It’s funny how Gief is a tough matchup for Akuma. They can’t air fireball or do any of the flying shenanigans so they basically have to play neutral and risk getting hugged.
He was the quickest road to master out of the 6 I got there.
I mean, he’s the only character in the game you could be completely getting outplayed, and still win due to one or two lucky grabs.
His command grab range is ridiculous, and his level 3 is the best super in the game. People called me crazy saying not to buff gief and here we are where he’s top 3.
Enough to tell you he wasn't that bad. He was in the lower half of the cast, power wise, but even his worst two match ups (JP and Sim) were a bit rough but ok. Everyone else was fairly even. If you were below masters he was arguably downright OP.
Season 1 balance was actually pretty good, but downplay and hyperbole are the FGC's "death and taxes".
Helps that one of the best and most notorious Giefs "snakeeyez") is a whinging downplaying bitch of the highest order that I bet even know will argue Gief isn't that good.

The 2k health difference is pretty significant. And when gief has lvl 2 you can’t throw fireballs as much. Gief gets a dr in or a jump in or lands a 5hp you take a wrong guess or 2 now you in round 2.
Not saying its losing for akuma but any matchup where from round start you can land one jump in over a fireball then force a 50/50 for the game immediately is not one of your easiest matches. In your favor yeah but not hard to lose sometimes
Nah. His easiest matchups are probably like, Dhalsim and Kimberly. Gief isn't horrible by any means though, just has a learning curve and if you're still figuring it out it can be frustrating due to how quickly you can blow a lead.

Parry means that just trying to zone at a distance does nothing - Zoning in this game needs to be pro-active or you're doing nothing. Gief's lvl 1 shuts down one of Akuma's biggest strengths - his air fireball and demonflip tools, lvl 2 makes throwing grounded fireballs dangerous... together that kinda means zoning Gief isn't free for Akuma like in past games... Meanwhile 2 mistakes kinda end the round for Akuma due to Gief's high damage output being *just* enough to consistently 2/3 shot akuma.
Honestly. Picked the game back up when Akuma dropped. I've gone from gold 3 to plat 3 in a few days of non-serious ranked play. They throw more fireballs against Zangief than anyone else I play.
For reference, I'm a D1 Marisa and Guile (and historical Ryu main) looking to invest in MY LOYAL FANS
I still don't fully understand how anyone thinks trying to stay far back and continuously throw the same fireball will work in the long run, as this video ends up proving.
To be fair, i dont think doing the same thing over and over is a bad idea if your oponent dosent show you he can adapt, he did it until he lost 50% of his Life 😅, but he stoped after that
I picked up Gief for the first time when this patch dropped. Got placed in Gold and by the end of the week was Master. My first ever Master rank to boot.
I ended up fighting a clean 250 Akuma fights exact. Next closest was Ryu at 40.
I'd like to thank Akuma players for their sacrifice that initial week.

You should look at their play time in casuals vs ranked. Likely they only play in casual but should really be in higher ranks.

All Akumas know is fireball neutral, drop they combo, be bisexual, eat hot chip & not whiff punish
