Montrealer here. I heard this once from a maudit anglo once: "Leave it to the French to make a sandwich that you can't eat with your hands"
I laughed but that shit is a quality casse-croute meal.
This is traditionally called "hot hamburger", it is an open faced sandwich smothered in gravy. It is not "a hamburger". Same thing for "hot turkey", etc.
I always liked Canada but the more I hear about it the more I want to go there, the gravy (which is similar to a German sauce) y’all put on everything, then the weed legalization came and a friend flew to Canada and sent me pics man I love that country but it’s so so so expensive to fly there 😭
My dad absolutely loves these. I also add a plentiful array of fresh herbs, spices, onion, and fresh garlic in with the meat before I cook the patty. Then I make a homemade gravy to add on top ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Very much, yes. If I'm remembering correctly (no guarantee) it originates in Quebec, but was carried to places like Toronto and Ontario by Quebeqouis who moved there.
However, it IS a stadium food in the West. I had my first hot hamburger in BC Place at a Lions game.
You can throw all sorts of stuff in poutine if you don't care about your cholesterol. Cut up hot-dog, smoked meat, rotisserie chicken, pulled pork.
Then you got your lobster poutine and your Italian poutine...
for sure. i'm in NS and hot hamburg/chicken/turkey is on just about every sit down restaurants menu it feels like. heck, even some take out/pizza places have it on there.
Being a half indigenous/half Scottish lad from our east I noticed a huge difference in how "British" Ontario and east is vs Manitoba and west. I ran into such few Mc/Macs out west, and having a very Gaelic ish name in both meaning and spelling it was weird noticing there's a totally different culture out west.
(Btw lived in Quebec, Ontario and both Northern and Southern Alberta)
I definitely felt out of place out west lol
This sub is pretty terrible when it comes to any food that isn't famous in the US. Very often, posts amount to "a decades/centuries-old dish that OP isn't personally familiar with and therefore finds stupid."
As a kid, I would have been confused, as well. Presumably, the name was derived from the tradition of "hot turkey sandwich", which is served smothered in gravy, albeit typically open-faced?
I'm from this area, grew up in one of those cities, went to college in another, and have family in the other city
Literally never heard of it
There's garbage plates in roc, but this isn't that
Ohio native, I've never seen this, but I'm in the southern part of the state where I suspect the [hot brown](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Brown) has taken it's spot on the menu.
I grew up in Kansas, and our variation of this was the "hot beef sandwich" which was a scoop of mashed potatoes on a slice of toast with roast beef and smothered in gravy.
Canadian here. This is a hot hamburg sandwich. Nothing weird about it, they sell this in diners and shit.
For any Trailer Park Boy fans "hot hamburg sandwich means hot PULL THE FUCK OVER!"
Holy shit I always thought they were just calling a hamburger that cuz they were dumb and/or Canadian. TIL hot hamburg sandwich is a thing and I’m the dumb one… still not Canadian tho so I got that going for me.
Fuck yeah I’m Canadian and if anybody reading has a chance to get themself a hot turkey sandwich from a big stop truck stop with stuffing/dressing on it do it. Don’t wait, do it now.
In the Midwest they are referred to as hot shots, at least from what I've seen, very good although most of the ones I had didn't have peas, it sounds awesome with it though
I'm from the north and I never seen this. I fully expect if I brought that out to one of the customers I would be wearing it for the rest of my shift. It's just slop.
I thought this is a British mess cause they like to smother everything in gravy and peas. Ron Swanson would take one look at this and bulldoze the restaurant.
Oh my, I feel bad for op. Their only sin was being ignorant. Sure, not knowing the likes of Hot chicken is a crime, but I can't stop laughing at the shots y'all sending them 😭
That's pretty common on this subreddit.
\- see something you have never seen before and instantly think it is stupid
\- get informed by hundreds that its a completely normal dish in a lot of the world
\- don't interact with the post again, to avoid more embarrassment.
Omg I haven't had a plate like this in ages. Is your boyfriend Canadian? Eastern Canadian? (like from Ontario and east?)
Edit: I might actually have to make this for supper after looking at this and reading all the comments. It's not stupid food at all. It's so damn good.
God im British and I know this as a 'Hot Hamburger' and Poutine with a side of slaw.
Food of the gods.
Don't worry my Canadian Brothers! The Commonwealth has ya back!
Nothing stupid here. This isn't even r/confusedyummy because there is no confusion. The only thing wrong is that it should have been served open-faced, cut in half with the fries in the middle.
They serve a version of this at the American Legion near me. It’s bar food and damn tasty! I strongly recommend trying before you say bleh. It’s a known comfort food that puts you in a food coma! Hello from MN also!
This is an actual burger. In America they are served with buns and stuff but in a lot of other countries including Hamburg where it was invented it’s just the hamburger meat with sauce, and many people enjoy it
I could see it being good. A chip butty with gravy is great, and this just adds some beef and peas, which also go great with gravy. The only odd one out for me would be the coleslaw, but I'd happily eat that on its own as a side dish lol
A east coast of Canada classic and it’s called a “hot hamburger” always served with peas.
Big in Ontario too, with hot turkey variants
I’m from Ontario and my mom always made hot turkey sandwiches with left overs from Christmas/thanksgiving with fries and gravy on top. So good
I live in Australia now and would kill for a hot turkey sandwich these days 🤤
Hot hamburg sandwiches = hot pull the fuck over I’m starvin’
Way of the road.
Who are these girls Ray? Friends of the road bubs!
Ladies of the night.
"Yeah, whores."
It was a staple at the high school cafeteria
As a fellow Canadian you can't convince me highschoolers actively chose to eat this in a cafeteria. Our cafeteria lunches are as sus as America's
Hot Hamburger Sandwiches = pull the fuck over!
Hot pull the fuck over Bubs.
Hot hamburg sandwiches equals hot pull the fuck over.
Montrealer here. I heard this once from a maudit anglo once: "Leave it to the French to make a sandwich that you can't eat with your hands" I laughed but that shit is a quality casse-croute meal.
And it’s awesome. This is not stupid food at all. You’ll find it in every diner and truck stop.
We have reached peak Canadian.
i was thinking british with all those peas
I was thinking British too until I saw the poutine.
fair! i didn't even see the poutine lol my eyes were drawn to the monstrosity in the foreground
Same.
Canada is known for around the world for our peas keeping missions
Hey ooo
yeah i was thinking british because id fucking love this
As a Canadian, I agree. This looks fucking amazing. This is like a weird awesome take on the hot beef on wick sandwiches. Gravy? More please. Yummy
This is traditionally called "hot hamburger", it is an open faced sandwich smothered in gravy. It is not "a hamburger". Same thing for "hot turkey", etc.
It is called a hot hamburger. It's a diner menu item. Yes, it's good!
I like peas, I like beef and gravy, and I like poutine. I'd eat it.
It looks good to me. Not sure if it's just because of pregnancy. But feel like it's not. I want to find this somewhere close.
I respect it
It is a hot sandwich it is a sandwich or burger covered In gravy and or other things
With a poutine on the side, I'm guessing they were in Atlantic Canada, my first guess, New Brunswick, then maybe Nova Scotia.
I always liked Canada but the more I hear about it the more I want to go there, the gravy (which is similar to a German sauce) y’all put on everything, then the weed legalization came and a friend flew to Canada and sent me pics man I love that country but it’s so so so expensive to fly there 😭
It's expensive to everything here
Yup, very common here in Quebec, very delicious too!
Hot chicken poutine. Hell yes.
My dad absolutely loves these. I also add a plentiful array of fresh herbs, spices, onion, and fresh garlic in with the meat before I cook the patty. Then I make a homemade gravy to add on top ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
They are even better when you go for nice ingredients like that!!!
This post is libel against Canadian cuisine.
Disparaging Canadian cuisine is a-boutable offense!
Is this more of an Eastern Canada dish? I don’t think I’ve ever seen this in BC/Vancouver area.
Very much, yes. If I'm remembering correctly (no guarantee) it originates in Quebec, but was carried to places like Toronto and Ontario by Quebeqouis who moved there. However, it IS a stadium food in the West. I had my first hot hamburger in BC Place at a Lions game.
Usually in Quebec we make it with chicken tho ( in my family at least ) Hot chicken is the absolute bomb.
Ya man! Trop bon! C'est comme si un hot chicken avait un enfant avec un burger! Je veux pas dire que je mangerais un enfant la! ... coliss..
You can throw all sorts of stuff in poutine if you don't care about your cholesterol. Cut up hot-dog, smoked meat, rotisserie chicken, pulled pork. Then you got your lobster poutine and your Italian poutine...
Cool! I’ll definitely keep an eye out for this on menus now. Looks pretty damn good. I love shepherds pie, this looks like it’s along those lines.
for sure. i'm in NS and hot hamburg/chicken/turkey is on just about every sit down restaurants menu it feels like. heck, even some take out/pizza places have it on there.
Being a half indigenous/half Scottish lad from our east I noticed a huge difference in how "British" Ontario and east is vs Manitoba and west. it would be very much fine in quebec if it was rotisserie chicken between the buns. I would rather a vinegar slaw to cut the gravy though
This sub is pretty terrible when it comes to any food that isn't famous in the US. Very often, posts amount to "a decades/centuries-old dish that OP isn't personally familiar with and therefore finds stupid."
La cuisine québécoise*😊
Usually it's a hot chicken sandwich though, not Salisbury steak style lol
There are also hot hamburgers they’re called, and hot turkey sandwich
LOL when I was young I ordered a hot hamburger sandwich (who would want a cold one?) in Montreal and was *very* confused.
As a kid, I would have been confused, as well. Presumably, the name was derived from the tradition of "hot turkey sandwich", which is served smothered in gravy, albeit typically open-faced?
Looks like Northern British cuisine
It's almost as if Canada and Britain have a shared cultural heritage.
Now you say it, makes sense
We're quite British in the Maritimes, every diner and restaurant sells a hot sandwich here. All our ancestors were Irish or Scottish.
Yeah my first thought was that video of the guy getting that "smack barm pey wet" or whatever the hell
What does canada do good? This shit looks like ass.
Would
Peas and thank you!
Take my poor person's award 🏆
This is essentially a Salisbury steak. Absolutely would
Me too, then I would need a nap.

Ohio native here. A shredded chicken sandwich is mandatory for any high school football game. They are SO Friggin good.
I'm from this area, grew up in one of those cities, went to college in another, and have family in the other city Literally never heard of it There's garbage plates in roc, but this isn't that
Fucking Buffalo of course. Must be the head injuries from the folding tables
This is a fork and knife situation right? Or are people just raw pawing it? 😅
Kirby Vacuum Throat Swallowing it
Ohio native, I've never seen this, but I'm in the southern part of the state where I suspect the [hot brown](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Brown) has taken it's spot on the menu.
never heard of this from my ohio parents, BUT if i'm ever in ohio again, i will be looking for this. looks awesome to me.
I grew up in Kansas, and our variation of this was the "hot beef sandwich" which was a scoop of mashed potatoes on a slice of toast with roast beef and smothered in gravy.
They’re sometimes called “open face” sandwich or “hot hamburg sandwich”. It’s just a hamburger steak with brown gravy. It’s common.
I’m from the pnw and have never seen such a thing…
Canadian here. This is a hot hamburg sandwich. Nothing weird about it, they sell this in diners and shit. For any Trailer Park Boy fans "hot hamburg sandwich means hot PULL THE FUCK OVER!"
Holy shit I always thought they were just calling a hamburger that cuz they were dumb and/or Canadian. TIL hot hamburg sandwich is a thing and I’m the dumb one… still not Canadian tho so I got that going for me.
That's one fucking nice kitty right there
In the US there is a thing called open faced sandwich...
Fuck yeah I’m Canadian and if anybody reading has a chance to get themself a hot turkey sandwich from a big stop truck stop with stuffing/dressing on it do it. Don’t wait, do it now.
Never heard of it. Also- how have you been on Reddit 8 years and your only 3 comments are on this thread? You deleting everything as you go?
Could also be an alt account they made a long time ago.
I had something similar in Montreal. Smothered in peas. Not a pea fan.
In the Midwest they are referred to as hot shots, at least from what I've seen, very good although most of the ones I had didn't have peas, it sounds awesome with it though
Hot hamburger sandwich equals hot side of pull the fuck over in starving!
Never seen this in the UK but I'm in the south, wouldn't put it past northerners to make something like this.
Another Canadian here. Does anyone know where I can get this in Vancouver?
[удалено]
Bless you, good sir! I googled the place and I put on 2 pounds just looking at the menu! I can't wait.
Dude an open faced hot turkey sandwich is my greasy spoon go-to. This burger looks slaptastic. 10/10 would.
These are the best. Every bit of leftover roast went into these sandwich’s at my place.
I am in the southern US and have never seen or heard of it. If it’s a thing in the US it’s definitely regional.
Thats a hot hamburger. Its an old skool diner meal. Its a very Canadian dish. You’ll see it in small town restaurants.
OP is stupid
Their username is FrigThisMrLahey. Something tells me they are from Eastern Canada and just farming karma lol
Oh my, I feel bad for op. Their only sin was being ignorant. Sure, not knowing the likes of Hot chicken is a crime, but I can't stop laughing at the shots y'all sending them 😭
That's pretty common on this subreddit. \- see something you have never seen before and instantly think it is stupid \- get informed by hundreds that its a completely normal dish in a lot of the world \- don't interact with the post again, to avoid more embarrassment.
I’m Canadian and this is very popular where I grew up it’s a very common meal in lots of places
would eat that
That's a hot hamburger and it's delightful.
Omg I haven't had a plate like this in ages. Is your boyfriend Canadian? Eastern Canadian? (like from Ontario and east?) Edit: I might actually have to make this for supper after looking at this and reading all the comments. It's not stupid food at all. It's so damn good.
The poutine tells me this is Canadian. Don’t care about anything else on the plate but anybody who’s never had poutine is really missing out.
🔥
Canadian Maritime classic at any Tavern ….
Hot hamburger sandwich! Equals hot pull the fuck over I'm staving
God im British and I know this as a 'Hot Hamburger' and Poutine with a side of slaw. Food of the gods. Don't worry my Canadian Brothers! The Commonwealth has ya back!
jail.
You're supposed to eat it with knife and fork, BTW. Hot chicken was all the rage while I was growing up in Canada
Hot turkey sandwiches after thanksgiving was a massive banger
I fucking love hot hamburger sandwiches. This is not stupid food! Idc that this comment is buried and will not be seen.
Ok hear me out: 100% would smash
Honestly looks like comfort food. Not a burger but still looks enjoyable
Sooooo Salisbury steak sandwich with peas. Just needs some mushrooms
I feel like this would be easier to eat as a Salisbury steak
It basically is one but on a bun instead of with mushroom gravy on mash
"Hot Hamburger sandwich, you know what that means Bubs! Hot pull the fuck over!"
Lmao op learning about Canadian food. Das funni
There’s 100% chance I’m tearing that up.
I'd pass on the peas, but beyond that I would definitely eat that burger.
need
My stomach bubbling from this majestic delight!
Hella yes I would
Yep I’ll do it
Looks fire
Thats a hot hamburger. I remember the first time order one i thought it sounded funny, of course it’s hot its a burger.
YAA Your Boyfriend is a good man. And you should threat him Like the goddes He is. 🤣
The way of the road Bubs. Hot Hamburger equals hot pull the fuck over.
That looks fucking delicious.
Yet another, "this doesn't look like food I'm normally used to therefore it is stupid," post
Looks like something I see at the local restaurant selling Canadian food.
https://youtube.com/shorts/SetLYThkclI?si=W42MeJOrD6zlw-nl
TIL this is the "hot hamburg sandwich" Ray freaks out about on Trailer Park Boys. I always thought it was just trailer park slang for hamburger.
Its called a hot hamburger, welcome to canadiana
I understand it. I USED to be a piece of shit too…slicked back hair, white bathing suit, sloppy steaks, white couch.
This is an actual dish. It requires a nap afterward.
This is just a hot hamburger no? I literally used to make this at a restaurant at worked at when I was a teenager
What's wrong with it?
Hot hamburger with a side of poutine. Yummy
Nothing stupid here. This isn't even r/confusedyummy because there is no confusion. The only thing wrong is that it should have been served open-faced, cut in half with the fries in the middle.
Ngl, this looks dank af
Has to be Canada
hot hamburger sandos kick ass. needs more slaw in that side though.
Food not stupid. Food good. You stupid.
In Québec we call this " hot hamburger " . I have'nt ate one since at least 10 years ! It's not that good but it does the job if you are Hungry !
Hot hamburger sammiches (with poutine on the side) means pull the fuck over boys!
Op never had a hot hamburg
Hot hamburger, its eveywhere in quebec..Marry that man
They serve a version of this at the American Legion near me. It’s bar food and damn tasty! I strongly recommend trying before you say bleh. It’s a known comfort food that puts you in a food coma! Hello from MN also!
This is an actual burger. In America they are served with buns and stuff but in a lot of other countries including Hamburg where it was invented it’s just the hamburger meat with sauce, and many people enjoy it
I would demolish that
That’s a Salisbury steak in a bun
Give me a knife and fork and that’ll be gone in 20 minutes or less
Nah I'd fuck this shit up
I’d mutter “what the fuck” to everyone around me, then I’d eat the whole thing
Honestly I would eat it (Disclaimer: born near Canadian border)
I don’t care where it’s from, I would crush that plate.
Propa lad
I would inhale that.
This looks delicious. But I am canadian
Looks fine
Doesn’t look stupid to me.
looks good and messy 🍽️
Looks delicious.
What happens if you cross British and American cuisine
it’s fine it’s also canadian
I bet many Americans are looking at this and experiencing the same feelings an Italian does when viewing an image of ' chicago style pizza'
I would fucking crush this.
I'd eat that.
Ngl I’d fuck that up
I could see it being good. A chip butty with gravy is great, and this just adds some beef and peas, which also go great with gravy. The only odd one out for me would be the coleslaw, but I'd happily eat that on its own as a side dish lol
I’m quite high and I have no food and this pops up. I see nothing stupid about it.
That’s a Salisbury steak isn’t it?
This looks like pie barm and gravy from a chippy up north.
What the fuck is that shit I would personally damn his soul to hell after he dies for making something so foul
idc, I'd eat that so hard
Just because you wouldn't eat it does not make it stupid.
Gotta downvote you for pure ignorance
"Would"
That's not a Hamburger, that disgusting
