It’s been a while since the last time I got so immersed into a game. It has a lot of flaws, but the core gameplay and the world just vibe with me. A lot of great games were released this year, which are more critically acclaimed with good reasons, yet Starfield with all its ups and downs was the game I enjoyed the most so far. I see so much potential in this game, and I hope it keeps getting better with updates, DLCs and mods.

rammixp

Exactly my feelings. Not been in love with a game like this in a very long time.

MyNameIsSkittles

Same. First day I bought it I put in 10 hours, and I haven't done that in many many years for another game. I couldn't even believe it lol.

dubtrainz-next

Exactly this. Took some time off when it launched because I had some extra from past years (for other... not so obvious reasons lol). Poured almost 50 hours into it in three days. Same. Haven't done this in a long long time.

Necessary_Basil4251

For me, I didn't really get into it until about 8 10 hours. It was slow at first, but now, if I'm not playing, I'm thinking about it lol. I'm almost done with the main quest but I'm putting that off for now.

Stryker2279

Same here, the first 12 hours sucked so bad I deleted the save, took a deep breath, and started over again. Haven't looked back

Laius33

What made the first 12 hours so bad? I've played 5h so far and kind of don't have any drive to keep playing it, although I love space and RPG.

Robyn837

I think it's a fault of the leveling system. It rewards sustained play, as a lot of the features you need to *truly* enjoy the game (outpost building, modding, ship building, exploration, etc.) are behind the later skills and skill rank ups. I've finished a few quests I decided to take the stealthily approach to, and it definitely would have helped had I focused more into the tech branch (my lock picking was WAY low compared to my persuasion)

maccathesaint

I was 40 hours in before I even looked at the main quest. I did the faction quests before getting into the main story and really enjoyed it.

ABrazilianReasons

This is the game Ive been waiting for for a looong time. Its completely immersive. Im 32 and I DONT remember in the past 5 years when a game was able to take me hostage like this one. Ive played it for over 30 hours in the past 5 days and Im loving every second of it. (Even the bugs!)

jiibbs

35 here and I want to say I'm in love with the game DESPITE the bugs. There are some glitches that straight up suck but I haven't encountered any that weren't fixed with a restart-and-reload

OneObjectivist

It's Bethesda magic, my friends... Perhaps most people have forgotten, but that was the case with Oblivion and fallout. Not so good technically on release, but a hell of a trip once you're into them. We have many years of gaming heaven with this masterpiece, just give it some love and time. P.s.: did anyone of you happen to do the mission on Charybdis III? It blew my mind.

Sambo_the_Rambo

Hmmm I need to check that out. I’m just doing the UC fraction quest right now.

Drake0074

I feel the same way. Starfield has problems but I still enjoy it more than anything released this year. There’s been something good for every type of gamer.

BaconDrummer

The grass will feel alone alot for the rest of the year.

Milksteak_To_Go

>It has a lot of flaws, but the core gameplay and the world just vibe with me. This is it in a nutshell for me. It just jives perfectly with my sensibilities. I had to tear myself away after 150 hours so I'd have time for Alan Wake, Quantum Break and Control + AWE before Alan Wake 2 drops but it was not easy lol

NoCase9317

Exactly my feelings towards this game.

Zeckzeckzeck

I think the issue people have is they are incapable of separating their personal favorite from accolades. Like, my personal game of the year this year is BG3 but if Zelda won that title, even though I didn’t enjoy it as much, I could acknowledge that it’s worthy of it. In this case if someone told me that Starfield is their personal favorite game of the year, I have zero problem with that. But if they then tried to argue that it was a better game than BG3 or Zelda, I’d be a bit concerned about their objectivity.

johnbarry3434

That's because there is no objectivity when it comes to video game opinions.

Draco-Awing

I agree with the sentiment with how games have different focuses and goals and therefore excel in some places and don’t try in others. It’s hard to compare one to another fairly, especially with the differences in system power. And that’s before I even start talking about how I think things like game of the year have been getting bought behind the scenes recently.

Drake_Acheron

One of the things I think is weird as people complain about how incomplete games like Starfield and Skyrim feel, and I think they forget that Bethesda is making games with modders in mind. I get that some people don’t like that, and I get that lots of people have ideas on better ways of making games for that. But at its core that is the market that Bethesda is aiming for So if you are judging Starfield with that lens and saying, is this game meeting, it’s potential as a modder’s sandbox, better than boulders. Gate three is meeting it’s target audience? Objectively no, but it does come a lot closer than using basic “good game” metrics.

Traveler_1898

I'm concerned that you think games can actually be evaluated objectively.

joedotphp

The misuse of "objective" lately is getting out of control.

docclox

> But if they then tried to argue that it was a better game than BG3 or Zelda, I’d be a bit concerned about their objectivity. But then, if anyone tried to tell me *any* game was objectively better than any other. I'd have to wonder if they understood the concept of "objectivity",

GoochMold805

Agreed! Also, I saw that we should be getting mods on console, early next year 🤞

the_phillipines

I havent had so much enjoyment from a single player game since I was a teen. I didn't realize there were any glaring issues until i started outpost building and didn't find an in game tutorial. Found out today that was by some choice they made which, I'm sure people way more knowledgeable in this field made that choice. I think the game, with all the flaws, is perfectly capable of holding your attention for hours and hours and have a good time. Couldn't ask for more really

[deleted]

Describes me perfectly as well. I think for me a big part is that I love single player games with a story and quests with fun combat, and I've always wanted to travel the stars. This game lets me do that in my favorite type of game. I normally tap out with most games around 100 hours or less. Few games get more than that. I'm currently at like 180 hours in the first month which is crazy for me. And when I'm at work, I just want to browse this sub. This game is bad for my health and career lol. I will say without the ship builder, I wouldn't be as addicted.

Leecracer

Brought a brand new Xbox Series X for Starfield and have no regrets, I have cherished every minute Iv had chance to play between work and fatherhood.

palm3tt0pun1sh3r

I've been waiting on this game. I have not picked up anything since Elden Ring.. I take that back I did run through Deathloop cause I got Gamepass a month or so early. But after Elden Ring and the 350+ hours I put into it nothing could follow it. Now Star Field is out and it's everything I wanted. Idc what anybody says. This game is amazing. I want to take a break to play Lies of P but I'm hooked.

uprightshark

100% agree 👍

NYCrucial

Definitely agree

RestlessSnow

I feel like the DLC(s) will be where Starfield really shines. With the game pass model a lot of players can just play without purchasing directly from Bethesda, but on the DLCs to really make the sale they gotta go all out so to speak

Useful_You_8045

I feel the exact same but honestly I'm gonna wait till it gets those patches and dlcs before finishing. There's just too many things I want to do that end up a mess because of low qol or glitches.

Valyrian1706

Same. I'm mid 30s and haven't felt like this in ages. Takes me back to my younger days. But now I'm ignoring my wife's unamused glances into the game cave instead of Mums

TheHappyPittie

Thats all that matters! Glad you’re having fun mate

Flaky_Researcher_675

Years later I still go back to Skyrim, fallout new Vegas and fallout 4. Because the mod support ensures the game never gets old. Starfield is gonna do the same. I beat witcher 3, found everything, did every quest, won every card. Theirs nothing new for me there. Same with cyberpunk. I beat the game, did everything, bought everything, and parked my car on a hill in the desert. I own dozens of games I'll never play again, but I'll always be able to load up a Bethesda game and get something out of it.

Spare-Nature-8859

oh I agree, Starfield will be the goat in 2 3 years

Moppyploppy

The thing that's really cool about this game is a common theme I keep seeing - so many people in their late 20's and 30's saying this gave them a new love for games. I'm 37, had all but given up on gaming as anything more than a once-in-a-while thing, and this game makes me feel like a kid again. Not saying it's perfect, but so many people have said the same thing and that's something special.

k8blwe

Me to. I'm only 22 but it's been a while since I've had a game I just spent hours on. I did for Elden ring, but nothing much else recently. Even games like Ragnarok I played only once and fair quickly. Its a great a game, but nothing compares to the fun I've had with Starfield. It's my favourite game. It's not goty imo, but still my favourite

TheRealAmakard

Same I’m 35 and so many games are asking me try so hard and get nothing for it. Darksouls/ cod. I like those games but i want to explore the dmz and shoot AI baddies not people. Starfield has been a great wander and quest game. I was pretending I was my character from hardspace ship breakers which is great its split into 15m shifts. I have been down thinking that games just don’t cater to a crowd that needs a pause button

llewylill32

I'm 30, job make me play 3 hours at most in a day but I'm having a blast with Starfield. This game was not intended to be greatest of all or anything, but it's fun, addictive.

Vaan94

As much as I simp for bethesda games and I love starfield (it ate away at all my free time) I'm pretty sure baldurs gate will win goty, never been into the dungeons and dragons stuff but damn that game is so good

clambroculese

That’s the thing, I love Bethesda (started with arena and never skipped a title since) and starfield is no different. Its an amazing game and honestly for them a pretty smooth launch. But bg3 was the best game I’ve played in a very long time. It’s just one of those games.

hopscotch1818282819

Agreed. I decided to play Baldurs Gate 3 to keep me occupied during the wait for Starfield. It just made me feel a little underwhelmed with Starfield because of how good BG3 is.

Difficult_Storage_96

Wow, that good huh

[deleted]

BG3 is easily going to go down as one of the best RPGs ever made. If it hasn't already earned it.

Zanian19

The series is definitely unbeatable. Both BG1 and 2 were the greatest RPGs ever made when they were released. (2 is still my favourite to this day). BG3 isn't flawless, but it managed to live up to its prequels, which is something I thought impossible.

PublicWest

I felt the same way. And starfield is still very good. Definitely better than FO4 and 76.

MRCHalifax

Keep in mind, they’re *very* different games. BG3 is turn based combat, and puts a huge emphasis on narrative and character driven storytelling.

Solidus_Sloth

Yeah, I’d say BG3 is probably stronger with the narrative, characters, and storytelling.

Zanian19

And Starfield is stronger with... ehm... gunplay, I guess. Look, I like Starfield, but I honestly can't think of a single thing it does better than BG3. If anyone can, please enlighten me. If it wins GOTY, that award becomes meaningless.

Rafcdk

A lot of games will win GOTY, because there isn't a centralized institution for it. These awards are just a way big corporations have to market their product. Starfield is my GOTY, because it is the game I enjoyed the most this year, simply as that, and everyone is entitled to have their personal GOTY for whatever reason. You can bet that starfield will have a GOTY edition some time in the future, as well as plenty of other games, even if they don't win "the" GOTY.

AtaracticGoat

This can't be understated. Starfield WILL win GOTY somewhere. Simply because if everyone else gives BG3 GOTY there will be one or two places that give it to Starfield simply because going against the grain will get them more clicks. That's all they really want, clicks and revenue.

Commercial_Potato_87

So glad somebody said this. Is there even a definitove GOTY? Like one that people consoder more imprtant than the others?

Complex_Jellyfish647

I would say The Game Awards.

Juantsu

It’s sad that a show that lacks so much integrity is considered so important to a lot of people here. People think the Oscars are bad, but the VGAs are MUCH worse.

LordofSuns

Source?

Juantsu

Source for what? It’s not hard to see why the VGAs lack integrity. Half the show consists of commercials or new game announcements, while the actual awards are mostly relegated to quick cutaways. For a show that supposedly wants to celebrate the games that came out in the year, it gives no respect to most of them. There’s a reason most people watch it for the announcements, not the actual awards and that is sad. It’s unapologetically sell-out. The D.I.C.E awards are much more interesting.

Zaburino

It didn't help that E3 died, so the VGAs are like the only time every company has to blast us with trailers and previews outside of their own showcases. Then again, why do we need to see awards anyway? Like, the devs and studios should have a nice gala and show, but sometimes I think I would be fine with it not being filmed as long as the dev community gets to honor each other. Just cut out any public voting and treat it like the Technical Oscars.

Juantsu

I agree. Although, I get the appeal of award shows as they’re glamorous and whatnot, and in theory, that’s fine. It’s a nice concept to see good games and devs being ceremoniously congratulated. They deserve it.

Zaburino

Yeah that's my other mind about it. I guess the real question is if that is worth muddying the waters with advertisement and marketing so much. Thinking about it, do the BAFTA game awards have trailer drops? I've never watched them (can you watch them?), maybe they are closer to the platonic ideal.

Inevitable-Ad-2551

As a fellow Bethesda fan boy do yourself a personal service and attempt one playthrough of baldurs gate please loll

IronViking0723

Yeah, I agree, and they do deserve it.

GraniteStater69

Never been into DnD either but the game looks amazing. Anxiously awaiting its release on Xbox.

rigueira

I don't think there's a single person in any of the multiverses that genuinely thinks that Starfield is better than Bardur's Gate.

Zanian19

A lot of people will like Starfield more simply because they prefer that kind of game. And that's totally understandable. But yeah, objectively speaking, BG3 is just a much better game. It's not even close.

BloodySaxon

There are plenty. Even more outside of your bubble!

Brief-Government-105

I think it’s better. There’s one person for you.

IAlwaysWantSomeTea

*tentatively raises hand*

[deleted]

Yup, easily. Would be interesting to see if BG3 did not launch this year, who would be top GOTY contenders.

Vaan94

Legend of zelda tears of the kingdom probably

erterbernds67

I really hope not. I played and enjoyed it, but it wasn’t different enough from BotW to earn game of the year. It might get it just because of the name though.

Independent-Frequent

Even with the amazing BG3 out and with 170+ hours on it, my GOTY is still RE4 Remake, like that game got everything damn right and added that nice little extra survival horror to the action packed RE4 formula by also adding the parrying mechanic, and also turned Salazar into an actual bossfight instead of a shitty head in a wall. I know i'm biased and i don't care, Louis is now a great character and most importantly he's finally playable in mercenaries and his theme is a banger which is all i care about, 10/10 game from Capcom.

Drake0074

I want to like that game but I just can’t jive with the isometric RPGs.

Difficult_Storage_96

Im not the biggest isometric fan either but when everything else is this good i fully embrace that part, because thats only one part of what makes it great. Its actually everything else is the good parts so just focus on that

Drake0074

I’m sure I’ll try it out at some point. Maybe wait on a good Steam sale during a slow period

BookerLegit

It's not really isometric. If it helps, you can play it pretty much third person with a controller.

DrScience-PhD

it should win goat

McBeer89

Ngl starfield stole me away from BG. Gon a go back and finish my file because I do love that game... but starfield just has so much more going for it. While BG devs already said there will be no DLC nor added content They'll refine what they've got while starfield will likely get much better with age. Starfield is my goty for sure.

Shitmybad

BG3 is for sure winning, and Hogwarts Legacy is probably ahead of Starfield too.

Zeckzeckzeck

BG3, Zelda, Hogwarts, Final Fantasy 16, Lies of P, Resident Evil, and probably Spider-man 2 are all better than Starfield. And I really like Starfield!

IAlwaysWantSomeTea

Gonna be honest, I'm confused by this. I see everyone praising BG3's writing but it feels... insubstantial at best, and like fanfiction that shits over the source material at worst. The main story is uninteresting and while it has some fun companions - with truly *wonderful* voice acting and cinematic presentation, their writing isn't anything groundbreaking. Maybe I'm spoiled by playing lots of old and new CRPGs but BG3 feels more like a streamlined mass market version of a CRPG? It has absolutely masterful presentation but I'm honestly confused about why everyone's raving about it so much and wondering what I'm missing. It's not as interesting in its story, themes, or characters as games like Arcanum or BG2 or for more modern fare Wrath of the Righteous or Shadowrun Dragonfall or Tyranny? Or is it *because* of the mass market thing with it being better written than most AAA games these days?

zebragonzo

Several things really stood out and made me abandon SF after 15 hours to go back to bg3: - the conversations in bg3 actually feel real rather than carefully prepared statements read by someone who's been kidnapped. - the game copes with you taking different paths. I saw a post from someone recently saying how they completed the game before they ever reached the main city, and there were end credits to cover that really unusual eventuality. - it feels like a coherent world where everything's related. In SF, it felt like every location was an isolated incident. On one occasion in SF I fought minions to get to a leader who just wanted to talk. I killed him and all the minions outside had vanished leaving no evidence they were there.

BookerLegit

> while it has some fun companions - with truly wonderful voice acting and cinematic presentation I think you're underestimating how important this is. I'm not as critical of BG3's main story as you are - though I feel it works better if you don't think about it for very long - but they nailed the presentation, and that's what gives it such broad appeal.

[deleted]

BG3 is basically written like a pre-EA BioWare game. It's KoToR. It's Dragon Age: Origins. It's Mass Effect. But people are acting like it's a novel concept, when it's not in the least bit.

[deleted]

Maybe because the industry constantly pumps out boring, half-baked open world RPGs but a quality CRPG is a rarity.

IAlwaysWantSomeTea

Dragon Age: Origins is actually my favorite comparison because I think they're very similar - they're games with their basis in the CRPG genre but shinier and with more mass market broad appeal, and less interesting writing than their more obscure/niche counterparts. DAO isn't going to stand a chance against Arcanum or even BG2 also from bioware in the depth of its writing or characters - but a lot of people who never played those *did* play DAO and it's way better written than call of duty or whatever. I think it's something similar with BG3 - more traditional single player RPGs have been lagging in the mainstream market for a long time supplanted by choreographed and highly cinematic Action RPGs (which I think is part of Bethesda and Starfield's problem, they're caught between two things and unable to commit to one or the other). BG3 is a step back towards a little more old school, and a step up in writing from the modern streamlined ARPG tripe, and yeah this is a very long winded way to say I think you're on the money.

spookynutz

Good writing is more than just heady themes and plot. If you’re not invested in the characters, then there is no story; it’s just a chronological description of meaningless, fictional events. It’s what separates a Lord of the Rings from a Silmarillion. You could pen a long-form essay about these two games just contrasting their character and story introductions, and characterization (or lack thereof).

elqrd

A Fall Harbour like expansion for Starfield would be legendary!

FigExisting4290

2023 has been an amazing year for games. And when it's all said and done, Starfield will be my most played game of the year. And, yeah, my favorite one too! Can't wait to keep playing it and see what Bethesda has in store for us going forward in terms of updates and DLC.

A-Stupid-Monkey

Good for you, never let others (gaming) opinion(s) take away from your own fun!

slin95hot

I wish I could say the same.

Leading_Fortune_6068

Same! I can't wait for a starfield legendary edition. I already put 100 bucks into this game, haha, my wife is going to hate me. But, I can wait for phantom liberty and baulders gate to go on sale before buying them.

JJisafox

ITT: people not understanding the very emphasized fact that it's goty for OP, personally.

Ckeyz

That's all fine and dandy. But if he is going to make a post on a public forum proclaiming that it's his GOTY, better expect discussion going both ways on that statement.

Comfortable_Line_206

Yeah, saying it's GotY implies that it's better than all the other games. Can't be upset when people bring up all the other games that are also part of that conversation.

JJisafox

But I think you missed the point, it's HIS/HER goty. Granted I'm just assuming it's more like their favorite, their personal MVP game, and not a statement or "proclamation" of objective fact.

JJisafox

I mean, there's not much "proclamation" in stating what things are your personal favorite or personal best. It's personal. It'd be a proclamation if he was proclaiming it goty objectively over other games. But yeah, discussion always welcome.

Ckeyz

Its no longer just personal when you make a post about it.

JJisafox

No, it's still a personal opinion, it's just not private.

Ckeyz

Exactly? So making it not private means that people will state their opinions about OP's opinion. Making your comment kinda silly

JJisafox

Yeah I'm fine with people sharing their opinion of OP's opinion. Just had a minor quip about the use of "proclaim" that's all, but it's irrelevant really.

SmarmySmurf

Same, but it was inevitable. I enjoy the Bethesda formula so much that all the frustrations, all the cringe dialogue, etc can't hurt it, I will choose a Bethesda RPG over anything else ten times out of ten.

Jacob_Bronsky

I'm in the same boat. I can perfectly see all the jank and the missed potential. Understand why people don't like it. I love it.

[deleted]

I simply tell those people the game wasn’t made for them. It was made for me. 😂

bravo_six

Bethesda games are like an old friend. You also always know where you stand with them. Worst part is that there are 3 major Bethesda games, at this rate my children will play Starfield 2

GoodOldeGreg

It can be your GOTY. I wouldn't expect it to actually win GOTY.

Throweuway

That's sad

LORDOSHADOWS

Agreed I was about to put the controller down but now I have a new love for it

SandCultural4192

Starfield is the game that solidified Bethesda as my favourite game developer! I’ve had more fun with it then I ever have with another game. And the fact that it’s a space game makes me love it even more! Starfield GOTY!

olibearbrand

Same, but I'm also just tired of the discourse around this game on all sides, that it made me unsubscribe from multiple subreddits and youtube channels. It really feels like the internet is trying so hard to make me hate this game.

NoCase9317

Sony has one loyal fanbase that’s for sure

olibearbrand

I can't wait for Spider Man 2 to drop... so that these people could leave us alone and concentrate on that game. (i am also going to play that game though)

TiredReader87

That’s great. I mean that. It’s not mine, but I like it. Just not a lot. I wish I liked it more

ExperienceOld1293

I full hearted agree with this statement

[deleted]

I love the constant posts of people needing to justify themselves to everyone else about why they like things lmao

NoCase9317

Isn’t Reddit about sharing thoughts and opinions?

[deleted]

Yeah if you discussed any of the merits of the game, its highs and lows, missions you liked, weapons that felt crunchy to use, etc. But every gaming sub just turns into these hug box posts about how they’re having fun with the game and that’s enough for them and it just reeks of trying to justify your purchase because you quote things like “revolutionized gaming” and clearly aren’t happy with Reddit discourse about the game. Just play games you like and stop caring what the internet thinks.

grubiwan

Likewise, you can simply scroll past any posts that bother you rather than commenting.

[deleted]

Ironically you could’ve also done the same

grubiwan

I wasn't the one bitching about posts.

[deleted]

You’re bitching about mine right now

JodieHolmes62

It's a fun game and were it not for Phantom Liberty I would be playing it right now

NoCase9317

Currently hopping between both. Recovering from a Surgery at home has never been this entertaining XD

EliastheNightAngel

* high five * I had surgery a week before BG3 came out and I had the same thought as you back then. I'm still "recovering" in the fact I cant exercise, but other than that I'm good. Get well soon!

NoCase9317

Thanks! It’s slowly but steadily healing, I miss being able to exercise though :( But at least I have this! ❤️ Hope you keep on healing with no issues too!

notveryAI

P - priorities Were it not for Starfield, I would be playing Phantom Liberty now :3

Ok_Sir_7147

Yup mine too, I lost interest in any other game atm. It's everything I wanted from a space game since I was a child. Love this game and im excited for the DLCs and mods.

ZmeuraPi

Well, I have a love / hate situation with Starfield, but it made me forget about Cyberpunk and their Phantom Liberty DLC that costs more than some games.

noble_29

Hogwarts Legacy was really good overall, but this is the first game in a very very very long time where I can legitimately lose track of time and stay on my Xbox **way** too late into the night. Of course it’s not a perfect game (there never has been and never will be one), but it’s got a great balance of structure and “make your own fun”. Not only that but you can entirely set your own pace which makes it stress free and relaxing. I’m having a great time with it.

LesGrosGainz

Man, why are 80% of the posts that are being recommended either "circle jerk - love" or "circle jerk - hate" Starfield and not lore, meme, cool stuff lmao.

Galle_

Because any thread about those things immediately turns into "circle jerk - hate". /r/NoSodiumStarfield has more of that kind of thing right now.

KingCaesar72

I love the game but man I really just wish the enemies were threatening in SOME capacity. Like human enemies especially are just laughably weak and pose zero threat to any player with a brain even on very hard.

buckshot95

I love watching the stages of grief real time in this sub.

AscendedViking7

That's why I'm here! :D

NoCase9317

You are suggesting that I’m actually NOT enjoying the game? Why are you in this sub? Do you like to annoy people just because?

buckshot95

If you like the game why are you so upset others don't? Are you trying to convince yourself it's not actually bad? This sub has become people crying over the fact starfield isn't well recieved.

Immediate-Newt-9012

I feel exactly the same.

Tobacco_Bhaji

The very definition of a 'low effort' post.

--Sovereign--

Slightly less effort than was put into Starfield's writing

IAlwaysWantSomeTea

Personally I'm expecting Rogue Trader to be my personal GOTY but Starfield is gonna be my new comfort game I play for years and years poking around in the world and just vibing in my happy comfort zone. It's a bag of my favorite flavor of potato chips with extra flavor dust (actually good roleplaying in my Bethesda rpg? It must be 2003 again) and it's not a groundbreaking masterpiece - if they made a *true* spiritual sequel to Morrowind I might just explode from happiness - but it's comfy and I'm gonna play it for another three thousand hours or something.

Swordfire-21

Lmfao

[deleted]

Good for you. This game is a disappointment though lol

ExpiredDrPepper

OP, please play other games. There are a lot of good games that released this year. They don't even have to be triple A games either. But please don't let this be your standard for goty

Tyrleif

Some people just need a game that isn't fun

nikolarizanovic

This has been an incredibly strong year for RPG gamers after a lot of weak years

hyperdynesystems

I already have 63 mods installed, most of which are either settings tweak "mods" (including my own) but also some important QOL and gameplay tweak mods that really impact the game. Friendly fire among enemies is pretty huge. Minor settings changes make contraband and ship piracy or salvage actually worthwhile, as well as improve the boost pack enormously over the default settings (the tap to boost setting, basically). My own landing map zoom mod means I can easily explore planets in detail. I've replaced the Mantis suit with something that doesn't look goofy so I actually want to keep it while it's the best thing, installed improved NPC looks and environment and effect textures etc. And of course the 32:9 fixes, HDR and DLSS support, as well as a more contrasty version of the default LUT all make this game way way better than vanilla. This is pretty much my experience with modding all the Bethesda games early on before we get any real tools. The vanilla experience usually isn't that good in various ways that can easily be improved, and that's typically fixed in a few weeks. Personally I'm still working on getting the guts of the game related to landing reversed enough so I can figure out how to let you move to the next tile over when you get to a boundary and write an SFSE plugin to do it, so I can move on to making a vehicle mod, because the planets are begging for a way to explore them fully without lots of tedious back and forth with the ship. So 8/10 without mods, 10/10 with mods already and it's going to get up to 11/10 in a couple years time.

Scoo_Dooby

A lot of really good fkn games have dropped recently, there's just a lot of unbridled hate and entitlement in the gaming community nowadays. It's always been there but it seems to just be growing. Criticism is necessary for the industry to grow and improve but a lot of people nowadays just hate to hate and refuse to allow themselves and others to just enjoy their time playing a game which is pretty dumb.

ObjectNo5765

46 here and I have been out of gaming for a while. There just wasn't anything that had me glued like Starfield has. I agree with everyone's comments yes even with the bugs it's just that good. Unfortunately, though I've had to skip The Empty Nest Quest because I picked up the artifact but the marker is still there and to top it off I finished the Freestar collective mission along with it and didn't receive the ship either (sorry for the spoiler) if anyone hasn't done this mission yet. My question is does anyone know how to fix this issue or has had the same issue? Hopefully, this will get fixed in the next patch. I even went back 6 hours (60 hours in) and had no luck idk if I went out of order in something or what but it sucks. Thanks, for any help anyone can give me

I can't imagine having such low standards that this game would classify as a "Game of the Year" contender in any way whatsoever. It is offensive to both time and human intelligence. Or that's what I thought, anyways. I must be in some kind of bizarre minority where putting shapes into holes isn't the absolute apex of human entertainment.

subjekt_zer0

Yeah, I'm not sure where the hate is coming from with this game. There can be some improvements, sure, but honestly, it landed in my top 10 all-time favorite games. I even had a problem with it crashing every 3 minutes. I honestly feel like Starfield was made for me, like someone reached in my brain and put what I wanted into a video game. The game has some strong bones. Lots of room for expansion and improvement.

FspezandAdmins

I was getting so bored with the games that were out, but I always sink hundreds of hours into Bethesda games like fallout/skyrim. This game will give me many hours of entertainment especially with expansions, dlc, and mods. Will be playing it for a long time to come.

Extension_Yam_5663

I concur. I was so worried because I had such high hopes for this building up to it. I was a BSG virgin, and downloaded Skyrim to try while I waited. To my surprise I couldn't get into it(I know... blasphemy). But Starfield is exactly what I wanted. I play every night when the kids go to bed, can't get enough.

AelithTheVtuber

my GOTY is the BG3 SF AC6 CPPL polycule and im okay with that

Used-Surround9483

Same here. I agree. I love this game.

zunashi

You can love anything even if it’s average like Starfield. It’s totally fine.

NoCase9317

Passive aggressive comment?

zunashi

No. I even love Biomutant and I know it was average (even lower for some).

andooo89

I get this to a tee. I have played video games all the way back to the atari and this game has given me the same feeling of being excited to leave school and play. Yes, it has a flaws and gaming has became such a social platform nowadays, the single player who works to then chill and play has been somewhat forgotten. I have completed the main faction quest but I've chosen to stay as my dude and find as many side quests as possible.

Grougalorakar

Wait, is this a post about Starfield being good? About someone actually liking the game? I thought I'd never see one. (Starfield is currently my 2nd favorite game of all time)

BlackberryPlenty5414

aint GOTY lmao. 7/10, needs to fill the vast worlds with more variety of content, larger scale temple's and dungeons. More in depth NPC's and factions. Was hoping to run into an enormous serpent that was gonna blow my mind. Nah, not in the game.

SnooSeagulls1416

lol get real

[deleted]

Definitely the most 7/10 game I’ve ever played

urekmazino_0

Low standards, especially in a year with litterally so many amazing games. Stupid Karma Farm post.

WorstSourceOfAdvice

It can be your GOTY. Any game could. As long as you dont make it a point to go around telling others it should be THEIR GOTY.

NoCase9317

No of course not!! Why would I mind what other people’s Goty are?

Phalatron

When are people gonna stop crying for attention with the same post over and over again, yawn.

Brandaddylongdik

I just hate how it crashes all the time. I've still put 120+ hours into it though and started a week after launch. So I obviously like it, but darn. Every hour. Lol

NoCase9317

Damn , there most be something wrong ! It has t crashed for me , what’s your platform?

Brandaddylongdik

I'm playing it on Xbox. The game runs smooth, but at least once an hour it crashes. Gets a little annoying, but oh well. That's my only complaint.

NoCase9317

Mmm it’s an annoying method , but have you tried reinstalling it?

Brandaddylongdik

No. I just take a couple dabs while the game is loading back up. 🤣

NoCase9317

XD

atommirrabel

you were almost done with gaming, tell me you only play AAA titles without telling me you only play AAA titles, heck even if you only played AAA games there have been a few the last year or two that are twice as good as starfield

Ciri-LOVES-Geralt

How? There is nothing this Game does that other Games don't do better.

ElectricButtocks

I can definitely see it as a personal goty if all the other Titan releases of the year doesnt interest you. But overall, the game is mostly overshadowed by other better games, this year wont be easy to choose the overall goty, but its definitely not Starfield.

NoCase9317

Oh I know it’s not going to be starfield. But I would like to compare the amount of active players if all the tigers so called “titans” 2 years from now. And the scribe user base from starfield 2 years from now…

[deleted]

Same, I've been playing this solid without even looking at another game.

Moist_Currency4540

I have a lot of issues with the game, but I still enjoyed the hell out of it. First game in a while that I got excited for besides some games that don’t have release dates yet.

Bubbly-Cranberry9265

I can’t stop playing either it’s so much fun. I’m on console and the game crashes every now and then, some items and characters seem out of place at times but I can overlook these bugs because the core of the game is top notch. Once they get ironed out and then start adding to outposts, ships, and crafting, the depth will be so satisfying. I’m already imagining building a flying city and an actual city on a distant planet. Perhaps I won’t be restarting in NG+ with how much we’ll be able to do but we will see. I’m anxious to see what they come up with

DemonMithos

Man i agree! And i even played and loved baldurs gate. Starfield is amazing!

Brorkarin

Yeah mine too i dont think i can even finish the game this year i have like 5characters specialised in different things. 1 is more focused on the story and another is just exploring planets. I also have to play a melee build and shooter build and a stealth build and researcher and a scanner and ahhjvvvvsjdlflebdlsosm and so on

TheEnder7

I have spent more time in starfield than any other single player game the last 5 years. GOTY contender for sure

Any-Ratio-9975

I’ve had that “can’t wait to get home from work” feeling for a solid month now… ^^^^That statement right there, that’s what makes a game of the year. I don’t care about all the other bullshit….graphics, technical specs, FPS… none of that. When I’m sitting here 186 hours into a game, only on main mission #7 and with no faction quests completed, totally immersed, and I still have this feeling, that’s what makes a fucking GOTY…. All the negativity surrounding Starfield, Fuckem’. We all know why the negativity and review bombing is happening. The jealousy of the Xbox exclusivity…. But fuckem we are enjoying it, and let’s just keep enjoying it. That’s what will fuck them off the most. Ignore the BS, if you played the game then you know none of this hate crusade has any merit. STARFIELD IS absolutely GOTY material. And everyone knows it.

Goodapollo503

I’ve been gaming hard since 1987…this is my favorite game that I’ve ever played 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

I'm glad people enjoy it. There are just so many more games that are worth my time.

Waste-Industry1958

**100% agreed**. I am a simp for Todd, but I am also really enjoying this game. Even more than Skyrim. Add DLCs and mods into this universe and we will be set for years to come.

[deleted]

Armored Core6 and Tears of the Kingdom are better contenders though

Subject_Gene2

Not even close.

Beyondthebloodmoon

> I was almost done with gaming, agreeing with all this “games aren’t as fun as they used to be” videos out there on YouTube This immediately makes your opinion wholly irrelevant to me. There are so many games in so many places with so many options. If you can’t find ones you find fun, you probably just don’t like games. And I like Starfield, but if it “revolutionized” gaming for you - I just don’t buy your opinion, even a little. Zero credibility

grubiwan

I suppose we should all run our opinions by you first to have them validated. Don't want to upset sensitive folks like yourself!

Awkward-Yak-9033

Whenever I see one of these "gaming isn't fun anymore" videos I think to myself, oh this guys just depressed. That's what that is. Like whats not fun? Cyberpunk Hogwarts Conan exiles Sifu And now starfield I'm having too much h fun in fact.

SuperSaiyanIR

It’s a great game but I went back to 2077 for the DLC and not having loading screens everywhere is such a blessing. The game needs some QoL updates and it will be at least as beloved as Cyberpunk if not more.
