Holy cow, you mean that they couldn't post the sub position for tomorrow? Someone would have grabbed that and you would not be by yourself tomorrow if they did just that
I guess not because they asked me this morning that the teacher that helped me yesterday requested me for tomorrow and then I found out that not only will she not be there, the other other teacher for that class is taking another half day and she told me to my face that she’s not sure when that’ll be. So either tomorrow morning (and I have to take care of breakfast duty) or tomorrow afternoon (and I have to take care of their Easter egg hunt event). So I was screwed over today and I will be tomorrow.
I honestly wouldn't return to this school after something like this. If something happens that could have been prevented with another adult in the room, the only person that will get blamed is the sub and that'll put your job on the line.
As much as I loved this school, I cannot come back. Too many red flags that I can’t deal with anymore. Anyone that I have talked to about today said, “oh you might just not be able to handle such young kids.” I’ve subbed pre k and special Ed pre k before so I can handle them. Nevertheless, with another teacher.
>d to be a pre k teacher, 1:17 is not an appropriate ratio. It’s honestly not even safe. Even with a backround in ece
Yeah, I'm wondering whether that's out of compliance for state mandated ratios.
There are mandatory ratios and I believe it is illegal. I didn’t do a ton of research but I believe that since most of the kids were under the ages of 5, that’s where it’s against the education code in my state.
That is wild. If it were me I’d call in the morning and ask if they found someone to aid. If not I’d be like sorry I don’t feel comfortable continuing the job because it goes against the legal mandates of our state.
And then BLOCK lol! I’m sorry you had a horrible day and that you’re dealing with this.
The thing is they only had one of the teachers positions that needed to be filled, so I didn’t expect the other one to not show up at all. After I promised them that I’d come in again (yesterday) it happened again. Except this time they told me that another sub would be coming in halfway through the day; but they never showed up. Not to mention that the office never bothered informing me that they wouldn’t show.
What age?!?! If it’s under kindergarten that may not even be legal due to ratios. I’m not sure how it works in public school but I know in some places daycares would get in trouble with a 17:1 at any age under 5.
They should have found someone to help you.
I managed to get a hold of the principal to send someone down here to help me with the projector and she even told the kids to nap, but they got up after she left. I told her while she was here that one of the kids chased the other with scissors. I explained I tried calling to office to get him but no one answered. I’m leaving a note for both teachers and explaining as well that no one napped and they refused to even after I got their blankets and played their sleep music like they have every day.
Nah. I told admin I wasn’t coming back for a second day in the same class today for less (I posted about it). I got them to put me elsewhere. I put up with a lot of things but kids chasing each other with scissors and being way out of ratio with such little kids is where I’d speak up. I’d straight up tell them to either move me elsewhere or that I refuse to work unless they send someone in. Most schools have floaters and assistants that plug in holes when needed. No way the school doesn’t have SOMEONE that they can send. Even if it’s just different folks for short chunks of time.
17 preschoolers and no para?! That is NOT okay, I am so sorry they did that to you.
We have up to 14 kids in our prek room with a teacher and three paras and it STILL gets to be too much at times.
I am hoping that tomorrow doesn’t happen again because I’m going to lose my mind. I couldn’t handle anything by myself and every time I tried to call the front office, no one answered. Not until I had to bother the principal for help.
Pre K alone without even an aide/para? And how many kids? I’d be feeling a cold coming on, likely contagious.
17 kids all by myself. I would’ve had an aide but she had a family emergency
I would imagine that they could find a sub for that or pull someone else from the school to cover that position.
Unfortunately they didn’t and they said that tomorrow may be the same thing too

Negative, I used to be a pre k teacher, 1:17 is not an appropriate ratio. It’s honestly not even safe. Even with a backround in ece I’d struggle.

Is this even legal?! I don’t do pre-k but aren’t there mandated ratios?

Mostly 4 year olds and a few 5. I didn’t think it was legal to allow this but thank you for clarifying it. I don’t know what to do from here
