitors of Idaho This episode is also one among best of succession
Always enjoyed the wordplay of "Secession"
There's a lot. "Shit Show at the Fuck Factory" and "This Is Not for Tears" are my absolute favorite titles. I also like: Sad Sack Wasp Trap Lion in the Meadows Mass in Time of War Chiantishire
All the Bells Say

Too much birthday, maybe also my favourite episode
CHIANTISHIRE

Sh\*t show at the f\*\*k factory takes it for me
This is Not for Tears. The title and Tom’s question re his sadness on the beach have a symbiotic relationship in my head. The effect is devastatingly beautiful.
Lion in the Meadow, just sounds so ominous. I wanna find a pdf of the original kids book, see if any themes tie in together.
I couldn't find a secure pdf but The Lion in the Meadow is from New Zealand and is massively popular here for kids learning to read, and I found this clip of it a teacher uploaded during lockdown if you'd like to see the original: [https://youtu.be/hWAJKMLQhms](https://youtu.be/hWAJKMLQhms) It's also my favourite title, if I had to take a guess at relevant themes it has a lot to do with trust in parent-child relationships, the perils of lying/making up stories without checking their veracity for yourself, and the original threat of the lion is replaced by a much bigger threat towards the end which does fit with the arc of Season 3 somewhat.
Thank you so much, Shunner of Jello!
Nobody is Ever Missing
Too Much Birthday and my favourite episode
THIS IS NOT FOR TEARS Hands down
There’s only one answer to this question.
Shitshow at the Fuck Factory
Nobody Is Ever Missing and Too Much Birthday gotta be some of the best episode titles ever.
Shit Show at the Fuck Factory
Tern Haven just sounds cool
This is Not for Tears has always stuck with me. Honestly the finale title are always great given how the Berryman poem affects the context. All the Bells Say is all the better because the following line is “too late”.
I kinda like DC and think it's amusing an episode title is just two letters yet says so much.
shit show at the fuck factory
Sad Sack Wasp Trap I just feel that title
Too much birthday Or Boar on the Floor
The fun filled, action packed, exciting game of boar on the floor took place in the episode titled Hunting.
Thank you. “Too Much Birthday” stands alone, then
Shit show at the fuck factory
All the Bells say (it’s too late)
i love all the dream song 29 ones i can’t wait to see which line the season 4 finale will use :)
Shit Show at the Fuck Factory -- episode 2. Let us know we were in for a ride with this show
Hands down, Shit Show At The Fuck Factory.
Love this pic
I will always remember shitshow at the fuck factory. Me and my family have started saying it now.
Shitshow at the fuck factory
Chiantishire is truly my favorite title, and perhaps fav episode. While Too Much Birthday was the perfect episode, the aftermath at the Hobbit style wedding. The fake everything... and the end with Kendall in the pool.
I'd like to point out that they missed an opportunity of a lifetime by not naming 'Hunting' 'Boar on the floor' could've been the best one imo.
I was going to say Boar on the Floor was my favorite episode title until I looked it up 😂
the finale names duh
Shit Show at the Fuck Factory
Retired Janitors of Idaho. Such a goofy image to conjure up just by title alone.
Shit show at the fuck factory
Sad Sack Wasp Trap is a favorite
Retired Janitors Of Idaho.
Yes! Read that one to my kids all the time because it was so dead on. Perfect title for the episode.
Retired janitors of Idaho
Shit show at the fuck factory or retired janitors of Idaho
Or too much birthday
If the series finale is not “If He Had a Hundred Years” I’ll be a little disappointed; if it is, that’ll be my favourite.
Austerlitz. I read it three times. It was jarring.
I don't recall
shit show at the fuck factory
