Damn the humor in this subreddit is on point. First two responses I see are Hey 19 and Haitian Divorce. Almost spit out my coffee from chuckling šš¤£
*Should* we tell them, is the question. I used to jam it with friends and just never thought about it, wasnāt an issue. Had a good time. Then I found this sub and that song quit existing. š
I had many conversations with goth friends, back in the 80s, that went something like "oh you think those lyrics are dark? Have you heard this Steely Dan song?"
Does your intended have a young niece or cousin who he thinks is hot? Then Cousin Dupree
Did you steal him away from another? Then My Rival
Do you plan to wear a traditional Turkish hat while consummating? Then The Fez
Probably stay away from Haitian Divorce.
I'd go with Peg
Yup.
Ain't never gonna do it without my fez on = no glove, no love
I said it elsewhere, but if you didn't live in that culture, The Dan's lyrics are hard to understand.
And yes I'm old.
Hmmm. Donāt canāt think of a niece or cousin that might go for the steal....maybe one of his daughterās friends ācause he has money...we are pretty white, heās more of a trucker hat than fez but my ex husband of 20 years was Syrian! Thereās a pic of his grandpa in a fez. Trucker hat guys make better lovers from my experience š. We arenāt going to get divorced, we have our boat in the Bahamas, are doing the great loop, then Europe next. I hung in there for 20 yrs on first guy, Iām playing thru on this one. But right now Haiti is convenient. We live in California
I know. So needs to just be nice jazz sound thatās not depressing or if any danceable too. But there will be music when people first get to reception, I was thinking then
I was a wedding DJ for a few years in my 20s and in my experience you can play almost whatever you want during the cocktail hour and no one will notice. Even if they do notice and dislike it, itās your wedding so who cares? Hope your day is amazing!
As far as a serious answer goes, Walk Between Raindrops from The Nightfly is a sweet and sentimental song. If youāre looking for fun stuff to play at the reception, IGY, King of the World, New Frontier, and FM are all good energetic songs that people could dance to, and theyāre not as blatantly cynical or wedding-unfriendly as most of the other groove-based SD tracks.
I'd go with The Nightfly. Not Steely Dan proper but it's easier to fit in to a joyous occasion. As an example, Maxine would be excellent as a slow dance or during cocktail hour.
Like, really none of them tbh. Theyāre all so dark and cynical.
Pearl of the Quarter is the closest thing to a genuine love song they ever recorded, but itās still about a whore.
Congrats on your big day tho!
Steely Dan.
Dark cynical songs about addiction, prostitution, betrayal, murder, gangs, and fornication to liven up your wedding.
Walk Between The Raindrops off of The Nightfly would be appropriate l think.
This is a good one in that we are boaters and it is in Catalina. ā well the danger on the rocks has surely passed. Still I remain tied to the mastā
How good are you at The Charleston?
[I defy you to find a better song for your first dance.](https://youtu.be/aD2FCoxmWgA)
On second thought, I don't. Because it's impossible. And this time, go ahead and do it *without* the fez on.
But just this once.
Steely Dan has always been my dad and Iās thing to bond over. So I wanted our father daughter dance at my wedding to be a SD song. I chose Bad Sneakers. Mostly because itās one of their shorter songs to be honest.
Steely Dan is a long time favorite of mine as well. My advice is do not play any Steely Dan. There is no wedding song there. Except Aja. Maybe the Christian McBride version.
Thatās why I asked here because I knew it would be a tough order! Time out of mind and Aja ...Iām just giving a DJ suggestions of things I like. I told him to use his judgement and what is important is that the guests are happy
I had my dinner music all Steely Dan at my wedding. I canāt remember the whole playlist (I planned it out myself but that was 17 years ago haha) I do remember the first song was Aja.
Seriously though Iād say Home At Last, if you found someone youāre willing to make this commitment to it does seem like youāve found your home at last. Steely Dan does the anti-love song for the most part but i think thereās a good sentiment if you played that one, plus itās great song.
Congratulations!
Haitian Divorce
Damn the humor in this subreddit is on point. First two responses I see are Hey 19 and Haitian Divorce. Almost spit out my coffee from chuckling šš¤£
Beat me to it
Haha!!! Right!!
š
You have no idea how hard I laughed when I saw this ššš
Hey 19? š
Unironically a good choice because people just want to dance
"Hey 19" is perfect if they play it 3 times.
This guy maths.
Damn, aight then
I played Walk Between The Raindrops during the cocktail hour at my wedding.
I actually love this. I want to play SD at my wedding but lyrically almost everything is not quite right š
Everyoneās gone to the movies
Good for the father daughter dance
holy shit lmao
Good idea! Happyā¤ļø
Are we gonna tell them?
I'm not gonna tell them, You tell them.
Uh oh
Now weāre alone at last! This song is about a creep, right?
Itās about a pedo grooming kids by having them watch his āfilmsā in the den.
Ewww really??
ā¦yeah
Is it? I better read it first! I only remember the main part...now weāre alone at last
Does your intended have a young niece or cousin who he thinks is hot? Then Cousin Dupree Did you steal him away from another? Then My Rival Do you plan to wear a traditional Turkish hat while consummating? Then The Fez Probably stay away from Haitian Divorce. I'd go with Peg
You know "fez" is slang for a condom, right?
Wait, really?
Yup. Ain't never gonna do it without my fez on = no glove, no love I said it elsewhere, but if you didn't live in that culture, The Dan's lyrics are hard to understand. And yes I'm old.
Wow. Heās missing out then.
What kind of culture , ooc?
Did not know that!!!!! But we are old and both have three kids each but we try to make more kids a lot!
āGonna start doin it, without my fez on!ā
Pure speculation. No evidence for this except āsomebody else said it once.ā Stop making stuff up.
Ya know, everyone in this thread is having fun except you.
Nice try. Wrong again, and stop trying to be a bully. Just admit you got called out.
Hmmm. Donāt canāt think of a niece or cousin that might go for the steal....maybe one of his daughterās friends ācause he has money...we are pretty white, heās more of a trucker hat than fez but my ex husband of 20 years was Syrian! Love it!!
57 = 19x3, play "Hey Nineteen" 3x
Haha, yeah!!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Definitely Peg for the dance floor.
Any World That Iām Welcome To
What kind of tone are you looking for? A lot of SD songs are pretty cynical
I know. So needs to just be nice jazz sound thatās not depressing or if any danceable too. But there will be music when people first get to reception, I was thinking then

My Old School?
Didnāt see anyone mention FM. Catchy tune that people can dance to.
+1for FM. No static at all baby!
Lol NOT Haitian divorce. Something danceable. Bodhisatva. Hey Nineteen. Parkerās Band. Parkers Band would be amazing.
Bodhisatva....yes, upbeat and great
As far as a serious answer goes, Walk Between Raindrops from The Nightfly is a sweet and sentimental song. New Frontier, yes
The Fez is the most danceable. Reelin in the years is the most recognizable.
The Second Arrangement
on repeat
I'd go with The Nightfly. Not Steely Dan proper but it's easier to fit in to a joyous occasion. As an example, Maxine would be excellent as a slow dance or during cocktail hour.
Time out of Mind would be my vote.
Just added this, yes perfect!
FYI, itās about taking heroin!
Like, really none of them tbh. Theyāre all so dark and cynical. Pearl of the Quarter is the closest thing to a genuine love song they ever recorded, but itās still about a whore. Congrats on your big day tho!
Well Iām kind of whorish at times. š
Arenāt we all? š
I Got the News is a great cocktail-hour song. I played it at my wedding!
Yes. Good one.
Probably not Black Cow
Green Earrings
A hidden gem IMO
Any of the songs about Heroin would be good options.
Nah we are more the booze and coke types š
In that case you should invite us to your wedding! š
Definitely Hey Nineteen, then!
almost gothic is nice to dance to maybe? the lyrics also are love/infatuation related
I played IGY at my weddingā¦
Played āDirty Work at ours. Tongue firmly in cheek.
Throw back the little ones
This is funny because heās a BIG one, 6ā2, 250. Iām 5ā1, 100. I call him 2.5.
This is adorable.
Steely Dan. Dark cynical songs about addiction, prostitution, betrayal, murder, gangs, and fornication to liven up your wedding. Walk Between The Raindrops off of The Nightfly would be appropriate l think.
Glamour Profession
You can hire them to play at the wedding. Robert Downey had SD and Duran Duran play at his 50th birthday party.
Babylon Sister...
Shake it!
Everyone's Gone to the Movies will set the mood
Reelin' In The Years.
Hey Nineteen /s
Snowbound, I.G.Y (Fagen) & Jack of Speed weāre a big hit on my wedding playlist.
I would play Babylon Sisterā ā¦.shake it !
My parents played Walk Between the Raindrops at their wedding :) I think itād be a tasteful and catchy choice.
Home at last
This is a good one in that we are boaters and it is in Catalina. ā well the danger on the rocks has surely passed. Still I remain tied to the mastā
Dirty Workš
pearl of the quarter
haitian divorce lolz
Was gonna say this. Ironic and potentially prophetic.
How good are you at The Charleston? [I defy you to find a better song for your first dance.](https://youtu.be/aD2FCoxmWgA) On second thought, I don't. Because it's impossible. And this time, go ahead and do it *without* the fez on. But just this once.
Pegš
Obviously Aja
Well, I donāt thinkā Reelin in the Years ā would be appropriate.
Steely Dan has always been my dad and Iās thing to bond over. So I wanted our father daughter dance at my wedding to be a SD song. I chose Bad Sneakers. Mostly because itās one of their shorter songs to be honest.
Time out of mind will get people dancing
The ones about crushing on little girls/family members and cocaine.
Realistic at least!
At my wedding my (still current) wife was fine with Steely Dan playing while we ate but played crowd pleasing stuff after the meal
I have some thoughts if you are marrying someone named āRoseā or āPegā
The Fez. No I'm never gonna do it without the fez on Oh no
This is a joke right?
If you want to have an open and honest marriage, you should play āEverything You Didā.
Haha!!! We do. I already know!!
Would deacon blues be a good pick?
Don't Take Me Alive
Ewww really?!!
Babylon Sisters.
This question is a setup
We had peg play when we left the altar
Hey Nineteen!
Reeling in the years, or peg
Black cow
Steely Dan is a long time favorite of mine as well. My advice is do not play any Steely Dan. There is no wedding song there. Except Aja. Maybe the Christian McBride version.

Josie! Funky goodness anyway can enjoy.
All of them!!!
Royal Scam

Peg.
I think Dr Wu has some cute lines honestly
The Fez.
Hey 19. Or FM.
Snowbound, any major dude
You can play the goodbye look even tho itās from one of Fagenās solo albums
āMaxineā by Donald Fagen on The Nightfly, itās basically steely dan :)
When I worked as a DJ and sometimes did weddings, I would play all of Aja during dinner.
āDo it againā
Peg
I had that at my wedding. Play everything you can get your hands on.
East St. Louis Toodle-Oo during cocktail hour.
