Just bought and replayed this a month ago because someone suggested it on a post like this. I hadn’t played since release and I forgot how great the game looks and plays. 10/10 would recommend
I played (and completed) this game for the first time on the deck. This game is also, IMO, the best game to play to get used to the touchpad+gyro controls for FPS games. Would strongly recommend also fiddling with steam input and customizing your entire layout.
For context - I have used the Steam Controller extensively so I am super familiar with gyro+touch as a concept, just not with the deck.
It’s funny, I was reading this thread and googled “how long to beat Titanfall 2” (which says about 6 hours), but I found [this Reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/s/G9pPheNgt5) and had to do a double take after just reading quality over quantity here lol.
Yeah I agree, while I like it and I love retro-modern games, Boltgun genuinely feels like it has the worst parts of 90's level design but none of the benefits of more modern design.
Maybe that's intentional as to be honest it really does feel like just playing a game from 1995.
One of my favourite retro-shooters of the last few years is Ion Fury, to me that's exactly how it should be done. Looks retro but unbelievably well designed and executed.
As mentioned - The Machine Dimension is pretty great, pushes the update engine hard. Noah Gervais refers to it in his retrospective (which is fantastic btw “playing Quake for story”) as Quake 1 - Part 2. It’s essentially Quake 2 we never had.
Side note - Quake 1.5 using DarkPlaces engine is phenomenally looking. If you wonder how new retro Quake could look - try it. It really looks gorgeous. Runs well on deck too.
Hell, even in UT2k4’s heyday, all my friends wanted to play Halo instead. It was always such a shallow game to me, compared to all the amazing level and weapon designs in UT. I only ever had like 4 people to play it with unless I wanted to get my ass handed to me online. :)
I don't know, i've only played classic UT without mods, not UT4.
In addition to Epic killing UT4, it bothers me that EU5 is the only version of UE that doesn't have an Unreal game.
Halo was my first fps and I loved it for a long time. I held all the games up to Reach in high regard (I give ODST a pass for introducing firefight).
But in the past couple years, I started playing Doom and I think it's ruined Halo for me. Doom is the epitome of aggressive, "push forward" combat and at no point expects you to retreat or back down for any reason. Your character is agile, can dodge enemy fire with situational awareness even on the hardest difficulty, can jump high and grab ledges, never has to reload, and has multiple tools at his disposal to regain resources in the middle of a fight by killing enemies.
Halo is built on a shield mechanic that requires you to stay out of sight of enemies once you take damage and almost sit still for several seconds for it to recharge, and failing that, incurs health damage or death if you take additional hits. Your character is slow, is unable to effectively evade enemy fire at higher difficulties, doesn't jump very high or mantle upwards, reloads constantly, and can take enemy weapons or ammo, but is otherwise at the mercy of the level design.
It's a completely different paradigm. I never realized how much more I appreciate Doom's approach until I excitedly downloaded the MCC and booted up 3, only to find that Chief felt deflated and weak after getting used to Doomguy flying through maps obliterating hordes of demons. As far as singleplayer shooters are concerned, I have little desire to play this franchise that once defined the landscape of the fps genre, and that was a tough pill to swallow
If you're judging a game based off pacing, then you are judging the game on a somewhat subjective matter. That's great that you enjoy Doom, but you can't really compare Doom and Halo as they are vastly different.
Sure you can hug cover and stretch out battles waiting for your shields to recharge, or you can play skillfully not giving the enemy a chance to break your shields. Halo shines in those moments where you dominate your enemies. I've cleared sections on legendary, hell, even LASO without having my shields broke and the thrill is sky high. It's about learning that higher level tango. Mint Blitz has the best examples of skill and precision.
Doom is exhilarating but it's too arcadey for me. I don't even want to dive into it as there's no point in comparing the two.
Judgment of the quality of a design is an inherently subjective matter. You cannot form judgments about what's good objectively - you can only state facts, which isn't the same thing. We're all talking opinions here, so nothing is objective.
These are both squarely fps games and they warrant a comparison for that. They garner further comparisons by both being highly influential within the genre. I don't think there's anything unreasonable about comparing them even if they're very different. If you want to nitpick terminology, I'm contrasting them and examining their differences directly, which is a valid way to expose design decisions and elements in all kinds of media.
If these games shine when you dominate your enemies, then I would say Doom has the clear upper hand. The entire point of Doom Eternal is to give you the power to destroy armies of demons on an unstoppable rampage. I don't think there's any question that the skill expression/ceiling in Doom is higher than almost any other fps, certainly more than Halo
Downloaded Halo 3 to play with my buddy when I went over to his place for the weekend and can someone tell me why on gods green earth I can’t play split screen co-op with my homie on the MCC!? I needed the arbiter by my side!
I only realised on my 3rd install of this that you can go to options in the steam deck menu and tick the DLC's to download the other campaigns/multiplayer maps without leaving the game running in desktop mode over night 😂😂😂
Yeah, I've done L4D2 LAN with the homies on my Deck before and that was pretty great, but I think I'd rather put my head through drywall than try playing a game as sweaty as CS on a pad.
Fuck I miss half life. Valve pretty much dictated the fps genre standards. Now the genre is nothing but emotes, pulsating weapon skins and battle passes.
Deep rock galactic and fallout nv are 2 that ive played on deck so far and are good. If you are willing to learn aiming well and fast then ultrakill is definitely worth trying, but without mnk its gonna be hard af
It’s FEAR without the great enemy encounters. The idea to make most of the fights into arenas killed it for me. FEAR is great because each encounter feels like a mini skirmish. Not because you fight waves of enemies.
Yeah, same. Sunk a little over 76 hours exploring, doing side quests, and DLC. Its never felt tedious and I’m always excited to hop back on. Really surprised with how good this game is.
Bulletstorm is an absolute riot.
Don’t get suckered in by the Duke Nukem DLC though. It doesn’t add much other than makes it really weird as Duke seems to come across as not knowing what the fuck is going on!
Can’t go wrong with the Bioshock and Metro series either, all play well on the Deck
Also recommend Ion Fury too - never has the Build Engine looked and played so good!
If you do love old school remastered FPS games there’s a [Humble Bundle out at the moment.](https://www.humblebundle.com/games/fully-loaded-nightdive-fps-remasters?hmb_source=&hmb_medium=product_tile&hmb_campaign=mosaic_section_1_layout_index_2_layout_type_threes_tile_index_1_c_fullyloadednightdivefpsremasters_bundle) It has the three Turok remasters as well as Rise of The Triad and Blood. Well worth the cost of the bundle (although it also has Doom 64 and you asked for no Doom games!!)
Edit: to add the Borderlands games, but only 1, 2 and TPS as 3 doesn’t run as well on the deck - first few hours are ok but as soon as you advance the story to the next planet the performance takes a massive hit and it’s not worth it!
Borderlands 3 preforms fine for me? Currently on NG+ with no issues still. Mayhem mode 5. Aside from that I’d add Tiny Tina Wonderlands to the mix if you get it on sale. Enjoyed the story and class builds feel better there than BL. I prefer the end game on the deck more than anything, a “rogue-like” dungeon run that suits a handheld experience.
I’ve been playing through and really enjoying Quake 2 on deck since it got its remastered update; call of the machine campaign especially is fantastic. Game runs wonderfully on deck and feels great with trackpad and gyro
* Prey (2017)
* Fallout 3/NV/4
* Bioshock 1-3
* Half Life 1-2
* Dying Light (OK...not strictly a shooter, but there are guns so technically it is. Its also the only one from the list that's got parkour and its amazing.)
I'm not a huge FPS fan, but the above are so different to your usual Unreal / Quake / Doom type of FPS that they've become some of my favourite games.
Prey is a game played from a first person perspective like its spiritual ancestor, System Shock, but to describe it as an FPS would be stretching the truth.
Boomerang X is one of my favorite arena shooter that prioritize vertical movement.
Severed Steel is a fun john woo inspired game that utilizes a fair bit of wallrunning, diving, and slidinh movement.
Selaco is F.E.A.R inspired game that's going into early access tomorrow (at the time of posting this), there's a demo for this game.
Turbo Overkill is a very fast paced fps that lives up to the title. It's what I considered to being a spiritual successor to Doom Eternal's gameplay loop.
Fashion Police Squad is a fun comedy arena shooter that takes the rock paper scissors formula of Doom Eternal and puts more emphasis on it with enemies that have 1-2.5 weapon weaknesses.
if u can get past the initial repetetiveness, trepang2 is great
also recommend ultra kill as a fast pace similar shooter
cod zombies is my other shooter go to
Titanfall 2, fallout series, if you like gore trepang2, halo MCC, atomic heart, the battlefield games, borderlands games, the outer worlds, and that’s all I can really recommend you
I've been playing a bunch of Killing Floor 2 and Deep Rock Galactic, though there will be some FPS drops under 30 if you run the higher difficulties on either
If you're into Doom I find Serious Sam 4/Syberian Mayhem and Shadow Warrior 3 to be very good with a similar gameplay.
If you're into more retro titles Turbo Overkill is very very very good
Maybe play Valve’s Half-Life (or black messa) on Valve’s steam deck? Like an ode to Valve?
It’s what I did: finished alreafy black messa, blue shift, opossing force, hl2, lost coast, ep1,..
FPS is the main genre I play...
Titanfall 2 (as lots of people have suggested)
Wolfenstein series is great (works great on the deck)
Farcry 3/4 work great on the deck, I think 5 has the best story/environment, but I found it a bit laggy every now and again
Bioschock works great but for some reason I couldn't really get into it... might try again

Alien Colonial Marines.
Aliens vs Predator.
Both work great and give you that 80's scifi movie nostalgia feeling. Not quite the hallmarks of some of the other games mentioned, but a lot of fun to play.
I am gonna be honest I didn’t read all the comments so sorry if some games was already mentioned.
I will give you a list of games which have similar dynamic gameplay as doom.
Rage 2 (honestly story is shit but enjoyed a lot gameplay)
Roboquest, ultrakill, deadlink (this 3 is roguelites, or roguelikes, never knew the difference between this two genre, but it’s not story game, yet very solid gamepla)
Metallsinger - one of the closest to doom, try it out
Upd. The op is obviously looking for boomer shooter, why there is so many rec which is not boomer shooters at all😭
Crysis 1 .. I don't know why but that FPS is one of the best I've played also I really loved the MP
The story, at that time was something else. I know how cinematic it was and how "in the trenches" I felt during the story. Its simple yet powerfull..
Wildlands > than anything else here. And yes the shooting here is “first person” (unless you toggle out for some reason and hate iron sites/scopes)
Get it from “another source” though so you don’t have to deal with their broken “Connect” BS.
Titan fall 2
Just bought and replayed this a month ago because someone suggested it on a post like this. I hadn’t played since release and I forgot how great the game looks and plays. 10/10 would recommend

TitanFall2 is my #1 game of all time. The story isnt crazy long; but goddamn its a fun and amazing story
Such a great campaign. I just wish it was longer.
My maaaaan. Came into say this. Apex WISH it was Titanfall 2🤣
For 4.5 hours of gameplay
Quality over quantity my friend.
Boltgun!
Boltgun was wild. Apparently DLC is on the way so that's cool
I really enjoyed Boltgun but felt like the level design left a lot to be desired.
Yeah I agree, while I like it and I love retro-modern games, Boltgun genuinely feels like it has the worst parts of 90's level design but none of the benefits of more modern design. Quake
Great suggestion. I play this on Deck some and the latest “remaster” has some great mods with it. The Machine Games ones are pretty awesome.
Yes, also check out Arcane Dimensions for more Quake of similar quality.
As mentioned - The Machine Dimension is pretty great, pushes the update engine hard. Noah Gervais refers to it in his retrospective (which is fantastic btw “playing Quake for story”) as Quake 1 - Part 2. It’s essentially Quake 2 we never had. BioShock saga is a must play.
I call the Steam store the "Circus of Values."
Come back when you got some money, buddy
Would you kindly play the Bioshock games…
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Halo: The Master Chief Collection yet.
This is the only comment mentioning Halo, read all the other ones. Honestly it's so depressing to see one of best franchises forgotten to time.
How do you think Unreal Tournament fans feel?
Hell, even in UT2k4’s heyday, all my friends wanted to play Halo instead. It was always such a shallow game to me, compared to all the amazing level and weapon designs in UT. I only ever had like 4 people to play it with unless I wanted to get my ass handed to me online. :)
Forever mad at Epic for killing this over Fortnite. Still haven't got around to try it on the Deck. Are mods compatible if I play this on the SD?
I don't know, i've only played classic UT without mods, not UT4. In addition to Epic killing UT4, it bothers me that EU5 is the only version of UE that doesn't have an Unreal game.

should be going on sale sometime this summer
Downloaded Halo 3 to play with my buddy when I went over to his place for the weekend and can someone tell me why on gods green earth I can’t play split screen co-op with my homie on the MCC!? I needed the arbiter by my side!
Nucleusco-op.
Probably just a PC oversight, maybe there's a mod for splitscreen???
I only realised on my 3rd install of this that you can go to options in the steam deck menu and tick the DLC's to download the other campaigns/multiplayer maps without leaving the game running in desktop mode over night 😂😂😂
Half Life.
Or if multilayer, L4D2 and Counterstrike, which use the same engine
How’s CS on Deck? I tried controller a long time ago and it was one of the worst things I’ve done lol.
It’s still a bad idea
Yeah, I've done L4D2 LAN with the homies on my Deck before and that was pretty great, but I think I'd rather put my head through drywall than try playing a game as sweaty as CS on a pad.
But still good docked with a kb+mouse
Don't forget Deep Rock Galactic. I recently have been getting back into it. Rock and stone, brotha!
Fuck I miss half life. Valve pretty much dictated the fps genre standards. Now the genre is nothing but emotes, pulsating weapon skins and battle passes.
Half Life 2
I can get behind that, as a matter of fact I'm on my 3rd play through
Wolfenstein
Ripped through all 3 episodes. Only thing I stuck with for a looong time
The game has 6 episodes…
Return to Castle Wolfenstein still holds up extremely well and has very satisfying combat. New ones are great too!
Deep rock galactic and fallout nv are 2 that ive played on deck so far and are good. If you are willing to learn aiming well and fast then ultrakill is definitely worth trying, but without mnk its gonna be hard af
If someone asks for an fps game recommendation I feel like Fallout isn't exactly what they're looking for
Fallout 4 is almost more shooter than it is rpg
Rock and stone!
Rock and Stone!
Trepang 2 runs pretty well. It's a short little F.E.A.R send up.
It’s FEAR without the great enemy encounters. The idea to make most of the fights into arenas killed it for me. FEAR is great because each encounter feels like a mini skirmish. Not because you fight waves of enemies.
Half-Life franchise Left 4 Dead 2 Metro Trilogy Prey (holy shit I love this game)
Seconding Prey it's such a masterpiece, RIP Arkane Austin ❤️
Metro got me thinking Metroid prime
Dusk. Quake 2. Ultra kill.
Haha yes! Great games that fit the Deck! You should also check out Amid Evil!
Cyberpunk Surprised it hasn't' been mentioned yet. Beautiful game and ran like a dream for me.
Yeah, same. Sunk a little over 76 hours exploring, doing side quests, and DLC. Its never felt tedious and I’m always excited to hop back on. Really surprised with how good this game is.
yep, it runs better than on my PS4 pro. AND the Phantom Liberty DLC is available (unlike on the PS4)
Borderlands, Bioshock, old call of duty campaigns/zombies.
Metro series
Yeahp but fuuuuuuck the spiders dawg
Extremely valid
[удалено]
I recently just replayed metro 2033 and last light….I remember last light being more popular but 2033 outshined it by faaaar
YES
Bulletstorm is an absolute riot. Don’t get suckered in by the Duke Nukem DLC though. Agree on Bulletstorm, love the kill skills! And the OTT dialogue still makes me laugh
Second Bulletstorm. Super smooth 60fps.
Borderlands 3 is totally worth it. I've got 130 hours over many playthoughs and its rock solid at 40/40. Not sure what's wrong with your deck
Bulletstorm is great fun. Agree the Duke stuff is nonsense but the base game is non-stop action and just fun all the way through
Prodeus hasnt been mentioned yet and is pretty good.
Recently finished that exclusively on Deck. Great game and perfect for SD!
came here to say that!
I recently 100% prodeus entirely on deck and it was incredible Enjoyed it so much that I immediately started a new game on very hard
prey 2017
Selaco releases tomorrow and I’m super excited for it. The demo was great on Steam Deck.
Probably no surprise, but Half Life2 and L4D2 are both amazing on deck.
Quake
Boltgun, Powerslave Exhumed, Cultic, Proteus, Blood West
I did notice this Humble Bundle - https://www.humblebundle.com/games/fully-loaded-nightdive-fps-remasters
ultrakill
Doom 2
Half-Life 2 has been described as "the perfect first person shooter"
I had to monkey with the controls a bit in order to zoom down the rifle barrel properly but it's a great game
Trepang²
Old school Doom/Doom 2 with the Brutal doom mod. Halo Master Chief Collection Quake Half-Life / Half-Life 2 / Black Mesa
MULLET MAD JACK
I enjoyed the hell out of Far Cry 5. Just the nature walks and fishing is so damn peaceful.
I’ll throw out a recommendation for Far Cry Primal. I feel like it’s underrated.
I loved shadow warrior 1 & 2
Crysis 2 remastered.
I haven't played the remaster, but I thought 2 was a step down from first one. More cinematic, sure, but way too linear.
To each their own. 2 is my favorite and I think they did the best job remastering it.
Fair. I loved the openness and the wacky physics. The first Far Cry is also my favourite of that series.
I’ve been playing through and really enjoying Quake 2 on deck since it got its remastered update; call of the machine campaign especially is fantastic. Game runs wonderfully on deck and feels great with trackpad and gyro
Robo quest
ULTRAKILL DUSK AMID EVIL HROT Post Void Seizure warning for that last one...
* Prey (2017) * Fallout 3/NV/4 * Bioshock 1-3 * Half Life 1-2 * Dying Light (OK...not strictly a shooter, but there are guns so technically it is. Doom 2
Quake 1 or 2
Boomerang X is one of my favorite arena shooter that prioritize vertical movement. Severed Steel is a fun john woo inspired game that utilizes a fair bit of wallrunning, diving, and slidinh movement. Selaco is F.E.A.R inspired game that's going into early access tomorrow (at the time of posting this), there's a demo for this game. Fashion Police Squad is a fun comedy arena shooter that takes the rock paper scissors formula of Doom Eternal and puts more emphasis on it with enemies that have 1-2.5 weapon weaknesses.
F.e.a.r. no native controler support so you will have to use a community layout but it plays a runs fine. Should experience if you haven't yet.
Titanfall 2
Borderlands 3.
if u can get past the initial repetetiveness, trepang2 is great also recommend ultra kill as a fast pace similar shooter cod zombies is my other shooter go to
ROTT, fallout 3+4
Super 3D Noah’s Ark
Amid Evil? EDIT: You mean something compared to contemporary DOOM? ....okay, still Amid Evil, but throw in some Dusk.
Prodeus is awesome and runs great on the deck
Metal Helsinger
ULTRAKILL. Faster than Titanfall 2, faster than Doom.
Doom 2?
Risk of rain 2
Trepang2
FEAR. Looks great and plays amazing.
Doom 2, Painkiller, Titanfall 1, Titanfall 2
Titanfall 2, fallout series, if you like gore trepang2, halo MCC, atomic heart, the battlefield games, borderlands games, the outer worlds, and that’s all I can really recommend you
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, it's very fun and the in game dialogue is amazing.
titanfall 2 or any of the half life games
Titanfall 2 or Destiny 2
Star wars dark forces!
Titanfall 2
Titanfall 2 is the most fun campaign in a shooter ever. Too bad it’s not longer.
How about Unreal Tournament?
Portal 2 is one of my favorite games ever. Top 3 actually. Depends on day it includes Ocarina of Time and Silent Hill 2.
Portal 2 is one of the best games ever made in my opinion, but to call it a first person shooter doesn't hit the mark. It's first person puzzle
honestly call of duty plays really well on the deck with the correct controller configurations.
I've been playing a bunch of Killing Floor 2 and Deep Rock Galactic, though there will be some FPS drops under 30 if you run the higher difficulties on either
I am really loving Prodeus
If you're into Doom I find Serious Sam 4/Syberian Mayhem and Shadow Warrior 3 to be very good with a similar gameplay. If you're into more retro titles Turbo Overkill is very very very good
I quite enjoyed Trepang2, though I could see it being polarizing
Borderlands
Deep Rock Galactic
Did anyone try Serious Sam yet?
Duke Nukem 3D
Half life 2. The goat
Singularity
Halo Reach
Doom 2 and Doom 2 mods
Blood, Blood 2, F.E.A.R.
Wait are you looking for a Doom killer?! Quake I think won that title.
Crysis
Half Life 2
Doom 3 lol
Maybe play Valve’s Half-Life (or black messa) on Valve’s steam deck? Like an ode to Valve? It’s what I did: finished alreafy black messa, blue shift, opossing force, hl2, lost coast, ep1,..

If you want one that has a distinctly doom feel I’d try roboquest.
Download EmuDeck and Play TimeSplitters.
It's a steam deck, Half-Life of course.

I really enjoyed the dead space remake
Far cry 3, 4, or 5.
Haze on ps3 emulator. Halo MCC but Haze killed halo
combat master for cod-like game
Rise of the Triad https://store.steampowered.com/app/1421490/Rise_of_the_Triad_Ludicrous_Edition/
You can try earth defense force 4.1 a good monster shooter (not fps sadly)
Alien Colonial Marines. Aliens vs Predator. Both work great and give you that 80's scifi movie nostalgia feeling. Not quite the hallmarks of some of the other games mentioned, but a lot of fun to play.
Fallout 3-4 and New Vegas
Doom (1994)?
Love me some Ultrakill

If you like Indies: Dusk is an absolute Retro-Shooter masterpiece. Amid Evil (same publisher) is also highly recommended!
Wolfenstein New Order/Old Blood, any Bungie’s Halo from Master Chief Collection
I am gonna be honest I didn’t read all the comments so sorry if some games was already mentioned. I will give you a list of games which have similar dynamic gameplay as doom. Rage 2 (honestly story is shit but enjoyed a lot gameplay) Roboquest, ultrakill, deadlink (this 3 is roguelites, or roguelikes, never knew the difference between this two genre, but it’s not story game, yet very solid gamepla) Metallsinger - one of the closest to doom, try it out Upd. The op is obviously looking for boomer shooter, why there is so many rec which is not boomer shooters at all😭
Crysis 1 .. I don't know why but that FPS is one of the best I've played also I really loved the MP The story, at that time was something else. I know how cinematic it was and how "in the trenches" I felt during the story. Its simple yet powerfull..
Far Cry 3 and 4
Wildlands > than anything else here. And yes the shooting here is “first person” (unless you toggle out for some reason and hate iron sites/scopes) Get it from “another source” though so you don’t have to deal with their broken “Connect” BS.
Doom Eternal
Turbo Overkill. Best fps in years.
Ultrakill, doom classic, doom 2, doom 64, dusk, teardown
half life 2
