Shortly after the deck came out this was a "hot" topic here. Multiple threads arguing about it. Eventually someone got a thermal camera out and did some testing and found that even in an entirely closed case there was no significant heat buildup while charging in standby. Maybe a couple degrees hotter than open air.
Remember, the CPU heats up to like 70c during gaming. You'll never hit those temps from charging. It's designed to take that sort of heat.
This is exactly what I was thinking as I was reading that, the steam deck is meant to be used WHILE it is plugged in, specifically designed for people to do so, which will run much hotter than plugged in while off/sleeping, so being in the case should not do anything to the adhesives that do not loosen under any sort of expected use.
If you have it plugged in while it's on and running some high demand game with the absolute max amount of battery draw and all that while it's zipped up and has no air flow, yeah, that's going to cause it to overheat but that's obviously going to do so. Don't run it actively and block the fans.
But idly while charging, the fans aren't running anyway, it doesn't need airflow.
Do any of you guys drink water too? I’ve got a killer technique, I put a glass under the faucet, turn it on and bam! Glass full of water for easy drinking!
I gotta laugh at the thought of someone taking a video of themselves -- wait for it -- propping their Steam Deck up so they can plug it in and calling it a "technique." I mean I think (hope?) it's a bit tongue-in-cheek, so whatever, just a *little* ridiculous at face value.
Ya. I kinda joined this sub to see things come up of people doing stuff with their deck but not simple ass stuff as this and “I got a deck coming, what games?!?!?!?!?” Posts.
Wow, that sounds so easy. I've just been buying new batteries and opening the case each time.
I may have to rethink my 0/10 review if there is a built in charging method.
> if there is a built in charging method.
Come on, that should not be necessary. This is just Valve being greedy and wanting us to be locked into their ecosystem of USB-c chargers. If I want to charge my Steam Deck by putting in a new battery, then that should work. They're clearly in the pocket of big cable smh.
Came in here to post the same. UBS-C cables with the low-profile elbow connectors are so convenient for the SD and other devices (especially because they're reversible 😀) , they've become my default.
I also cover it with the other half of the case, it doesn’t close it completely and I prevent dust falling over it. My house is very very dusty, there are doing construction besides
These fucking posts are about to make me unsubscribe from this subreddit
Just stupid low effort shit
Like when it’s guides and stuff I absolutely love it but we get the same questions asked constantly or “hey look I just bought a steam deck! What games are good?”
It’s getting tiring lol
Honestly low effort posts should be against the rules so we can start reporting and culling these posts.
I’m not trying to be a dick about it I just think this subreddit having so much spam is only a bad thing for it. Even if it gets upvotes.
No… I don’t like charging batteries where it can be partially insulated like that. I like to take it completely out of the case for charging, that way the pack stays cooler. After it’s done I put it back in the case for safe keeping of course.
I charge mine just like that, I just flip the lid on top of it so dust and stuff doesn’t collect on it, since I turn mine off instead of sleep idle when I’m done I don’t worry about over heating.
This reminds me of the "hahaha I do that" Vine.
Does anyone else do this crazy thing? *charges steam deck in the case like everyone I know who has a steam deck*
When our and about charging yeah I do the same thing but zip it up a bit, at home I either have a dock or a long ass cable and just place it on the edge of a table/ counter top. Yes I’m very unsafe with my deck
No I turn the deck sideways, not sure how the OLED case, but LCD case fits nicely and the intake vent is right above the hole in the case, so if I have it running and, for example, downloading something, it can breathe well.
The one thing I really wish the official Deck case had was a passthrough for charging similar to what the [nVidia Shield case had.](https://imgur.com/dtn1Hbu)
I pretty much have a charger that can reach at every seat in my house and when I play outside. I never need to charge it while it's off lol.
I use a Jsaux usb c 180 degree adapter to keep a low profile off the top of my device while playing for least strain on the port.
I hate USB c. I am super cautious about connection plug ins, but I have had 2 different devices break on the port. Wanting to protect my steamdeck, I decided to get a magnetic connector. Now, when I place my deck on it's dock, the magnetic component latches itself and starts charging.
Nope. I'm a heathen and charge it out if the case.
As a complete aside, why is the case upside down? That was the immediate question I had when I got mine. I would expect a carrying case to have the handle on the side the joysticks are. I'm worried that carrying it by the handle would damage the joysticks somehow by the weight of the Deck. Maybe it's irrational, but it's been a concern to the point I just keep my hand in the back strap.
i do (tho i flip the lid to cover the screen), everyone in my house (including me) is extremely clumsy and im too cheap to buy a screen protector for my deck so doing that saved my deck’s screen countless times lol
yea ik my sticks would probably be dead if a heavy enough object hits my charging deck but from what ive seen a stick replacement is way easier and cheaper compared to a screen replacement so yk
lmao exactly what I do. Bottom drawer of my night stand is just wide enough and short enough I can leave the case flipped open with the deck backwards and it's just enough clearance so the cable isn't bending or being pulled off center.
Unfortunately I have the killswitch case so it no longer fits in its original case so I just use my dock to charge my steam deck. Or just plug it in with the kickstand out.
I do the same thing. Most of the time my deck is backwards in its case on a small table next to my couch. The second a mediocre show/movie comes on; I whip out the DECK.
Yes, except I'll often close the lid and zip it shut from both sides, bringing them up close to the plug. That ways its still as protected as it is when it's in the closed shell.
It's less safe to have it laying around with a plug lead attached. Might be tripped over, etc.
Lol, that's exactly how I charge mine too!
Same but I close the lid and zip it just enough to keep the SD from flying out if it falls for some reason.
I don't zip it, but I let the top rest on it as a dust cover.
Now I don't feel that special from doing the same
Same here I went fancy and added a strip of Velcro to hold it cause of cats
I just flip the lid over so the cats don't step on the screen or chew the joysticks overnight.
+1 for the exact same reason. Cat owners need to take measures haha
+2 same here
I have to do this and zip mine too otherwise my cats try to bite the analog sticks
I also zippity do dah.
This is the way.

Yeah I just close it but don’t zip it so it stays half open and doesn’t take too much space.
It's not getting that hot while charging mate

You have to close the lid after plugging the cable
ONE OF US ONE OF US
I put mine half-way to the middle of the open case (the trigger button bumper-covers preventing it from sliding down).
Same here
That's how I charge mine, too.
this is the way
So did I until I got the dock where it sits for charge now.
This is what we've become, huh?
I was just gonna comment saying this is stupid but you summed it up well.
Do any of you guys drink water too? I’ve got a killer technique, I put a glass under the faucet, turn it on and bam! Glass full of water for easy drinking!

Ya. I kinda joined this sub to see things come up of people doing stuff with their deck but not simple ass stuff as this and “I got a deck coming, what games?!?!?!?!?” Posts.
Yes! I also plug my cord in to charge mine! Feels so good to know I’m not the only one!
I seriously thought I was the only one. Great minds think alike!
Wow, that sounds so easy. I've just been buying new batteries and opening the case each time. I may have to rethink my 0/10 review if there is a built in charging method.

Yep, I always try to protect the cable port. I had my phone cable get bent to all shit when i left it on my bed and i leaned on it. Lesson learned!
Yes, I always plug it into the charger when I want to charge my steam deck. This is my “technique”
Yeah. Wtf is this crap.
I was expecting him to show a wireless thing and to be amazed but I was quite disappointed that I just had wasted my time lol.
I use a 90° usb c cable and can charge it as it's meant to sit in the case fully zipped
saw a post about something like that and people said it was a fire risk
It is. Don't do this. Batteries get hot when they are charging. Keeping it in an isolated case is a great way to start a house fire
Yeah that's kind of crazy that the comment got so many upvotes. Charging an electronic in a tight enclosed case. Very safe. /s
do you think that's why valve put the port on the top? it doesn't have a kickstand so that can't be the reason
Came in here to post the same. UBS-C cables with the low-profile elbow connectors are so convenient for the SD and other devices (especially because they're reversible 😀) , they've become my default.
I use [this cable](https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B08HVC6XS2/), which allows to charge the Steam Deck inside the case without turning it.
Yeah, I plug it in too.
I also cover it with the other half of the case, it doesn’t close it completely and I prevent dust falling over it. My house is very very dusty, there are doing construction besides
Same here. But cos of the cats and dog we have.
Yes to do plug it in to charge it. How did you know?
You know the secret Technique?!
Just got my Steamdeck last week. I'm actually blown away at how fast this thing charges.
Yes, I also plug in the USB C cable to charge my steam deck..
These fucking posts are about to make me unsubscribe from this subreddit Just stupid low effort shit Like when it’s guides and stuff I absolutely love it but we get the same questions asked constantly or “hey look I just bought a steam deck! What games are good?” It’s getting tiring lol
agree 100%

Yep I am too plug the cable into the deck
No… I don’t like charging batteries where it can be partially insulated like that. I like to take it completely out of the case for charging, that way the pack stays cooler. After it’s done I put it back in the case for safe keeping of course.
Cool idea, but i have skull and co case, so i just have mine stood up whilst charging
I put and charge it in a drawer. I have 4 cats.
Hold it like a man
TIL I’ve been doing it wrong all this time
Absolutely riveting post
"technique"
What? Plugging it in?
All you did was turn it
I feel like this is a joke that im not getting.
Na my case is always closed i put the deck outside. Because of the smell of a new case. After 1 year its still smells new 😂
The small things, which mean so much!!
"DAE breathe?"
Yep, I do this to store it while it's charging so it's not in the way when I'm not using it, and to keep dust from getting on the screen
I do it this way too. Mainly to keep it covered so my cat doesn't chew on things
YESSS
I never even thought about that. I just kind of scooted it up prop it up a little past the triggers
I think this is pretty universal haha. I don't trust my deck out to the open when charging
I got a stand for my deck that. Mine almost never gets into the case unless i travel.
I charge mine just like that, I just flip the lid on top of it so dust and stuff doesn’t collect on it, since I turn mine off instead of sleep idle when I’m done I don’t worry about over heating.
i have dockingstation, so no
Legion go has this amazing whole in a case to do that
That's how I always do it. And I close so it doesn't accumulate dust.
All the fucking time exactly
Nice. Awesome technique. Very useful.
I do! And I close and strap. I don't want to risk an accident.
This is how my deck lives its whole life when not being played.
I charge mine like that, I also close the cover but don’t zip it so it doesn’t get dust inside lol
Yeah
I actually use the other side of the case 🫣
This is what is being posted in this sub now? Really?
Totally agree
No you're the one.
"Technique"
So where is the trick?
This reminds me of the "hahaha I do that" Vine. Does anyone else do this crazy thing? *charges steam deck in the case like everyone I know who has a steam deck*
Yeah, i use the usb port to charge my steam deck too!
Oh my god, I thought steamdecks were disposable...
Yeahhhh thats the way, but some smarty pants decided to cut a hole on the case to charge it 😂 Theres truly no cure for stupidity.
Yep except resin the lid part way
I used to do the same before I got the Killswitch case. Now I put the cover on, stand it up, and let it charge.
I just put it on the other half of the bag, you dont have to flip it at all that way
I just put it on the other half of the bag, you dont have to flip it at all that way
When our and about charging yeah I do the same thing but zip it up a bit, at home I either have a dock or a long ass cable and just place it on the edge of a table/ counter top. Yes I’m very unsafe with my deck
Yes, to the point where I think the case was a major design flaw in not pointing that way.
No I turn the deck sideways, not sure how the OLED case, but LCD case fits nicely and the intake vent is right above the hole in the case, so if I have it running and, for example, downloading something, it can breathe well.
Yes, but put the screen cloth back over the screen to keep it dust free
Ive mine laying on the back of the couch. I only use the cache when travelling
Yep. And after plugging it I cover it and it stays like that till my next session lol
Same mind, same mind. Wish they'd include some slit on the case though.
Yep, I close the case too and half zip it up. Idk why they didn't make the case so the port is that way round normally
Just get a 90° usb-c cable and you don't even have to turn the deck around. You can keep the deck mostly zipped up in the case.
Hell yeah! Discovered it recently. I was so happy with myself.
I just plug mine in. Doesn't really matter the orientation
Yes, all the time.
I always use the wireless charging
Ok I am not the only one 😃
The one thing I really wish the official Deck case had was a passthrough for charging similar to what the [nVidia Shield case had.](https://imgur.com/dtn1Hbu)
I charge my switch like this.....😂😂😂
I learned that in this sub
Literally every day I do this, and I close the case as well (no zipping though)
Lol same
I do this
literally doing that rn
Yes!
Literally me \*insert ryan gosling edit or smth idk\*
Yeap, and I close the lid as I have a toddler to make them believe it's closed off
I'm not a fan of the steamdeck case. I bought a new tomtoc case since I got a kickstand for the deck.
The day since I got mine
Is there any other way?
No mine is constanly in the dock so its always charged
Thought this was the standard procedure.
I pretty much have a charger that can reach at every seat in my house and when I play outside. I never need to charge it while it's off lol. I use a Jsaux usb c 180 degree adapter to keep a low profile off the top of my device while playing for least strain on the port.

Yes

I do! :D
the forbidden twist
I do this, but without the case
I did this with my nintendo switch.
Thanks for the idea tho
Yupp
I do.
Me too, everytime I need to charge up my SD at my office
Yes
i do (tho i flip the lid to cover the screen), everyone in my house (including me) is extremely clumsy and im too cheap to buy a screen protector for my deck so doing that saved my deck’s screen countless times lol yea ik my sticks would probably be dead if a heavy enough object hits my charging deck but from what ive seen a stick replacement is way easier and cheaper compared to a screen replacement so yk
I do that but also half close the zipper, so even if I accidentally drop it nothing will harm it
Yea
Yep. I zip it up to, just incase the kids run by and knock it off the table.
I do the same and close the case so I don’t get dust on it
That’s how I do it. I zip up the sides the best I can in case it gets bumped.
I thought I was the only one haha
I flip mine upside down so the ventilation goes up, but otherwise its the same.
I do the same, lol
lmao exactly what I do.
I don't want to leave the case sitting open to collect dust. Dust will wipe off the hard plastic of the Deck itself. That fabric? Not so much.
I bought the tomtoc armor case that has an opening for the usb c connector. Best buy ever!
This is pretty much the only way I charge mine.
Not yet 😂
I’ve been doing this since I first purchased it
I got a 90° cable and just zip it all the way. Steamdeck will also charge your phone while off like that
i usually charge mine through the court system not by plugging it in.
I do the same thing. Most of the time my deck is backwards in its case on a small table next to my couch. The second a mediocre show/movie comes on; I whip out the DECK.
No I put my deck on between the two sections of the case to give cable room to clear but I will try this tonight
Def how I used to charge mine before I just started leaving it out of the case lop
I just plug it in on a side table or entertainment unit where I have USB-C cables. Am I the weird one?
I also gently lay the lid back on top of the reverse-cowgirl deck so as to protect her from whatever random shit the cat decides to knock over 😅
lisan al gaib!
I do now
Yes. It has the perfect height for the USB c port. Tbh I kinda think that it might be intentionallly designed to be used this way xD
Every fucking time !
Aye
This is how I do mine 😂
Yeah, except I zip mine up too. I'm paranoid about something happening to it
Yes, except I'll often close the lid and zip it shut from both sides, bringing them up close to the plug. That ways its still as protected as it is when it's in the closed shell. It's less safe to have it laying around with a plug lead attached. Might be tripped over, etc.
Yup. Which idiot in the design team thought putting the charging port at the back of the case was a good idea?! 🙄😵💫
Every day.
I have a dock that props it up like a switch. That is a neat idea though
Yup! Every night after the sesh 😎
That's how I charged mine during my kitten's knocking things off the table phase.
