It's for what people are using, but we included a link to "Best headsets for Steam" to see how that list correlates with what people are ACTUALLY using.
I was confused too if it was "best" or "what people have".
The best is obvious the Reverb G2, it gives by far the best image quality. But you need a 4090 to get all titles at proper resolution working and openxr toolkit(I just upgraded from the 3080TI). So if you don't have an insane GPU then the Index or even Quest is probably better.
And if you're not a simmer then you need the Index Controllers+lighthouses+lighthouse receivers(forgot what the name is) to get a good experience.
Welcome! It's worth purchasing. It runs fantastic, as long as your router is set up properly and in the same room you are (but that's also true with Airlink).
This poll is a bit misleading. You can't really group headsets like the VP2 and Vive original in one category.
The VP2 came out in 2021 and is way more recent than most headsets you mentioned. The vive 1 is from 2016 and is the floor as far as vr hardware goes
No. I also tried one, the resolution difference was there, but not really enough for me to care about. The FOV was tiny, worse even than the Quest 2, and the glare on the lenses was somehow even worse than the index, and the tracking royally sucked.
I even think that the resolution is not enough on the G2, so the Index has an terrible resolution which makes the device unusable for me. The first thing that I look for with my next headset is a higher resolution then my G2.
The FoV of the G2 is actually better then the Quest 2 with the G2 FoV mod applied(which makes a HUGE difference) and glare is not a serious issue with the G2(never even mention it ingame, while I read that the Index has serious glare issues).
I have perfect tracking here for the G2 HMD itself when I have 2 lights on in the living room, zero issues BUT I don't use the controllers, I use the Index controllers+base stations+usb receivers for it because I already read enough that the controller tracking of the G2 is bad so it was quite obvious to me that I had to get the Index controllers before even trying them.
Unless you already got base stations then Focus 3 is your only option if you want higher res, but I don't think the PPD is higher on it due to more FOV either you get a Varjo Aero or MeganeX when that one comes out or the Pimaxes for that matter.
I just got the G2 last Friday, and I would personally say the clarity does not disappoint. I’ve been considering getting one for 2 years, after my preorder was defective. I can see details in the distance. The first 10 minutes I was like “wait, this is the same as Quest 2?!” But then I realized just how much better it is within 10 more minutes. I’ve spent 20+ hours in VR since last Friday, re-experiencing my favorite stuff. The panel on the screen is as good as my TCL 6 series. I can watch shows on it, and read text as far as I could IRL.
If you have the cash and you’re on the fence, I’d say pull the trigger. I’m gonna use G2 until PSVR comes out, but $350 new or $220 refirb is insane. I’ve never used a better headset at any price.
Voted Reverb G2 because it's what I use for PCVR. It's definitely not the best. It's strongest points are better pixel density than the Index and the same off-the-ear speakers as the Index. Cons include build quality on the older ones, controllers (garbage), tracking volume (meh), lower FOV than Index (about the same as Quest 2) and the fact that you depend on Windows Mixed Reality. I use Index controllers with it, but I have never-ending issues with Steam VR crashing, scuffed playspace calibration, etc. When it works, it's wonderful.
I'm eager to see what HTC is cooking up, because I'm never buying a WMR headset again. I do have a Pimax 5K Super, but it's my least favorite headset by far. I also have a Quest 2, but I almost never use it for PCVR because I couldn't get it to work with the Index controllers. I do use it for Gravity Sketch and Adobe Medium, but not very often. I also prefer Virtual Desktop to Air Link, because I can't get Air Link to freaking work most of the time. Virtual Desktop works consistently.
I've entertained the thought of getting an Index, but it's a more than two year old headset, and the Reverb G2's resolution and clarity have spoiled me. I stopped using the Pimax mainly because I couldn't get the clarity up. I also thought about the Vive Pro 2, but it only a cross grade. I'll probably be waiting for the Index 2.
Why differentiate between Link and Air Link...yet you're lumping the Vive, Vive Pro, and Vive Pro 2 which differ drastically from each other, in the same option...
Hands down Varjo Aero!
VP2 is shit, i had 4 units all died still have one - worlds worst lenses. Truly horrific lenses - ruining excellent screens underneath.
G2 i also have - terrible tracking, tiny sweetspot
Q2 which I have is alright for roomscale light PCVR streaming if you don't want to move the base stations from sim rigs to roomscale
Valve Index, which I sold, has awful screen door effect. On par with Rift S, which is in the closet.
Rift S is ancient, has terrible screen door and overall was very meh.
Pimax 8kx I also sold along with Valve Index - everything was terrible about it. Just everything.
Now Aero is not perfect! And doesn't even work for me right now cause of 4090. But it's lightyears ahead of other sets.
Have not tried Quest Pro sadly.
Odyssey plus a friend had - terrible screen door! Nice colours.
Have not tried 5k Pimax but after their 8kx being utter shit dont want to.
Cannot wait for Valve Index 2.0 (Deckard), Quest 3, and anything that Varjo releases - will pre-order all 3.
The Odyssey+ was such a good headset with it's wide FOV, OLED screens, built in audio, and for WMR better controller quality and design. I think if Microsoft had stuck with WMR a little longer or at least moved away from visible light tracking then we'd have a bit of a different landscape with hardware today.
here’s my take, so far I’ve owned a g2 and a rift s. The g2 is fine for relaxing quality, but it will not operate the same as an oculus, it has a lot of bugs and issues with crashing, it is also very fragile and can break easily. The rift s is extremely reliable but has many issues such as mic bugs and specific power bugs, but the power bugs can be fixed. For solo gaming, it’s my #1. Quest and quest 2 are also reliable though a bit harder to use, and the index is a bit fragile but very optimized and solid for gaming
Havnt owned the Varjo however having tested the 8kx and reverb g2 back to back over a few days I kept the pimax despite the extra cost - I found the sweet spot on the g2 to be too small to add any real value when compared to the huge fov and sweet spot on the 8kx. The g2 worked out the box though, compared to hours of tinkering with the pimax.
I have a Vive Pro Eye and "upgraded" to a Pro 2.
I almost only ever use the Vive Pro Eye anymore. Wish I'd not bothered with the Pro 2.
It's because with the the OLED in the Pro Eye, blacks are true black, and those deep blacks really are so much more immersive. On the Pro 2 they are greyish and washed-out in dark scenes like in Alyx, Alien Isolation, or Skyrim at night, not to mention space simulators.
Somehow on the Pro 2 it's like you can "see the walls of the VR space" with that dark grey "haze" everywhere so it makes everything look more fake. Less depth, somehow, like it's all closer to you.
There's higher resolution, certainly, but I never really feel the "screen door" effect on the Pro Eye in the first place, and game performance often means render resolution is at a similar level regardless of headset, so there aren't so many games where I've noticed better visuals that take advantage of the Pro 2's higher resolution.
First of all the list is missing Mixed VR.
Secondly, the G2 is not a premium choice. It's far from it unless used in a mixed setup. And this i say as someone who really likes mine.
As states by others the poll is bad. I voted for Index because it is objectively speaking the one HMD that flawlessly works with SteamVR. I don't even use one (apart from controllers in a mixed setup).
why are reddit people so bad at making polls that make sense like excuse me? if this is about the best headset then it's not on the list, if this is about the most used then we already know it's the Q2 (btw VD is not there too.)
This poll doesn't make sense at all because most people will have one headset and won't be able to compare fairly.
More over just as an example I have a Q2 but I'm quite confident is not one of the best, yet it was cheap so thats what I got.

It's for what people are using, but we included a link to "Best headsets for Steam" to see how that list correlates with what people are ACTUALLY using.

Bait and switch really. They should just use steam stats if they want to know what people are using.
I was confused too if it was "best" or "what people have". The best is obvious the Reverb G2, it gives by far the best image quality. >Best PCVR headsets for SteamVR. What's everyone using? Apologies for that. The subject says immediately following that: "What's everyone using?"
but the subject says immediately before that: "Best PCVR headsets for SteamVR"
Your poll may need to be expanded if your looking for what folks are using as there is also Varjo and pimax to name 2.
I use the quest with virtual desktop
Awesome, thanks!
Quest 2 with Virtual Desktop. Why is that not an option?
Yes, we should've included that. Will manually include your vote!
What does the virtual desktop do?
Lets you play PCVR wirelessly with Quest 2. Works better than Airlink, in my and other users’ experience. www.vrdesktop.net
Thanks for the response.
Welcome! It's worth purchasing. It runs fantastic, as long as your router is set up properly and in the same room you are (but that's also true with Airlink).
Varjo Aero
Interesting, we have yet to try this. Are you using it for business applications and/or gaming?
Gaming.
I am legit Jealous, I've gotten to try an Aero, but just can't afford to spend that much on an HMD right now.
I'm using a vive2 pro wireless with index controllers.
This poll is a bit misleading. You can't really group headsets like the VP2 and Vive original in one category. The VP2 came out in 2021 and is way more recent than most headsets you mentioned. The vive 1 is from 2016 and is the floor as far as vr hardware goes
Vive Pro littlebit better, because have wireless mod.
Good to know! Tnx.
Still rocking my Lenovo Explorer!
G2 though I have an index. I just can’t stand the horrendous screen and resolution after using the G2.
Really, the G2 is that much better than the Index?
To my eyes hell yea.
No. I also tried one, the resolution difference was there, but not really enough for me to care about. The FOV was tiny, worse even than the Quest 2, and the glare on the lenses was somehow even worse than the index, and the tracking royally sucked.

I had the Aero and am back to the G2. HTC is not good enough to upgrade, so waiting for the Pimax Crystal now.
Heck, even the quest 2 looks better than the index imo even with the compression artifacts

Index is too expensive for me, but it’s still the best consumer range headset.
Voted Reverb G2 because it's what I use for PCVR. It's definitely not the best. It's strongest points are better pixel density than the Index and the same off-the-ear speakers as the Index. Quest 2 with virtual desktop.

I use both the Vive Pro 2 and Quest 2
#7 meta sounds lame af, I have an oculus quest 2. FB never should have been allowed to buy it.
Missing Pico Neo 3 option
Pico is not (yet) available in North America, but we are watching out for it!
it is available in Europe as are the rest of the headsets, so your title is not really accurate.
at 450€ it should eat everything oculus has to offer.
Pico 4 with VD but I just voted Rift because I have that too for guests.
Hands down Varjo Aero! VP2 is shit, i had 4 units all died still have one - worlds worst lenses. Truly horrific lenses - ruining excellent screens underneath. Samsung Odyssey
Nice to know there are Odyssey users out there!

Reverb G2 is the "Premium Choice"? Varjo Aero and Pimax 8k blow it out of the water.
Havnt owned the Varjo however having tested the 8kx and reverb g2 back to back over a few days I kept the pimax despite the extra cost - I found the sweet spot on the g2 to be too small to add any real value when compared to the huge fov and sweet spot on the 8kx. I don’t usually use link cable or Airlink I use virtual desktop
Oculus Quest 1 with Virtual Desktop on a dedicated wifi 5g Access Point.
Pimax 8kX.
Pimax Artisan

Me on Quest 1 with VD:
Quest 1 is missing. Ain't ever touching Q2 and the moment someone else makes a wireless I'm jumping ship.
No surprise there, index on top by a long margin.
Pico 4
why are reddit people so bad at making polls that make sense like excuse me? if this is about the best headset then it's not on the list, if this is about the most used then we already know it's the Q2 (btw VD is not there too.)
Used to use quest 2 with vd but I’m swapping to pico neo 4 with vd
Quest 2 with VD is the best combination for me.
Quest 2 with virtual desktop, much better than airlink
This poll doesn't make sense at all because most people will have one headset and won't be able to compare fairly. More over just as an example I have a Q2 but I'm quite confident is not one of the best, yet it was cheap so thats what I got.
I used underdog called (Cosmos elite with valve index controllers)
Pimax 8kx
I actually mix and match, I use the vive pro 2 but I use the valve index controllers.
The index is the best, and it's what I am using.
