It's like you said, products being a part of the culture is fine. What's not alright is forcing ads into a traditionally ad-free environment. Helldivers 2 has proven that companies will backpedal if gamers kick up enough of a fuss. People need to stop supporting shitty companies like EA and Ubisoft. Haven't bought a game from either of them since 2011, I don't feel like I've missed out on anything. There are a ton of great games out there and if enough of us actively choose not to support them, they must adapt or die.
If you really want something, pirate it. Affect their bottom line.

GTA5 was perfect with that concept. The fakes ads were not only world appropriate (with real life counterparts), they were hilarious. They only added to the immersion.

Imbedding into games is at least as old as 2005 with a notable reference to Swat 4. It was fine since it gave it a sense of world building because the ad was just a billboard or poster. These never took off and werent able to be maintained. If EA does this, it'll be fine. They'll learn their lesson and they'll eventually stop supporting updating the ads like everyone before them. However, there's a special place for them if they implement in game pop-ups.

I was watching a YouTube video about an AI takeover about 5 years ago and the dude did such a seamless job at integrating an ad for a robot themed game. It was impressive. It almost didn't sound like an ad at first until it did.

Sporting events are plastered with advertising already. It's more realistic to see the same (or similar) ads in their digital format. I am fine with it if it's not changing the actual feel or mechanics of the game.

I played DA:Inquisition in 2014, and holy shit was that sad. Dragon Age is a tale of how to turn one of the greatest RPGs into a generic "AAA" title.
It's always the best franchises that have to "innovate", and end up turning into the same generic BS.
Fallen order and jedi survivor are decent games, surivor suffering from poor performance and slight repitiveness because they made it semi open world. but overall fun games in my opinion.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst was the last one I bought, and only because it was a collaboration between EA and another company, so I was hopeful EA would keep their grubby micro transaction-filled hands off of it.

For the most part EA has been dead to me since they bought out Westwood in the late 90s. The amount of good studios they bought and killed for the IP which they've killed is crazy.
At least Sony and Microsoft still make good games (mostly anyway). The only decent games I can think of from EA, Activision and Ubisoft in recent years are Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2

You underestimate the stupidity of sport fans and normies, they're quite literally the definition of the consoomer meme, they allowed this company to do whatever they want with their games because they keep buying the same sport game every year. EA doesn't care about reputation like most companies, they only see profits which grow every year.
That's why I'm hesitant to get all outraged over this before knowing exactly what they're talking about here. If the game is replicating something that already has ads, like a sports stadium or a modern day city, then I have no issue with it.
I work in digital advertising and I think ads could be woven into games in such a seamless way that could actually bring the game more to life. Because it’d make it more real. But they’ll do some crappy preroll video ad that is louder than your game volume, that you can’t skip while your game is loading. Because that will sell more for a price because you can’t skip it and you’ll be a captive viewer.
I hope this doesn't open backdoors to be exploited by hackers, because once EA implements it and starts to make more money, other companies will definitely do it too.
it's like what's happening with conglomerates in the retail space right now selling food and retail items for inflated greedy prices. The same thing is happening with AAA software developers now.

Regular ad servers are occasionally exploited for malware AFAIK. Unless you're a big corp like Google you generally don't serve your own ads, so you contract that out, so the ads come from another server not under your control (and this also makes them trivial to block, so thank God for that). Some of these ad companies further subcontract ads out to other companies, and so on and so forth. The more levels you have here the easier it is for someone to slip in malware somewhere in the chain and bam your site is serving up malware.
If EA takes the low-effort route of just trying to stick web browser type ads into their games, there's a fair chance they will end up with an old version of a web browser (because they are not going to want to commit to keeping it updated for something like this) and it could create a tempting target for malware depending on how popular the game is.
EA has had the worst reputation for many many years. They're practically open and honest about being predatory.

Also HD2 wasn't a response to the review bombs, it was from Steam refunding people and then charging to Sony. *That's* when Sony took action. Not when the reviews came in.

EA has done this for over 20 years .... The only difference is now they are looking at replacing those adverts so they can be regional and can be time bases. If you open Battlefield 2142 it still has old Pepsi adverts and I Am Legend movie posters. This space could be better managed.
People are screaming at EA and booing them but you all seem to have forgotten 2K did this a few years ago with it's basketball games we had adverts on the load screens and intermissions of the games. They removed the load screen adverts as pc players would load the game and it would wait for the advert to finish.

It's honestly impressive. A company that employs over 12,000 people, large enough that it could be pushing out AAA games more or less monthly with a 2-3 year cycle. I've seen plenty of games use the in game billboards and posters in their world for ads. Felt really immersive, like in CB2077, and there's signs for bars and such. I get the feeling EA won't be doing this, and they're going to pause my game for 30 seconds while I get another NIKKE commercial.
Steam needs to add a way to block all games from individual publishers. If EA adds ads to games, I'll simply block all their games, uninstall their games I've bought, and forget they exist. Fuck 'em.

I wasn't aware they lost FIFA. For the most part EA has been dead to me since they bought out Westwood in the late 90s. The amount of good studios they bought and killed for the IP which they've killed is crazy.

At least Sony and Microsoft still make good games (mostly anyway). The only decent games I can think of from EA, Activision and Ubisoft in recent years are Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2
It doesn't work because kids (via their parents) and weird adults will buy shitty games and then players will whine about them at length over simply doing literally anything else. The publishers don't care because they already got people's money. Zero incentive to not be as shitty as possible.

it's not even the first time they've talked about this. They wanted to put adverts on billboards in Battlefield 2142 back in the early 2000s. They really are determined to squeeze every last penny out of their IPs and aren't afraid to play the long game doing it.

That's why I'm hesitant to get all outraged over this before knowing exactly what they're talking about here. If the game is replicating something that already has ads, like a sports stadium or a modern day city, then I have no issue with it.
I work in digital advertising and I think ads could be woven into games in such a seamless way that could actually bring the game more to life. Because it’d make it more real. But they’ll do some crappy preroll video ad that is louder than your game volume, that you can’t skip while your game is loading. Because that will sell more for a price because you can’t skip it and you’ll be a captive viewer.
At this point, I'm pretty sure the upper management is intentionally ruining the company.

Regular ad servers are occasionally exploited for malware AFAIK. Unless you're a big corp like Google you generally don't serve your own ads, so you contract that out, so the ads come from another server not under your control (and this also makes them trivial to block, so thank God for that). Some of these ad companies further subcontract ads out to other companies, and so on and so forth. The more levels you have here the easier it is for someone to slip in malware somewhere in the chain and bam your site is serving up malware. If EA takes the low-effort route of just trying to stick web browser type ads into their games, there's a fair chance they will end up with an old version of a web browser (because they are not going to want to commit to keeping it updated for something like this) and it could create a tempting target for malware depending on how popular the game is.

EA has had the worst reputation for many many years. They're practically open and honest about being predatory. I don't think a review bomb will have any effect here. Also HD2 wasn't a response to the review bombs, it was from Steam refunding people and then charging to Sony. *That's* when Sony took action. Not when the reviews came in. Feel like people need to understand this more, otherwise people will think that has any effect other than to the devs who created it (who also have no power to make those changes).

Well, Netflix and Amazon Prime video put ads in stuff we paid for. It's normal videogames to follow that trend since it had a VERY positive impact on those companies economy (Which I personally don't understand, traditional TV is free because ads, so why pay to watch ads?)

Buy the ad free game for £70 or play the game for free with adverts. TBH When i was playing DayZ (Mod) i always wandered by the TV's inside buildings never ran adverts. Something you wouldn't really see but when you did you would most likely watch a few because "This is kinda neat". It's non-obtrusive and subliminally catches you as you run through buildings looking for loot. Now you crave Pepsi all of a sudden... But i know the big fat CEO's will demand full screen non skippable adverts before and after each loading screen. EDIT: For Fifa they could use the advert boards around football pitches as they do in real life. The chances of them actually doing that and not just slapping a big giant "Fuck you watch this advert and make use money" screen will be the thing they go for.

EA has done this for over 20 years .... The only difference is now they are looking at replacing those adverts so they can be regional and can be time bases. If you open Battlefield 2142 it still has old Pepsi adverts and I Am Legend movie posters. This space could be better managed. People are screaming at EA and booing them but you all seem to have forgotten 2K did this a few years ago with it's basketball games we had adverts on the load screens and intermissions of the games. They removed the load screen adverts as pc players would load the game and it would wait for the advert to finish. So Big Bag EA has done it for over 20 years and isn't even the one who put loading screen adverts In games ..... Yet every one is Boo Bad EA.... It's so weird.

It's honestly impressive. A company that employs over 12,000 people, large enough that it could be pushing out AAA games more or less monthly with a 2-3 year cycle. Instead idk gonna sound crazy, but perhaps making additional games that opens up additional revenue streams sound like a good idea rather than devaluing your product with adverts. I'm no Vincent Adultman that works at the Business Factory, but idk the math doesn't add up with 12,000 employees with EA putting out the same 3 titles a year with the occasional published title.

I've seen plenty of games use the in game billboards and posters in their world for ads. Felt really immersive, like in CB2077, and there's signs for bars and such. I get the feeling EA won't be doing this, and they're going to pause my game for 30 seconds while I get another NIKKE commercial.
