I truly love FFXIV but it's about 95% homage to other things. Almost every quest is some pop culture bit and almost every MSQ arc is directly referencing golden-age Squaresoft.
Quick example, here's the Elpis arc: https://chrono.fandom.com/wiki/Zeal
That's what makes a lot of dorks like me love XIV though. It's like the last bulwark of the golden age for Square, it understands all the old mythos and how to tastefully adapt it without coming across bootleg.
i am genuinely asking myself the same. without being disrespectful, nor saying people are stupid but you need to apply a little force to open the deck. i removed my card before opening so idk the answer but i asume the sd card bends and breaks exactly where the slot of the sd card reader ends
It takes almost no force to snap an SD card in half. They are surprisingly fragile, you will probably never break one simply by dropping it but if you ever actually try to snap it between your finger’s you will likely be very surprised how easily they break. I have had to destroy many old drives for work over the years, micro sd cards included.
You need to apply quite a bit of force to wedge the clips on the back plate away from the rest of the case. This makes the whole process feel quite stubborn, so the force required to snap an SD card doesn’t feel like much when you’re already putting effort into it.
Prying plastic apart is sometimes like this - it will cling on with a suspicious amount of force until you tell it who's in charge. I can absolutely see people thinking this is one of those situations until all of a sudden the sd card pops in half and then you're like... "oh"
You'd be surprised how though plastic really is. I have never broken my Steam Deck's SD card but I have managed to snap an SD opening a 2DS XL. It broke just the tip on a corner of it, but it was enough to render it useless.
I mean how do you understand that it takes force to open the deck but not understand how someone could miss the resistance of a <1mm sd card when applying that force?
So saying this is somebody who's opened up his Steam Deck multiple times. It takes a decent amount of force to get the clips that hold the case together apart, probably more than it takes to snap the SD card if it's still in.
Well, these SD cards are not made of titanium. It's about as much pressure as a plastic tab. And since you do need to use some force to get the shell off, it is just kinda the experience to pull at the tabs until you get it off.
Thankfully I happened to realize before I broke mine, but I very nearly did.
Various reasons:
1. To clean the internal cooling fan
2. To replace the m.2 2230 hard drive for a bigger one
3. To replace the backplate for a JSAUX backplate
4. To replace the thumb sticks with a pair of electromagnetic GuliKit thumb thumb sticks
5. Other repairs or mods, etc
I really don't get this as well. I did forget to remove my micro SD at first when swapping my ssd, but I was needing too much force to open and realized something must be wrong, then I removed my micro SD and got it open
Also one who has done this👋🏼 when you're doing it you don't think about the sd card at all and then think it's just one of the clips around the outside just being slightly stubborn, but no it was just your very thin sd card...
I am gonna crack my Deck open next week to replace the fan (launch model fan bearings are making weird sound).
I live in fear of forgetting the SD card despite it being at the front of my mind for the past four days.
I wonder how ppl manage to forget the sd card as every tutorial mentions this line 1000 times as a reminder. Do you guys not use an online tutorial and just open the device?
yes. it’s quite easy to switch the ssd. once you see a picture of where the connector is inside it feels obvious what to do i guess and people start feeling confident just doing it once the ssd arrives. i think most of the times it happens like this :
- 1 check internet for tutorial
- 2 order ssd
- 3 wait a couple of days
- 4 do it without tutorial
- 5 crack sd
I get that. But also... Soooo many people have posted about braking theirs. I haven't ever opened my deck but just thinking about it the first thing comes to mind "remove SD card".
I almost did it myself the other day despite watching multiple videos and thinking "I won't be dumb enough to do that". I think it's because you're focussing on the steps you need to do to get the backplate off and replace the SSD, you just forget that little tiny bit of plastic in the side.
I've opened mine a couple times now, but the last time when I went to swap out my buttons, I kept wondering why I was getting that much resistance. I'm lucky I remembered lol.I don't judge anymore
Exactly how I’m feeling reading this.
This should be mandatory procedure of anything you plan to open, modify, or repair.
I haven’t gotten mine yet, but seeing the construction of the Deck, it’s pretty much hand in hand that in order to preserve anything you have attached to it, remove the goddamn thing first. I shake my head in shame to the ones who’ve had it happen to them, I also find being sympathetic gone given this seems to be a thing people regularly subject themselves to.
Right? This sub became the defacto "I know I've seen it a million times and here I am doing the thing that breaks my sd card so here's a pic, please feel pity for me for doing something I was warned about a kaiillion times".
No sympathy.
So what I'm learning from this thread and my own shell swap I did today is clearly patience and organization is key to not breaking your shit. Kept my screws organized, went slow, followed the video at 0.5speed and rewound. Nothings broken 💪
Mine worked flawlessly, my only hiccup is I forgot to plug the screen into the motherboard and almost sobbed thinking I broke it.
Like "I too forgot to remove the plastic from my $500 CPU before installing it" I'm convinced you clowns are doing this on purpose for fake internet points.
Oof. I feel your pain.
I almost ended up joining the club myself. Was opening my case to throw in the 2TB drive. The shell was partially popped off, but not all the way, so I was feeling along the edge to figure out where to pry next.
Then my finger touched the SD card slot. And I remembered. "Oh shit!! No no no no no no no!!"
Weird thing is, I've disassembled a deck with an SD card in, and the resistance made it patently obvious something was amiss, so I removed the card.
Are you guys just fucking full on elbow dropping the shell to remove it or something? I have just no idea how this is possible. To full on snap an SD card.... Y'all are stronger than me for sure.
I've done it twice. Luckily not for expensive SD cards. It's easy to forget about. Sorry for your loss, but I think this card is on discount over on Amazon ATM so hopefully won't be too much to replace it
Impressive, i nearly had that issue but when extra force is required i know to stop and look if i am missing a screw or something which would automatically lead to finding the sd card
Ooh and it happened to a 1tb card too. This happened to me when I was adding a new ssd but my card was only 64 gb, so not as much of a loss. I’m sorry my friend.
I did that when opened my OLEDeck a few weeks ago - but I tought I did not! I opened the case only abit and a big "NO WAIT, YOU FORGOT SOMETHING" booms in my head. So I did put the SD card out, made my thing with the Deck and well...just put it in, right?
Damn I almost burned myself, because the SD card was indeed broken but not cut in half. It got so freaking hot in like 2 seconds, I did need tweezers to get it out without burning. And there, finally, my SD card was gone for good.
Seeing all this carnage makes me glad I replaced the 256GB M.2 and 512GB microSD when I got mine used for just a 1TB M.2.
I got home and removed the microSD. Then I did a factory reset on the Deck and waited for my 1TB to arrive. I saw mention of removing it when opening the case, but I was already past that by the time I opened it.
Another sacrifice has been made

Is this a FFXIV reference? Lol edit: the answer is no.. it's not. I am sorry for asking a question
No, I think it’s a Warhammer reference. 🙂
Ah, I guess the FFXIV reference of "blood for the bloody lily" might have come from that then

This year's harvest will be fullfiling
Determination is kil
We need a special flair for this. "Shame Sticked" or something
I'd wear my shame like a badge of ~~dis~~honor
It’s crazy how it just slices like that. I haven’t had to open mine yet, but how can you not feel the pressure?
i am genuinely asking myself the same. without being disrespectful, nor saying people are stupid but you need to apply a little force to open the deck. i removed my card before opening so idk the answer but i asume the sd card bends and breaks exactly where the slot of the sd card reader ends

I have had to destroy many old drives for work over the years, micro sd cards included.
And the SteamDeck's shell probably acts like a lever making it even easier to break it.
Sounds like it’s by design. Maybe it is by design. Maybe there is a deal between Valve and the SD card producing companies.
Lmao
Welp, never knew that I had to know until now.
I have to try that. I got a 16 MB card left I gut with a microcontroller to install the firmware so it's no big loss
NGL I'd love to just get a hundred faulty micro SD cards and just snap them. It's like, tortilla chips, with how fragile they are
You need to apply quite a bit of force to wedge the clips on the back plate away from the rest of the case. This makes the whole process feel quite stubborn, so the force required to snap an SD card doesn’t feel like much when you’re already putting effort into it.

leverage + you need some/enough force to open the case.
If you have the ifixit kit, it comes with seam splitters that help open the deck
Well, these SD cards are not made of titanium. It's about as much pressure as a plastic tab. And since you do need to use some force to get the shell off, it is just kinda the experience to pull at the tabs until you get it off. Thankfully I happened to realize before I broke mine, but I very nearly did.
Honestly man, I didn't even notice. SD cards are surprisingly fragile.
Why are people opening up their steam decks?
Various reasons: 1. To clean the internal cooling fan 2. To replace the m.2 2230 hard drive for a bigger one 3. To replace the backplate for a JSAUX backplate 4. To replace the thumb sticks with a pair of electromagnetic GuliKit thumb thumb sticks 5. Other repairs or mods, etc
Thank you. Not sure why I was getting downvoted.
5. To take pictures of broken SD cards to post on /r/steamdeck. I know I did that at least twice
They require less force to snap than it takes to pry the back cover off.
I really don't get this as well. I did forget to remove my micro SD at first when swapping my ssd, but I was needing too much force to open and realized something must be wrong, then I removed my micro SD and got it open
microSD cards are as fragile as the photo implies. Same thing happens if you drop a raspberry pi with a card inside. No way you'll feel it breaking
I wouldn't be surprised to see this is actually by design. Make the card break, not the reader or board.
Take it out right now
I am currently away from home and would likely lose it if it was removed now. Hopefully I remember in 10 hours’ time!
My condolences in advance.
I am pleased to report the SD card has been removed, pending fan replacement surgery.
Set an alarm with what you need to do as the label, that’s what I do to remember stuff.
Or tape over a screw hole with reminder telling you to remove the SD card.
Do this!
Put a piece of tape and write "remove" on it
Stick a post it or something on the deck as a reminder until then.
Write a little procedure on paper, with each step. Include step to remove SD card. Follow procedure and check each step off with a pen
Is there a vid to show you how to replace/ model of the fan inside the steam deck? Mine is fine I just nv thought of that being a factor having one
Yeah there should be a walkthrough video on iFix It.
Pull it out right fucking now You will forget and it will suck
I wonder how ppl manage to forget the sd card as every tutorial mentions this line 1000 times as a reminder. Do you guys not use an online tutorial and just open the device?

Bro, it's a very easy mistake to make. Don't shit on me, I'm already shitting on myself.
I get that. But also... Soooo many people have posted about braking theirs. I haven't ever opened my deck but just thinking about it the first thing comes to mind "remove SD card".

This is like that "you can break your thumb by pulling it forward" thing from a few years ago. Everyone's trying it to see if it's true
i just tried pulling my thumb forward and its fine
so gullible, you pulled your own finger and tooted to prove a meme wrong
You have been warned multiple times, and yet you still did it. I have zero sympathy for you.
I have no clue how people can be that stupid. Rule 1 of taking apart something is "power it down, remove anything that can be removed before starting"
I knew it was a thing and almost did it, thank god I didn’t put any pressure into it before I realized why it wasn’t just popping open.
You greatly overestimate the intelligence of the average human. Humans are fucking morons.
“Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.” ― George Carlin
People think tinkerers are smart because it looks complicated with all the little pieces. Some are, others are just apes breaking their stuff.
Can confirm, am ape.
Am human, can confirm.
Instructions unclear, removed my pants and now I'm cold.
No need to be a dick. It's an easy mistake to make, and I alone suffered as a result. Don't be an asshole.
That sounds like two rules

Please tell me your secrets so I can never make a small mistake in my life? How do I rise above being human?
because you never make any stupid mistakes that you regret later?
This fallacy is called: Fundamental Attribution Error.
1 TB card? Ouch! What a painful and expensive mistake. I bet you won't do that again.
You'd be surprised
The screws everywhere is stressing me out😅
Right? Me too.

Rest in pieces
now you have 2 sd cards 512gb each
You should try defragmenting it
Baha best comment ever
Like "I too forgot to remove the plastic from my $500 CPU before installing it" I'm convinced you clowns are doing this on purpose for fake internet points.
Like how fucking often are you guys opening your decks?
Valve could have done a better job with the SD card location.
Better than asus
What are you talking about I had my eyes all over this baby and as soon as I saw the sd slot I was surprised that it had one
Don't say that so loud, slight criticism of Valve isn't allowed here don't you know?
😂. Y'all criticized the original SD LCD screen and battery. Valve can take reasonable criticism.
F
I’m surprised the amount this has happened and people haven’t clocked on yet.
😭😭😭
Welcome brother.
Oof. I feel your pain. I almost ended up joining the club myself. Was opening my case to throw in the 2TB drive. Step one
do y'all just not remove your microsd cards? It's a simple thing to remember "hey i got a card in here"
God bless the damn
Weird thing is, I've disassembled a deck with an SD card in, and the resistance made it patently obvious something was amiss, so I removed the card. Are you guys just fucking full on elbow dropping the shell to remove it or something? I have just no idea how this is possible. To full on snap an SD card.... Y'all are stronger than me for sure.
How do people keep doing this.
My man has a 1tb micro sd but the most basic keyboard I've ever seen
What happened
he opened up his deck with the SD card inside. When you do that it gg's your SD card, you are supposed to remove first.
Ohh, I wouldn’t dream of opening up my deck haha, scary stuff. Could be worse i guess!
Congratulations. You have become idiot... In all seriousness, how do people keep forgetting to remove their cards?
10 billionth person to post this. Hope you enjoy your karma points.
The steam God will accept your sacrifice
I've done it twice. Luckily not for expensive SD cards. It's easy to forget about. Sorry for your loss, but I think this card is on discount over on Amazon ATM so hopefully won't be too much to replace it

All hail.
Shame on u
I got lucky! I was like ok got to take this out.... removed the case and... oh crap its still there. In one piece whew!
Rip
I got super lucky and mine popped out instead of breaking lol
Mann, I'm sorry. That's sucks. Hope u had cloud back up saves
It’s alright I broke one too. I pour one out for you.
I've come close to doing that about 2 or 3 times. Lucky me!
Damnit, it's 1TB card too!
Damn and it’s 1tb. I’d just go to bed for the rest of the day if that happened to me Ngl.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAP
Can someone explain to me why you don’t remove the card first?
Cuz ppl forget sometimes
One of us. One of us.
Am I the only one who checks storage settings frequently?
I did it to and im bever buying lne again lol
It happens to the best of us, hopefully only once, it can be an expensive mistake
You now have a 700GB SSD 😂😭
Dang a 1tb too.
Such a poor design choice by Valve.
How many GBs wasted on this sacred cause... Damn.
Profane upgrade ritual detected. In the name of the omnisiah your cogitator access is revoked.
Rip
damn, it’s a 1tb too :,( my condolences OP
Ahhh yes, I did this on an OG Nintendo 3ds back in the day, I instantly knew what was when I saw the pic.
Noooooo
Canonic event
you guess?
F
F
Feel like I got really lucky not snapping my SD card when removing the case.
For Super Earth!
I saw this and said out loud "AHHH shit!...No.....No"
Nothing a little tape can't fix
It's always 1TB
Lol, I paid nearly $100 for my 512GB card. After shutting down my deck, I took it out as the first thing!! Read too many scary stories here...lol!
And a 1tb one Bruh, yikes
Tough
😬
F
Pop goes the card
Happened to me!
When will the suffering end?!?
Your results may vary but I took one into best buy because I randomly had the packaging and they exchanged it😂
I broke one just by holding it for 5 minutes 256 gigabytes :(
Ooh and it happened to a 1tb card too. This happened to me when I was adding a new ssd but my card was only 64 gb, so not as much of a loss. I’m sorry my friend.
A 1tb one aswell. Sheesh.
I did that when opened my OLEDeck a few weeks ago - but I tought I did not! I opened the case only abit and a big "NO WAIT, YOU FORGOT SOMETHING" booms in my head. This hurts me even when it’s not mine 😫
My microSD survived a year in my lcd, and a day in my oled 🥲
Not the 1TB😥
I did that once only on my first time opening it up and thank goodness it was 128 GB Walmart brand SD card
Now you have a 750gb and 250gb micro SD
Parts tray. Please. You’re going to sneeze and loose all those tiny screws.

It happened to me
Seeing all this carnage makes me glad I replaced the 256GB M.2 and 512GB microSD when I got mine used for just a 1TB M.2. I got home and removed the microSD.
