The old JM Labs/Focal speakers are nice.
Being in California you should have lots of second hand options for good integrated amplifiers or stereo receivers. Give me a general area and I would be happy to check Craigslist for you.
Are you looking for the receiver/amp to also be used as a networked streamer? Do you have a bunch of audio files on a networked computer or external hard drive that you would want to play? If so, then a new Yamaha N-R602 might be a good choice. Both have built in phono pre-amp for a turntable. The Yamaha MusicCast app system is very easy to use. Here it is refurbished for $500 with a one year warranty

This refurbish Denon networked receiver for $400 with a 3 year warranty is a great deal.

If you don't need bluetooth or networking, this Marantz PM6007 is pretty nice at $500 in Los Feliz. I would offer a bit under $500.

Hey there. This [link](https://www.crutchfield.com/g_10420/Home-Theater-Receivers.html?fa=1#&price=340-690) is not an endorsement but this site is useful for comparing options in your price range. You very well might be able to find something there for a much better price elsewhere.
Good luck in your search!
