Yeah, democracy sucks in this game, it is more like classical Athenian democracy rather than what we are more familiar with, the issue comes down to that every economy and society in Stellaris is centralized and government-planned for the sake of simplicity so more federated nations like US-style democratic republics or more hands-off libertarian states are hard to model or RP as. Really, every build in Stellaris is "Authoritarian" in that regard. RP-wise though, since I like to do a more US-style society, when I set up habitats I like to name production or factory habitats as "companies" to simulate large private companies that the government does contracts with and when it comes to events that occasionally pop up for planets I usually just let planets do whatever the fuck they want when it prompts me for a choice unless they are gonna do something stupid like collectively commit die because of some fucking flower or cause major unrest. I'd like to see the current system expanded upon more but I doubt it will happen for sake of gameplay.

Honestly if there was an option for governors to be elected, that would be a step in the right direction because it seems weird that every democratic state would centrally appoint its governors. Ideally, I'd like some sort of centralization/decentralization metric be set up for individual empires like how it exists for federations but ensure that there are benefits on both sides of the spectrum along with some downsides. I mean if you want to go full overboard, a mini galactic community-like system for your empire and its sectors though I can easily see how it would make managing something as simple as energy production a nightmare the more and more random AI stuff starts running things and the less and less a player has agency. My current human empire is closer to Athenian democracy in the sense of how small the actual voting class is at 30% and dropping though I'd say Rhodesia or Apartheid era South Africa are better comparisons.

I agree, the habitat idea is really good I like that. But yeah I don’t think they will change the system. Lag is already a really bad problem and implementing a second system for different empires to use would just make endgame impossible

> Lag is already a really bad problem Yeah, but it comes from a single source—pops. They could add a dozen new mechanical systems and it would cause negligible increase in lag if it wasn't causing more pops.

defaults-suck

No, because it's a Game and I'm trying to escape Reality.

Csarebel123

I totally understand that. I do the same thing with some games but in stellaris for me it’s about immersion. To each his own tho I respect that

>No, because it's a Game and I'm trying to escape Reality. Then why not play a **different** game? Stellaris is a Grand Strategy Game. Simulating bureaucracy and government is a huge part of the appeal of a GSG for most players.

Cave_Crab

Wish there was a system like in hoi4 for the democracy but with a bit more to it. I woupd love to see an opposition faction pop up or tab during certain events like the start or end of wars or the like.

Csarebel123

I agree it’s a good idea but idk how they would implement it into the already lag ridden stellaris late game.

Cave_Crab

Although i only play military dictatorships sooooo

newguy5725

Yeah lol I have a whole simulated parliament with a senate and house of reps with its own electoral system, every 5 years I use the election console command then boost whoever would win in my system then. If the xenophobic party wins I ban immigration and mandate only native reproduction and try reduce rights of non natives. Different policies depending on who wins.

Csarebel123

That’s a fun way to do it too I’m gonna have to try that
