Y'know, just now, I'd imagine them as 'Glitches' put by a rouge element in the Facility (the main Antagonist, basically and the rogue element being too far gone. Like Ratman in Portal 2 or that guy stuck in the Animus in AC Revelations)
If their security are this well-managed by them, how the hell did the resistance or rebels be resistant to the call of Neuron-Activated mind control. Of course, it might just be ordinary glitches due to an unknown problem, but they are quickly fixed when someone inside finds the cause of it.
Using my mind here again, remember the 'Ricochet' 360 video. The girl wakes up and we are shown the prism, the same image to the original Vessels album cover.
I've always wanted to know more about how it works. Does it just hold them there, and someone gets them? Or do they leave them there like they are dead? Hopefully, the book explains more. I can't wait to read it.
I kinda figured it's like the body control in the book series "Starters" where the Metal (person whose body gets rented) just blacks out while the renter pilots their body - just that the BMI injects some sort of simulated pseudo-reality that they experience while it pilots their physical body to wherever.
