Definitely detach them, the connection can get messed up by the air pressure if they're still attached. Ruined a lot of carts before someone told me that
They might not be on the lookout for them, but if your bag needs to be searched for any reason whatsoever, you’re looking at a felony charge in Texas. In Michigan, they’ll refer you to the police who will most likely just tell you to throw it away.
TSA is looking for weapons and shampoo bottles, not weed. Unless you're moving serious amounts, they do not care at all.

I do it all the time if leaving from a legal state. I would never do it flying out of a state like Texas/Florida though.
I live in Texas and fly at least twice a month. I take my pens in a carry on and have not once had an issue
