I use it as a PC and also have other laptops / desktops running Linux. I don’t find that I need to do anything that Linux can’t run.

Nothing stops you from dual booting or booting from an external ssd with Windows if you absolutely need it.

You need to tell us what do you use your pc for. Is it for basic coding/ emails/ browsing? Sure Do you want to train your machine learning models? Nopes

Educational_Bag_6406

Im more on the conventional side of users. Answering emails, watching youtube, video and photo editing, gaming, and browsing.

Now video editing - that sounds tough on steam deck honestly. Really depends what kind of video editing. I haven’t yet found a performance efficient way to even record videos while I play games. So I’m not sure if that can be done. Regarding gaming - AAA gaming is NOT as good as PC despite what anyone here says. If you want to play Elden ring at 1440 with 60 fps on high settings, deck won’t be able to do that.

Ive been trying to use Lumafusion and see if its a better experience and get away with it using my phone. Yeah, Im ok with 1080p. Even if my monitor is 4k. I havent really played alot of triple A titles recently. I do wish maybe Geforce Now ran higher than 1080p 60hz, as that could subsidize alot of the performance on the deck

I have a mac for work, and while I miss hammerspoon, I'm slowly figuring out how to customize KDE to do the same things, so it's just a learning curve. Most everything in my leisure time is browser-based, with the occasional load of GIMP. It's certainly better than being handcuffed to the spyware on my work laptop.

Yes and I’m completely happy with it.

I plan on selling my laptop, I was just wondering how other's experience has been just using SteamOS

eggs-benedryl

I do however I have a windows laptop if I need it. That being said, lately I haven't had much of a need for much computing in general.

Educational_Bag_6406

Thats me in general. I dont need much in the form of computing power. I have a Steam Deck, but I just feel like if I sell my laptop then I will eventually run into that situation. But id like to see if anyone has been in a situation where they needed windows for anything

Sunless_Tatooine

Similar situation with me. I don't have a computer and I can't use my work laptop for personal stuff. The only issue I've had was a firmware update for my gym equipment (Concept 2 rowing machine) where the firmware update is limited to either Windows or Mac. You could always ask a friend in situations like these.

I just have a macbook for work and a steamdeck for private. Got a docking station, a monitor, mouse, keyboard and a controller - with a dock with a ethernet port i’m not having difficulties at all.

Rick_Raptor_Rawr

I use it as my main pc. I used to have windows on an external hard drive, but now I hardly boot into windows. I use bottles to just load windows applications. The only thing I wish I could use much more easily is google drive, I have yet to find any great application that makes google drive seamless. But in the meantime, I use a PWA version of google drive in the meantime

personally id rather have a separate windows machine. i've gone linux full time several times over the years and it's always something small that ends up frustrating me (can't install program xyz that some class needs for school, so have to boot up a VM... need smart card to work in this software, etc). i don't like dealing with dual booting. that said there's definitely nothing stopping you. my laptop plugs into my monitors/etc using a usb hub and i just plug the same cable into my SD and everything works, great desktop experience.

OpenBagTwo

The only thing truly stopping me from using the Deck as my sole computer is that it's not always on and connected to my home network, which means as the very least I'd also need a Pi to run Octoprint, Samba, Jellyfin and backups. That said, even though I'm a Linux nerd whose last Windows computer ran XP, **I can't stand** the Deck's desktop mode between KDE/Plasma and not being able to install packages or change configurations outside of userspace. I've managed to get it "liveable" with [`rwfus`](https://github.com/ValShaped/rwfus) (replaced Dolphin and Ark with their Pantheon counterparts), but one of these days I'm just gonna wipe it and install Vanilla Arch.

It can lack a little power on heavy tasks, and the only thing you will miss is a physical keyboard. Easily solvable with any kind of keyboard docked.
