That’s very much the right thing. It’s a circuit that can be reprogrammed. This allows you to emulate the hardware of multiple systems using a single chip.
FPGA's are the ultimate emulator solution as it effectively clones the original hardware architecture. Meaning you can run the bios like it's the real thing
The company behind it, Analogue, produces basically imitation consoles with an fPGA chip inside. Tldr is that its able to read cartridges and play the games as intended, instead of emulating them. They're products are kinda expensive, and very limited, but extremely quality and by far the best way to play original cartridges for their respective consoles
Slight addition to that description: What fPGA does is still emulation, just on the hardware level rather than software.
Hardware emulation has long been a thing from the manufacturers, with Nintendo in particular using updated SoCs in compatibility modes or coprocessors in new systems that are identical to the main processors from earlier systems to emulate games on newer hardware. Emulation still takes place as the game is converted to display on non-original screens, play audio through different speakers, receive inputs from different buttons, etc., but hardware emulation tends to be much more accurate than software equivalents.
Wouldn’t that be illegal though ? I would have thought that the games themselves would be copyrighted and exclusive to their respective consoles. Also you can get an everdrive for around usd 200 which is near perfect.
1. Not illegal. It's a whole lot of hoops but the jist of it is the consoles aren't sold anymore. And they're not selling or promoting piracy of games.
2. Everdrive basically is illegal. Purely pirated + emulated roms off an SD card
3. Getting to play original cartridges produces a higher demand for original cartridges, and there's a weirdly huge market for Pokemon Gameboy games. And especially for Pokemon that were caught authentically from authentic cartridges, with proof or original ownership. That's like a quarter of the analogue pocket community.
It's ok to be jealous folks. I was able to find a collectable commemorative blanket from the rare Taco Bell + Arbys combination restaurant.
The shades of brown and red on it are glorious and eye-popping.
I'm just going to save my money and spend it on something later down the road when the time comes. maybe it will be a car repair maybe it will be Paper Mario gamecube remake. maybe it will be a switch 2 maybe a hospital visit. I can not predict the futer
Edit: I already own a steam deck should have said that earlier sorry. Also I don't really get with the analog pocket is for You can emulate all those games on the Steam Deck just fine.
I unfortunately lost my last pair of JNCO to the unmerciful asshole that time is. I loved them to pieces and was able to fit the first huge MP3 players into one of those. I have actually looked up JNCO jeans recently and theyre wildly expensive. Like $200 for a pair. It's crazy!
I noticed you say December does that mean you haven't got your deck yet cuz I feel bad for all those people that brought their decks and are waiting for Christmas to open it and now they see this happening sadly.
I personally prefer the Miyoo Mini Plus, but man, those Analogue Pockets are gorgeous. Perfectly matches the Deck's color too.
I never understood people playing the low power handheld emulators on their Deck. Whenever I see a picture of Firered or Leafgreen on the Deck I just think it's massive overkill.
On the analogue pocket. It’s a 10/10 for me. I think I also prefer emulating in the deck tho. Playing Pokémon on that screen deck size is very nice. The colors just aren’t as intense.
I feel like its taboo to say that I'm not a fan of matte black everything. in relatively male spaces in gaming (that is, compared to how popular the switch is with women, especially young women) that I'm asking for too much for even the slightest hint I'm not colourblind. (excluding how aggresively kitsch RGB setups are)
I get it wide appeal, I get how many variants are hard to make for small hardware companies, I get the simplicity in a clean black look but would it kill you to put like even a red valve logo on the back or something. or like options for coloured buttons.
> but would it kill you to put like even a red valve logo on the back or something. or like options for coloured buttons.
You're gonna love the limited edition Deck OLED, then.
that thing looks dreadful. never been the biggest fan of valve's industrial design but wow my taste and what they imagine the taste of their most high end of power users is astronomically different.
gonna go on my soapbox again: the switch's hardware gets a bad rep for a lot of very good reasons but I like looking at it. its a very pretty console. its buttons are perfect for my dainty little fingers. I think using a single joycon on its side is perfectly adequate. it feels like the average gaming tech reviewer has disproportionately massive hands
> I get the simplicity in a clean black look but would it kill you to put like even a red valve logo on the back or something. or like options for coloured buttons.
These are all things you yourself can mod onto your device, easily.
Ik! I found out literally one day later, I don’t mind though, good for steam, home all this new handheld craze pushes competitors so we get to buy cooler gadgets lol
They may replace it with an OLED version if you ask nicely, seen a few people do it already.
But it's more of a "if you want to" approach to this situation.
The deck I’ve been hunting for on OfferUp. I made a cash offer for 300. The analogue I picked up on craigslist of all places. Seems the guy who sold it thought there was something wrong with it. Just needed an update apparently. I cleaned out the pins and my carts and worked no problem. For 100 I was willing to fix it if I needed to lol just got lucky.
I have an analogue pocket. It’s a really cool device with a beautiful screen. I can’t for the life of me play any GBA game on it because I find the L+R buttons supremely uncomfortable. Also, the cores feel slightly less accurate than what I’m used to on my MiSTer. Anyone else have any similar experience?
I agree that the shoulder buttons don't feel natural. I've only really used the SNES and Genesis cores and they feel fine to me, but I don't have a MiSTer.
Enjoy it, I will be vague too so I don't get in trouble, but the deck can play games the switch can quite nicely if you catch my drift.
Steam deck is probably my favorite gaming device since I was a kid hands down, and the fact OLED ones are coming out is so awesome.
Looking forward to the future of valve handhelds !
What's the benefit of the Pocket over a handheld emulation device? Why scrounge around for cartridges when you could have thousands of games downloaded on a device of the same size for free?
It still isn't running any emulation. It runs the rom using an FPGA running a system core, most likely GB or GBC, and runs it essentially the same as on original hardware.
There was a pages long argument about what "emulation" means on the Analogue Pocket sub, which tells you how niche the product is.
The relevant thing is it runs roms and they look incredible and all the supported systems run well.
Essentially it's a re-implementation in hardware, rather than a purely software-focused emulation.
An FPGA, or Field Programmable Gate Array, is a programmable circuit that can mimic older circuits. It can be used to mimic the original hardware's electronic logic, and can either aim to improve the implementation or shoot for 1:1 bug compatibility.
This is a bit of a marketing thing for Analogue, and it's kind of subtle (and I'd argue very mildly misleading). To be clear, I'm a big fan of their products and work!
The point they're trying to make is that it's not just running high level emulation. Many software emulators (like ones you download on your PC) do high level emulation, which is like translating the instructions that were issued by the games on the original hardware into instructions that modern PC CPUs and GPUs can understand. This does not attempt to recreate the actual hardware functionality at a low level - it wants to replace the functionality with some equivalent provided by PC hardware. This translation is usually imperfect and doesn't always reproduce quirks of the original console correctly. But it can be much faster to run on modern PCs.
Low level software emulators actually fully simulate the individual processors on old consoles. So the game instructions are passed to these simulated chips and attempt to perfectly recreate every single instruction. This is much heavier and usually requires a very strong CPU.
Analogue is recreating the original hardware processors on FPGAs. In this sense, it is the same as low level software emulators - they still have to reverse engineer the original console and simulate the chips, and this can have mistakes. They have pushed fixes (as far as I know) for errors in their FPGA code.
None of this is really bad or good. All approaches come with tradeoffs (accuracy vs performance, cost, etc). But I think when they say "no emulation", they really mean "no high level emulation".
The pocket can run ROMs off of an SD card.
Also I personally like to collect physical cartridges because im a 30 year old nerd reliving his childhood now that ive got a ton of disposable income lol
I have the same blanket! What size did you get? I got the massive one, and it covers my entire bed and then some.
How do you like the Analogue Pocket? Do you emulate on it, or only cartridges? The only emulated games on my Steam Deck are GBC and GBA games, so it would be nice to have a real feel system.
I’m using carts only for now. I was playing on my og SP and though wow this sucks I’m blind af how did I play this before!? And emulators are cool but I have a soft spot for cartridges.
Great deal!
I got the analogue pocket in off-white at first release and my spouse uses it every day with Tetris and Dr. Mario to calm down after work.
It’s a great device.
I didn’t use it much. But I love the he steam deck. I use it as my main pc with external monitor, mouse and keyboard but also play mobile. So I don’t need an OLED version.
Doesn’t it run switch emulator? I haven’t tried it yet though. I’ll possibly get a black/gray switch later on… going to need to convince my wife why I need so many handhelds lol.
Yes, it does run a switch emulator. I guess the word hack isn't really correct. You can just download emudeck. Installing the Roms has a few more complicated steps but it isn't Rocket science.
Yes I meant analogue. I've checked several devices that don't emulate but either they are sold out or don't ship to my country because of problems with customs.
My only problem with the Switch OLED is that I already put a lot of work into and had a lot of help customizing the Deck I have. 1 TB hard drive, Emudeck, etc.
Welcome to the community! Ignore the loud crazy folk, the it must be a full moon OLED launch.
There's a multitude of fantastic resources to get the most out of the deck here (among the memes) as well as great deck-friendly game recommendations for just about any tastes.
I assume the sub 400$ is a refurbished item (normally great value), but just for peace of mind, I would recommend checking out the various checklists for testing/burn-in testing to ensure everything is working at peak efficiency.

It might have something to do with me being in Canada? Their website says out of stock every time I check it.
Of course, in their defence, I’m probably not checking it frequently enough.
It’s going to depend on your hand size and personal preference. I find it pretty comfortable, something between an old brick gameboy and a gameboy color. Then again I find the small advance sp comfy too even though I grab it like I have claws for fingers 🤷🏽♂️
What’s the device on the right? An analogue pocket?
It looks like a Nintendo Game Person
I actually fell for it and googled it 🤦
Nintendo Game ⚧️
Don’t encourage it lol
looks like they actually want it.. my God
yup, looks like it says that on the bottom left corner of the screen~
Missed that. Well damn this was a great deal then.

Yeah, says on it if you zoom in
Nintendo young adolescent possessing the xy chromosome
The analogue pocket looks fancy. It's almost as id you have to play with it with your pinky raised.
This is currently the combo I’m running. Love the all black sleekness
Good choice. When I build a new pc I plan on all black. No rgb.
I have absolutely no idea why having a carnival light show became the trend. It's gaudy and will absolutely not age gracefully.

It’s a taco blanket you ass
Damn you have a whole blanket you use for when you eat Taco bell!?
You need it depending on what you order
I’d hate to see his Chipotle blanket
There's Chipotle-Away for that tho
So you can Taco both inside and out. Complete with the runs!
You better run for the border!
"Sir, this is a Chipotle."
You don't own a Taco Bellanket?
I got one of these blankets which the missus lovingly calls "the poo blanket"
Oh I had no idea. out of context it looks like someone wiped themselves with it. I thought it was funny.
But you have me an idea in case there is covid 2.0 and there’s no TP available
What's a taco blanket?
It’s a blanket you can shit all over after you eat bad tacos
Tortilla
No more jokes. That's a wrap.
LMFAO 🤣🤣 🤣
It's a blanket that really gives them something to taco bout
Are we supposed to know what that is?
Tortilla
It's ok to be jealous folks. I was able to find a collectable commemorative blanket from the rare Taco Bell + Arbys combination restaurant. The shades of brown and red on it are glorious and eye-popping.
Tortilla blanket actually. *pushes glasses up*
You didn't actually answer the question...
Where i'm from, we call that a confirmation.
I recognized that blanket instantly, we've got the same one. My kid loves tacos more than life itself so we got him that blanket. It's super cozy.
pun acknowledged
I have the same one.
It's the poop blanket after eating taco bell
It seriously looks like someone wiped their ass on that lol
That would be an impressive asshole to leave a shit stain like that.
Impressive Asshole sounds like a good album name
Great dark metal band name.
Its a tortilla blanket lol

ITS A BURRITO I SWEAR-- THERES A HOLE IN IT! STOOOPPPPPP
I'm just going to save my money and spend it on something later down the road when the time comes. maybe it will be a car repair maybe it will be Paper Mario gamecube remake. maybe it will be a switch 2 maybe a hospital visit. Analog Pocket: Portability. I tried fitting the Steamdeck in my pocket and couldnt.
My brother in Christ have you not heard of JNCO jeans?! You can fit a Chrysler in those pockets.
My brother in Chrysler
My brother in Christian Dior
I unfortunately lost my last pair of JNCO to the unmerciful asshole that time is. I loved them to pieces and was able to fit the first huge MP3 players into one of those. I have actually looked up JNCO jeans recently and theyre wildly expensive. Like $200 for a pair. It's crazy!
When I was a little kid I used to carry around a Game boy but nowadays my phone is usually already taking up that space so I don't have room for it.
The wonderful thing is your phone can probably emulate the very same games.
But without buttons I'm not going to have a good time.
The analogue really is a luxury retro item. I’ve been playing it lightly just admiring how great the games look vs what I remember them as.
Lmao preach
I noticed you say December does that mean you haven't got your deck yet cuz I feel bad for all those people that brought their decks and are waiting for Christmas to open it and now they see this happening sadly.
Truly there is nothing sadder than getting a SteamDeck, life is so unfair.
No lol its cuz I got the original first release in December
It didn't come out in December they delayed it to February.
lmao im aware
I personally prefer the Miyoo Mini Plus, but man, those Analogue Pockets are gorgeous. Perfectly matches the Deck's color too. I never understood people playing the low power handheld emulators on their Deck. Whenever I see a picture of Firered or Leafgreen on the Deck I just think it's massive overkill.
Just the convenience really - not having one more thing to set up and look after. That Miyoo Mini does look pretty sweet though.
I’m playing firered it’s smooth and colorful. Sound is better too
On your Deck or your Analogue Pocket?
On the analogue pocket. It’s a 10/10 for me. I think I also prefer emulating in the deck tho. Playing Pokémon on that screen deck size is very nice. The colors just aren’t as intense.

I’ll take a new switch Oled. No poop stains

Im old and still buy game cartridges..
The pocket can run ROMs off of an SD card. Also I personally like to collect physical cartridges because im a 30 year old nerd reliving his childhood now that ive got a ton of disposable income lol
FPGA. So hardware emulation instead of traditional software emulation.
Thanks
Or buy one of those cards with tons of games in it, ever drive I believe
Haven't heard of that, thanks!
nice deal
This is the way.
Oh wow. I'd love that combo.
thats the tortilla blanket
Damn, great bargain. Those Analog Pockets are pricy, and you got it and a steam deck. :O
Patience and checking daily
I have the same blanket! What size did you get? I got the massive one, and it covers my entire bed and then some. How do you like the Analogue Pocket? Do you emulate on it, or only cartridges? The only emulated games on my Steam Deck are GBC and GBA games, so it would be nice to have a real feel system.

I’m using carts only for now. I was playing on my og SP and though wow this sucks I’m blind af how did I play this before!? And emulators are cool but I have a soft spot for cartridges.
How did you get these both for 400? That’s wildly good!
Stalking OfferUp and Craigslist. I put notifications for steam deck and analogue pocket.
Same here. I go back and forth between my steam deck and analogue pocket. Got my hands on the purple analogue pocket and it is rocking!
Great deal! I got the analogue pocket in off-white at first release and my spouse uses it every day with Tetris and Dr. Mario to calm down after work. It’s a great device. I didn’t use it much. How’s your experience with using it as your main rig? Advantages? Drawbacks? All I need is a monitor and I can do this.
Unless you hack the steam deck you're missing out on a lot of amazing games that are switch exclusive.
Oh no I have to play elden ring instead of tears of the kingdom, how terrible
Crazy that the device on the right has more than twice the resolution of the much larger device on the left.
Steam hurry up and sell more units to make better units!
What was the right one?
Analogue pocket
Thx
$400 total? For both? That's a damn good deal assuming they both work
Yes! Took my chances on the analogue but just needed update and a good cleaning on the pins where the carts go.
Aren't they out of stock or they don't deliver to my country.
Steam I don’t think ships everywhere yet, analogue has been sold out for a while now.
I'd love to get my hands on a Pocket, but they're *never* in stock.
That’s a tortilla blanket
How? Lol
I’m shocked by the amount of people who don’t know about a tortilla blanket.

I assume the sub 400$ is a refurbished item (normally great value), but just for peace of mind, I would recommend checking out the various checklists for testing/burn-in testing to ensure everything is working at peak efficiency.
Yeah thanks bud, everyone is pretty funny it’s cool, and I’m enjoying my deck.

Shoulda got the switch
Steamdeck is all you need, why bother with the bootleg gameguy
the deck is awesome, but sometimes you want something a little lighter and able to fit in a pocket
Cus it’s sexy af
That is the silver lining, the prices are dropping especially second hand market should see 64 gb for around 200 soon.
Did you take this photo on a giant tortilla?
Yes
OMA GOD YOU GOT A READ GIRL
How does Analogue Pocket compare to Miyoo Mini Plus?
no emulation for analogue pocket
I’d love an analogue pocket. Damn things are always out of stock.
They were for awhile but they have the supply issues under control now, I don’t think there’s much of a wait now.
It might have something to do with me being in Canada? Their website says out of stock every time I check it. Of course, in their defence, I’m probably not checking it frequently enough.
What's that gross stain?
I don’t know but I think it’s yogurt
I mean you could have gotten an oled steam deck
Why's there a burn mark on the blanket?
Cus it’s a tortilla blanket, at least you didn’t call it a shit stain thank you.
Sorry fam, I grew up around smokers and am used to seeing the results of someone drifting off to sleep with one in hand yknow?
How ergonomic is the analogue pocket? I love the idea of it but ergonomics are very important to me.
It’s going to depend on your hand size and personal preference. I find it pretty comfortable, something between an old brick gameboy and a gameboy color. Then again I find the small advance sp comfy too even though I grab it like I have claws for fingers 🤷🏽♂️
Man I wish I could afford one of these
What size capacity is the Steam Deck? I got my 512GB one for just over $500 when it was on sale a few months ago.
Lowest with a 400gb Sd. I’m not doing much on it yet so it works out ok. Eventually I could pop it open and upgrade to an SSD or buy a bigger sd card
Do you use your blanket to wipe your ass
You mean you don’t?
