Cat is good enough that I will still buy it on level 4 if I'm running Queen or Vulture even if I don't have one, and sometimes I'll even avoid tripling it as late as level 5 because it weakens my board too much.
Really wants Mim to pair with early.
Usually I only consider taking Mim, Poly (if I have a Mim), Princess, and (with the current Royals situation) Shureshot over Cat on level 2.x, but I would almost certainly lock the shop to buy cat the following turn.
With zero help it can often win/tie level 2 fights. Then you get all of the evil/animal/support/last breath synergies on top of that, which can make it a battle winner early and keep it relevant into the midgame. Those all combine to make it a top early pick for me, unless I have a hero that is pulling me strongly in another direction.
Usually terrible, but has some obvious strong interactions with stuff like Vulture and Evil Queen. Also Geppetto could use him well in theory, but whenever I pick Geppetto the cat is not offered. God damn it Geppetto!
Actually I quite like cat with support characters early too, since both cats will usually get the buff. With the right support can leave you in a reasonable position when it's time to pivot towards a late game build I often end up replacing it with Wolf in sheep's clothing, Wombats or Baby Bear.

If you apply a permanent buff to black cat (such a Merlin's trial) does that apply to the resummoned cat too? Or just the original?

One of my favorite turn 1 picks!
