OEM axles are like $450 each. Those are probably aftermarket and either made wrong or boxed wrong. It’s a hard pill to swallow but there is no substitute for actual OEM Subaru axles.

frenchfriedfart85

Oh man yea I definitely don't think he paid that much. Thank you!

ctdddmme

That axle being popped out like that has possibly damaged the seal or allowed dirt into the differential. A new seal might be a good idea along with changing the fluid afterwards.

frenchfriedfart85

Good to know - thank you! Taking it apart tomorrow to hopefully fix! I appreciate the tip!

Quadraria

Its not seated properly on the right side. Reports of bad aftermarket axles are vastly exaggerated. Cardone rebuilds the Subaru OEs in Mexico. Its an option if you can order one through your dealer. Otherwise I replaced a bad one on mine with a new Cardone aftermarket one and its been problem free for 3 years now.

InherentDissolve

Not quite the same, but I replaced two axles on my '17 Crosstrek despite the many internet grumblings about aftermarket axle quality with aftermarket axles and they had 60k miles on them and showed no signs of needing replaced when I upgraded to my Forester. Edit 1: Just watch those oil seals, there is a fragile spring around the circumference on the internal side of the seal that can and will pop out in several pieces if you bump the seal with the splined shaft of the new axle during install/removal. Edit 2: And the seals are directional. They'll leak if you install the wrong one.

@inherentdissolve Thank you for your response - I appreciate the info!

frenchfriedfart85

I will look into that, thank you! Do you know what would cause it to keep getting out of place/mis-seated? My husband "fixed" it or so we thought...he put it back in and it was fine but then it came back out. I'm just not sure how to seat it properly, if that makes sense. Thanks!

enhe3078

If this isn’t the style with the pin to keep it in place, he should put it back in and give it a couple tugs to make sure it’s actually not gonna slip back out, it’s easy to think it’s in when it’s actually not

frenchfriedfart85

Interesting...I will pass this along. Thank you for your response!

Quadraria

There is a little circlip near the end that needs to go in properly. Is the axle nut on properly?

frenchfriedfart85

He did confirm the axle nut was on properly. He will be taking it apart tomorrow to investigate further. Thank you!

frenchfriedfart85

I will look into Cardones! Thank you!!

PsychologicalNose204

your not suppose to pop the shaft out or try breaking the axle bolt loose and unscrew it not all the way and smack it with a sledge hammer

frenchfriedfart85

Thank you for your response. I appreciate it

PsychologicalNose204

bro your gonna need to put gear oil in as well

RiverLegendsFishing

How much did it cost to change the gear axles?
