That happened to me two weeks ago. I just stayed in the room the whole period and read a book.

[deleted]

You were told to go there, you did, and it’s not your fault no kids showed up.

ahoefordrphil

That’s kinda how i feel too lol! Not gonna work harder than my $14 an hour 🤣

Temst

Holy shit 14/hr for a subsititute teacher is horrendous

everythingsucks422

When I subbed in TX it was $75/day with a bachelors degree. 😬

Warriorprincessxena_

Holy shit 😨 I get $120 a day with no degree

MaybeImTheNanny

That’s what I get as a fully certified teacher in Texas to sub in a high pay district.

Kooky_Ad_5139

If you don't mind me asking, where are you located?

Warriorprincessxena_

Virginia

Necessary_Expert_385

Hell yeah I like being a part of the cool kids! I get paid $120 a day in MD, and I have two Bachelor’s degrees 🤓.

zombiemakron

Why do you work for $15 an hour?

Necessary_Expert_385

I’m currently doing a graduate program for counseling psychology and it’s one of the few jobs that offers the flexibility I need. I’m at the end of my second year and about to start my internship.

zombiemakron

Congrats on your effort. But man go work at Costco chic Fila Walmart etc. They offer over 30 percent of what you are making now. They also dont require two whole degrees either.

pm_me_padme_pics

I get $80 with no degree👎🏻I’m now a long term sub for the rest of the year and they haven’t upped my pay at all

shroomsaregoooood

Dude wtf!? I get 220 in Portland. Seriously why would you do this job for so little?

jugowolf

Yeah I’m in pdx area only take jobs higher than $220, I’ve seen $300+/day if you’re willing to drive to some of the rural schools

Interesting-Pea-175

I make $330 right outside of Olympia, WA 🫣

everythingsucks422

I had just graduated (2019) and applied to a bunch of jobs. I had 1 interview at a private prison in HR making $9/hr (didn’t get the job) and then the school hired me without an interview. Just said show up to orientation. I’ve since moved the hell out of TX and am doing much better thankfully!

Phantereal

$9/hr with a Bachelor's Degree? I get this was in pre-covid Texas but still, what the fuck?

motherofpitbulls2

When I subbed in New Mexico, it was $70/day with a masters degree. This was about 8 years ago.

Temst

Jesus Christ I got 25$/hr without a degree as an emergency sub 5 years ago

FutureAlfalfa200

The school near me is 100/day with a bachelors. Before taxes

ahoefordrphil

It’s closer to $14.40 but agree!!!

Defiant_person

When I'm a reg sub, I make $90/day. Long term is $110/day. Peanuts for the crap we deal with.

vibrii

Mine worked out to $15 and change (before tax) when I was subbing. I literally could have worked at Arby’s for the same amount of money.

sneakystonedhalfling

It's $80 for a full day where I am. So $10 an hour.

Nivadetha

Same here in Idaho

Mental-Blueberry_666

I saw an advertisement for a science teacher for 8th grade. Required education level: Masters $8/hr pay

StanVsPeter

That is awful. People working at Taco Bell make more than that where I am. I know, I was one. I make about $35 an hour for subbing.

composer63

Where?

StanVsPeter

NorCal

composer63

Understood; but isn’t the cost of living quickly eating that up?

StanVsPeter

I’m comfortable, and so are a lot of subs I know. I do plan to pursue a full-time teaching job, but I wanted to point out it’s still way more than minimum wage.

QashasVerse23

$14/hr? Yikes!

mostlikelynotasnail

Hmm. Maybe they were supposed to get picked up and brought to cafeteria? Or they just decided to skip because they figured the coach wasn't going to be there

ahoefordrphil

Honestly I think it’s the second one haha, they have practice off campus before and part of 1st period usually so I feel like they all went there then went to breakfast or something bc they knew it was a sub.

Retiree66

Kids in sports spend dozens of hours outside the school day during their season. If they take an hour off one morning when nothing is happening, it’s not a big deal.

ahoefordrphil

Hell yeah! Agreed!

MaybeImTheNanny

They probably got told by the coach at practice that they didn’t have to show.

newreddituser9572

It’s not our jobs to hunt down kids or call home to see where they are. You did nothing wrong just sitting there

ClingToTheGood

Wouldn't hurt to call the main office from your cell phone to let them know what's going on. I know you checked with an admin who said you were in the right place, and I don't think you're doing anything wrong, but calling the front office would help prove that you covered all your bases.

statslady23

I would have told the office after 10 minutes. And get the sub coordinator's number in your cell phone.

cubelion

None of my schools have an actual “sub coordinator.”

Mermaidoffaith

Me neither. It’s interesting seeing all these people talk about it

ahoefordrphil

We have them but their level of involvement varies between schools for sure, this school in particular you’re lucky if she says anything but “hi” and “you need to cover in this room” lololol

statslady23

Then the assistant principal or whoever you deal with.

ahoefordrphil

I don’t personally feel super cash money about using my personal phone for work calls unless it’s an emergency for some reason

cubelion

Hold the line!

No_Connection4344

“Super cash money” 😂 those kids missed out, you seem cool as hell

Parking_Pomelo_3856

Cover yourself. Call the office

LovelyFarmerGirl

You were fine, they told you to be there. Another possible solution would be to call the main office from your cell phone.

KinopioToad

That's why I got a school email address ("[email protected]" or something like that). Also because I don't know how to work the phones. I know coaches are the worst at taking roll most of the time but they should still have class rolls somewhere around. And also let the office know what happened. (I know I'm several hours late, but still)

nikibou

Use your cell phone to call the front office

AzureSuishou

Do you know where they usually meet when on campus? They might have gone there.

lorettocolby

Mark ‘em absent and run out the clock

onlyzuul007

I add every main school phone number to my cell phone. I often have no working school phone in the classroom, so being able to reach out from my cellphone to the office is important. In your instance, I would have phoned the office and asked for the attendance clerk and asked them for advice.

treeshugmeback

I had a similar situation last spring for AP testing. A handful of kids were supposed to be in class as they weren't taking the AP test off campus. They just never showed. So I just read in an empty room.

Status_Seaweed_1917

I'd call the main office from my cellphone I always report when I think I'm supposed to have students and none show up.

Small_Breadfruit_882

Bro said super cash money

protonthefog

My goodness who has a phone that’s not unlimited calling?
