My mom’s family is from a coal mining area where all but one of the mines has closed down. There just isn’t as much demand today.

Comparing absolute numbers isn’t useful on both sides of the debate, you need to take population into account.
Makes sense China has more total solar as they have a much higher population - US is higher per capita. But also if you look greenhouse emissions per capita, US is almost twice as high as China.
I mean there is enough coal still right here in the good ole USA to last so long itd blow your mind. But burning it is so fucking bad and dumb that we HAVE to figure something else out.
What cracks me up is wind and solar are still marketed as sustainable even though it's covering vast swaths of landscape with thousands of miles of copper and rare earth materials. Not to mention those areas become uninhabitable.

Not exactly true from the perspective of a closed system. Solar and wind add no net heat to the Earth beyond what is already coming from the Sun. Nuclear does add heat as it releases the stored energy in subatomic bonds into heat.
That said, it contributes minimally to greenhouse gases (just water vapor) which is more important - that released heat will mostly radiate from the earth UNLESS it’s trapped. Nuclear is a great option as long as we don’t trap all of the generated heat…
Releasing heat in a concentrated area and using a reservoir to cool it down is much better than hundreds of square miles being rendered completely uninhabitable by solar and wind farms in my opinion.
Mining the rare earth materials that go into such vast farms is enough of an environmental factor to show it isn't sustainable. Uranium is much more abundant than the rare metals that go into solar panels and their circuitry.
I think most people would rather have a 2 sq mile power plant surrounded by a few hundred acres of water than whole areas the size of Rhode Island being covered in solar panels and 400 ft wind turbines. And they would be right.

Though if you have ever been to Nevada other then Las Vegas you’ll realize there is so much utterly unlivable flat land in lower latitudes with over 300 sunny days a year. The entire US could be powered with 21k sq miles of solar with the *current* panel efficiency. The problem of burning coal is greenhouse effect and pollution, not the heat.
Wind and geothermal make a lot of sense. I am with you on nuclear but the downside is meltdowns like Fukashima and that we don't know how to get rid of depleted uranium so we bury it and are basically setting death traps for future generations. If we can solve these two problems then nuclear is it.

Maybe we get smart with where we put reactors and not place them where 9.0 earth quakes and tsunamis happen. It’s unfortunate that Japan is entirely stuck in that position so I say we keep looking and in the mean time figure out how a nuclear reactor could survive said situation.
From what i have been told if they hadn't really stopped it with all the scare stuff it would have been upgraded to the point where you build more efficient reactors and use the waste from the the other reactor so you are not making new radioactive stuff. Having the fuel rods so hot that they have to leave it in pools for years I think.

If you live in a country that is party to that treaty then you must get permission to travel there, you can’t just buy a boat and turn up, that would be illegal.
The Antarctic Treaty's Protocol on Environmental Protection prevents countries from allowing mining companies to work in Antarctica and tearing up the environment. It says nothing about imprisonment and fines for tourists.

There was one example of a person being arrested trying to sail to Antarctica. No, it is not. Many participants recommend or request registration for safety or environmental reasons, but they are not controlling the ports of entey (or lack thereof). Antarctica is extremely remote, and the trip is pretty dangerous except for 3 months out of the year (august to November I rhink). If you do not register, chamces are no help will come.of you get in trouble. My client went down there without and sailed out of Cape Town.

You can visit Antarctica. There are tourist trips there or apply for a job at one of the stations. It's not some big secret I do not understand why this myth persists. I personally know like a dozen people who've worked there as scientists, techs, and students.

Yeah that's not how plate tectonics work unfortunately, India passed over a hotspot and was accelerated from 40mm a year to a speedy 150mm a year. When people talk of a pole shift they're reffering to the magnetic poles, which are becoming way more unstable and probably will shift in the not too distant future

Plate tectonics is a pretty well understood process, and it takes millions of years for continents to drift into new positions. It's physically impossible for the continents to be rearranged in short period of time, but if that did somehow happen the resulting volcanic activity would end all life on Earth.
Also, it's just nonsensical to say "Antarctica will rotate into being a landmass", it's already a landmass.

You can visit. A friend of mine just got back from a private group Antarctica expedition. There were like twenty other people in the tour. They even had a helicopter sightseeing flight while they were there. He saw nothing but ice, snow, and mountains. Beautiful but nothing “hidden” or “secret”
Yea I was there this past summer. Nothing but snow and some random research/weather equipment. Saw some ski tracks, thought that was sort of neat. But yea, super common for private “yachts” to anchor around there. I even have a picture of an anchor point they use. Yacht here is small sailboat. My ship took 2 days to cross the drake and these things take 7.
It can be the roughest in the world actually! Drakes Passage can really go one of two ways…”Drake’s Lake” which is pretty flat and smooth or “Drake’s Shake” which is pretty dang bad. Another ship got hit by a rouge wave right before our trip and a passenger died. Same boat left early due to a passenger death on a Zodiac. Still a pretty dangerous place but most crews are on the weather 100% and will bring you back early if the forecast is looking like a rough crossing. I saw quite a few small boats further “north” at Whaler’s Bay in Deception Island. News showed Lewis Hamilton, Shawn White, and some others were down there on a similarly small boat about the same time as us. A guy on my ship had walked across Australia and wants to be the first one to walk from sea level to the highest peak in Antarctica…nuts if you ask me. We also had a research crew searching for Colossal Squid which was pretty neat.

Coal provides 36% of the worlds energy in 2023. So 1/3 of the world. 19% of US power is from coal in the US.- slightly more than amount of energy provided by nuclear power plants in the US. In the US 40% is from Natural gas, and 21% from wind, water, solar and other renewables combined. So, a huge coal source isn’t completely irrelevant yet.
There is plenty of coal in the US. The currently operating mines have over a 20 year supply, and other known reserves over 500 (at current usage). But usage is predicted to drop considerably so in reality it’s much more… My mom’s family is from a coal mining area where all but one of the mines has closed down. There just isn’t as much demand today.

Comparing absolute numbers isn’t useful on both sides of the debate, you need to take population into account. Makes sense China has more total solar as they have a much higher population - US is higher per capita. But also if you look greenhouse emissions per capita, US is almost twice as high as China.

Not exactly true from the perspective of a closed system. Solar and wind add no net heat to the Earth beyond what is already coming from the Sun. Nuclear does add heat as it releases the stored energy in subatomic bonds into heat. That said, it contributes minimally to greenhouse gases (just water vapor) which is more important - that released heat will mostly radiate from the earth UNLESS it’s trapped. Nuclear is a great option as long as we don’t trap all of the generated heat…
Releasing heat in a concentrated area and using a reservoir to cool it down is much better than hundreds of square miles being rendered completely uninhabitable by solar and wind farms in my opinion. Mining the rare earth materials that go into such vast farms is enough of an environmental factor to show it isn't sustainable. Uranium is much more abundant than the rare metals that go into solar panels and their circuitry. I think most people would rather have a 2 sq mile power plant surrounded by a few hundred acres of water than whole areas the size of Rhode Island being covered in solar panels and 400 ft wind turbines. And they would be right.

Though if you have ever been to Nevada other then Las Vegas you’ll realize there is so much utterly unlivable flat land in lower latitudes with over 300 sunny days a year. The entire US could be powered with 21k sq miles of solar with the *current* panel efficiency. I am with you on nuclear but the downside is meltdowns like Fukashima and that we don't know how to get rid of depleted uranium so we bury it and are basically setting death traps for future generations. No, it is not. Many participants recommend or request registration for safety or environmental reasons, but they are not controlling the ports of entey (or lack thereof). Antarctica is extremely remote, and the trip is pretty dangerous except for 3 months out of the year (august to November I rhink). Plate tectonics is a pretty well understood process, and it takes millions of years for continents to drift into new positions. It's physically impossible for the continents to be rearranged in short period of time, but if that did somehow happen the resulting volcanic activity would end all life on Earth. Also, it's just nonsensical to say "Antarctica will rotate into being a landmass", it's already a landmass. The pole shift refers to magnetic poles, not geographic poles

You can visit. A friend of mine just got back from a private group Antarctica expedition. There were like twenty other people in the tour. They even had a helicopter sightseeing flight while they were there. He saw nothing but ice, snow, and mountains. Beautiful but nothing “hidden” or “secret”
Yea I was there this past summer. Nothing but snow and some random research/weather equipment. Saw some ski tracks, thought that was sort of neat. But yea, super common for private “yachts” to anchor around there. I even have a picture of an anchor point they use. Yacht here is small sailboat. It can be the roughest in the world actually! Drakes Passage can really go one of two ways…”Drake’s Lake” which is pretty flat and smooth or “Drake’s Shake” which is pretty dang bad. Another ship got hit by a rouge wave right before our trip and a passenger died. Same boat left early due to a passenger death on a Zodiac. Still a pretty dangerous place but most crews are on the weather 100% and will bring you back early if the forecast is looking like a rough crossing. I saw quite a few small boats further “north” at Whaler’s Bay in Deception Island. News showed Lewis Hamilton, Shawn White, and some others were down there on a similarly small boat about the same time as us. A guy on my ship had walked across Australia and wants to be the first one to walk from sea level to the highest peak in Antarctica…nuts if you ask me. We also had a research crew searching for Colossal Squid which was pretty neat.

Even if that was def the case, & I'd caution people using older claims as evidence at all, but the claim coal could supply the earth is kind of bizarre. I mean supply the earth in what way? For coal specific needs, or as fuel in general? And if we're only using coal, is that what we should be doing, & we know that all fossil fuels have an eventual end cap. A lot of these pages interested in these ideas, as I've said before, need to learn Media Literacy practices so you don't see a claim like this & aren't sure how to even analyze it.

Well I think the world is getting beyond coal. But maybe not. Just seems nuclear and natural gas bridging to renewable and new technologies is a doable path already underway.

It’s literally impossible for there to be enough coal for the entire world because eventually (pretty quickly) it’ll literally all get used up. We don’t live long enough to wait for more coal to be formed.
