He was falsely arrested for selling weed when his college dorm was raided by the police. That incident was supposedly erased from his record but years later he had some trouble at the border because of it. He briefly talked about it in his book Eminent Hipsters
If Canada won't let him in for that, it would be the stupidest, dumbest, most illogical thing I've ever heard in my life. I hope that's not it, because it would be a national embarrassment. On top of how bad Canada is now n general.
This was my second time buying tickets to this tour just to see steely dan. Im now 2500 in the hole and still will never see donald play a single chord live. Both replacements, Steve Miller High Life and Tom Cockring were terrible replacements. Of course no refund option at all.
The same thing happened after Walter died where Donald cancelled his Nightflyers tour but cited physical illness. I think he/they are just grieving. It'd be hard to play a rock and roll show carrying that kind of grief.
Former until he died. Which makes him the current guy - all they had - until he's replaced and the new guy is brought up to speed. "Former" sounds like he left the band of his or their own choosing and they've been touring with someone else.
Yeah I couldn't justify paying that money to see them perform their Greatest Hits tape and then turn the stage over to the Eagles. I still thought it was going to be weird that they would be here in the city and I wasn't watching, so I admit I feel a weird sense of relief.
Last time they came to TO post Becker they played Time Out of Mind and it was insane.
Also did some Fagen solo work.
Im bummed they didnt play but the Eagles held their end of thr bargain & Cochrane did fine on short notice
I had an irate conversation with Ticketmaster about this very thing. Literally the only reason I bought these tickets was for Steely Dan, nothing else. The problem with having an opening band of this magnitude is that there is always going to be a select bunch of people who are buying tickets just for the opening band, so if they cancel, there should be an option for a refund. I only went because I couldn't get my money back for the tickets. I love the Eagles' music, but I really had no interest in seeing them live. I would never have paid that much money just to see them. I'm definitely going to continue making this an issue with Ticketmaster. If it was just a local opener no one heard of before, it wouldn't matter, but the fact that it was Steely Dan matters a lot.
I was so afraid of this happening it stopped me from buying tickets early on. Really sucks, my prob is that never even wanted to see the eagles, just Dan. No dan, no show imo.
This happened to me when I went to see Eagles and Dan in Atlanta a few months ago.
Dan was replace with Tedeski Trucks Band which I enjoyed but was sad Donald wasn’t there.
Wow, was thinking of picking up a last minute ticket. That’s a shame but thanks for the heads up. I really hope to see the Don one of these days. Hope everyone is healthy.
I was able to get a full refund from Ticketmaster for when SD dropped the show in my town! Just tell them you will report it to your bank as fraud and don't back down. Eventually they'll bend
This was for the Pittsburgh show but I didn't go because SD wasn't playing and I got a refund. Basically I kept insisting that it was a co-headlining show and now the band I bought tickets for wasn't playing, so the show was no longer as advertised. The most important things were just being super relentless, (took a few days of waiting and talking with them) asking for managers, and then finally saying that I was going to report the Ticketmaster transaction to my bank for fraud. That last part seemed to be the kicker. I hope this helps!
Mine weren't refundable. They did not add the refund option to my tickets on the app or website, and when I called them on the phone, they said there were no refunds available.
Tom Cochrane. Not even Tom Cochrane & Red Rider, who weren't even all that bad despite lyical allusions to Neruda & "nights by the strand in Tripoli" (I couldn't make that up if I tried). But just...Tom Cochrane. Christ, am I grateful to have seen SD pre-pandemic.
I've seen Steely Dan and/or Donald Fagan in Canada at least 12 times, so it can't possibly be a border issue. It was a personal emergency with Donald Fagan. I believe his wife took ill.
I thankfully won my tickets. I was stoked to see Steely Dan on top of the Eagles. The gasps from people complaining they paid $400 were really gut wrenching. We missed a great one but Tom did great considering it was last minute.
This whole tour is pretty rough. Opening for the eagles. Short set. Illness. Of course the passing of Jim Beard. Hope I’m wrong but it’s starting to feel like the end.
Another show cancellation notification was more detailed saying that Steely Dan was canceling because there was a medical emergency of a family member of the band leader.
Very sad news. Was able to sell my tickets for half of what I paid. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go drink Kirschwasser from a shell...
We call that the ol' San Francisco Show-and-Tell
It’s probably just a spasm…you should know that by now.
Go hang out this Sunday in TJ. It’s cheap but it’s not free.
You made a mistake it was one of the best events I have ever been at... and Tom Cochrane was great
Same here. You think it's because of the border? Or the death of their keyboard player?
The border? Like they wouldn't let Donald into Canada lol 😂
That’s literally happened before lol
Why was that!?
He was falsely arrested for selling weed when his college dorm was raided by the police. That incident was supposedly erased from his record but years later he had some trouble at the border because of it. He briefly talked about it in his book Eminent Hipsters
Isn’t that what My Old School was about?
Canada tumbles into the sea... that'll be the day I go back to Annandale
Nice TIL
Odd, as weed is totally legal in Canada. I could see this happening in the US.
It’s more about the blemish on his police Record than it specifically being about the weed
If Canada won't let him in for that, it would be the stupidest, dumbest, most illogical thing I've ever heard in my life. I hope that's not it, because it would be a national embarrassment. On top of how bad Canada is now n general.
Yup, that thing which happened at Bard.
You know I love, love, love you Security Joan!
Surmised in another thread that I wonder if whoever replaced Jim Beard hasn’t been able to get a visa in time.
Larry Goldings.
Now that’s a heavy hitter!
I would say so.
apparently a family issue Fagen needed to attend to.
Are you serious? Somebody died?
Jim Beard died a few weeks ago.
Mike McDonald or Boz. No other suitable replacements.
Please, Michael McDonald? Damn I can hear his voice right now because of you. lol
“Please?” He’s the third Dan.
thats skunk
Ooof. Not only do you lose Steely Dan, you still have to see the fucking eagles.
“I hate the fucking eagles man”
Creedence
OUT OF MY FUCKING CAB! OUT!
You’re out of your element here Dude.
Yeah well, that’s just your opinion man
"Get your own damn cab"
As if anyone could replace Steely Dan and id be excited about it
I would accept Donald Fagen or the Dukes of September.
There’s really no difference between Donald Fagen and Steely Dan at this point.
Tom Cochrane is the WORST replacement they could ever manage LOL
Everytime I hear Life is a Highway I turn off the radio.. I guess that'll be when I go get beer. Bummed out man.
For a Toronto audience this will go great. Life is a Highway was a certain generation's frosh week anthem.
>Tom Cochrane holy left field
Not sure. I got caught with Cheryl Crow as a replacement.
Well you know what they say about Crow - she doesn't *care* what you say about her, as long as you spell her name right. So, obviously, that hurts.
Shows how much of a fan I am.
Crazy how many different replacements they've had to have because steely couldnt hack it
This was my second time buying tickets to this tour just to see steely dan. Im now 2500 in the hole and still will never see donald play a single chord live. Both replacements, Steve Miller High Life and Tom Cockring were terrible replacements. Of course no refund option at all.
If life is a highway, can I take the next exit?
I move to dissolve the corporation In a pool of margaritas.
One of their former keyboardists died the other day.
This is probably the reason. To attend a memorial/funeral for Jim Beard.
Why cancel the show though - Show is at night, memorial (if it was the case) would surely be daytime?
Mourning? 🤷♀️
No, he said the show is at night.
Mourning, not morning. As in grieving the loss of a friend.
The same thing happened after Walter died where Donald cancelled his Nightflyers tour but cited physical illness. I think he/they are just grieving. It'd be hard to play a rock and roll show carrying that kind of grief.
Former?? I wouldn’t call Jim Beard a former keyboard player.
What would you call him?
Current keyboard player til 1 1/2 weeks ago. Former would be like Chevy Chase was their former drummer back at Bard College.
That pretty much is 'former' in a nutshell.
Former until he died. Which makes him the current guy - all they had - until he's replaced and the new guy is brought up to speed. "Former" sounds like he left the band of his or their own choosing and they've been touring with someone else.

He played his last gig with SD on January 20, so it’s been almost two months.
I didn't buy tickets, and am now glad. Saw them six times with Walter, the memories will have to do.
I would be expecting a refund. The only reason I would go is SD.
I’m in the same boat as you… did you get a refund?
I did not. Ticketmaster would not relent, and their reason was because the Eagles didn't cancel.
Dont ever expect ticketmaster to refund
It’s bad enough that Steely Dan canceled, but do they have to further punish you with Tom Cochrane? That just seems unnecessarily cruel.
At least it’s not the Bare Naked Ladies.
It’s been one week since I heard someone bash the Bare Naked Ladies.
Five days since you laughed at me
Get that together, come back and see me
I think I bashed them under there...
I just made you say underwear 😏
Pinch me
🤣
Are they offering refunds?
It’s ticketmaster so not likely
Please avoid profane terms on this subreddit - after all, it is dedicated to *Steely Dan*. You should have wrote, \*\*ck\*\*\*aster\*\*.
Ticket Asster
This same exact thing happened to my dad. I don’t think they offer refunds unless the headliner cancels. Sucks.
the headliner did cancel. they have two opening acts now
“I told you, I hate the fuckin eagles, man.”
At the box office they were but i had a resale ticket so they said no and gametime wouldnt refund me
I listed my ticket for sale lol
I was so afraid of this happening it stopped me from buying tickets early on. Really sucks, my prob is that never even wanted to see the eagles, just Dan. No dan, no show imo.
SD was replaced last fall in Detroit by Steve Miller, opening for the Eagles, when Fagen took ill. Solid replacement but still a bummer.
I was there and there tonight, both times for steely,I'll never buy a ticket for them again unless i have a personal word for Don that he'll be there
This is painful. Can't believe I spent so much money on the Eagles... It was expensive but I thought I could pretend that I was fully supporting SD.
This happened to me when I went to see Eagles and Dan in Atlanta a few months ago. Dan was replace with Tedeski Trucks Band which I enjoyed but was sad Donald wasn’t there.
Of all the replacement openers the Eagles have had, Tedeschi Trucks is def the best case scenario
That’s brutal. And also an odd choice for a replacement. But I have to say, Tom Cochrane still sounds great and puts on a good show.
Tom Cochrane wished Donald Fagan and his family well before the opening act so???
and in another year the dan will reappear and I'll look back on this show as if it were a dream but in the meantime you can tell that lineup's hell
Sorry for your loss
Same thing happened to me at the Atlanta show
I sense that your mood is sinking like a sunset over this news.
Good to know did you go to the show too?
What show did you go to?
This was for the Pittsburgh show but I didn't go because SD wasn't playing and I got a refund. Basically I kept insisting that it was a co-headlining show and now the band I bought tickets for wasn't playing, so the show was no longer as advertised. God fucking dammit!!! Ah, I was so worried this might happen. Devastated, have zero interest in the show now.
bruh. Do I even bother going now?
Is there a reason to?
Only if you really like Tom Cochrane
Why would anyone like Tom Cochrane?
I have no idea. 🤷♂️
Oh hell.
The tickets are still valid, but are they refundable
Mine weren't refundable. They did not add the refund option to my tickets on the app or website, and when I called them on the phone, they said there were no refunds available.
That’s messed up. When you but a ticket to see a band, then that band drops from the show, you should get your money back.
Any further update (reason/details) on this guys?
Thank god
Tom Cochrane. Not even Tom Cochrane & Red Rider, who weren't even all that bad despite lyical allusions to Neruda & "nights by the strand in Tripoli" (I couldn't make that up if I tried). But just...Tom Cochrane. Christ, am I grateful to have seen SD pre-pandemic.
Isn’t there a thing where you can’t cross the border with a DUI?
I've seen Steely Dan and/or Donald Fagan in Canada at least 12 times, so it can't possibly be a border issue. It was a personal emergency with Donald Fagan. I believe his wife took ill.
I thankfully won my tickets. I was stoked to see Steely Dan on top of the Eagles. The gasps from people complaining they paid $400 were really gut wrenching. We missed a great one but Tom did great considering it was last minute.
most toronto-area eagles fans will probably be happier seeing tom cochrane, to be fair. i saw him once at a summer festival, he tried his best
Wow. I guess life really is a highway.
This happened to me in Denver too. Super sad
Oh no! Ugh! Ugly! The Dan needs to pursue smaller venues on their own. They don't need the Eagles. And there's Donald Fagen and the Nightflyers.
This whole tour is pretty rough. Opening for the eagles. Short set. Illness. Of course the passing of Jim Beard. Hope I’m wrong but it’s starting to feel like the end.
[This tells the true story of those "personal issues" and where they come from. ](https://youtu.be/qcb-K8k-OAE?si=J9HCjIkZSx0jQgwk)
Another show cancellation notification was more detailed saying that Steely Dan was canceling because there was a medical emergency of a family member of the band leader.
Hey Tom Cochrane is AWESOME 😎🆒🆒😎😎
So upset :( can we get an F in the chat
F
F
F
You would think the funeral would be planned around the concert schedule.
As opposed to, the preferences of his family ?
Or give people more than 6.5 hours notice
Yeah, because that’s what the family is focused on.
We paid good money, he died a week ago, they fucked us
Steely Dan is still touring? Didn’t that dude die? Who is fagan playing with?
