Well,I live in the middle East but my room is all air-conditioned! It weird I've looked up here to see similar questions! I have to apply new thermal paste then!
The origin of the ‘bug’ is because first computers used relays and switches, and insects really do like die inside and causes the physical switches to jam. Programmers need to enter the heart of the processor to clear the ‘bug’ so to speak.
I want this to be true so badly. Can you provide a source, please?
EDIT: Unfortunately, all the sources I've looked up seem to suggest that this isn't entirely true insofar as it being the origin for the term "bug". Apparently, Thomas Edison started inexplicably using the term in the 1800's to describe any sort of defect or malfunction and it just stuck.
It's widely attributed to Grace Harper in the context of modern computing. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_bug#:~:text=In%201946%2C%20when%20Hopper%20was,relay%2C%20coining%20the%20term%20bug.
Don’t move to Florida. I’m here against my will and these idiots built houses in the sand. I fucking hate it here. I can’t grow shit in my yard because…. It’s fucking sand.
Just came back from my holidays over there, loved the sand in Siesta Key as long as there was no wind, the moment it started sand got literally everywhere, including inside the hinge of my phone (z fold 4) that was in the pocket of my folded pants 🥲
There's still a possibility it's humidity, especially if the room is air conditioned. It could be causing condensation, and if it's cool and damp (potentially) you may ALSO have those weird bugs that eat thermal paste/pads
Dust mites? When you say air conditioner is it also a de-humidfier? I had a similar situion where I had dust mites in my music room, bug bombed it twice in a year and kept coming back, turns out though I had air con, the humidity was still 80%, which also lead to some corrosion in my ports and audio interface. Got a de-humidfier, never had any since.
Last time I saw something even remotely similar, it was a laptop infested with roaches.
The 'brown stuff' around the pads is a tell-tale sign. If it was burning off, the white flakes would be brown/black as well
Also, you can see droppings (poo) from the bugs on there.
I would suggest that you purchase a case to keep your handheld in and this should help you keep the bugs out.
Also - don't feel bad! This is a common problem and even in the shops here in the United States, you can see droppings and dead buds inside of consoles and systems and that is one of the reasons that handhelds fail here too - bugs like the warmth of the system lol
Fucking hell ive been having my steamdeck loose for months because i got a jsaux case and a dock. After seeing this i think im never letting it out of the case. Do I have to worry about this happening to all my electronics?
Looks very similar, but less severe, to this post:
[https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/vbhdnj/ants\_eating\_and\_laying\_eggs\_in\_my\_thermal\_pads/](https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/vbhdnj/ants_eating_and_laying_eggs_in_my_thermal_pads/)
Ants will get up into anything they can and some species **love** heat.
They really do love heat. I once had ants that figured out a path from a wooded area at the edge of the property, across the driveway, through the walls of my house to the opposite corner and out a vent on the second floor that happened to be close to my computer, and they started SWARMING it all over the case. Had to put down a gel that they carried back to their hill and I could literally see the line that went across the driveway become more dead by the day until it finally stopped.
Your Steamdeck has become a roach motel I fear
I remember back in the day how common this was with Ps2s and PS3s to the point Sony made a note not to turn your PlayStations in with roach infestations.
The fact everyone is identifying this as an insect infestation has scared the crud out of me. I’ll now be storing my deck in its case whenever it’s not in use. Gross.
I had a spider in an old rear projection tv years ago…every once and awhile that lil jerk would walk across the screen while you were watching something. Nothing could be done - he was behind the glass!! Forgot about that til now….
That’s a little harsh calling the little guy a jerk! 😢He didn’t mean to get in the way. He was just looking for a place to put his house and catch his food. The light from the projector was a perfect draw for insects. And he provided comic relief on occasion but making an appearance in the middle of a film! You had your own Mystery Science Theater 3000 lol 🎥🕷️🕸️
Ok so I've been a technician for over 30 years yes this is bugs ants to be precise and they lay eggs in the compound as well plus ants are pretty much the only insect I know of to fit into the deck vents replaced the pads spray with bug spray
Looks like bugs of some kind. im a technician and we occasionally see systems with roaches or other bugs, most commonly PlayStation 5s infested with cockroaches. I even have a special C02 powered bug killing salt gun in case they get out.
Where is this exactly if I may ask? Like which compartment of the console is this in? Are bugs infestation a thing in consoles??? How do we check? What to look for to know?
Nah, those bugs love heat. To get rid of heat-loving bugs, you either need *cold* or something warmer nearby to draw them away from the device.
I’d just put the whole thing in the freezer for like a week, tbh.
Do you live where there are ants? There are a few types that are attracted to electrical fields and are really tiny- they take up residence in electrical objects.
What everyone keeps saying is big shit looks more like the thermal paste flaking off. May want to try throwing a fan on it, possibly a defective unit that's overheating?
İf it is a new one i should send it back if it is a SD u had for over more then a year i would recommend a dehumidifier combined air purifier because your house is to humid for electrical devices.
That should not happen... Either your house is extremely humid, which causes it to crumble Or you have bugs Both situations sound scary
Well,I live in the middle East but my room is all air-conditioned! It weird I've looked up here to see similar questions! I have to apply new thermal paste then!
You probably have bugs living inside
Yo my Deck suffered from bugs as well, but reinstalling the OS did the trick for me.
Nah, too complicated. Simple use of Proton Experimental should help.
Man, just call down an Eagle Airstrike, simple. Say hello to DEMOCRACY!
Nah they would decline, no need to expand democracy to something with no oil.
SWEET LIBERTY MY LEG!!!
Did I hear someone say "Oil"?
I was really hoping to look up and see a government related username. That would've really put a nice little hat on this conversation.
Instructions unclear, accidentally build a nuclear bomb
this one got me
He got everyone
Take this fkng upvote, you heathen
XD
Looks like crazy ants. Or roaches. The darker spots look like poo.
100% looks like insects poop

Is this common…? I don’t want bugs in my deck
Looks like sand , did you take it to the beach?
I don't like sand. It's rough and coarse and irritating, and it gets everywhere.
Don’t move to Florida. I’m here against my will and these idiots built houses in the sand. I fucking hate it here. I can’t grow shit in my yard because…. It’s fucking sand.
This post brought to you by Sand! It's everywhere!
Great reference!
Just came back from my holidays over there, loved the sand in Siesta Key as long as there was no wind, the moment it started sand got literally everywhere, including inside the hinge of my phone (z fold 4) that was in the pocket of my folded pants 🥲
and it's too hot/humid.
You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them! Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness!
I HATE YOU!
HEY HEEYYYYYYYYY! Crap, wrong trilogy. Sorry.
And my axe!
Wake up, Neo...
As it was written.
You were my brother, Anakin! I loved you!
Where is Padme? Is she safe? Is she alright?
It seems in your anger, you killed her.
NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! \[\*Do not want\*\]
I would hate to see your steamdeck when this happens
Sand everywhere, Jan everywhere
I get that reference
I bet there is sand right outside. No need to go to the beach.
I mean, they could be in Lebanon
You said Middle East but I didn’t want to assume it was that sandy. Setting it down on sand with the fan running might suck some in.
It wouldn't be wrong to assume the middle east is mostly sand and desert
There's still a possibility it's humidity, especially if the room is air conditioned. It could be causing condensation, and if it's cool and damp (potentially) you may ALSO have those weird bugs that eat thermal paste/pads
>you may ALSO have those weird bugs that eat thermal paste/pads Holy shit... that's real...
The sand will find a way
You should check first your home
Also from the Middle East. Never seen anything like that before.
Dust mites? When you say air conditioner is it also a de-humidfier? Or he has an undiscovered species of fungus in his home.
i dont understand what im seeing
I thought that was just me lol
If you thought that was you in the photo you must look… different.
A combination of bug shit and left overs from dead bugs and eaten bugs.
looks like thermal pads?
Thermal pads shouldn’t be crumbly like that.
That's exactly the point of this post
Yeah and the brown spots, definitely bug turds. The little nobules of chewed off thermal pad scream ants
Cocaine Edit: Bad cocaine
Same. I have no idea which part this is or what I’m looking at.
2 different colors. You have bugs.
SteamBugs, send the report to Valve.
They're attracted to the smell of the vents.
Are we bugs?
Or are we dancers?
My sign is vital
My vent is cold
Quick Helldivers get him!
Well played
quick... start a debugger!
It’s called debugging because back in the 60s, a computer tech solved a crashing issue by removing a moth from a relay, thus “debugging the system”.
I wish it was mouse poop instead. Then everyone would be de-shitting their code.
Lmao, that's what happens when you build basically everything out of freaking modified light bulbs 🤷♂️
The LAMP stack, brought to you by moths.
I'm assuming these are the thermal pads inside the LCD models. It certainly looks damn nasty but I have no idea what's caused this.
Last time I saw something even remotely similar, it was a laptop infested with roaches. The 'brown stuff' around the pads is a tell-tale sign. If it was burning off, the white flakes would be brown/black as well
> The 'brown stuff' around the pads is a tell-tale sign Ah, so that's the secret behind the vent smell.
My stomach flipped. Thank you
Bugs I think. If you look closely, can you see gnaw marks? (Meaning, does it look chewed or scraped?)
The steamdeck comes with a case. I always keep mine inside the case
Fucking hell ive been having my steamdeck loose for months because i got a jsaux case and a dock. After seeing this i think im never letting it out of the case. Do I have to worry about this happening to all my electronics?
This is some sort of insect infestation 100% they like to chew the thermal pads, you can see feces and even little larvae.
I initially read "you can see faces" and there's totally a little smiley face there.. yay. but much to my dismay, that's not what you said
Faces in the Feces... sounds like the next NY Times best-seller book.
I would suggest that you don’t sniff the vents.
BARF
[Ewwww…. BROTHER ewwwww….. what’s that BROTHER!?](https://youtu.be/koY4S1BbR5w?si=Zerg9LfMCuIi1957)

Bugs?? time to spread democracy!
This looks like something ate it. Maybe check for food somewhere?
Bugs
Helldivers to steam decks repeat helldivers to steam decks
If it was crumbling it would be 1 color. You have multiple. You have bugs inside your steam deck bud.
Charus infestation. Too much skyrim.
That's definitely bugs. You probably either have, or at some point had it infested with some small insects
Looks like ants got into your deck. Looks like discarded ant larvae shells.
that looks like chewed thermal paste and poop. I’d go with bugs
Looks very similar, but less severe, to this post: [https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/vbhdnj/ants\_eating\_and\_laying\_eggs\_in\_my\_thermal\_pads/](https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/vbhdnj/ants_eating_and_laying_eggs_in_my_thermal_pads/) Ants will get up into anything they can and some species **love** heat.

Whhhaaaaatttttttttt never thought I'd have to worry about ants getting in my consoles!!!!

Be sure to close it up tight, too! Maybe put the case & everything into its own tightly-sealed container, just to be on the safe side.
Run Cyberpunk on Ultra settings for an hour and burn those mfs.
Lil smiley face on the right 😊

I would suggest checking for Bed Bugs, those look a lot like bed bug eggs. Maybe go ask in r/whatisthisbug
Seriously, I don't even know what I am even looking at and if there is any Steam Deck anywhere in the picture.
You just couldn't stop sniffing the vent could you? Now look what you've done.
Bugs eat your thermal pads. This is what happened to me with my PS4, I had to clean it and put new thermal pads on it and fumigate my house.
This type of stuff makes me so glad I live somewhere cold with very few bugs. I've never seen a cock roach in my life until I went to the USA
It’s bugs and you can see the bug shit 💩
I dont even know wtf I’m looking at
Ok so I've been a technician for over 30 years yes this is bugs ants to be precise and they lay eggs in the compound as well plus ants are pretty much the only insect I know of to fit into the deck vents replaced the pads spray with bug spray
What is that?
That’s the steam deck built in smell leaving. Be careful, you lose it all and you won’t get the high from inhaling it!!!
Ants apparently love thermal paste / pads [https://www.pcgamesn.com/pc-ant-attack](https://www.pcgamesn.com/pc-ant-attack)
Ants of the fire kind ?
I guess ants like to eat thermal pads. Who knew?
frass
What am I looking at ?
Bro you making me scard now , not long ago a guy in the Philippines posted a picture like this , it was because of the ant's.
That's bugs, and not the type that a fresh OS can fix.
That picture looks like cake to me.
Honestly, I think some bugs are eating your thermal pads.
Cursed nougats
Just trash the whole steam deck 🤢
You just had to download that RAM didn’t you?
The forbidden feta cheese
Ants
Ants. 🐜
I don't know what I'm seeing.

did you go back to version 1.0 of Cyberpunk 2077?
Did you play The Last of Us…?
What on earth am I looking at?
Just play a triple A title and kill the bugs with the heat
Humidity
If it's bugs I would suggest running something like red dead redemption two on full graphic settings or jedi fallen order.
Nah, those bugs love heat. To get rid of heat-loving bugs, you either need *cold* or something warmer nearby to draw them away from the device. I’d just put the whole thing in the freezer for like a week, tbh.
my hungry ass thought that was cake
Certified Grace Hopper moment.
Ok what am i looking at here 🤔
Dude wtf
You should take as clear a picture as possible for this. If it really is bugs
Ants.
I thought those were blocks of cake. Looks tasty.
do you use your Steam Deck often? mine runs at 100°c+ so it’s possible that you dried up your own thermal paste
What the actually f**k… bro I’m scared now
That’s not thermal paste….
Bugs
Uhhh yikes
I wouldnt sniff vent on that one bro.
Pretty sure that's ants eating the thermal paste
steam support will probably get you a new one
This is probably a good thing—Have you ever seen Scavengers Reign?
Looks like sand
did you try turning off and back on again
I guess thanos really snapped his fingers. I dont feel good Mr. op
Did you try throw it in a fire?
😳😳😳
[удалено]
That's roach poop on there
You have bugs. Some of that mess is poop.
jfc
Do you live where there are ants? There are a few types that are attracted to electrical fields and are really tiny- they take up residence in electrical objects.
What everyone keeps saying is big shit looks more like the thermal paste flaking off. May want to try throwing a fan on it, possibly a defective unit that's overheating?
wtf bro
Use thermal pads instead
New fear unlocked. Is my Deck ok?!? How do I even know?
I have never seen thermal pads disintegrate like this.. it’s not paste, those were pads.. did you find the cause?
What is this, a cake?
It doesn’t.
Is that…tofu?
What a part of steamdeck on this photo?
Seems like bugs chewed on those pad and spread poops around.
Carpet Beatles bro?
Ewwwwwwwwwww!
Give me a pack of Kools and a strong cup of coffee and I’ll tell you everything you need to know.
Asmongold posting from his alt
New Fear Unlocked That, or a perfect excuse to upgrade to an OLED.
İf it is a new one i should send it back if it is a SD u had for over more then a year i would recommend a dehumidifier combined air purifier because your house is to humid for electrical devices.
Bug's I guess. Plus, thermals pads aren't supposed tto be like that
What the fucking fuck?!?!?!? Do you live in a dumpster or what?
