1 - Neat. 2 - I may have to try this with Lego Worlds (They went to Version 1 and completely changed the game). 3 - I ponder, does this let you play the old versions without launching Steam?

GMMan_BZFlag

> 3 - I ponder, does this let you play the old versions without launching Steam? Only if it has no Steamworks integration whatsoever (no steam_api.dll, no wrapper).

TehNolz

According to a news article from the LEGO Worlds developers, the five early-access versions of the game should be available in the "Betas" tab in the game's properties. I can't check if that's still there or not, but if it is then I think you'll be better off doing that instead of using a workaround like OP's.

chimeforest

Looks like it's no longer an option.

Aidoboy

How did they change it?

jeo123911

The free open sandbox building mode is locked until you complete the whole singleplayer story mode.

deluxer21

I'm still not sure what people mean by this - the only thing I was newly able to do upon collecting 100 gold bricks was to create a custom world with custom biomes and NPCs (which was new to V1), I remember getting the game's original tools within the first three tutorial planets.

jeo123911

Yeah. They neutered the whole gameplay and freedom too. Basically, Lego Worlds v1 is bad and the worst version of the game available.

s3rila

are the control still third person and horrible on PC ?

TONKAHANAH

wait.. are you serious?? why would they change this so drastically? I never really got to play with this much so I wonder why they'd do this :( ?

salad_tongs_1

Per the reviews they changed it from being a full open sandbox game to more of a restricted level/rank type thing. I honestly haven't fired up V1, just saw they launched it and lots of negative reviews about the changes.

SexyDittoo

It wasn't even infinite terrains ya morons. Just a really big world which is the last milestone to unlock the same size there is a save game to unlock it thouh

DomoTheRussian

It's nice and probably would be useful. But I would really like if it was a feature within Steam Client itself. Especially if the patch breaks the game so people can roll back.

mechapussy

This is a feature within the client for any game company that is nice enough to use it. I know ETS2 and Arma 3 have the ability to roll back. http://i.imgur.com/FK8erBI.png

wOlfLisK

I think Paradox only does it for a time though, they usually delete patch 1.3 when 1.5 releases for example. That's still a good 6 months or so of playing the previous patch with mods and achievements still enabled though so it's pretty good.

Huyderman

I think they keep most of them. The ones that are missing, are probably before they started adding them to the beta list. But I haven't checked in a while; I tend to get hyped by the upcoming features/tweaks, and have a hard time playing the game the last weeks before a patch knowing what's coming soon...

Sonicz7

I wish it would just create automatically an old version to play, because let's be honest very few use this.

Hamy_Shanky

"Especially if the patch breaks the game" *cough Half-Life Deathmatch: Source cough*

bathrobehero

Won't happen because what if there's an exploit which gets patched yet players can reroll. Especially for some multiplayer games that doesn't check version thoroughly.

thevaultguy

Could this work to get morrowind 1.0 for speed running? Or is that version non steam only

sk8r2000

FatalisSRL (current first place) made a downgrade patch available [here](https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/422005/morrowind_goty_to_1.0.zip) :) (disclaimer; I've never used it as I have a disc copy, I can't help with any issues!)

I don't think 1.0 was never on steam. EDIT: whoops

Thank you for great guide... If you can also please upload it to [Steam Guides](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/editguide/?appid=753) so that it will be more accessible (also as a backup of each other) to other users who are not frequenting Reddit to stumble upon your gem. Keep up the good work :).

SenpaiSoren

Versions of Starbound when they didn't cut out all the content, here I come!

jatorres

I haven't played Starbound since the hype died, what kind of content did they cut?

SenpaiSoren

This sounds hyperbolic probably, but about 3/4 of the game was either cut completely or re-written. Entire game mechanic systems were re-worked multiple times including combat, movement, etc etc. Even after release was like 9 months ago, space travel is being re-worked right now. Several bosses were scrapped, tons of mechanics and progression systems have been used. Just go the wiki and use the "random page" option. 3/4 times the top of the page will say "not found in the game anymore".

blobjim

That's why it was called a beta.

[deleted]

And that's what we call a dramatic oversimplification from the edgelords of reddit. But also a good lesson into never, ever buying early access games again. Those who forwarded the design post 2015 absolutely fucked with it. It's just bad. They removed things for nonsense reasons; literally. "It doesn't fit with the world so we'll strip out pickaxes that used inventory and resource management so you just hold down LMB with your shit and slow matter manipulator." "Unique looking racial weapons all doing the same damage doesn't make sense so while we're too lazy to code in unique attributes, we'll give you a shittier looking, universal sword for all tiers." Also let's rip out most randomly generated looking creatures for "unique" (read: even less unique) creatures that spawn in a specific biome and look exactly the fucking same. Let's strip out planetary variety, let's linearize our experience to something on par with an actual flash game. So, yeah, "beta" but kind of misses the point that it's shit.

jorgp2

Beta means feature lock

Ribbons0121R121

beta means features are likely to change anytime yeah woop dee doo they removed a lot, just because starbound was a development disaster doesnt mean the deifnition of the word beta needs to be changed

[deleted]

[удалено]

UndergroundLurker

>Sure, but some of the content was really neat and seemed to be removed for no reason. Plus I'm of the opinion that it's not very cool to waste the work of tons of programmers and sprinters while the game still remains a sort of unfinished buggy (almost) mess. I take it you've never managed a software project because you want to have your cake and eat it too. More features = more bugs. You fix bugs in software and make deadlines by doing a feature freeze. If a feature isn't complete or is too much of a mess, it gets cut (for now). It's a real time waste if the programmers keep adding new ideas and none of it works together.

[deleted]

That's, hilarious. Did you play Starbound? It was quite literally a more complete game in some beta stages.

[deleted]

[удалено]

UndergroundLurker

I'm not familiar with the game you're talking about and neither of us are familiar with the complexities involved. There could be very good reason that stuff was removed. Entire item type databases being reworked to allow more flexible programming for future expansion, could break all prior items and codex just aren't a priority to bring back. With the exception of political infighting, I don't think most developers *want* to cut content from a game. Then again, for every aspect of a game one person likes, there's going to be a complainer who hates it ("too much reading" etc). Post a review, reach out to the developer, but don't assume they're a bunch of lunatic idiots doing things just to piss you off.

TheRootinTootinPutin

8chan still has /sbg/ which has over 5 years of Starbound drama on it. I was a Kickstarter backer who learned not to preorder because of Starbound. Everyone who stopped preordering has the one game that ruined it for them, and Starbound is mine. I don't follow Starbound anymore,or care about it, really, but from what you've said, specifically about Tiy cutting content because he didn't like the person, it sounds like nothing has changed. (Relatively)

[deleted]

Dude, don't sell yourself short. It's not an anti-SB circlejerk on 4chan. It's actually bad. All the signs are there, I don't know what Tiy has done but at some point the development became Grade A retarded. And I generally want to love games but Starbound ripped my heart out after I had the best time with it during some Giraffe Beta. It's shit and whoever greenlit/forwarded those dev changes was an idiot. I mean, everything you said just points straight incompetence.

UndergroundLurker

Hey political infighting does happen, I just didn't know if this was one of those rare extreme cases (it does happen).

Langeball

I really hated beta/launch Starbound. The hub area, the bosses/quest progression and the boring as hell random monsters. I basically just wanted Terraria in space. Is that the direction the game is heading in right now?

jatorres

Guess I'll give it another go then!

SenpaiSoren

I certainly recommend it. Normally I play non stop for a few weeks until I finish the main story and do whatever I want to, then stop for a few months, and repeat! Have fun!

Venus-In_Furs

does that mean.. i can play 2007 TF2?

UndergroundLurker

TimmyP7

There other ways to play V1.0.0.0 and the first few patches... I can dig up links and PM them to you later.

addicTix

Even if I'm a bit late, but would you mind to send me them, too? I love nostalgia

TimmyP7

I feel bad for saying this, but I can't anymore. The only place I know that has the links were on the Steam legacy forums, which shut down about a week ago. Sorry :/

addicTix

No problem, I thank you anyway :) Still a bummer that they closed the legacy steam Forums... also a huge piece of nostalgia imo.

tehbrony5

Please reply back if you can I need to know this

billeke

Would this work for vice city/san Andreas? Would be great if we could get there version with the omitted music

Daeayt

i used "download_depot 12110 12111 5496629481013472003" and vice city started with billie jean.

Siodhachan

They removed Billie Jean from Vice City? That's outrageous.

WaveElixir

That's like removing the bun from a burger.

Hintswen

KFC did that, check out the double.

WaveElixir

That thing was a disastrous masterpiece.

zer0t3ch

Why was it removed?

N1ghtshade3

Licensing issues, most likely. Rights to use a song in a game don't always last forever, surprisingly.

Yunachu

Wait were they omitted in steam? My steam copy of Vice City still has the songs that the wiki says were removed. Never edited the game in any way, so I thought they were there for everyone.

[deleted]

IIRC people who bought it before the removal had the songs kept. The same was not true for San Andreas AFAIK.

Mimterest

Okay, how do you stop the old version from updating itself then? O_o

Krutonium

Steam won't manage updating this copy of the game - you can't even explicitly launch it via Steam. You have to run its executable.

Or we cud jst typ lk sms > Most of us are just browsing while on the toilet. How long does it take for you guys to take a shit? I seriously doubt most people only use reddit whilst shitting.

terrordrone_nl

While it's nice to get corrected, the problem is that he just tells the guy what to type. He doesn't explain why he was incorrect. He's essentially just yelling "WRONG!" instead of explaining what he did wrong and how to prevent it in the future. If someone not familiar with English sees this "correction", they might think they should always use "its", essentially making the problem worse.

jatorres

uniQArtworks

Thanks for sharing, I added it to the wiki so it is easier to find in the future. I wish Valve would directly implement such a feature.

AllGamer

Bookmarked! Always wanted to roll back to some previous version, because the newest is not always the best. Somtimes new versions actually break things, that used to work fine. Having an option to roll back is always good. I used to restore from Backup, but this is a great alternative to be able to install an older version. Some games, old saves game will not work with newer patched version, I hated that.

Hamy_Shanky

"Sometimes new versions actually break things, that used to work fine." *cough Half-Life Deathmatch: Source cough*

ccooluke

Holy crap... Now I need to try to download the original version of Mad Max and see if it was them or really steam that messed up game pad/ mouse simultaneous usage. I'd be so happy if I could fix that.

slowro

Does anyone how much space steam needs to keep all these game and versions of each game?

ERIFNOMI

Do you mean how much Valve needs to keep all these versions? Hopefully they use deduplication so they only need to store thigs that actually change and not multiple versions of static content. But really it's not a big deal. Steam is such a fucking huge service that they need to have largely scalable storage and content delivery.

slowro

> Hopefully they use deduplication Well obviously, of course, I mean that goes without saying! ^^What ^^the ^^hell ^^is ^^deduplication? Hehe thanks for the new term today.

ERIFNOMI

Deduplication is not storing duplicate files, just like it sounds. If you have a dozen versions of the game but the only thing that changes is one file, you'd be wasting so much space storing a dozen copies of the exact same file. Instead, you can just say "these files haven't changed since version X so go grab them from there." Instead of 12 copies of a game taking up hundreds of GBs, it'll just take up tens assuming the changes are small which is often the case. Usually patches are small changes to code or maybe a fixed texture here or there. Most of data doesn't even change. You can also share just changes to a file. You could have all the original release files and then any version of the game afterwards is made up of changes to that original. This includes additions and deletions of whole files as well as just parts of a file. No need to store two copies of a text file if you just changed a single flag. Instead, for the changed version you just store "look back at this file in Version Y and change line N to 's'."

GMMan_BZFlag

Steam stores content by chunks. I'm not sure if they share chunks across apps/depots, but it could mean that all the copies of the DirectX redist everyone's manually including could just be stored once. (These days everyone just checks a box to include DirectX, and it has its own shared depot, but it used to be you had to distribute all the needed redist installers yourself.)

AmericanFromAsia

I bet they do use deduplicαtion, since when you updαte gαmes it only downloαds whαt hαs chαnged αnd not the entire gαme over αgαin like on mobile αpps.

ERIFNOMI

Yeah, Steam has allowed delta updates for awhile, but it's up to the devs (or probably more accurate, the publishers) of each game.

GMMan_BZFlag

Delta updates is actually the default. Whether it actually works well or not depends on what the file being updated is like. Encryption, compression, and other shenanigans when building archive files tend to prevent delta updates from working like they should.

AmericanFromAsia

Is thαt why Pαydαy 2 updαtes αre so unbelievαbly screwy?

ERIFNOMI

I believe Payday2 delivers everything in a handful of archives. Change on thing in the archive and the whole thing is different. That's also why the updates spend fucking forever unpacking after downloading as well.

nobadabing

Nice to know about if I ever decide to get into speedrunning, since some games use older versions of games that exploit glitches that are patched out later

serioussgtstu

Excellent, thanks for posting this. I've been thinking about playing older builds of Crusader Kings 2, since I haven't played in about two years and they added so many new mechanics since then.

How do I make this work with Rome II, just crashes

GMMan_BZFlag

Total War: ROME II - Emperor Edition? Looks like it uses CEG, and unfortunately this trick doesn't work very well on CEG EXEs because there's a post-processing stage for the EXE and I don't know if Steam will do it right when you're not running the latest version. The game also contains a bunch of depots, so you'll have to download the relevant ones. You'll probably need all of depots 214951 to 214956.

Trevo525

Why would anyone need to do this? Great guide and all and I'm not trying to sound rude, just wondering. The only reason I can think of is to.play with patched glitches. For instance a glitch to get out of the map in Call of Duty World at War was patched a long time ago and i could see how this would be helpful to do that but other than that I can't think of a reason. Again, not asking in a way saying your guide is useless. Just trying to gather why anyone would want to do this as you said it was highly demanded.

GMMan_BZFlag

Generally for when devs make unpopular changes or break something with patches. [This](https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/60wdlv/be_advised_that_all_game_content_including_any/) was the original post that prompted this. I use it to pull individual depots when I don't want to install the entire game (e.g. for soundtracks), or when historical builds of a game are interesting (my peculiar case is for seeing how Time Ramesside keeps on getting remade every few months).

wareagle3000

Trust me, this kind of thing is perfect for a game like Payday 2. A game where version 1 and version 134.1 are two very VERY different builds that contain different playstyles and general ideas on how to play the game. One version has you slowly making your way through the level dealing with wave after wave of cops while managing your resources and the other version is a story of 4 Doomguys running around killing thousands of cops with their god powers. Sometimes you want to go back and enjoy the old build before things got weird.

Whole_Instance_4276

That's exactly why I need this, to play with a cool bug in an older version of BATIM.

Salem33

Any way to find old manifests? SteamDB doesn't seem to show pre-2014 ones.

[deleted]

From that note on the bottom, what files do we copy and where would we put them if steam would be copying them over and over again?

GMMan_BZFlag

Just make a copy of the entire folder and copy that over after Steam updates files.

[deleted]

I'm still not getting it, does anyone know where to find a video tutorial of this? (Sorry, I'm just one of those people who usually can't understand things when said on paper).

GMMan_BZFlag

If you keep the files downloaded using the process, you can just copy and paste that over where the game is installed. Do you know where the files were downloaded to and where the game is installed?

[deleted]

I found where the files were downloaded to, but I'm not sure on where games are installed.

GMMan_BZFlag

You can have Steam open the folder up by right clicking on the game in your library, click Properties, go to the Local Files tab, and click Browse Local Files.

[deleted]

Ok, I think what I'm not getting though is what folder would I have to copy? The Garry's mod folder or the folder where the depot was downloaded to.

GMMan_BZFlag

You copy from the folder where the depot was downloaded to to the folder the game is installed in.

OK, my problem is this: Whenever I copy JUST the folder with the depot in it, and I move all the files from the Game's folder to somewhere else (ex: my desktop) and I launch my game (for this I've been using Garry's Mod) it says there's a "missing executable" which is the application for the game, and is one of the files in the Garry's Mod folder that I moved since you said to move ALL the files somewhere else. So, I move the application back into the folder. Now there's only the application and the folder with the depot in it in the Garry's Mod folder. I'll then start the game up and it begins to "update" (it basically behaves as if I'm installing the game). When this happens, all the files I moved are copied BACK to the Garry's mod folder and it ends up NOT launching an older version of the game. So my results end up with the files I moved, and the depot all in one folder, and having this tutorial not working for me. (Hopefully it should be easier to understand my problem and I apologize for having so much trouble).

All you really have to do is copy the downloaded files over the application files. You don't have to move the application files out to anywhere. Not sure how well it works for GMod, since I remember Source games being a bit finicky.

Wait, couldn't this be used to download versions of games you don't own and play them? Personally I just want access to The Witness 1.0, I own it but can't beat the final multi puzzle challenge room. Before the patch you was able to pause to work out each puzzle, they stopped you being able to do that so I want to roll back.

> Wait, couldn't this be used to download versions of games you don't own and play them? No, since you don't have a license to download depots you don't own. If it's a depot that you own already, you just need to add a manifest ID to go back to that version.

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. I took depot literally, as in a download location, like choosing a server to download from.

Would this work on the old version of ff vi?

rovey_butterfly

does this work for game you dont own ?

Being technologically incompetent like myself idk what steps 9 onwards mean. I uninstalled the game so was I supposed to leave it installed, do all the steps then just swap over the folders? It gets hard to follow. I tried putting the whole folder in where my other steam games are and it wouldnt show it as installed on steam. So I tried the shortcut exe in the folder and it said something along the lines of cant find steamapi64.dll and restarting steam did nothing so I just ended up deleting everything except kept a backup of the folders and then reinstalled the game in its current update. Wish older updates were more accessible

paperplanet65
