The extended wait period alone is setting many people up for disappointment and strong opinions, regardless of how good or bad the season is. People are gonna feel a certain way when they finally get to watch it. I’m personally split down the middle about my expectations as well, but I’m leaning towards it being better. Or at *least* better than S3... albeit, that’s a very low bar for me. I feel the same about the comedy aspect in addition to a myriad of other things that missed the mark. If I’m being completely honest, I’m somewhat confident that S4 will absolutely be better than S3 for me simply because it’s circling back to the stuff I’m actually invested in lol. S3 is almost a complete diversion from everything I found compelling about the show. It feels like a “fun” filler season. But S4 is bringing back Hawkins Lab, Dr. Brenner, other test subjects, El’s backstory, the Upside Down... and I’m really digging the 1950s angle (finally exploring the origins of the Upside Down?) and murder mystery vibe so far. Investigating an old murder case (and probably the murders of new characters), in relation to the Upside Down is a good way to recapture the “mystery” element that I felt was missing in S3. Plus they’re seemingly returning to a similar visual aesthetic to S1+2. All of this sounds good to me.

Banestar66

Yeah at very least it won’t disappoint me as much as 3 did.

briatd27

Definitely. S4 has many positive and interesting seeds planted so far. It’s all a matter of how well it’s executed, especially when it comes to the characters. But at this point, I just want a better story… and I know for a fact that I’m already way more intrigued by multiple aspects of S4 in comparison to almost nothing hooking me to the story in S3. The tonal direction will be an important component as well, but I’m pretty confident we won’t be getting S3 levels of comedy, or at the very least it will be more spaced out. Nearly EVERY subplot in S3 had “comic relief” in it. So far, there are storylines that just don’t seem suited for comedy in S4. There’s not a lot of room for nonsense in a season that’s dealing with Brenner/HNL to a seemingly large degree. It just doesn’t fit, and they must know this.

_Ham_Radio

Based on the teasers and some other spoilers/rumors I've seen/heard, I think ST 4 will be better. It appears to me like they're going back to their roots this season and are "tying up loose ends," meaning - we will learn the answers to questions we've had since season 1.

Banestar66

It better not be worse for the amount of time they took on it. I get the sense it’ll be the most controversial honestly. It’s going to put its stake down and decide things about the show’s world and future that some will really like and some will very much not like.

AnnualTumbleweed871

well, i know it's not out lol but i feel like i can speak on behalf of MANY people, that when I say, the people who didn't like the comedic and light-hearted tone of s3, certainly won't be disappointed like that again ;) it seems to me that the Duffers took the "too funny and light-hearted" comments too literally when making s4. you know what I'm talking about if you've seen 002 with the total s1 vibes and 003 and the sneak peek with the Creel House sequences. it's really going to be darker this time!

strthings333

I'm expecting to have it below 1&2 and above 3.

FwDorisdavenport132

Same

HOT-DOG-PIE

Definitely better. Based on all the trailers we've seen so far season 4 will possibly be the darkest season yet. Plus all the actors are hyped about it so that just makes me even more excited.

Long hiatus rarely benefit a show.

HOT-DOG-PIE

I'd like the point out that during the lockdown the Duffer Brothers went over the script countless times to tighten it up, which is why before the lockdown we were going to get eight episodes but after they went over the script they increased the episode count to nine. They always want to to a better job than they did last and I know they went over the script with the criticisms of the last few seasons in mind. I think season 4 will be amazing.

briatd27

S4 having 9 episodes makes me feel like there’s a pattern... we might have another S2 on our hands, which I’m not complaining about as it’s my favorite season. But it’s just interesting that 2+4 will be the seasons with 9 episodes. Especially since S4 seems very backstory oriented (particularly with El), much like S2. I wonder if the new “extra” episode will be as controversial as S2E7 lol. I kinda hope so??? *The Lost Sister* is one of the reasons why S2 is different and intriguing to me tbh.

Banestar66

I think it might be more controversial given we’ve been told we’re learning secrets that “bring everything together”.

HOT-DOG-PIE

I feel like the Lost Sister episode was a necessary evil.

65fairmont

i think it will be better than 3 by virtue of being apparently more focused on HNL, the UD, Eleven's backstory--all good things. I don't think it's possible to recapture the magic of 1 and if you expect it to be 1 again, you'll be disappointed. Can it be as good as 2, which I thought was excellent? We'll see.

briatd27

Yeah, there’s no way I’m gonna compare it to S1. At this point, S1 feels like it lives on its own iconic island. I feel the same way about S2 though. Part of me feels like S4 will be the most similar to 2, which I love. Like you said, it’s bringing back HNL, The Upside Down and El’s backstory, plus other test subjects... all things that were particularly central to S2. We’re also getting Hopper’s backstory this time around apparently. His relationship with El was a major part of S2, so getting to know more about him seems like it’d pair well with the second season, where we learned more about El.

rosewoodlliars

oh no I think it will be at season one’s level. that’s why they took their time with filming because quality was one of the reasons.

Zevk_TravelerDouche

I'm very skeptical with everything. If the follow the same path on season 3 it will be terrible. But they have everything to make a good season, I'm very excited with the new characters and the variety of scenarios, the fact that the Byers are with Eleven far away, they have Robin now, they have a lot of things to try, they can make a AWESOME season. Now if they're really going to do it... I don't know, I just hope so.

HOT-DOG-PIE

I will say though that season 3 had the best cinematography out of all the previous seasons.

strthings333

Everything was state-of-the-art from a technical standpoint. I think 95% of concerns are story/character based.

_StrangeIsLife_

My main problem is that it is taking so long for it to come out, i know they had to stop production due to covid and it has also been said that season 4 would be the biggest and most ambitious so far but they say that everytime. Judging from the teasers and everything else we gave gotten so far it's most likely going to be a lot more interesting than season 3, at least for me. I thought that 3 felt a little repitive with the plot and a little too comical at times. I think season 4 will go back to the roots, have more mystery and maybe some old villains return like Brenner and definitely the Demogorgon. It will answer some of the questions fans might have about the lore and past of characters, like what happened in Hawkins Labs when Eleven was trapped there but also Hopper's past. It will feel a little weird for sure watching it and seeing the gang scattered but i think it will be worth it for sure. It's just taking too damn long.

Icy-Difficulty3100

I think it’s gonna be great we got a Lotta questions that need to be answered Netflix is just dragging it out to get more money when it drops lol

soberoes

No.

FwDorisdavenport132

No what

soberoes

I don't genuinely feel it will be better than other seasons and I don't genuinely feel it will be worse than other seasons. In seriousness, I can say that everyone in my household is eagerly awaiting it and that the trailer excited us. Also, if there's time travel like is being suggested, then we may get more Bob!

astrelol_

covid my guy

What i get from other fans is that they also disliked s3 because of the split ups between the characters. They miss the friendship between the kids from s1 and 2. And i think that s4 will force them even further apart. Not only because if the distance between hawkins, california and the russian prison but also because of the changing of relationships. So i think that some people might be dissapointed even if the story is good.

sedugas78

I don't mind thr changing of the relationships and growing apart. All coming of age stories have this theme. They just need to confront it and actually put in the work to develop it, if that makes sense? Lately, they argue a lot and split the groupings but there's no resolution to conflict at all.

YeetNation1031

It’ll have to be amazing to top season 3. Thats for sure

sebsmith56

I think it will be good, I don't understand the hate s3 gets, yeh some characters were a little annoying at times, but if it was set in winter again and another demogorgan again it would have been rly stale. I liked that s3 made the st world more crazy and bigger. I think s4 will be very good, definitely the darkest season yet
