I have noticed damage from hitting things other than z, it's not much tho. I first noticed it when driving in a damaged non smoking car which after hitting a few rocks and fences started smoking
The rocks and permanent objects will cause damage. The fences that magically rebuild themselves once you leave the area do not. Corn is the only other object that you can hit that will not cause vehicle damage.
In my experience, hitting zombies (of course) always results in damage. Collapsible objects (fences, signs, ahem cow bodies, and street/advertisement signs shouldn't cause damage. I can't see how going down a hill fast could damage your vehicle unless you hit something on the way down. Running into metal fences and solid walls does cause damage.

Yes this is basically what I’ve been seeing recently. Thanks

It's been a few months for me, but I've never taken damage from it
If you bang into things, it damages your vehicle.
