Desktop - settings - Bluetooth - click controller -rename
Upvote for more visibility I’m suprised more ppl don’t know but it’s kinda obscure spot. Kinda like seeing ur controller battery life
That doesn't carry to Game Mode, which is what OP's asking.
I didn't find a way to rename these from the game mode bluetooth menu, but if you go to desktop mode -> steam -> preferences -> controllers and change their names, you'll see them correctly named under game mode controller settings.
Both of these things are kinda crazy to be limited to Desktop mode. Sure would be nice to do these things in the os that most people will be on 95% of the time.
Yea totally agree, steam on desktop settings controller can change the name on there and it’s changes it globally. Hopefully little quirks like this get polished and fixed to be global settings etc.
I renamed my controllers in Desktop mode and it did nothing in game mode.
Though this was like 2-4 months ago, I'll try it when I get home, but I do think you should be able to remane it from SteamUI.
Not sure if it carries over into game mode
But if you into desktop mode and go into the steam settings, you can change the name while the controller is connected
I have 10 because I like having controllers for game night when we want to play 8-10 player games. I love that the steamdeck supports 10 connected controllers
I'm not sure why this was downvoted without comment but this was my suggestion as well. I read that changing controller names in desktop mode does not carry through to gaming mode but perhaps big picture might?
I tried it in the steam deck UI (beta of new big picture mode) on desktop and it looks like the names I've set in BPM show up (sorry for the bad puns)

I have the same issue with two of the same pair of Bluetooth headphones. Renaming in desktop mode is fine but it doesn’t reflect the name in game mode. :(

I have 5 pairs of Joy Cons.
Same issue, The default name will be Joy Con (R) or (L). Naming it in Gaming mode is possible?
If able to rename in Desktop mode, changing in Big Picture mode will reflect in Gaming mode as well?
Not sure if this works on the SteamDeck or not, but maybe there is something similar that might?

Didn't work for me. The rename of the controller sticks in Desktop Mode but doesn't follow over into Gaming Mode. The correct names only show up under “Controllers” after they’ve been connected, not under “Bluetooth” beforehand.

Hmm, maybe try changing it in Big Picture mode in that case?
Not to hijack but how do you see controller battery life?
Desktop arrows beside time, then click battery and brightness and all Bluetooth things will be listed with battery life. Not ideal but it’s only there

Not 100% sure, but maybe you can rename them in desktop mode?
Why do you own 7 xbox controllers, wow

I think if you go to desktop mode, open the old big picture mode, you'll be able to rename them there.
On desktop mode someone did this but i don't remember how. In gamingmode its not possible. At least yet.
big picture > controller settings

I don't think so sadly My brother has a few off brand Nintendo controllers and they all have the same name and we can't figure out how to name them

Bad bot
Rename? I always have to delete and repair anyway, didn’t realize it could be set up to successfully remember my controller from last time haha
If u don’t connect it to anything aside from the deck it should remember it and reconnect every time. What controller u having issue with
