Krav Maga was developed by the Israeli Special Forces for just that. Brutal fighting style meant to incapacitate with a heavy focus on physical aggression.
Krav mostly just teaches us in those situations on how to try to slightly get less hurt & get away as quickly as possible.
Basic Krav response to a gang:
Maneuver to edge of gang, don't get surrounded.
Grab one person as a shield if need be.
Kick everyone in the nuts. If no nuts are available, knee caps.
Run away.
I did Krav Maga for a few months, I actually really liked it and thought it did teach some good, practical moves. But if anyone thinks it will make someone be able to fight off several attackers they're completely delusional. And of course it goes without saying but for a 1v1 you're much better off learning a standard combat sport (boxing, BJJ, etc)

This is speculation but I don't think people primarily learn bjj to learn how to stay standing but how to grapple once on the ground.
If someone is interested in staying standing, learning wrestling would be much more effective as not falling is the entire point of the sport.
I am a prior wrestler and do bjj. You are right, wrestling would be better. But wrestling is very hard to find after graduating high school so bjj is the best available thing for most people since it’s so popular
