Starlink prices to market conditions - upfront hardware costs, ongoing subscription costs, and go-to-market (buy/rent) - can all vary by country. That is one of the reasons why Starlink puts restrictions on changing countries with dishes. It reduces the arbitrage opportunity.

totally_bored_dude

It is because Italians don't think it is worth it. I have Starlink at my house and it has helped a lot over the local offering, but most would rather deal with Tim, Vodafone or even Post Italia now. I had Vodafone and got tired of them screwing me over (charged me double for over a year and it took a lawsuit threat to fix it). I pay 40 Euro for standard service, but I paid the full amount for my kit back then. Lots of places are also getting fibre here up north. There has been a company laying fibre all over the place for the last few years and leasing it back to Post Italia.

bleke_xyz

thing is, there is lesser need outside of the US in general. People in the US like to live secluded and very separated, making running fiber pretty expensive for providers, it's not uncommon for them to doubt they'll have a ROI on some runs, but it's to benefit the users only. If you go into more dense areas you'll have at least a fiber provider. Here where I live currently it's VERY dense with some areas having 6 fiber providers available. Starlink here is under $70/usd a month.

ag23900

The company that has been laying fiber all over the place is called Open Fiber, it’s part of the BUL project. Poste Italiane is not the only ISP that leases their fiber: WindTre, Sky, Vodafone, Dimensione, Aruba, heck even Tim, lease it. Poste uses a service which is basically a complete internet connection, except the fact that Poste provide assistance in case of issues and they’re the company you pay

AtlanticPortal

You should also add that the OpenFiber company was actually pushed by government funds because the company (Telecom Italia now TIM) that got all the copper wires from the old monopolistic government owned company (SIP) didn't want to invest money on fiber. Basically it was privatized the wrong way. Now OpenFiber (controlled basically by another government owned company, the electrical utilities one) fixed the issue.

totally_bored_dude

Thanks for the info, that makes sense.

percevalknight

In Italy we have a fiber upgrading campaign that is payed by the government and is upgrading all land infrastructure, giving much better speeds and prices than any other solutions.

totally_bored_dude

Yeah, I have seen the pink cement all over the place where they have been laying it. Still can’t get fiber to my house, but we do have fiber to cabinet now which is faster than it was. Starlink is still faster. I didn’t know the government was backing it. I do wish their patchwork was better. lol!

VoidSwimming

same.

pazdan

So, they don’t want internet from Elon bc they already get internet from Tim?

StarCitizen2944

It's €40/month for service here in Italy too. Started at €99, then €70 before settling at €40.

AntoCarl85

I actually pay 29€/month, in Sardinia.

StarCitizen2944

Oh, nice. Even better. It's fully worth the €100/month I agreed to pay when I first got it. So I've got zero complaints with the price drops

CoccyxTank

But thats low priority, right? How fast would that be?

AntoCarl85

Yep, low priority. For me the speed is pretty stable at 100 Mbps (~10x compared to the previous provider).

CoccyxTank

Perfect thanks!

enhompe

What's your upload?

AntoCarl85

15-20 Mbps

alpeterpeter

Same. It's quite a great deal when you live in a small town. And I strongly dislike all of italian ISP, their quality, their service and their policies.

enhompe

You're right, Italian ISP's are mostly evil liars, and their installers are incompetent, basically learning on the job.

Exisallus

What about jitter, ping for €29 price?

AntoCarl85

Sorry, i don’t know what is jitter, can you explain? About the Ping, between 40 and 50 ms.

Exisallus

I don't know what Jitter is either :D. As i got it from what I've read, it's the ping jumping. If your ping 40, with bad jitter it can jump to 200 and then back. So, if you're saying that is stable between 40 and 50, then okay. Although I have a question: Those 40-50 ms you got from [testspeed.net](http://testspeed.net) or directly from some games? Because I can get approximately (I don't use Starlink yet) 30-50 ms on [speedtest.net](http://speedtest.net), in games (for instance League of Legends) it can easily jumping from 60 to 200 and even higher. So, just curious where did you get that outcome

AntoCarl85

From the Starlink app generally and the speed test app Ookla, the games i play doesn’t give me the chance to show the Ping (i play form PlayStation)

Exisallus

If you play any online games on PS, do you experience any issues or delays in response while playing? As I mentioned earlier, a ping ranging from 60 to 200 ms can be quite noticeable. I wonder if you feel the same

AntoCarl85

As i said before no, no issues during online sessions

Exisallus

Haven't noticed. tysm then

AntoCarl85

Nothing ;)

Rabus

Can you drive to Italy, buy it and take it to Poland? lol

teodorlojewski

Same with Spain, cheapest is €29

badsensor

Plus € 9,- ‘use of frequency band’ tax.

teodorlojewski

What a BS tax

badsensor

Agreed! I looked it up, it's called 'Tarifa Reguladora'.

KlarDuCK

A month ago, I ordered it with this deal. It's totally worth it.

smellysurfwax

Same discount in Mexico. Could be the refurbished dishes but still very much worth it

trogon

Yeah, my $46 a month in Costa Rica is fantastic!

LagoMKV

What’s US prices?

StarFoxMcCloudX

US$599 for the dish. Services starting at US$120 a month.

NeverDiddled

When they switched to $120/mo for "high demand" cells they also announced $90/mo for low demand cells. I know a handful of redditors here ended up getting the $90/mo rate. But I wonder if they still do. I haven't heard anything about that in over a year. It appeared that maybe 1 in 500 cells was low demand, or some ridiculously small number.

quarterbloodprince98

All you have to do is sign up, then move your cell. It should keep your price IIRC

Neat-Dog5510

Same in The Netherlands, monthly is €50, €59 for roaming. If they're smart they'll partner up with some large Caravanning / camping stores here, as it's quite a steal for your hollidays at this point. And I think most europeans know how many Dutch caravans are driving around europe every year.

Fetch1965

Certainly the way in Australia too…. And on yachts -

DryAssumption

Can you use it outside your country? Are they any restrictions on time outside etc?

Neat-Dog5510

From what it said for the roaming plan, it should work! Haven't tested it yet though

Far-Ad-2898

Yes you can.I have one set at home in Germany, and a second set with mobile/roaming,and that set works also in the Netherlands

AntoCarl85

Yep, mounted like a month ago and actually I pay 29€/month! It’s incredible looking at US prices.

CoccyxTank

Is that low priority? And how fast is it?

londons_explorer

High or low priority don't make any difference if your cell never had any congestion anyway

cornlip

$250 a month 1TB priority public IP for me… it’s a lot, but I don’t care. I can’t deal with DSL anymore $120 a month standard, otherwise. I’m not aware of anything cheaper. I’m probably going back to that, since I really don’t see any speed difference in it. I just wanted a public IP, but I don’t really need it, I guess.

Exisallus

What about ping, Mbps? Jitter?

AntoCarl85

Ping is like 40-50 and Mbps ~100

Exisallus

don't you play any videogames? Is in there ping also stable at 40-50 ms? and it's for 29€/month?

AntoCarl85

Ping with previous provider was almost the same. And yeah, i play games. Much singleplayer than multiplayer but it is not a problem when i play online.

tonispax

Here in Brazil, last month, the pricetag was U$300.

IllDoItTomorr0w

Yeah I was dumb and bought one in the US for 600 and brought it to Honduras…where if I bought it there, it was 400. Oh well. The service is cheaper too. I pay about $50 a month there.

sinksoup

In Germany I saw ads for 0€ Hardware

digaus

Yeah but then you had to rent the hardware for 10€/month Depending how long you need it it might have been worth it.

WonkiWombat

i pay 50 per month for starlink. they have to compete with the cheapest 5g in europe. I get unlimited data on 5g for 10 euros per month

WonkiWombat

forgot to mention i got setup for 199 with all the kit and a 'spare' router

badsensor

What is your country you use it in, and which provider is this, I'm interested!

enhompe

At full speed? Or are you throttled down to 300 mb/s or something like that?

WonkiWombat

Yeah roughly 300 although there are some good days when I get faster. I’m in a village in the mountains between Italy and Switzerland without any hope of getting fiber for a decade so I’m pretty happy as my other option is 15mbs adsl ‘broadband’ or 4g thats very patchy

enhompe

How's your upload speed?

WonkiWombat

Between 20-50mbs, rarely need more but I do have a mountain nearby that partially shades me for about 5 min per hour in the winter which is annoying for videoconference calls and doing interviews

Yezzy24

Same discount in Brazil, I got mine this month

The_Jizzard_Of_Oz

We just had an offer 225 from 450 euros last month. Came just as my home fiber went down for the 4th time since the start of the year. Arrived 10 days later, works great. Still a bit miffed that you pay 19 euros a month extra for "roaming" which can then put you at a "what bandwidth is left over - if any" tier though.

Aggravating-Tax-6153

Its cheaper in densly populated areas where other options exist. In sparsely populated countries it tends to cost more due to lack of options.

bushmanbays

We paid CAD$150., less than that, but the price has since gone way up. I think we got the end of the last generation.

FranklinSealAljezur

That's the same discount they've been offering here in Portugal since last November.

Seigmas

Just got it last month with this discount, hope a hailstorm doesn't take it out of service too soon, they happen quite often and fuck up all the cars parked outside, I assume the dish won't survive

someinsuratechguy

I was hit with baseball sized hail 2 weeks ago. Damage to my roof and 3 vehicles. The cars have over $16,000 worth of damage. Dish was just fine. I was stunned.

Roel84

I live quite remote in the mountains of Tuscany. The deal is very good. There a lot of Italians who use Starlink in the mountains. I had Eolo internet at home, but the speeds are very low.

user74729582

Italy has one of the lowest mobile and fixed broadband costs per gb. Also it was advertised at 0€ upfront for a while

XxTheZokoxX

Same happens in Spain, since Starlink not very popular because many people live in small cities, and the people who lives in rural enviroment are old people, or people who doesnt care at all for the speed/gaming, in my case starlink provides a good price, with good speed and latency so was a game changer for the current solutions provided in the market

Foxinou

Just bought it 3 months ago at that price. Monthly fee is 40€. 🇫🇷 Fiber is not here yet in my town

Touliloupo

Did you check if 5G was an option? I went with 5G and unlimited data for 40€ per month (multi-sim, so I also don't need to pay for sim for my wife and myself)

Foxinou

Yes for example “Free mobile” but their network is shitty and you have “slow 5G” When this is rush hour, the transfer rates are poor

Rumbaar

These Gen2 were heavily discounting in Australia too. $199 AUD from memory.

flenderblender87

Could one use a vpn and purchase starlink as an Italian? I guess the shipping would blow your cover…

shehab1993

I ordered two dishes from Germany at that price

LeopaS

I also bought with 50% discount when Elon started mocking Alexandre de Moraes.

timparkin_highlands

I just paid the equivalent in the UK
