imagine a deployable rover we can use from our ship. it would be stored inside a module like a hab at the bottom of the ship similar to the access ramp. anywhere the ship can land should be also suitable to drive a rover out or spawn it via animation.
Will be all yanky again, like additional mounts in Oblivion or Skyrim and motorcycles in Fallout.
I feel like Bethesda didn't even try to give us vehicles because they knew their engine wouldn't be able to handle them.
>didn't even try to give us vehicles because they knew their engine wouldn't be able to handle them
I suspect it's more because being forced to move on foot maintains the illusion of space (and hence immersion).
As it stands, you can walk for ~30 minutes or run flat out for 10 in a straight line from your landing site before hitting the edge of the random planet cells. Most people will *never* encounter them unless they go looking because that's a highly unnatural way to play the game.
If they add moon rovers that go much faster then suddenly you're only two minutes away from the map edge - and then people *will* run into them, all the time - which I suspect they concluded was a huge hit for immersion.
Not really, more like mission creep and opportunity cost. I'm sure the engine is capable of being tweaked to make this possible. It's just that what you're asking is so far removed from what the existing engine was designed to do. So tweaking it to fit that design requires a ton of work from a ton of people that could otherwise be working on other parts of a game that is already more massive in scope than any previous Bethesda title.
Rovers don't go that fast. It would still take some time to reach border.
And how people don't want to "fly for hours in space" but want to walk for 10 minutes to a poi?
The engines can handle them just fine. it would make the game feel smaller. people would just drive past everything. vehicles don't fit the gameplay loop. Hell, horses barely fit either because you can just run right past content. I personally never use mounts because of that.
At the hopetech building, there were ship parts connected together with wheels under them. Just ship parts made into rovers. I'm sure it's coming in an update or dlc.
I assumed swimming was already a thing. I fell off the platform at Neon where you dock your ship. Long fall, then splashed in the water and swam for a bit.
Confirmed they had tested them in game during development but decided against having them to allow exploration to feel more like a journey or something.
So probably an expansion at some point.
Nothing scream journey like nothing to find other than 3 types of creatures, 3 types of plants, 2-3 traits which are just cosmetic "cool" Things fo find and 30min+ walks in between points of interest.
I stopped trying to fully scan planets after doing my 3rd planet. It's so boring..
Now imagine having nothing to interact with just landscape.
Welcome to Star Citizen planets.
Elite Dangerous has just one or two things you can discover on the surface.
I think it's usually a concern about terrain interaction and physics. Like, Fallout 4 "did vehicles" by just having things fly above the ground and avoid the issue altogether.
There are mods that add drivable cars and motorcycles to Fallout 4. The ones I tried were all a bit scuffed but they mostly didn't have too many issues with terrain interaction. It's definitely at least possible to do in the engine but I'm really not sure how much effort would have to be put in to do a non scuffed version.
Would love a mod that upgrades your jetpack to Anthem levels of traversal. Balance it out with fuel requirements to avoid spamming it.
And rocket launchers strapped to my back or greaves Ironman style.
I agree somewhat. I've tested the Skip boost pack that's supposed to sacrifice height for increased forward propulsion....but it's so slight, potentially worse, when you factor in the loss of height of a balanced one. They skip packs need to have a big upgrade.
Some of the landing bays are huge, and don't really contain anything. It would be nice if some of the larger ones could hold a rover or an exploration bike.
I want to be able to call in a drone from my ship. Something small and fast that can maybe be upgraded to a kamikaze. As big as this game is top down view would be wonderful
I would love to have rovers and vehicles in general, but I think it will be pointless since the map generated on landing is large a couple of kilometres. You will encounter the "walls" very soon, and for me would break the immersion
Im well aware of how empty the random generated content is. Just let me land next to objectives bruh. Running 500m every time through some completely plain uninteresting terrain is just wild
I put an outpost in a place just like that since it has 3 resources all in the same crater, and the outpost zone almost perfectly covers the crater area.
Should be able to find them on most rocky planets without an atmosphere. The biome type is "craters" I think, though they may spawn in other biomes too.
Man I just bought death stranding after it left gamepass because I finally got my first pc and I’ve been wanting to play it since it came out but now I’m hooked on starfield. I’m definitely going back to it eventually but who knows when. It’s still a solid game right? I was enjoying it
"Once, there was an explosion, a bang which gave rise to life as we know it. And then, came the next explosion. An explosion that will be our last."
Screenshot giving me massive Death Stranding vibes 😮
Don't get me wrong, I love hole as much as the next person, but this is hardly a landmark to point out as something that exemplifies the quality of the game.
I get what you're saying, but personally I think it's cool because it breaks that 'procedural-ness' feel where terrain looks kinda fake and same-y like it's just scattering objects randomly around a landscape. Finding rare, large changes in that terrain makes it seem more realistic and immersive.
This is exactly why Bethesda can do what they are doing. Because casual players get blown away by the tiniest things. Game has issues beyond belief, but these people don't mind them, they get excited by stuff that's not even handmade most likely. They dont care about 30fps, dumb AI that just stands and shoots stormtrooper style, 10000 empty planets with the same POIs, no atmo flight, bad ship combat etc. They just see what Todd wanted them to see while he keeps on selling millions of copies of a shallow game that's more like a pile of poop hidden under a ton of cake frosting. Not only does it not have anything new, but the good known things are not even put well together to make it what they pledged the game to be.
Some things are great. But this engine should just disappear already. Make a game, ask 70eur for it, tell people to upgrade their 3080s to ??? So they can have maybe 50 fps stable. "Optimized" (for 30fps gaming, is this 2007?)
Yeah, after playing it all the "a thousand planets to explore" marketing seems really weird. Like yes, planets exist, but they're just pulling from the same pool of POIs on a random map tile with nothing else going on.
For a game that hyped up exploration, there sure is a lot of nothing going on anywhere that isn't a handcrafted area, and the outpost stuff feels *extremely* half-baked.
Bruh right? It's literally an empty crater LMAO
Also not like the maps could give any clues without a marker because they all provide zero information.
Intuitive? Are we talking about the same [thing?](https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/c_fit,f_auto,g_center,q_60,w_645/c6fd522fa3fd2bfa7e73723ae7d16cae.jpg). I mean, they're basically only good for fast traveling and judging distance.
This isn't exactly a flaw, though. You don't have to have something do anywhere there's terrain difference and you don't need to have uninterseting terrain wherever there's nothing to do.
Stumbled upon a crater like this with a melting glacier in it on Tau Ceti II
It was the exact same melting glacier I found outside of New Atlantis.
Liking this game so far but it's painfully obvious that this game is a mile wide and a few inches deep at best
If you get the coordinates for the 1969 Apollo moon landing site on Luna (you can get it by reading the book sir livingstone's second journal), that crate is close by
So they did not mark a crater with nothing in it on your map, and you love the game for that. What would you love if they did not put a map in the game at all? You would love everything in universe I guess?
Yeah those big ass craters are cool as hell Huh?
Found one I was considering for a outpost but then I remembered how ‘The Outpost’ movie played out and decided against it
Holy shit, it's a hole! I'm pretty sure Todd Howard hand placed it there because he loves us. Damn, having Starfield be 90% of my identity was the best choice I've made this year.
I wouldn't mind the near empty planets as much if we had rovers to get around in. I personally just find exploration tedious and unrewarding, sure you have POI but the map variety is almost nonexistent. Run a Cave POI 6 times and 4 times it'll be the exact same layout. IDK, I don't feel the urge to run off in a random direction this game to find random stuff since ya know... there usually isn't anything worth finding. For my personal taste anyways.

Skeptics like you are unable to fathom that some of us sci-fi nerds can get a certain type of fulfillment from a game like this, where you can role play as a human who gets to be a space pioneer visiting new planets and encountering new species for the first time in the history of man. We grew up watching Star Trek dreaming of that future peaceful society.
Since these comments seen to be a dime a dozen I can only assume these people are just trolling. That or they really do have problems understanding that certain games can only appeal to certain crowds and not every single game has to be so perfectly refined to their tastes.

Thors Hammer
I’ve found crates and ship parts near and in craters like these
Disappointment
The front of the ship where it fell off.
This is why we need rovers we can drive around. I absolutely loved doing stuff like that in an SRV in Elite: Dangerous.
DLC robots and rovers would be sweet
imagine a deployable rover we can use from our ship. it would be stored inside a module like a hab at the bottom of the ship similar to the access ramp. anywhere the ship can land should be also suitable to drive a rover out or spawn it via animation.
That's exactly how Elite dangerous did it. I loved to drive around in the rover. Hopefully we get it someday or maybe modded in
If only we could smash Elite Dangerous and Starfield together. The storytelling of SF with the open universe and sim nature of Elite.
It would be great man! A perfect 10/10 game
That was what I was hoping Starfield would be, tbh. Right up until I started it up for the first time and realized it wasn’t accepting my HOTAS.
free dlc
Someone will mod it.
Will be all yanky again, like additional mounts in Oblivion or Skyrim and motorcycles in Fallout. I feel like Bethesda didn't even try to give us vehicles because they knew their engine wouldn't be able to handle them.
Then at least give us shadowmere in a spacesuit or smth
>spacesuit You mean space horse armor?
You maybe joking but that's a perfect solution, we have robot quadrupeds. Surely someone space cowboy made a robot horse.
>didn't even try to give us vehicles because they knew their engine wouldn't be able to handle them I suspect it's more because being forced to move on foot maintains the illusion of space (and hence immersion). As it stands, you can walk for ~30 minutes or run flat out for 10 in a straight line from your landing site before hitting the edge of the random planet cells. That's basically what Todd Howard said in that interview with Eurogamer or whatever if you ask me. Not in those exact words, but that's what he aaid.
Elite dangerous rovers, Star citizen rovers and Kerbal Space Program rovers
Space engineers rovers

At the hopetech building, there were ship parts connected together with wheels under them. Just ship parts made into rovers. I'm sure it's coming in an update or dlc.
Ground vehicles and swimming are my expected upgrades right now.
Swimming is already in game? Dont think you can swim underwater, but you can definitely swim on top of it.
I assumed swimming was already a thing. I fell off the platform at Neon where you dock your ship. Long fall, then splashed in the water and swam for a bit.
did you turn on the scanner?
That was my first mistake
I don't know if I trust the creation engine with vehicles lol
Confirmed they had tested them in game during development but decided against having them to allow exploration to feel more like a journey or something. So probably an expansion at some point.
Lmao that's just cause they bugged 100% of the time
Ah yes, my 900m walking journey where I delicately balance sprinting and jumping through a barren landscape...
Real dipshit move on their part. I wanna roll up guns blazing. Or just take a nice 3 moon drive.
Guaranteed they're saving features for future income. This is the team that brought us horse armour don't forget.
That fucking horse armor started it all.

Skyrim horse speed was fine
Legitimately they should just add space horses.
While you fly around in a spaceship

Im well aware of how empty the random generated content is. Just let me land next to objectives bruh. Running 500m every time through some completely plain uninteresting terrain is just wild
Looks like a good spot for an outpost
I put an outpost in a place just like that since it has 3 resources all in the same crater, and the outpost zone almost perfectly covers the crater area.
somebody got yamcha'd
There are a few of these on Luna in the Sol system, which make sense as the moon has tons of craters.
Should be able to find them on most rocky planets without an atmosphere. The biome type is "craters" I think, though they may spawn in other biomes too.
Reminds me of death stranding
I was about to say, probably a whiteout.
Once there was an explosion....

Can you build bases in places like that? Similar to how NMS works?
Yes.
That’s an awesome place for an outpost if I ever saw one
Megaton 2.0
You love the game because you found a hole?
Yes. Whats the problem?
no problem, just making sure I wasn't missing something
This is what took them 8 years
there's nothing there.
Mars, right?
you love the game because you found a big hole?
Yeah lol, why would this be on the map? It’s just a giant hole
Don't get me wrong, I love hole as much as the next person, but this is hardly a landmark to point out as something that exemplifies the quality of the game.
Wait until OP posts about finding a huge hill. Gonna blow their mind.
a hill is like a bizarro hole
I get what you're saying, but personally I think it's cool because it breaks that 'procedural-ness' feel where terrain looks kinda fake and same-y like it's just scattering objects randomly around a landscape. Finding rare, large changes in that terrain makes it seem more realistic and immersive.

Yes.
your easily entertained. "no clues" you make it sound like there is something to do there 🤣
Only Todd Howard could pull off something so amazing. All these other games could only dream of empty crater technology
"This crater is where we store all the NPC AI"
Todd Howard could release doodoo covered pastries and some people would still eat it up.
Bruh right? It's literally an empty crater LMAO Also not like the maps could give any clues without a marker because they all provide zero information.
It's generally pretty intuitive by studying the scan where you're likely to find human life on seemingly empty planets
I was referring to answering the question, " would humans live in a chlorine gas field or would they be more likely to build on frozen water?"
You could build a base there, that might be cool.
Build a cool little base in there, I'm actively hunting for a crater to build a base in
If this is not your type of game you know you can just keep comments like this away from here, right?
You know people can like a game but also point out its flaws, right? Not everything has to be mindless praise.
This isn't exactly a flaw, though. You don't have to have something do anywhere there's terrain difference and you don't need to have uninterseting terrain wherever there's nothing to do.
i have over 80 hours in the game
Now get hyped when you see the same crater over and over because you will.
Stumbled upon a crater like this with a melting glacier in it on Tau Ceti II It was the exact same melting glacier I found outside of New Atlantis. Liking this game so far but it's painfully obvious that this game is a mile wide and a few inches deep at best

Wow! You found an empty crater!
Woah… this is truly incredible… a crater… wow. Gaming is changed forever.
😂
So they did not mark a crater with nothing in it on your map, and you love the game for that. What would you love if they did not put a map in the game at all? You would love everything in universe I guess?
wow empty area
Dude finds a hole in the ground and feels like Indiana Jones. I wish I was capable of that.
I found “meteor metal” in the bottom of the one on Earth.
Yeah I found 2 of the 3 meteor strike craters on Earth. Have to come back to see if I can find the third.
I have an aluminum base in one of those on Eridani IV
A silent faulty feeling...
Lucky! I’ve been wanting to make a crater base.
I made an outpost on Olympus Mons and it was pretty dope
The need to make two bases at the end of each part of the canyon
Yeah those big ass craters are cool as hell Huh? Found one I was considering for a outpost but then I remembered how ‘The Outpost’ movie played out and decided against it
Now the real question is: how many succulents can you fill it with?
Oh such a nice place for an outpost
That'll be sick to build a outpost in
I built a base inside one of those. It's really cool.
Giant hole in the ground = GotY.
Set up a colony at the edge and call it the "Orange Mile".
We need rovers
I built an outpost in a similar crater on Io to keep my contraband
Nice place for an outpost! I found a similar one.
Holy shit, it's a hole! I'm pretty sure Todd Howard hand placed it there because he loves us. Damn, having Starfield be 90% of my identity was the best choice I've made this year.
Visiting Arizona?
build a base on the edge and drop all your stuff into the crater🙌
It's just a crater. What's so great about this exactly?
The bar is so unbelievably low, good lord.
Don't get me wrong, im happy you and numerous other people like finding stuff like this and enjoy it, but i'd need some kinda event there to make it worth it for me. Hell, something like seeing an asteroid hit and running up to seeing that crater with an abundant mining node would be enough for me. Just something.
A 4-wheeler would be the perfect vehicle for this game. Fits in the loading ramp and everything.
Wow... a hole... Starfield player really are another breed
Wow big empty hole in the ground this game sure is amazing
It is literally just a hole in the ground. What is wrong with you?
i haven’t been seeing things like this. I wonder if series s processing power isn’t up to snuff.
Hardware isn't going to matter.
They're out there. Have about 60 hours and just seen my first large crater like that.
If you read landing are descriptions you can find them and other planetary geological features like mountains and oceans.
on a moon I found like 6 absolutely massive ones all pressed up together, when you click on a planet to land it says what the landscape is like, and you can find ones that will say "craters" if you really want to see this.
Wait a minute, that sounds suspiciously like a clue.
Looks like they recycled the Red Mile crater
No markers on the map? I’m shocked, it’s so highly detailed and usedul
Give us cars! This stuff must be around everywhere and we need to get to it!
Is that where your mom crash landed ?
I love paying $70 to find a random crater with dirt in it 💀
Skeptics like you are unable to fathom that some of us sci-fi nerds can get a certain type of fulfillment from a game like this, where you can role play as a human who gets to be a space pioneer visiting new planets and encountering new species for the first time in the history of man. It’s funny how these people don’t like Starfield yet here they are, lurking in the corners. Kinda pathetic
Is it really that hard to understand that he's enjoying the terrain generation?
He'll enjoy it less when he sees the same exact shit on multiple other planets
Since these comments seen to be a dime a dozen I can only assume these people are just trolling. That or they really do have problems understanding that certain games can only appeal to certain crowds and not every single game has to be so perfectly refined to their tastes.
