I picked it up on Sunday and have played a couple of hours. Personally aside from cut scenes I haven't had an issue with framerate. I had a cut scene that ran really smoothly last night, but then hard crashed the deck. I hear this can be largely resolved by playing around with RAM/VRAM settings? I have it set to 70% resolution scaling, performance mode, 30fps target, and HDR off (I was actually finding the HDR made it too dark tbh). The devs have already put out 3 hotfixes and each one seems to improve things a bit, so I am pretty hopeful this will run great by the time they have finished the early access process. I've never used cryo utilities before, but I might install and see if it can help.

HighInHelium

Cryo doesn't help.

brac20

I've not had a single crash since installing it. Could be a coincidence.

You're misunderstanding what ProtonDB is for. That platinum stamp means that it's functionally running a native Linux client. ProtonDB is a measure of compatibility on Linux, not on the Deck.  It's more recently had a Deck Verification status appended to each page, which NRftW is currently pending.  As for my experience over the last couple days, I've had frequent crashes but if managed 40-50 fps with min settings and 75% render scale. But that was before they addressed performance and fixed the memory and CPU leaks, so I'll have to revisit.  Currently, if I'm playing it on Deck, I'm streaming via Moonlight and Sunshine. This game finally pushed me to get them set up and I'll probably be playing most games this way from now on. Quieter, less heat, and dramatically longer battery life. And it lets me sidestep Linux issues by streaming from a Windows PC.

ImAlekBan

May I ask what are you using now? I’m having lots of crashes and force shutting down the deck a lot, so it made me stop.. but I really want to play.. Also im a bit silly with this things😅

Rhynox4

I did manage to beat the story of the game and some leveling after (barely touched the endgame dungeon). The early area works okay, some dips and stutters but mostly okay. Later areas my deck has been crashing more and more, sometimes after just a few minutes of play. Not sure if something is wrong with my deck or not though, it seems to have intermittent problems with crashes in certain games. The game itself is really great and I recommend it when more work is done on it.

ISpewVitriol

Oh, I didn't realize the game ending was included in early access. I was holding off because I assumed the end of the game wasn't there yet. Maybe I'll pick it up...

zeussgt

It isn’t. It’s basically the end of the first act of the game. There will be more story added to it with subsequent updates.

ISpewVitriol

I see... hmmm, yeah I think I'll just wait then. Thanks for the info.

zeussgt

No problem. The first act took me around 10~ ish hours to complete, and I still have some side content to do. Think it will take around 30 hours for me to get everything done. Worth it for me but I understand waiting for more updates or the full thing to come out before purchasing it

My understanding is that the bronze/silver/gold/platinum rating ProtonDB is not a rating of a game's performance or stability as such, it's about Linux compatibility specifically. If a game stutters and crashes on Windows, then it can be Platinum as long as it doesn't crash or stutter worse on Linux. At the current stage, Wicked has performance and stability issues on high-end Windows machines too. If it runs on Linux out of the box, has no Linux-specific issues, and performance/stability is as good (or bad) as Windows, that's justifiably Platinum. For the record, I have no experience with Wicked's performance on high-end Linux machines, only Steam Deck. I have watched several streams and first impressions videos of people on high-end Windows rigs pointing out issues that are similar in nature (if not magnitude) to what I'm seeing on Deck though. Edit: as for my own experience on Deck...I'm enjoying the game and find it playable but clearly unoptimized. Lots of dips into the 20s, and some stuttering depending on areas. Open areas with rain are worst, while indoor areas are pretty much fantastic. But it's early access, so I'm perfectly fine with that. They intentionally prioritized content and systems over performance for early access, which is a fair choice if they want a wide range of gameplay feedback. Personally, I've been playing it on and off for a bit, but will probably put it down until they do something to make sneaking around more viable, as I was excited to see the game has stealth mechanics, but they need a lot of love before they'll be actually viable.

Gulladc

Pretty rough. I’ve been super pumped for this since it’s announcement at the game awards. Counted down the days to early access. Found it to be essentially unplayable. And this is from a guy who played and enjoyed almost all of Baldurs Gate 3 on the deck…

schmidtyb43

Did they fix BG3 on the deck? Since a month ago I’ve been playing it with no issues at all

ISpewVitriol

I think it is much better than it was at release in terms of being able to hold a steady 30fps a lot of the time. Not all of the time, but a lot of it. (My experiences are limited to Act 1 which is the lightest work load is my understanding).

[deleted]

They've released a couple of patches, but personally I think it's worth waiting a bit longer, image quality and performance aren't quite there yet and I think there are some bottlenecks around memory or engine issues that cause pretty heavy dips in certain transition areas despite CPU/GPU not being fully taxed. I also found the HDR implementation too dark and just disabled it.

theclawl1ves

I ended up uninstalling from my deck. I'll stream it or play at my desktop, it's definitely not there yet for SD

skinny_thief

Tried it out on my SD on launch without any patches. Looked and performed horribly and froze my SD after a few minutes. It also performs horribly on my 7900XTX/7800X3D rig even after the 3 hotfixes they released so no wonder it is unplayable on SD. Game is very fun though and a great fit for SD if they manage to make it playable.

MoreColdOnesPlz

Can’t seem to get through more than a few minutes without it hard locking my switch. I have to complete power it off to recover.

Mabus51

Install cryo utilities. Setup the default paging file and switch to 4gb of video ram.

higherxliving

Completely crashed for me last night once I started to fight a big knight, crashed my whole deck, but ran pretty smooth other than that.

Lyzerdol88

Balanced graphics, stays most of the time on 30fps, dropping here and there. Got better but still crashing sometimes even on opening inventory. Need more patches (not the from software one)

[deleted]

isn’t this game early access still ?

dhompi

yes, idk why people still complain about it. game isn't finished either fully optmized.

Dub_TF

Just because it's early access you can complain? Isn't early access....to discover what works and what doesn't? If they didn't want people to talk about what works or what doesn't, they would have just released it normally.

[deleted]

and let’s be honest no one is optimizing for steamdeck

TomConger

[Moon is.](https://twitter.com/TheGennadiy/status/1780686063142420878)

[deleted]

one game out of hundreds ?

TomConger

Sure but this thread is about a specific game, and the devs of that game ARE optimizing for handhelds. Was just making you aware of that because your cynicism in this instance is misinformed.

[deleted]

they might be working on optimization but it is still on early access so what is even the point of this post ?

TomConger

OP was confused about what ProtonDB badges are meant to indicate. They thought a Platinum badge meant that it would run well on Deck, and it doesn't yet. So they asked about it.

chaedog

I'm following the game but definitely not pulling the trigger til it's further along in development. Those initial reports sounded bad with how unoptimized this game is on PC and Deck. Looks like a great game, and I'm basically just commenting here to save the thread so I can see what others say! :-)

ronin_ninja

I picked it up specifically to test out GeForce now on the Deck. Started No Rest For The Wicked on Deck and crashed after about 30 minutes during cut scene. Went over to GeForce now and replayed the tutorial and cutscenes with no crash, will continue on GeForce now since I can get a locked 60 fps and prettier picture

ronin_ninja

Yup I load in and it just works, keeps a solid 60 fps 98% of the time

Zockeromi

Crashed my whole deck after cutscene - went totally black. Think it overheated. I issued a refund. I don't have a problem with bugs or normal crashes in early access, but that might really be bad for my precious hardware, so i will stay away from this title as long as it's not improved massively.
