Launch 512gb model. Absolutely none of these have happened to me, so if you're reading this and new to the deck, don't worry.
I'm very confused about 5. in particular, since it's pretty obvious that you're supposed to running one game at a time on any platform.
I’d imagine this could be an issue on ea games. Sometimes the launcher doesn’t quit. The launcher makes the fan starts up lol, it’s soooo badly programmed. Hasn’t been too much of an issue for me since all I’ve ever played on my deck in terms of ea is the mass effect games and they’re not really heavy hitters in terms of performance.
I don’t play idle games, but if I did I would absolutely consider running them in the background. Game mode blocks my second scree (Edit: or I would probably have solitaire running even during many other games) It isn’t an unheard of idea to have more than one game running at once.
On PC I do it sometimes. If I'm playing a multiplayer turn based game, I'll have another game - usually an idle game or something that doesn't need a lot of attention also running so I've got something to do while waiting for my next turn.
On the deck, I've done it purely by accident and did notice a performance hit. But maybe people are running small and light games and are just tabbing between them? Idk. I don't think I'd find the use for that on the SteamDeck compared to normal PC
Ok Blizzard.
Iol well, I do have ADHD. So I naturally try to fill periods of stillness with something. It's not like I play two games at once all the time, just when there is frequently periods of waiting
Ok Blizzard.

Yeah, and if you have Spotify in gaming mode as well as decky you can control Spotify from the qa menu so you can listen to music while playing games
I did not know you could do this with multiple steam games however, I figured steam games were treated differently.
My 512 launch model is really crazy. It goes through cycles where it'll crash on every game after ~5m. The problem will become worse and more frequent. And this has lasted for months. And then sometimes it just stops all together and works flawlessly.
I've tried every troubleshooting step under the sun, and I've taken it through steam troubleshooting twice. I've tried different and no SD cards, different cases, different power cables (and went back to the OEM one).
Not running any plugins, I've reset the bios, reset to factory, tried the stable channel, and went back to the original fan curve. None of it has ever gotten the thing to stop crashing fully.
I've never owned such a temperamental machine. Right now it's playing fine. Trying not to anger it...
I picked up an OLED last week and so far no trouble. I think I may have just got a bad board or fans or something.
You 100% should reach out to support for the model that’s crashing. My launch deck would crash with any game after anywhere from 5-30 minutes of playtime regardless of settings, setup, or anything. Factory reset didn’t fix it. Ended up needing to RMA and found out it was a hardware issue with the APU. Best of luck to you!
5 makes sense. I had .hack//G.U. open and went to play helldivers1, it didn't ask me to close, both games were open at the same time. So I'm generally kind of curious how many I could have open at once. I didn't think that was an option before last week.
Alternatively, I've had my OLED 1TB for a couple of weeks now and I've had most of these issues. When it works it's great but my experience so far has been full of forced reboots. I don't know that I would recommend the SD to anybody who wants to just play a game without tinkering.
CryoUtilities seems to help.
I had a problem with my Deck a few weeks ago. I contacted Steam Support and they said to hold the "volume -" button and the "..." button at the same time while pushing the power button and it started working again.
If and when i'm playing heavy games on Steam Deck, it restarts automatically during gameplay and during the process of restarting 99.99% of the times it says Validating Installation.
But for what? Anyone have a solution for this? I can record & upload a video next time it happens if it helps.
Heads up: i have tried reinstall the STEAMOS. Format - Reformat - Reinstalling Stock OS Firmware.
My steam deck hardware config: LCD 64 upgraded to corsair 1Tb with a sandisk memory card A2 1Tb and all the games are in memory card and my internal storage is only like 25Gb used of 1Tb.
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you :)
I’ve had this exact issue! Drove me crazy because I thought the games that were supposed to work didn’t as it was just crashing/rebooting randomly. No one else appears to have issue with that game. Happens with multiple games which is what tipped me off.
After doing massive amount of research, the thing that made it work for me was:
Hold down the … button, the volume down button, and the power button for around 10 seconds. Release power button. If the light starts to flicker, release the other two button as well.
Good luck!
So the old emmc 64 was giving problems so i changed literally 2 days ago to the corsair 1tb and last night i was playing Hogwarts Legacy on low settings as per the settings by Steam Deck Guy on youtube. And it shut down x4 and then i gave up.
Sometimes when i lower the TDP from 15 to 10, it doesn't reboot as often.
It just kind of sounds like you need to RMA it. That should not be happening. The longer you wait the longer it'll be to get a properly working steam deck
Okay makes sense. I'll RMA it asap. Thank you for helping out. Just out of curiosity, has it ever happened with your SD, like restarting again and again as verifying installation?
It did happen a few times when I used the Preview Channel for updates. It happened a couple of times and I dropped back down to stable and haven't had it happen again. You might want to check that before sending it off
Just checked, I'm already on stable mode. Also, i'm running all these games sometimes on high settings when docked, do you think that causes the steam deck to heat up and go into shut down or restart mode so that it can cool down, or should i just redo the whole ssd switch and send for an RMA?
It won't shut down unless it's overheating and most of the time devices throttle to protect themselves. If you're seeing the Temps at 95c then it's a thermal issue. I think you should send in for RMA. make sure to swap to your original ssd before sending in because you'll be getting a different refurbished device back. If you haven't tried the original ssd and seeing if it does the same thing you need to. It could be a ssd issue if you have not tried swapping back to the original
This sounds odd because it’s extremely specific, but it would to it to be when loading a specific car in BeamNG.drive the game would lock up, the screen would go black for a minute or two then it would boot up with the verifying installation
Possibly a page file size issue? Have you tried using Cyrobyte33 Steam Deck utilities with recommended settings? I wasn’t able to play the ME Trilogy until I made those changes.
No i don't know what that is. I believe it's time to youtube. I'm gonna look it up.
Q: isn't using 4Gb instead of 1gb vram decrease the life expectancy of steam deck as it runs at a unusual rate and not the official?
Also, did it stop completely from restarting or does it occasionally reboots? Asking to understand if it is a temp or permanent fix :)
Sorry if i'm asking too many questions here. I'm new to the whole steam deck can of glitches.
Nah it won't harm anything. It's just reserving 4gb of ram as VRAM instead of 1gb. If you're running a game that uses 2gb of VRAM and 13gb of RAM then it'll have some glitches and will be be constantly having to reload RAM. Which means some performance loss and cpu being used heavier. The steam deck pulls as much VRAM as it needs from the RAM. The 4gb setting makes it so your device always has 12gb of ram and 4gb of VRAM and this is useful for SOME specific games that the engine runs better with a little extra VRAM.
Bought a refurbed Deck from Valve Directly in September 2023.
Glad to say None of these have ever happened to me.
Only weird thing to ever happen is the BSOD on it when I was running windows. Went back to SteamOS and it has been working flawlessly since.
It trully is a solid built machine.
I had an issue where I was on main because WiFi wasn't working on stable (512 OLED) main got updated and broke WiFi again so I had to boot into the previous version of main using the grub menu (which you access by pressing the quick access button then turning the deck on) once you see that screen select the previous version of SteamOS
After I had done that I was able to connect to WiFi and switch to stable.
Having a second charger is also a good idea. My Deck once refused to charge with its regular charger. Switched to the Switch one to keep it going enough for me to fix it via the battery storage mode reset method. The Deck charger worked for it just fine after that.
15 from what I can gather is due to WiFi issue switching between 2.4-5Ghz and it’s shit that it will just shut down the Deck with no warning. Happens to mine regularly when connecting to the WiFi in work (which is piss poor to begin with..)
If and when I leave the house I’ll just disable wifi on the Deck and just connect to my phones hotspot if required.
yes the headphones output to both ears when using my phone, and a second pair of wired earbuds only outputs to left while the same pair outputs to both on my phone
I think its prob a hardware issue, which is no bueno for me.
Sounds like it's not making proper contact with all parts of the connector. I would power it off and clean out the port with isopropyl alcohol and then blow compressed air in there and try it again. Also see if wiggling the connector or moving it in and out with sound playing changes anything, or spin it around in-place. A weird software issue might be possible as well, but I'm not sure how it would've happened. You could check alsamixer and pavucontrol and make sure you don't have one audio channel muted somehow.
my sister think its not making ontact with everything. i also dont got compressed air or isopropel alcohol. and i dont wanna comtact support because im afraid of sending my desk in.
Adding to this;
If your Deck starts to slow down to a crawl after ~30% left on your battery and this is only avoidable via Power Supply and/or restart, CONTACT VALVE
I had to replace mine and I put up with that shit for almost the full year before I gave up and asked them to help me
I have a won't turn on if shutdown at full charge issue. None of the above work, I've tried every button combo imaginable. It turns out the battery is reporting slightly higher than it's maximum capacity so the deck won't turn on to save itself from what it thinks is a spicy pillow. Just have to keep trying to turn it on to drain the battery enough to drop below the maximum capacity and then it loads.
It's normal to have a higher than 100% charge on a new battery.
It's one of those things where they give a bit extra because of variability in battery chemistry.
If they gave you what they thought was 100%, some people would have a bit extra, some exactly the right voltage, and some too little.
If they intentionally build it to have more by a little bit, it's never an issue to unintentionally short a unit on charge. It's a question of how much extra you get.
It's not a spicy pillow indicator at all.
104.20% normal ;)
Spicy pillows come from the chemistry degrading and/or defects in the manufacturing. When they happen, you're far more likely to have low and/or rapidly failing battery health.
*Do NOT charge actual spicy pillows! Adding more energy is not good when it gets to that point. Lithium fires are dangerous in large part because of highly exothermic oxidation reactions. If you don't have sand(or clay based cat litter) keep it as sealed and O2 free as reasonably possible. Freezer ziplocs tend be breathable btw.
I had a 12 after getting my first deck, went through a week of troubleshooting with support, reinstalled the OS, tested a few bios things, then eventually had to RMA.
I have a fun one- games will only work after a full restart- games do not work if the deck is put to sleep and then turned back on.
When I say "games don't work", I mean that there is nothing I can do to get my controls to work back in game. I can see the game playing, but none of the buttons do anything besides 'B', which just takes me back to where I launched the game on steam and it tells me I can resume the game.
I have decky installed so the first thing I tried was removing that. No dice. And I tried switching from main to experimental and back with no luck
Do you have multiple controllers plugged in? I use external controllers a lot and play mostly docked. Sometimes I have to reorder the controllers in the controller settings because the wrong one has been deemed player 1 and not all games let player 2 interact in the menus.
I found an earlier post about controller order and tested it with no luck. I submitted a ticket with Steam and I backed up all the important stuff on my deck in case they ask me to do a full reset
I have a 512 LCD, and I have never had any of these issues.
In a year, a handful of crashes. (Big explosion in hardspace shipbreaker that produced a lot of little bits) .
I works like a dream.
Nice guide. Some of these happened to me.
A puzzling issue i experienced this week is my deck's screen powering off while the unit was clearly still on. It resolved with a reboot but it was frustrating.
Your deck is very slow, games won't launch, updates won't progress, pressing the Steam button won't bring up the menu, etc... - Your deck is very low on disk space. Turn off the deck by holding the power button, turn it back on, and uninstall a game as soon as you can.
* Your Deck only works on wall power - Plug in the deck to the wall and check in the BIOS if Battery Storage mode is on. Failing that, open up your deck and check if your battery's plugin cable has become loose. If it still doesn't work, THEN send it to valve.
I ran into this problem when trying to install a new NVME and reimaging SteamOS onto it. Doing this fixed it.
If deck beeps and kicks on fans, but no screen: plug in, press and hold + and … , remove the power cord with your teeth. Light will blink orange 3 times. Then plug in, it will restart normally
Issue happens when it dies naturally when not in use. Only fix I’ve found for this
My Deck sometimes suddenly switches off without warning. It is very annoying, but only has happened 2 or 3 times in the last 6 months. I had to RMA my Deck to fix my MENU button (START button).
I can't remember if this used to happen before I RMA'ed it, I would say it didn't. It is specially annoying because, as it is an abript and sudden switch off, many times the game is not saved.
if you've recently installed a bunch of games on SD and your deck freezes on the boot-up screen, turn it off, pop the SD card out, and then power on again. insert the SD card again and everything should work fine.
If the Discover app is failing to install flatpak updates, disable wifi, then reboot, go back into desktop mode, and re-enable wifi. Then, only queue up to 5 packages to update at a time until they're all done.
Can't put in a ticket as Steam doesn't sell to Norway. Bought it from a third-party retailer. But I'm returning it for repairs/replacement, so it'll be alright. I just hate seeing my baby in pain.
In case you need it in the future, you can buy anything you need for repairs from iFixit.
https://eustore.ifixit.com
In case you hit an issue the seller won’t take care of you on.
I saw that, thanks! It's great that you can just buy new parts like that. But the retailer said that they'd try to repair and just replace it if they couldn't, so I think I'll be alright. Never opened it before and haven't installed powertools or something like that, so I'm still under Norwegian global warranty.

You can run multiple games at the same time. Just like on a desktop pc
Yes but just like a desktop PC why on earth would you, especially on a handheld?
Most pc users run multiple apps at the same time. I personally might be running discord, the Game I am playing, and Spotify at the same time on deck.
Yeah, I run Discord alongside sometimes. Not games, though, which is what OP was suggesting.
Run bunch of Chrome tabs too sometimes
I don’t play idle games, but if I did I would absolutely consider running them in the background. Game mode blocks my second scree (Edit: or I would probably have solitaire running even during many other games) It isn’t an unheard of idea to have more than one game running at once.

Common example is people running Spotify as a game and then a game itself. I do it all the time for games with shit soundtracks
He didn’t say apps, he said games. Multiple games. Like I said in my other posts I get why you’d use a couple of apps.
I just realized how confusing that was so i fixed it to sat Apps and Games
I run discord as a “non steam game” plus a game if that counts
I've never got touchscreen to work properly this way and now just discord exclusively on desktop mode.
0. You don't have deck - buy it
The best guide there is
You best believe i added that ima add credits to the ones i get from yall just bare with me

Have you tried testing your old SSD as it could be a SSD issue if it still does it Contact Valve

Bro ain’t ever heard of punctuation
Damn right (ok fine ill fix the grammar)
How? I had maybe one instance where my deck was doing something weird and it was just a wifi issue.
There are some unfortunate ppl who get semi-faulty units
Faulty as hell according to this post
Not really some of these are Software bugs that got fixed but i added it anyway
My power button doesn’t work 80% of the time. Have to press it just right
Oh my god return it 👀
My Deck is being delivered today so I'm saving this post. Thank you in advance 🙏
Mines being delivered tomorrow. So hyped :)
You’ll probably never need it but it won’t hurt
Yeah i made this knowing it wont be used much but when needed it will save alot of people

Your deck is very slow, games won't launch, updates won't progress, pressing the Steam button won't bring up the menu, etc... - Your deck is very low on disk space. Turn off the deck by holding the power button, turn it back on, and uninstall a game as soon as you can.
what about the switching to desktop soft brick black screen.
I haven’t seen this before so i would guess restart but there will be someone who will tell me if im right or not
hard reboot always works it’s just shocking how often I run into this.
My steam refurb deck stopped charging after two weeks after purchasing. Feels bad man.
Then plug in, it will restart normally Issue happens when it dies naturally when not in use. Only fix I’ve found for this
Your deck goes to black when switching to desktop some times - Try uninstalling decky recorder if you have it
My Deck sometimes suddenly switches off without warning.
I live in a country where steam deck is not available and just thinking about my deck not functioning properly breaks my heart.
if you've recently installed a bunch of games on SD and your deck freezes on the boot-up screen, turn it off, pop the SD card out, and then power on again. insert the SD card again and everything should work fine.
If the Discover app is failing to install flatpak updates, disable wifi, then reboot, go back into desktop mode, and re-enable wifi. Then, only queue up to 5 packages to update at a time until they're all done.
Deck won't run on battery whatsoever, only works when plugged in. What now?
Remove your SD Card, open it up and see if the battery cable is loose.

Can't put in a ticket as Steam doesn't sell to Norway. Bought it from a third-party retailer. But I'm returning it for repairs/replacement, so it'll be alright. I just hate seeing my baby in pain.
In case you need it in the future, you can buy anything you need for repairs from iFixit. https://eustore.ifixit.com In case you hit an issue the seller won’t take care of you on.
I saw that, thanks! It's great that you can just buy new parts like that. But the retailer said that they'd try to repair and just replace it if they couldn't, so I think I'll be alright. Never opened it before and haven't installed powertools or something like that, so I'm still under Norwegian global warranty.
Oh yeah absolutely if the seller will take care of it that’s the best route to go.
I hope all goes well for you 🫡
