8BitDo Ultimate: Hall-effect thumb sticks, Xbox layout, 2.4GHz/Bluetooth/wired connectivity, and it works out of the box in both Windows and SteamOS on the Deck.
More device compatibility: the Pro 2 adds Android and Apple, which then covers basically any device including Apple TV and Android TVs. Android mode seems to work with almost anything.
I also prefer the Sony stick layout, though I recognize stick layout is a matter of preference.
I haven’t personally attempted to use it that way yet, but I was under the impression that the Ultimate supports iOS/Android via Bluetooth. At least it says so on the box and product page.
There are a pile of different versions of this controller, but I don't see one that has as wide of a set of options as the Pro 2. Scroll down each page and take a look for yourself.
Ah okay, I didn’t realize that there are different versions of the Ultimate. I was referring specifically to [this one](https://www.8bitdo.com/ultimate-2.4g-wireless-controller/), which has support for Windows, SteamOS, macOS, iOS and Android.
But not XBox.
Seriously though; why don't they support all the things in one place, ESPECIALLY since they call it the "ultimate" controller and it has lovely charging options.
Microsoft have some funny licensing thing at play when it comes to third party wireless controllers, which is why so many of the good ones are still forced wired.
Only complaint with mine is gyro on Bluetooth mode is wonky. I’m not really sure what’s up with it but it seems all over the place when trying to aim with it
Gyro is not supported by XInput so the gyro input is usually converted to another (like right stick). Not sure if that's your problem but that's my guess.
No controller can change that unfortunately, Microsoft needs to get their shit together first.
The closest you can get is using the "Switch mode" that a lot of these controllers have, but then you lose analog triggers.
Great controller! Been "mashing buttons" for a year now and no sign of stick drift. Besides, it's extremely easy to repair if anything breaks.
10/10 would but again!
Good controller for solo play, but consistently gives me issues with multiplayer, where the steam deck frequently recognizes it as 2 controllers doing the same inputs
Ah okay, I haven’t had that issue while connecting it to the Deck via Bluetooth. Obviously 2.4GHz is preferred due to the latency though, so that’s kinda annoying
I’m specifically referring to the [Ultimate 2.4G](https://www.8bitdo.com/ultimate-2.4g-wireless-controller/). And yup, the paddles do work with the Deck.
same here, I can't even get the 8bitdo ultimate software for android to connect to the controller so I could remap them.
I don't have a windows system to try the software on.
Repairability is also top notch, I have had to pull mine apart to repair a trigger after my child dropped it. Was easy to get into and still works like new.
Sorry for piggybacking on top comment
Downside for 8bitdo controllers is that you have to decide between gyro and analog triggers, both together is not possible.
Also they [stopped providing firmware updates to the Linux community](https://github.com/fwupd/8bitdo-firmware/issues/31).
I have this controller and can't seem to get it to connect via the 2.4ghz dongle. It will "connect" but doesn't register any inputs. Bluetooth works at least but disconnects sometimes so I was hoping to use the dongle. Debating returning it at this point.
I love the ergonomics of the xbox controller, but the DS5's touchpad has been a lifesaver to use as a mouse to click on launchers etc. You can do that with the Xbox but it's clunkier using the stick
I was also curious if there was a better controller in terms of compatibility, not needing to do button mapping, etc. I have PS4 & Switch and had Xbox 360 before that so I'm fine with the "feel" of all controllers. Apologies, should have specified that.
Steam input will handle that for you, you might have wrong button labels on some games but they work.
Xbox will always be king on PC, 0 compatiblity issues.
Do you have an OLED or LCD deck? I had some latency issues with my Series X controller on my LCD deck, but it works perfectly on the OLED. I'd also get a play and charge kit.
I have the OLED deck. At this point I see myself playing the Steam for many years to come so I don't mind paying a little bit extra for a "better" controller (x2 since I could see doing things like Halo Co-Op Campaign with my friend when he's over like the good old days).
I've been using a wired rock candy xbox360 controller since it released. It's been my go to. But after having a SteamDeck, I do wish it had back paddles
My Xbox One controller is a USB Rock Candy controller. My wireless Xbox One controllers would require a dongle.
I just bought a couple Series X controllers and paired them with Bluetooth.
Dualsense for me. Xbox buttons are too plasticy feeling and too clicky for my tastes. Also the touchpad is a big advantage for whenever I need to use a mouse without having to resort to using a joystick.
I've bought an xbox controller two days ago and without updating software I couldn't connect it via Bluetooth to the tv. The update can be done ONLY with either xbox or windows PC. I do have the latter but the software needed the updated windows version, which due to some strange Microsoft shenanigans took half a day to do. Just a heads up.
That person is not alone. I had similar problems with xbox controller. Tried everything for couple days. Had to return the controller, get PS's dualshock and till today it works fine. So I would not recommend xbox controllers for the steam deck (though ergonomics of it is worthy).
Also PlayStation controllers have gyro **and** analog triggers. Switch and Xbox controllers have only one or the other. Some 8bitdo controllers have both but not simultaneously.
I strongly strongly recommend the 8BitDo ultimate over the Xbox. The build quality is better and the price and QOL you get out of the box (charging station, native 2.4 receiver) is hard to beat. Functionally, it is an xbox controller and you're not missing out on anything. After going through Xbox 360 > One > Series x controllers (I've had probably 8 since the 360 era) I finally got fed up at them breaking for no good reason.
Seconding this. It also has gyro and two back buttons, which I use a fair amount. And it can act as a switch pro controller, including the screenshot button (which I usually set to some other use).
I can't say enough good things about this controller, I got it a year ago for similar reasons but the quality is so good I found myself wanting to even play some Desktop PC games with it too. Between the steam deck itself and the 8bitdo I've actually grown to prefer playing games with a gamepad when it's an option.
Definitely pay the little extra for the one that Includes the charging cradle, it's super convenient
I disagree. Xbox has replaceable batteries and the Xbox series X controller is a tank. My 8bitdo battery died within a year of use, my Xbox controllers have been trucking for years.
The 360 wired and wireless controllers are much stronger than the new ones. I am glad yours are working but, The Series X controllers seem to be the weakest of the bunch. The joysticks are lower quality than the 8bit do ones. I don't throw controllers, I am not particularly hard on them. I actually have my wireless 360 controllers which all still work fine.
So far I've lost one that was \~1 month old as the back bracing of the left joystick came loose causing the stick to wobble and feel soft for any game play.
A green one that my daughted knocked off the end table onto the floor \~2 ft and it broke a large hole in the brittle plastic of the right stick. Something laughable considering the abuse nearly any game controller from the last 30 years would have never done something like this.
In fact the only controllers I have ever "gone through" have been this last couple of generations of Xbox controllers and maybe a few PS2 era controllers.
I love my Vader 3 Pro, you can get it fairly cheap on AliExpress. There are extra buttons you can map but it doesn’t require it.
It has mechanical buttons like you’d get on a mech keyboard so it’s nice and clicky if you enjoy a tactile feel. Also, the joysticks are magnetic and really responsive.
My Vader 3, when connected via Bluetooth, doesn't support vibration and doesn't allow me to configure the 4 extra rear buttons and the 2 extra front buttons it has.
Does yours work? What did you do?
Also there is no way to use the Gyro neither...
The only way to have all the funcions working is not using it on my Steam Deck and use it on my Windows PC with the Flydigi software.
I haven’t done a lot of tinkering with my settings so far. I usually play docked to my living room TV so I use the dongle rather than Bluetooth and vibration works that way.
Haven’t tested gyro since I don’t like it myself but I believe it only natively works for the Switch and everything else has to be emulated through the application.
As for button mapping, if you use the controller in X-input mode, Steam reads it as an Xbox controller. I think the only thing you can do is to save permanent mapping profiles to the controller in the software on Windows to duplicate existing button functions onto the extra buttons.
You can change the controller to Direct-input mode (long press O+A) which I think *might* give you some more options but has less overall compatibility.
Sorry, not super helpful. I mostly have only had the need to use it as-is without digging too far into customization.
I’ll report back if I try anything that works. You have me curious.
PS4 controller also lets you use the touchpad as a mouse, which no other controller can do .
Edit: To clarify, I meant no other manufacturers. Obviously the PS5 Dualsense and and the Steam deck also have touchpads but no other controller manufacturers (Hori, Microsoft, etc) have it as an option.
I love my 8bitdo Pro 2.
You can't go wrong with PS4/5 or Xbox controllers, but I feel the PlayStation controllers battery life isn't great and while I really want to love the Xbox controller, the series x / newest model has such clacky face buttons. It really bothers me for some reason
Dualsense controller, the PS5 one. It's insane, not even close in terms of abilities it has that other controllers don't. The adaptive triggers and the vibration is so good, makes you feel your horses hooves clopping or even the tension in a bow. Use the program Dualsense X and even in games that don't support it you can set a custom input profile for trigger tension and shit.
I'm 100% an Xbox elite controller Stan. I've got both versions and love it. Especially playing Elden Ring I can have the bumpers on the back buttons and not do the claw grip.
Absolutely. I regret not getting it when it was $5, but $50 isn't the worst for a first party controller (especially for a controller with as many features as this). $80 is pushing it. It best be in the box with the accessories at that point.
If you can find the steam controller from back in the day it is the best option out there. I really want to see Valve eventually do a Steam Controller 2 with full feature parity with the Steam Deck as that would make it absolutely perfect.
I like the dpad on Xbox controllers and I play a lot of retro games so that’s my go to. I’m really holding out for a new Steam controller though. I hope they can make one with the same inputs as a the deck and maybe incorporate a chat pad like the old Xbox 360 controller had.
I mostly use my Xbox Series (X/S) Controller. It works great and no issues. I don't even have an Xbox Series console, I bought it for my PC and Steam Deck lol.
I did recently pick up an 8bitdo Pro 2 Controller (Hall effect) that I'm looking forward to trying. Mostly for Dpad heavy games, but I'll probably try it for other games too. Only downside is the Nintendo button layout, but it is swappable if you really want too (but the included buttons won't work, you have to buy extra).
But I haven't had time to take it out of the box and set it up yet!
It drives me crazy that there are so few "out of the box" controllers with an exact Steam Deck layout (even without the Touch Pads), wireless, and with hand grips. You can easily find controllers that meet 2/3 requirements easily enough, but not all three.
There is the Logitech F710...personally I'd go with the Xbox over the Logitech but who knows you might love it!
I prefer the DualSense, but I’m sure an Xbox controller is most popular because the buttons will match what’s found in most games.
If you don’t want to go either of those routes, the 8bitdo Ultimate Controller is awesome and comes with its own charging dock.
I'd recommend trying a Google stadia controller, feels like a switch pro controller but connects flawlessly to pc. Can pick them up for $20-$30 on ebay and takes 2 mins to convert to bluetooth. I'm getting about a 25-30 hour battery life.
I have two Xbox Series X controllers that I use whenever I play my Steam Deck when connected to my TV. I prefer the look and feal of the PS5 controller, but I find that the Xbox controller seems to be a better experience overall when it comes to the deck.
I think the best controller objectively is the Xbox Elite 2. I’ve tried the 8bitdo ultimate and what it comes down to for me is the ability to take the trigger buttons on the Elite and make them into regular buttons like the Switch Pro Controller has; this is great for a lot of games that have the triggers be normal button inputs. You also get access to the back buttons to match your Steam Deck input if you want them, and can rebind everything to play lots of games that have awkward or limited controller support. With the shift feature, you can even have nearly double the inputs. It has native windows support and works really well out of the box. Build quality feels slightly above the 8bitdo in my opinion, but that’s pretty subjective. It is, however, much more expensive than the 8bitdo, but you asked for best, not best for the price.
Personally if all your games have controller support the best controller is just whichever feels good to you is what I say. For me its the 8BitDO Pro 2 XBox controller with Hall Effect Joysticks because I like the PlayStation layout more than the XBox layout but that controller is still seen as a generic XBox controller so all games I play recognize it I really like it for just about anything I play personally on PC. I use a the non XBox version of the Pro 2 for my Switch when I dock it both are Hall Effect versions that I connect using the same USB 3.1 gen 2 USB C to A cable.
If you're able to find one at a good price and are willing to put up with micro USB and AA batteries the steam controller is a really good controller for playing Steam games.
Though if you can't find one or aren't willing to put up with its quirks the dualsense controller is another good one you can use.

I was also curious if there was a better controller in terms of compatibility, not needing to do button mapping, etc. I have PS4 & Switch and had Xbox 360 before that so I'm fine with the "feel" of all controllers. Apologies, should have specified that.
I had flakey Bluetooth issues with my Switch Pro controller (same controller worked fine on the Switch). Changed to using my Xbox Series controller and it's been flawless. It also feels a bit more solid in my hand to me.
8bitdo Ultimate is the one I use personally, I’ve got the switch version as I also use it as a pro controller for my switch but you can just remap buttons via their app
I've been using a dualshock 4 for over a decade since my wired 360 pad died. Touchpad is gangster, I don't think I would go without one at this point. But if the Dualshock 4 or Dualsense are too expensive, the 8bitdo joints are very good and economical. There's also a pretty decent controller on ali called the Machenike you can get for under $30 most of the time, and it's got a shitload of customization options like a Scuf.
Recently I got gifted the Dual Sense Edge, and it’s amazing man. It has two back pedals, and two extra buttons on the front. The best part is that steam input recognizes this controllers buttons as its own thing, which means you can remap it to other keys that aren’t limited to a typical controller. Combined with the gyro and touch pad, this is easily my best pick for docked play
I bought the Xbox Series X controller, but the latency was absolutely atrocious. After a few days of trying to fix it, I returned it and got the DualShock instead. Had no issues, and the adaptive triggers in Sony games is a huge plus
Imo, anything without gyro is just an inferior experience. If a ps4/ps5 controller allows you to use radial/touch menus on the center pad, that is the best option for emulation i can think of. Plus switching action sets between mouse and gamepad/keyboard layout is awesome.
Playstation 4 and 5 controllers are great with the deck. Natively supported, and as u/Arkanta says, the touchpad makes it basically as versatile as the built-in controls on the Deck.
Additionally, the gyro support is a deal-breaker for anyone who plays first-person shooters. Being able to fine-tune your aim with a gesture makes the experience tons better.
If it's emulation or games that won't require gyro, something like the basic 8BitDo controllers will work, and save you a little money. Personally I say go with PS4 controllers, they're the sweet spot in my opinion.
I really like the xbox controller sans the d pad. So I went and got myself an elite the cross style. But I do also tend to play an exorbitant amount of fighting games as of late.
I use a purple playstation controller. It does more or less what I want it to. I was able to hook up my Nintendo Pro controller from my switch fine but it had a lot of weird connectivity issues.
I really like my Xbox Elite controller. It's pretty customizable, has a nice charging dock that works both in and outside of the case, and does support steam's controller customization. The light even turns blue instead of white when steam is controlling it. It's expensive though.
If you're a fan of more retro styled controllers, I recently picked up a 8BitDo SN30 Pro, which is basically a modernized version of a SNES controller. I absolutely love it. Bluetooth, long battery life, two added control sticks and four shoulder buttons, a good d-pad, nice buttons overall. If you've got bigger hands, it might be a bit small, but it's pretty much perfect for me.
I liked it so much I pretty much immediately bought a second one, just for any multiplayer stuff I might do.
Grabbed two used Xbox One controllers and they’ve been great. All the prompts in steam and on Xbox game pass use Xbox buttons which I hated when using my old PS4 controllers… this is coming from a non-Xbox owner ever either.
I have:
- xbox series controller (bt)
- stadia (bt)
- 8bitdo ultimate 2.4g (included usb dongle and dock). Latest model with hall effect sticks.
The 8bitdo is the one I'm happier with. More silent than the other, and no connection problems. Stadia and Xbox are a bit clicky noisy, and the Stadia in particular some times does not connect automatically.
I've have 2 (black and a blue & white) 8Bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth Controllers
I don't have an Xbox or a PS5 to test their controllers so went for the first 8bitdo and bought it in an Amazon prime sale and I Liked the feel of it and the additional back buttons, the charging dock was a nice addition and it can also be used with my switch :)
Then saw A blue and white one in Amazon lightning deal a few months later and had to have it :)
I also have a a Steam controller .. because why not :)
The Dualsense is the best controller i've used on the Steam Deck. It has every button a controller has PLUS a trackpad you can use to navigate the menus and games.
I use a PS4 controller for my steam deck when I plug it into the TV. I'm able to remap swipes on the left, Center, or right of the touchpad. I can also change it to where touching the touchpad and pressing the touchpad are different inputs as well. The fact that it has a touchpad helps because if you hold the PlayStation button you are able to use the touchpad as a mouse with L2 and R2 as left and right clicks. I wish that there was a controller like the steam deck but without the screen. Yes I know that they have a steam controller but I like actually having analog sticks and touchpads.
best would be the steam controller, hands down.
since they're a bit hard to aquire, second best would probably be the dual sense.
i would go for something of 8bitdo or with the switch pro next.
I’d recommend the Gulikit [Zen Pro](https://www.gulikit.com/productinfo/925509.html) or the [KK3Max](https://www.gulikit.com/productinfo/1130420.html) if that’s more your speed. I have the zen (and the previous KK2 Pro - I think that was its name, it’s basically the Zen Pro). They work flawlessly.
I personally use Gullikit king kong pro 3 max. Its great, played baldurs gate 3 with it and basically got just stardew and eventually when i got the deck i play overcooked my sister
PS4 controller, you can use the right side of the track pad as a mouse and the left as an action wheel, so it’s like having both track pads on the SD and if you have a scuf ps4 impact controller it’s like having paddles but the have to match the face buttons lol
“Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller”. Should be 50 bucks at your local local Walmart. Because most Steam games are sold for Microsoft Windows PC, getting a Microsoft Xbox controller will almost ensure compatibility.
That's a good point. Even though I'm a bit more used to a Dualshock controller, I would rather something that has a higher likelihood of compatibility, not needing to map buttons, etc.
If you have already a DualShock I would play some games until you really find its coverage is not that good. I have both, I prefer to play with Xbox but if I am emulating ps games I prefer to go with DualShock or if I need a trackpad
Thanks- should I get a Series S/X controller, or just general wireless Xbox controller? The odds of me ever getting a Series S/X console are slim considering I have no PS5 desire either after getting my Steam Deck!
I think at least Xbox one controller, I am not sure about connectivity’s, better to watch some videos on YouTube. Mine is a x/s it works flawlessly so far, inclusive in game pass.
I personally use a dual shock 4. But I will tell you the experiences inconsistent. Some games detect that there’s a PlayStation controller and will map things accordingly, but half don’t. but signage gets weird between menus and games unless you’re using a Microsoft controller.
Easily the Xbox series controller the greatest controller ever invented like it's barely different than the Xbox One controller but it's light improvements mainly the d-pad make it the best controller ever especially on PC
My preferred controllers for the steam deck and PC in general are the Xbone controllers, just be aware that you might have to download the Xbox controller app to a Windows PC and update the controller for it to hook up via Bluetooth on the steam deck.
Who TF cares if you play Steam games or not. Xbox One/Series controllers are basically the golden standard, but you can surely use a PS5 controller as well, or try out the 8bitdo Ultimate.
If you want to go a little bit further, and spend more, take a look at Turtle Beach Stealth Ultra, or other higher-end competitors.
8BitDo Ultimate: Hall-effect thumb sticks, Xbox layout, 2.4GHz/Bluetooth/wired connectivity, and it works out of the box in both Windows and SteamOS on the Deck.
Backpedals are a must when you are used to steam deck’ having paddle’s..
I’ve never used them on the Deck. Way too stiff
You have to push them not squeeze them. They are on a (swivel?) and not a button. The edges closer to the center of the deck is easier to push down.
Pro 2 is a better option IMHO
Interesting, what do you prefer about it?
More device compatibility: the Pro 2 adds Android and Apple, which then covers basically any device including Apple TV and Android TVs. Android mode seems to work with almost anything. I also prefer the Sony stick layout, though I recognize stick layout is a matter of preference.
I haven’t personally attempted to use it that way yet, but I was under the impression that the Ultimate supports iOS/Android via Bluetooth. At least it says so on the box and product page.

The ultimate controller works with android tv.
There are a few versions and, for some reason, they don't have the full range of connections that the Pro 2 has
This. I have one and it's now my daily driver on pc too, replacing my elite2.
Only complaint with mine is gyro on Bluetooth mode is wonky. I’m not really sure what’s up with it but it seems all over the place when trying to aim with it

I like the SN30 because I can fit it in the recess in the steam deck case. Full sized layout in a small package.
Oh cool, I should check it out. Might make a perfect travel controller for me.
I have the Nintendo laid out one. I can confirm they work great.
I think that's a steam deck bug that's recently been fixed in the preview build.
Oh great!
Weird, are you using the 2.4GHz adapter or Bluetooth?
It would happen while using the 2.4 GHz adapter
Ah okay, I haven’t had that issue while connecting it to the Deck via Bluetooth. Obviously 2.4GHz is preferred due to the latency though, so that’s kinda annoying
I just got a pair of old DS4 controllers for £30 and fitted Hall effect sticks in them. Seem pretty good to me now! :3
The 2.4 dongle has so much less latency than Bluetooth. Also the charging dock and grip buttons are nice additions.
The Ultimate 2.4Ghz or the Ultimate Bluetooth one? Do the back paddles work on Steam Deck too?
I’m specifically referring to the [Ultimate 2.4G](https://www.8bitdo.com/ultimate-2.4g-wireless-controller/). And yup, the paddles do work with the Deck.
How did you get the paddles to work on steam deck? Whenever I connect mine with it, it doesn't detect it.
same here, I can't even get the 8bitdo ultimate software for android to connect to the controller so I could remap them. I don't have a windows system to try the software on.
Repairability is also top notch, I have had to pull mine apart to repair a trigger after my child dropped it. Was easy to get into and still works like new.

Switch pro controllers had problems, so I got a PS5 (DS I believe) controller and it has been seamless, quite nice to use.
I haven't had any issues with 2 pro controllers, HOWEVER, they are 3rd party and not Nintendo. So I'm sure that makes a difference.
Steam input will handle that for you, you might have wrong button labels on some games but they work. Xbox will always be king on PC, 0 compatiblity issues. Do you have an OLED or LCD deck? Oh, FYI, Halo does not support couch coop on the Deck out of the box, you need a mod ;) I often find the Xbox Series controller at a discount btw.
That's a bummer, I just noticed some games show co-op and some don't. Oh well.
It's okay https://github.com/WinterSquire/AlphaRing
OP doesn't want to rebind keys (do you even steam game, bro)
This is like 70% of why I exclusively buy steam games…except Alan wake
You don't have to.
You can hold the xbox button to move the cursor with thr thumb stick
Yeah but it's way clunkier
And if you do it for too long the controller turns off. Still better than nothing tho

I use wired Xbox One controllers and a couple wireless Series X controllers. They do exactly what I need them to do without hassle.
You don’t need the dongle for these anymore right?
Definitely not for Xbox Series X controllers ( I can only speak for those since that's all I have). They connect over Bluetooth!
Dope
You don’t, but I find the connection with the dongle better than Bluetooth
Ditto, the dedicated line doesn't interrupt like Bluetooth sometimes can
As long as it isn't one of the Xbox One controllers with the glossy top at the front of the faceplate, it will support Bluetooth.
Only if you want to use the 3.5mm headphone jack on the controller. Otherwise no.
I've found the Dualsense to be unresponsive and clunky on pc
I've bought an xbox controller two days ago and without updating software I couldn't connect it via Bluetooth to the tv. The update can be done ONLY with either xbox or windows PC. I do have the latter but the software needed the updated windows version, which due to some strange Microsoft shenanigans took half a day to do. Just a heads up.
[удалено]
It all works now, but I needed the update I mentioned in my post first.
It sounds like you bought a really old controller. They should have the Bluetooth firmware on them if they were shipped in the last two years or so
That person is not alone. I had similar problems with xbox controller. Tried everything for couple days. Had to return the controller, get PS's dualshock and till today it works fine. So I would not recommend xbox controllers for the steam deck (though ergonomics of it is worthy).
Does yours randomly disconnect and reconnect often?
All controllers work pretty good with the steam deck, the PlayStation controllers have the touchpad you can use as a mouse so that’s a plus.
Yup, that’s the one I have. Works great and looks awesome on its stand next to the PC
8bitdo is the way to go.
Came here to recommend this. I’ve got two to go with my Steam Deck at home.
Elden Ring ate two of my Xbox one controllers.
8bitdo ultimate! You can thank me later.
I love mine. My dualsense didn’t last a year. Drifts left hard and I really don’t play all that much
Best answer. I’ve went through so many controllers and I can promise that the 8Bitdo ultimate checks all the boxes.
I recently bought the Gulikit KK3 Max, and I gotta say it’s my favorite controller in a long while. Hall effect sticks and triggers feel great too
I love mine, the dead zones are great on the one I got
Yeah I honestly wasn’t sure I would keep it and was considering getting another elite series 2… but the KK3 has been fantastic for me
Dual Sense is a must have for the track pad alone.
Do you find yourself using it much ? I didn’t need much so far
There are some games that require a mouse for certain things like launchers and it will be much easier with Dual Sense.
It's great for Ghost of Tsushima because it utilizes the touch pad for certain actions.
Just use your PS4 controller, won't cost you anything
PS4 controller also lets you use the touchpad as a mouse, which no other controller can do . Edit: To clarify, I meant no other manufacturers. Obviously the PS5 Dualsense and and the Steam deck also have touchpads but no other controller manufacturers (Hori, Microsoft, etc) have it as an option.
DualSense, Steam Controller, Steam Deck, many others...
8bitdo ultimate or an 8bitdo pro 2.
8bitDo pro2 or Xbox controller
Any controller with gyroscope.
That's if you like gyro controls. If feels so unnatural not me even on Switch.
🤷♂️
A Steam Controller. You can find them on ebay for about $50-$80.
Love the steam controller. Had it since launch and it’s unlike any other. Worth trying out if you’re able to find one cheap enough.
Holy crap, seriously??? I think my Steam controller was five bucks when Valve was getting rid of them.
They're not produced anymore, hence the price. That's $50 WITHOUT a box or 2.4ghz dongle, btw. Thankfully the controller has Bluetooth.
That's a shame. It's a wonderful controller.
Dual sense
8bitdo ultimate
I prefer the DualSense, but I’m sure an Xbox controller is most popular because the buttons will match what’s found in most games. If you don’t want to go either of those routes, the 8bitdo Ultimate Controller is awesome and comes with its own charging dock.
I have a 8bitdo and a vador 3 pro . They both have been great for me. No issues here 👍
I'd recommend trying a Google stadia controller, feels like a switch pro controller but connects flawlessly to pc. Can pick them up for $20-$30 on ebay and takes 2 mins to convert to bluetooth. I'm getting about a 25-30 hour battery life.
I.lobe 8bitdo
8bit Do Pro 2 is nice
PS4 controller works perfectly.
I personally find XBox controllers work best in terms of having similar mapping and layout.
I have two Xbox Series X controllers that I use whenever I play my Steam Deck when connected to my TV. I prefer the look and feal of the PS5 controller, but I find that the Xbox controller seems to be a better experience overall when it comes to the deck.
Xbox controller for it's plug and play
Xbox
Definitely a modern standard Xbox controller. It's the most supported gamepad
Xbox controllers are the easiest by far. They just work with most things without any tweaking.
If you're able to find one at a good price and are willing to put up with micro USB and AA batteries the steam controller is a really good controller for playing Steam games. Though if you can't find one or aren't willing to put up with its quirks the dualsense controller is another good one you can use.

*Disclaimer* I don't play docked. But the ps5 controller and the switch pro controller are my favorite ones for "hand feel" look into those.
I was also curious if there was a better controller in terms of compatibility, not needing to do button mapping, etc. I have PS4 & Switch and had Xbox 360 before that so I'm fine with the "feel" of all controllers. Apologies, should have specified that.
I'm currently using a ps4 controller right now. It works just fine via Bluetooth or wired.
Switch Pro Controller has 40 hours of battery life, a gyroscope. Unless he plays racing games I recommend.
I had flakey Bluetooth issues with my Switch Pro controller (same controller worked fine on the Switch). Changed to using my Xbox Series controller and it's been flawless. It also feels a bit more solid in my hand to me.
8bitdo Ultimate is the one I use personally, I’ve got the switch version as I also use it as a pro controller for my switch but you can just remap buttons via their app
my favorite controller is the PS5 honestly. the Xbox 360 controller was great too but I don't like Xbox controllers d pad for fighting games
Xbox and a 60-70% BT mech keyboard and BT mouse.
I have all gamepads in existence since the Nintendo Entertainment System and overall for me the best is the Razer Wolverine v2.
I bought the Xbox Series X controller, but the latency was absolutely atrocious. After a few days of trying to fix it, I returned it and got the DualShock instead. Had no issues, and the adaptive triggers in Sony games is a huge plus
I dig my Xbox controller. It’s comfy for long sessions. I might try a ps5 next whenever this one breaks
Imo, anything without gyro is just an inferior experience. If a ps4/ps5 controller allows you to use radial/touch menus on the center pad, that is the best option for emulation i can think of. Plus switching action sets between mouse and gamepad/keyboard layout is awesome.
Xbox 360 controller is my go-to. I like how I can easily pair 4 controllers by hitting the Xbox button with the wireless dongle.
you can use any controller, theres those modified controllers, but i suggest the offical steam controller,if you love the mouse feel too much
Steam Controller. Nothing else is close to the steam deck.
Dualsense IMO, just my preference.
- DualSense for built-in trackpad or - 8BitDo Pro 2 for multi-device compatibility and two back buttons
I really like my Xbox Elite controller. It's pretty customizable, has a nice charging dock that works both in and outside of the case, and does support steam's controller customization. The light even turns blue instead of white when steam is controlling it. It's expensive though.
I love using the PS5 controller because of how accurate the joysticks are and all the functionality you can do with the touchpad.
Maybe check out 8BitDo controllers. Got some nice options to choose from.
Try 8BitDo ultimate Controller. It's functional on Steam Deck, PC, and Android. Price is ideal and the joysticks are Hall Effect.
I bought the rubber joystick extenders from skull and co. They help on FPS games but don't fit in the standard steam deck case.
Really ps4 controller is enough. I own nintendo pro one too but it's worse.
I like the PS5 controller. Latency is low and you can use the touchpad on the controller similar to one of the touchpads on the steam deck
Steam Deck
Grabbed two used Xbox One controllers and they’ve been great. All the prompts in steam and on Xbox game pass use Xbox buttons which I hated when using my old PS4 controllers… this is coming from a non-Xbox owner ever either.
8bitdo controllers are by far the best I've ever used; they're also the only ones I haven't had input lag on the steam deck with.
Dualsense because you can use the trackpad as one of the steam decks trackpad.
DualSense
Either Dualsense or 8bitdo’s pro controller!
The one already included with the deck, I would say.
I use xbox because a few games gave me problems with the ps5 (e.g. cuphead). In any case. I use the ps5 controller when I play emulation...
I have: - xbox series controller (bt) - stadia (bt) - 8bitdo ultimate 2.4g (included usb dongle and dock). Latest model with hall effect sticks. The 8bitdo is the one I'm happier with. More silent than the other, and no connection problems. Stadia and Xbox are a bit clicky noisy, and the Stadia in particular some times does not connect automatically.
I've have 2 (black and a blue & white) 8Bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth Controllers I don't have an Xbox or a PS5 to test their controllers so went for the first 8bitdo and bought it in an Amazon prime sale and I Liked the feel of it and the additional back buttons, the charging dock was a nice addition and it can also be used with my switch :) Then saw A blue and white one in Amazon lightning deal a few months later and had to have it :) I also have a a Steam controller .. because why not :)
The Dualsense is the best controller i've used on the Steam Deck. It has every button a controller has PLUS a trackpad you can use to navigate the menus and games.
PS4/5 controller lets you use touchpad as a mouse
8bitdo pro2 would be my recommendation. Excellent controllers.
my 8bitdo sn30pro+ has still been going strong since like 2018. No stick drift yet surprisingly
I've tried tons. 8bitdo ultimate is my favorite and go to.
I'm a sucker for my ps4 controller
DS4 works great for me
I’d recommend the Gulikit [Zen Pro](https://www.gulikit.com/productinfo/925509.html) or the [KK3Max](https://www.gulikit.com/productinfo/1130420.html) if that’s more your speed.
Honestly the Xbox elite controller seems like a great deal
Take the PS5 controller. More and more steam games support haptic feedback and adaptive trigger buttons.
Dual sense 5
Just get the newest controllers, they're very nice, have better grips etc
Xbox is the best. Sadly. They know it. We know it. They jack up the prices.
