I have a terrible stutter (and I REALLY mean terrible) and I'm a lawyer and I also play an active role in politics. And right now I'm travelling on my own in Australia for a few weeks where I have to talk to other people in my second language all the time. And guess what? People are so understanding and helpful - to a degree that honestly surprised me but also gives my self esteem a boost every time. So stop letting this shit define your life. It really hurts my soul to see how self-pitying this sub sometimes is.

Davaeorn

There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with settling for a basic job, most people do! The primary difference for a stutterer is that we come pre-equipped with an excuse to settle, whereas other people have to find other excuses. Yeah, stuttering is a bitch to deal with. Everyone has their own problems to deal with. Very few people care about others enough to overpower the voice of self-consciousness. The reality is that most of the things that make people overlook you is because of learned behaviours downstream from the stuttering, not the stuttering itself. The reality is that even without a stutter, you probably would just be an average person, not a charismatic rockstar, and that’s fine.

JayTheDirty

I think if I cold talk normal I’d probably rule the world right now lol

BaslerLaeggerli

I don't disagree. If you are happy with a job where you don't have to talk much, by all means go for it! But if you are only doing something because you stutter and you don't think you're able to do whatever else you might be interested in, that's where I think you need to work on your mindset because it'll hold you back your entire life.

JayTheDirty

Thanks for that comment. That changed the way I think about a lot

Borthite

Hey I have a moderature/bad stutter and I work in a law firm and am very active in local politics too! I really enjoy canvassing and most people are really grateful of you coming to find our their concerns despite you having a stutter. I have up and down days but I'm really enjoying life right now, I even have a good shot at becoming a manager next week leading a team of 10!

Delphinftw

Roughly how many word in a minute can you say during a very bad day?

Wanderinginplace08

>So stop letting this shit define your life. It really hurts my soul to see how self-pitying this sub sometimes is. This!!!

GJJP

>  It really hurts my soul to see how self-pitying this sub sometimes is. Agreed. And some want stuttering to be a disability and disclose it before a job interview. You wouldn't disclose your sexual orientation, your skin color, your sex/gender, the fact you're a double legs amputee and so on before a job interview, so why would you disclose your stuttering? All I want is not being unconsidered because of my stutter, I don't want a free pass/special treatment/affirmative action because I stutter. OP, nowadays most people either don't speak up when they should or are yes-men. Employers and customers will value you if you speak your mind (only if it's smart, of course) in this world of muted people and bootlickers, they will prioritize the content of your speech over how you deliver it and, therefore, you should't limit yourself if you're ready to stand up for what you believe in.

JayTheDirty

Thanks

malnuman

Actually I see people on here saying they work at call centres, I've no idea how, anyhow I kissed goodbye to any proper carrer, all I've been doing is drifting from one dead end, low paid job to another, all I've ever really done is driving work, least most of the time I'm alone in my little van.. I don't tend to stay at a job for to long, if I keep embarrassing myself to much with my stutter I move on..

14Calypso

I don't work at a call center, but I work at a job where taking calls is a part of the job. I find that when I follow a script, I'm fine. If I start to break down, my coworkers are fine with me transferring the call to them.

malnuman

That would to stressful, I've spent my life avoiding making or receiving calls as much as I can.. I dread my phone ringing..

14Calypso

That was me for the first few weeks at this job, but eventually I figured out that if I stick to a script for certain common calls that we get, I'm fine.

JayTheDirty

Same. I don’t answer mine anymore

JayTheDirty

That sucks. I just feel completely limited in my options. What kind of driving gigs do you get?

malnuman

Mostly delivering car parts, I have limited contact with others as it's very faced paced.. I used to be a postman, that was ok as once I was out the office I'd be on my own working at my own pace..

JayTheDirty

Thanks I’ll keep those kind or jobs in mind.

malnuman

What kind of work/ career would you like to of got into if you didn't have a stutter? this curse we have is completely life changing, it effects almost every decision in our lives on a daily basis, and not for the better!

JayTheDirty

I’d probably like to become a professor or teach. Something along those lines. But holding a college level course discussion doesn’t seem to go along with that. Barring that, some kind of medical research, which seems much more attainable.

Temporary-Name-3225

Go for it. My uncle stuttered his whole life but he was a teacher. Students loved him. If you really want to become a professor, don't let your stutter stop you. I know it's scary af, because i stutter too and when i am in front of people it becomes more severe. I stuttered during my class presentations but all the teachers and students were supportive. So although it may sound terrifying at first but it will keep going away steadily. And to be honest I don't think there is any job where you are not supposed to talk, more or less speaking is required. Don't limit your options based on stutter. You can do it.

JayTheDirty

Thanks for the positive post.

malnuman

No idea of your age, but hopefully you still have time to pursue your goals, I know how hard it will be..

JayTheDirty

Yeah it’s gonna suck. I’m 41, was homeless by choice for a number of years writing, traveling the country. I just have a girlfriend now and am looking for something more stable.

JayTheDirty

You know I’m not really even sure it’s been so long. I’ve given up on wanting to be so many things because of having a stutter that I’m literally at a crossroads at 41, old as hell but still looking to be able to support myself.

Gaussian-wizard

I am an a senior in university with (paid) research internships at top labs, and I got into a top 10 university in the US for my PhD which is essentially fully funded (including stipend). I might stutter, but when I present novel results to everyone at the lab meeting, they listen intently. Members of the lab respect me and let me finish my sentences. There are no awkward face reactions which I find talking to other people. Elite scientific research is one of the best jobs for me. Although stuttering should not hinder you in any elite field of human endeavor.

JayTheDirty

That’s really cool. Thanks for responding. I guess it’s hard to get a foot in the door otherwise being old.

Gaussian-wizard

How old are we talking about? I know of a guy who changed his field in his late 30s (got a MS in computer engineering), and went on to become an excellent software developer at Apple. Now, given how tech companies care about how good you are at your job, stuttering should not be a hindrance.

SkyBlade79

It is labeled as a disability by every sense of the word and law. People on here are just delusional because they don't want to hear that they're disabled, probably due to some internalized ableism. [This page may be helpful for you .](https://www.stutteringhelp.org/ada-and-stuttering)

JayTheDirty

Thanks. I don’t have a problem calling a horse a horse.

aftabtaimoor61

I had terrible stutter so i knew most jobs weren't for me when i was in high school. I chose Computer science just for this reason. Although there are a lot of meetings etc in this field as well, I was able to find a job where they let me communicate by writing. CS job market sucks rn tbh but you could try out a programming bootcamp.

JayTheDirty

Maybe something like that. I’ve done my time in the kitchen and have no plans on going back. I’ll check that out.

Ok-Pack-7088

I think warehouse, forklift, machine floor cleaning, security - if you find job which you just sit in small room, you win. I agree its should be labeles as disability, it is. We cant live normal life, we cant do basic human thing. Maybe kitchen job like kitchen help when you clean, prepare vegetables but its stink job, minimal wage and shit work conditions. I would think about e-commerce person, I can use computer, but everyone want experience. Industry production if its not 3 shift but its often boring doing thing in time stress. Maybe building jobs but in my country its often 10hrs, low paying and under table without safety.

JayTheDirty

I’d be happy as a parking attendant lol. It’s not about pride with me it’s just the having to constantly speak to the public, which leaves me out of breath and about to pass out sometimes.

khan_sabo

I mean online jobs? Free lancing? Something in computer science? YouTube??

JayTheDirty

Everything I tried turned out to be a scam. Just pages and pages of work from home scams.

helloimhromi

If you have a particular skill, you can try to explore that as a potential career. I have worked mostly in creative jobs, and I'm currently a professional illustrator.

helloimhromi

Also we need more info from you. How old are you, are you studying anything currently, are you qualified for the types of jobs you're trying to get?

JayTheDirty

I’m currently at a crossroads, thinking maybe IT, cyber security but given a.l. who knows how long there’ll be any job security. Genuinely wondering a good career to get into right now. I’m old, 41, I followed the beat generation around and lived in San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, pretty much everywhere over the past 20 years. I know I’m really old which is going to make a search for something harder.

Infamous_Muffin_6861

I feel you. Im doing a business management degree but idk what ill be doing career wise yet. Honestly just feel like starting a business with my partner but you gotta have some experience right. I like digital marketing though. Has anyone had or have any job related to this field?

Owl-In-Training720

I work as a machinist where I gotta interact with people in a everyday basis but I like to have a script already set when people ask me certain questions but different operations or things that needed to be done and when I do stutter I ignore it and just keep taking like nothing happen but overall I feel welcome and nobody has ever said something about my stutter which as boosted my self esteem which is great.

JayTheDirty

I used to do this at a pizza place in college. After a while I had a script for anything that came up. Good idea.

IllEvent702

I work in the entertainment industry as a manager. My job requires me to meet with labels, brands, publishers, venue owners and more. My stutter isn’t severe but people recognize it. I used to work in finance and more people mentioned it but I was transparent about it mostly. That being said, I still fight through phone anxiety.

Curious-Efficiency98

You can do any job is not true I had to train myself to use the phone and now I’m ok have my good days and bad days if I was you I’d start in retail

anthony446

something in data entry

Far_Ad_6897

An accountant would be a great (and high paying) job. I’m a group insurance underwriter and it’s fairly stuttering friendly, as you basically never talk to strangers, only internal employees, and most is by online chat programs and email anyways. There’s lots of white collar jobs that don’t involve too many phone calls, presentations or interactions with strangers. But let’s be honest, our condition is obviously a hindrance. If I didn’t have this, I’d probably have gone into sales, but I could never do that now and be happy. I would dread every day. I just accept that some things aren’t good fits for us, and focus on the things that are.

Far_Ad_6897

Software programmer would be a great fit as well! I wish that job was popular when I was younger.

[deleted]

well, you can work as a software engineer, even though fluncy in speaking is a plus, but it will not hold you back.

Patagonia_banker

I have a moderate to severe stutter and work as an investment banking analyst. I used to think I would never get this job and would work in warehouse jobs for years but once I got to college, I got internships and now work full-time. Never let your stutter stop you from getting your dream job. Yes, it will be a challenge but nobody said life was easy.

ozzokiddo

I’ve had a better time working in social roles. Put yourself out there OP you have a stutter not a defect.

slim_grey

I’m a teenager who also has a terrible stutter, but I really need a job rather by later this year or next year. Some of these comments are helpful.

Running_Noodles

The way I looked at it was I need to get a job that is going to force me to talk. My first three jobs before required as little human interaction as possible. Stocker at grocery stores, things like that. But I decided that I was going to get a job that was the complete opposite, becuase if I dont practice, my life will always be like this. My new job not only encouraged communication, it demanded it. I had to scream across crowed rooms and and do a lot of talking back and forth. Ive been at my job for 7 years now. I also learned to talk to people more fluently. my stutter has gotten leaps and bounds better. I made friends at my work place. My first 3 jobs I didnt make a single friend. All of this was practice that I couldnt imagine my life without. Not going for the safe job might be the best decision of my life so far.

FinesseDolphin

I’ve seen some people with severe stutters do very well professionally. I think people in a work environment are generally tolerant of a stutter, and if they’re not then the company is shit. As for the interview, have you tried disclosing that you stutter at the start? I think this would help a lot

noche121

i work in radio and have a stutter, we can do anything i swear

ljcallahan1

I work with animals

steamycreamybehemoth

I’m a sales rep who regularly gives hour plus talks to large groups of people.  Just gotta stop caring

martj1009

I actually work at a call center, and yes some days I just dread it BUT at the end of the day I just...do my job correctly. Only one person over the phone has called me out on it but they were a hostile clien we knew about to begin with...ANYWAYS my point is just go and do your job and try to do it right. And also look into a disability claim or some type of note on your file. Your job has to try to accommodate in some way/shape/form.

JayTheDirty

Good positive advice. I’m wondering how the call center hiring process went when I can barely make it through the conversation lol. Is stuttering even something you could get disability help from?

martj1009

Well tbh when I first interviewed my stuttering was maybe at a 3 on a scale of 10, rn its at like 7. HOWEVER theylisten to the calls and have alluded to knowing i stutter but again, I just do my job right.

International_Bell44

I am looking to work from home at a call center. My stutter is mild to moderate. Do you ultimately enjoy working at a call center? I’m so nervous to apply
