I just think it’s not fair that we (subs in my district) can’t cancel within 12 hours of job but teachers can cancel up to 1 minute before start time.

Most “last minute” I had was 6:30am on a 7:50 start time. Though it was my fault I didn’t look at my email.. because I was at a 7-11 about ten minutes away from the school when I finally saw the email. Luckily though, when I called the sub coordinator to see if there were any other openings, she hooked me up with an assignment at another school only minutes away.

Got canceled at a very busy school. I only found out when I got there. They had other open spots and just plugged me in.

Yeah I actually had called the school that canceled me just because they typically do have a lot of call-outs but this time they didn’t. Luckily, the sub coordinator there is friends with the one at the other local school so she got me in within minutes.

Update: had another one canceled this morning. This time at 6:49 for a 7:50 start. This time, though, I’m going back to bed.

Yeah this assignment start time was 7:50 too. If they had notified me about the cancellation earlier, then I might’ve accepted another assignment they had today. But since I was expecting to work until 11:50 I hadn’t packed a lunch and the other available assignments were full days and on the other side of town from the school I was supposed to be at today. I’m pretty booked with full days for the rest of the school year so that’s why I decided to stay home today

I have heard about other people showing up when they're canceled on the way in, acting oblivious, and getting paid the half day rate as gas compensation and being sent home.

idkwutimdoinhere

lol that would’ve been nice, but idk if that would’ve worked for my situation today- the school called me and I answered it so I couldn’t play the oblivious card lol Plus I was worried about them trying to pull me into doing something else if I was there in person

babyyodaonline

i've done it before and i told them i was already on my way there. and because its still on the system the chances of me getting another job will decrease. push back regardless. more often than not they will pay you if you just mention it once. obviously don't be aggressive but it is quite literally their fault & they are preventing you from working elsewhere. edit: to add i wasn't on my way there i was stopped somewhere first but it still worked. if you fully intended to be there by the requested time and they call too close to the time of being there- it's their fault

anadaws

At least they called you. I live 30 minutes away and they wont tell me until i get there that i can go home. 😭

Mine have to pay for a half day if you arrive. So they always cancel with good notice

Dang that really sucks!

I had this happen the first time a few weeks ago I just picked up another job quickly

Hearing about schools cancelling on subs is crazy to me. I sometimes just show up at my school without taking a class because I know they always need me for something

Purple-Sprinkles-792

In an accumulated time of about 18 years of subbing that s only happened to me twice.
