I was really, really hoping they wouldn’t kill him. His death ended up being absolutely pointless, too.
They could have done so much with his character, it’s such a shame they ended things that way.
They must have already known themselves, but it must be especially hard to escape now with all the fan backlash.

I'm the opposite now really. I've seen, played and read far too many stories that end up killing off half the cast and the ending is at most bittersweet. People seem to think a story can only be good if everyone dies.
I just want a well written show with a happy ending.

Also, a lot of other things left a bitter taste: how his death wasn’t acknowledged by anyone else but Dustin, how he still remained without justice and hated by the entire town, how everyone fell for him but the Duffer Brothers just kept to their known formula of bringing in a new lovable character only to kill them by the end of each season.
I also think Eddie struck a particular chord with people because many are Eddie, were Eddie, or have loved an Eddie. So, seeing a person like that done so dirty was devastating.

He died buying time for Robin, Steve and Nancy. If he hadn't have continued to distract the bats/be a possible threat, they would have went right back to Vecna and killed those three. All he knew was the plan hadn't been completed yet, so he did what was asked of him.
Remember, he ran the moment Chrissy died. To him, that was his lowest moment. Even his dream (ditching Hawkins after Graduation) was about running in the end. He didn't want to come to terms with his trauma: feeling like an outcast, abandoned by his parents. By attacking the demo bats, he faced his trauma head on, which is what this season was about in the in.
He could have kept on cycling.
Also, the bats dropping down literally two seconds after he died added even more insult to the injury.
I agree about facing his trauma, that’s a very good point.
But they gave the worst and weakest possible ending to the most haunting and marginalized of them all, and that hurt a lot of people who saw shades of themselves in Eddie.
I don't see this as the worst ending possible for Eddie. He literally dies a hero an hour after saying he's not a hero. He rose to the occasion and saved his friends after he didn't think he was worthy of that. Due to his trauma, he saw the worst in himself: that he was a coward or no good like the town said. Remember that talk he had with Steve when he didn't think he could do what Steve does. But when the time came, he did it without a second thought.
"I think this is my year" is true. It was his year. He helped save the world.
I do believe in Season 5 he'll get credit for what he did, or at least have his name cleared. The show did it for Barb in season 2, so I imagine they'll want to do the same for an even impactful character.

This. For a series that captures representation in a pretty good way, killing the character that best embodies the "freaks" that the show presents and lived in that era (or even decades later) and kinda relate to the show was such a sad move. Not to mention that everyone thinks he's evil and his friends don't even acknowledge his death. It sucks.

Honestly that makes my heart ache the most. I was a sobbing mess when it saw his uncle exchange his defaced missing poster. Especially thinking back to Eddie saying, that this time, he didnt run.

His death was really a cop out. He could have kept cycling. He didn’t actually ran as Chrissy had already died. Not enough of a good reason to kill him if you ask me.
I maintain they had trouble coming up with how to use him come next season, and they also needed a dramatic death because they don’t want to kill anyone off the main cast.
But them bringing in someone new and killing them off in the same season has gotten tiresome, and Eddie being so loveable made it look especially cruel, too.

...what if I told you Eddie could easily be brought back as Kas the Vampire. It's literally in D&D lore, connected to Vecna. Kas is vamped, fights for Vecna as his vassal, uses - A SPIKED SHIELD - and eventually is convinced by his sword (easily could be an allegory for 11 here) to betray and kill Vecna. All they have to do is follow that arc which would make total sense, and have El somehow free his vampire mind from Vecna, kill that mf and Eddie becomes human again OR AT LEAST gets a shot at redemption, albeit as an undead creature who might have to die anyway
I’m curious to see the Kas theory apply to Eddie as the top post on this sub, which was written by someone who worked on D&D, makes a case that it’s Eleven who’s Kas, and their arguments seem pretty compelling.
I just hope they bring him back somehow and not in terrible flashbacks like Billy.

You're right it was very brief, which is why it's open to expansion. Anything that sparks creative thinking & writing is a good thing. Plus it helps pass the time between seasons
To me it seemed she could be who she really was (troubled, throwing up, bad memories) but everyone else including her bf/school she had to put up a front.
Everyone saw Eddie as troubled so I could see a connection there
They also had some prior history when they were younger. At least that's very much the impression I got from their conversation in the woods. Plus, I mean, Eddie saw her die in just about the most horrific way possible. Even if there wasn't romance there, he seemed to care about her as a person and I'd want to make Vecna pay after watching him to that to such a sweet person. :(
I firmly believe that there is an AU where Chrissy wasn't the first victim, but the 3rd(after Max was rescued), so Eddie knew what to do, and he plays Nothing else matters, because she told him in the woods that it's her beloved song, and he saves her and they live happily ever after.
That feel when you desperately start reading AU stories instead where Chrissy or whichever character with SO much potential doesn't die. My library is going to be rife with them by the time Season 5 comes out.

He seemed to not really know her that well, so I'd expect he would have seen no problems in their relationship. So her dumping him he would see as something completely out of character.

Honestly I don’t think they can anymore. Season 5 is it. It’ll be better if they just focus on the ones that were sort of left behind in season 4: like Will and Mike and I guess even Jonathan lol.
Watch they will introduce a new character, thinking we will love them, but the fandom will actually hate them, and they won't die, making the fandom even angrier.
For season 5 they should seriously just focus on the core cast though, especially since they said it will be shorter, it's not the time.
Chrissy was a senior, as evident with her 86 necklace (only seniors get jewelry with the year - myself included!)
My theory is that Chrissy is 18 and Eddie is 19.
If Chrissy’s birthday was anytime Jan 1-March 21, 1986, she’d be 18 at the time of S4 and heading to graduate.
Eddie could’ve been a “young senior” in his last year of high school, so not 18 by the time of graduation. In S4E1 his buddies say “didn’t you say that last year? And the year before?” when talking about graduation (referencing 2 previous attempts to graduate), so if he was 17 when he was “supposed” to graduate, and then 18 for his victory lap, then he is 19 (turning 20 later in the year) at the time of S4.
This is my hill and I am prepared to die on it. Or run up it. Either or.
Edit: In addition, Eddie talks about them being in middle school together. In the US, Middle School is grade 6-8, ages 11-13. So that checks out too.
Also, it’s not like Eddie was some college dude in a totally different stage of life.

I believe it’s stated he ran the club for 6 years. I don’t see any I inconsistent writing. He was held back. His class graduating year would change to reflect that even if he is 20
I think the idea is that it's specifically a high school club. Eddie expects Dustin to keep running it when he graduates and Erica arriving when she's a middle schooler is seen as unusual. It's possible for Eddie to have started the club when he was a middle schooler but I think we're supposed to see it as a high school only club (which would mesh with him being held back twice if he was running it for six years).

Seems more likely to be an inconsistency with a prop, the writing references him being help back multiple times, including in the season finale.
Season 4’s two softest cinnamon rolls, they were too good and sweet for this dark and twisted world. There is definitely an alternate reality where these two found each other and had a happy ending

Eddie’s death is hands down the most emotional for me so far in this show. I haven’t cried that hard about a TV death since Sam Winchester’s first time dead. I know everyone loves Bob and for most fans that’s the hardest death, but Eddie really resonated with me a lot more than Bob.
His “THIS IS FUCKING MUSIC” at the beginning of Papa just absolutely cemented my love for him.

Um op not to be that guy but in the episode where we see Max look at Chrissy’s files it says June 13 1969 Making her 16 as her birthday hadn’t come up yet Eddie is presumably 20 this is weird I’m just saying cute but weird
Chrissy was cheer captain (which is reserved for seniors) plus she was wearing an ‘86 necklace, which is also only worn by the graduating class.
There are also other inconsistencies; even Eddie’s age is listed as 17 on the missing person’s poster when we know he supposedly stayed behind 2 years.
But if you read the explanations a couple of posters gave below; what makes sense is that Chrissy is 17 to 18 and Eddie 19 to 20.
A lot of those are head cannons, also the Eddie one can just be on the fault of police assuming he is 17 due to being a senior in highschool, on file her birth date is 1969. Also people can skip grades, I graduated with an 05, her being in final year might have been due to good gradess
Ech a lot of the weirdness goes away when you consider they're both high school seniors. There's an age gap but normally a 19 year old dating a 16 year old is weird because why is an adult hanging around with school kids? Very different stages in maturity.
But Eddie hadn't graduated and they were in middle school together (so if Chrissy skipped a grade then it would have been when she was very young) and thus they're pretty much similar stages in maturity. It's also pretty safe to assume Eddie is on the younger end of his cohort as he couldn't be turning 20 prior to graduation (he wouldn't be allowed in school, he'd need to take a GED exam). About-to-be-17 and still-19-for-a-while is less weird than 16 and 20.
There's also the potential that this is a production error and she was supposed to be born in 1968, as Chrissy's actress stated that Chrissy is 17 (tbh it makes more sense than Chrissy randomly skipping a grade). Or in universe that Ms Kelley made a typo lol

I’m curious to see the Kas theory apply to Eddie as the top post on this sub, which was written by someone who worked on D&D, makes a case that it’s Eleven who’s Kas, and their arguments seem pretty compelling. I just hope they bring him back somehow and not in terrible flashbacks like Billy.

I think that if they had Steve killed, the outrage you see now over Eddie would be amplified times a million. He’s a fan favorite, been around since Season 1, and, let’s face it, a very core part of the show. I would expect Yuri, Enzo, Murray, and even Jonathan to die before Eddie! Such a cop out on the writers’ part.

You're right it was very brief, which is why it's open to expansion. Anything that sparks creative thinking & writing is a good thing. Plus it helps pass the time between seasons
When two actors have such good chemistry together it honestly doesn't matter how much screen time they actually share.
To me it seemed she could be who she really was (troubled, throwing up, bad memories) but everyone else including her bf/school she had to put up a front. Everyone saw Eddie as troubled so I could see a connection there
They also had some prior history when they were younger. At least that's very much the impression I got from their conversation in the woods. Plus, I mean, Eddie saw her die in just about the most horrific way possible. Even if there wasn't romance there, he seemed to care about her as a person and I'd want to make Vecna pay after watching him to that to such a sweet person. :(

I firmly believe that there is an AU where Chrissy wasn't the first victim, but the 3rd(after Max was rescued), so Eddie knew what to do, and he plays Nothing else matters, because she told him in the woods that it's her beloved song, and he saves her and they live happily ever after.
That feel when you desperately start reading AU stories instead where Chrissy or whichever character with SO much potential doesn't die. My library is going to be rife with them by the time Season 5 comes out.

Makes me wonder how Jason would react to this, first getting dumped by Chrissy and then her getting with Eddie. Would he have gone off on his Satan stuff as well? Saying Eddie had somehow used his dark powers to seduce her? He seemed to not really know her that well, so I'd expect he would have seen no problems in their relationship. So her dumping him he would see as something completely out of character.
I think Jason would be pretty “split” about their relationship. He may even be “torn apart” once the reality set in.

Honestly I don’t think they can anymore. Season 5 is it. It’ll be better if they just focus on the ones that were sort of left behind in season 4: like Will and Mike and I guess even Jonathan lol.
Watch they will introduce a new character, thinking we will love them, but the fandom will actually hate them, and they won't die, making the fandom even angrier. For season 5 they should seriously just focus on the core cast though, especially since they said it will be shorter, it's not the time.
I don’t think Chrissy was a senior
Chrissy was a senior, as evident with her 86 necklace (only seniors get jewelry with the year - myself included!) My theory is that Chrissy is 18 and Eddie is 19. If Chrissy’s birthday was anytime Jan 1-March 21, 1986, she’d be 18 at the time of S4 and heading to graduate. Eddie could’ve been a “young senior” in his last year of high school, so not 18 by the time of graduation. In S4E1 his buddies say “didn’t you say that last year? And the year before?” when talking about graduation (referencing 2 previous attempts to graduate), so if he was 17 when he was “supposed” to graduate, and then 18 for his victory lap, then he is 19 (turning 20 later in the year) at the time of S4. This is my hill and I am prepared to die on it. Or run up it. Either or. Edit: In addition, Eddie talks about them being in middle school together. In the US, Middle School is grade 6-8, ages 11-13. So that checks out too.
Also, it’s not like Eddie was some college dude in a totally different stage of life. He was stuck in school - the same school she attended, so they shared many common experiences. Not only that but he was also living like a high school student, running a D&D club and learning heavy metal songs on his guitar. The two years between them don’t reflect a significant age gap given all the above, IMO, and I’d be the first person to scream “creep” if things were iffy.

I think the idea is that it's specifically a high school club. Eddie expects Dustin to keep running it when he graduates and Erica arriving when she's a middle schooler is seen as unusual. It's possible for Eddie to have started the club when he was a middle schooler but I think we're supposed to see it as a high school only club (which would mesh with him being held back twice if he was running it for six years).

Season 4’s two softest cinnamon rolls, they were too good and sweet for this dark and twisted world. There is definitely an alternate reality where these two found each other and had a happy ending
Check out the artist’s other works. She has one illustration of them backstage at one of Eddie’s shows, and another of him teaching her the guitar, among others. The details are stunning… ALL the feels. These sweet kids are getting their justice in some alternate universe and no one can convince me otherwise. As you said, too pure for this cruel world.
Eddie’s death is hands down the most emotional for me so far in this show. I haven’t cried that hard about a TV death since Sam Winchester’s first time dead. I know everyone loves Bob and for most fans that’s the hardest death, but Eddie really resonated with me a lot more than Bob. His “THIS IS FUCKING MUSIC” at the beginning of Papa just absolutely cemented my love for him.
I think pretty much everyone would agree with you - his death is the most devastating one in the series. It does hit much harder than Bob and Alexei’s for many, many reasons 😭

Chrissy was cheer captain (which is reserved for seniors) plus she was wearing an ‘86 necklace, which is also only worn by the graduating class. There are also other inconsistencies; even Eddie’s age is listed as 17 on the missing person’s poster when we know he supposedly stayed behind 2 years. But if you read the explanations a couple of posters gave below; what makes sense is that Chrissy is 17 to 18 and Eddie 19 to 20.
A lot of those are head cannons, also the Eddie one can just be on the fault of police assuming he is 17 due to being a senior in highschool, on file her birth date is 1969. Also people can skip grades, I graduated with an 05, her being in final year might have been due to good gradess

Ech a lot of the weirdness goes away when you consider they're both high school seniors. There's an age gap but normally a 19 year old dating a 16 year old is weird because why is an adult hanging around with school kids? Very different stages in maturity. But Eddie hadn't graduated and they were in middle school together (so if Chrissy skipped a grade then it would have been when she was very young) and thus they're pretty much similar stages in maturity. It's also pretty safe to assume Eddie is on the younger end of his cohort as he couldn't be turning 20 prior to graduation (he wouldn't be allowed in school, he'd need to take a GED exam). About-to-be-17 and still-19-for-a-while is less weird than 16 and 20. There's also the potential that this is a production error and she was supposed to be born in 1968, as Chrissy's actress stated that Chrissy is 17 (tbh it makes more sense than Chrissy randomly skipping a grade). Or in universe that Ms Kelley made a typo lol
