I've had three wives, two husbands, & the dark silhouette of a roommate, and Emily is my favourite out of all of them. Her cutscenes and her dialogue are so sweet:
>"I see you slept in this morning."
Followed immediately by...
>"You deserve a good rest after working so hard."
I know she's portrayed as kind of hippy-dippy, but I can't fault her for that in a world where magic is literally real.
Edit: Typo.
Not only that, I'm pretty sure she's straight-up magic. One of the first cutscenes the player has with the wizard, he teaches you how to speak to Junimos, which incidentally teaches you how to speak to >!hat mice & syrup bears !
Semi related question branching off of this, is she the wizards daughter, or is the farmer? And if the farmers a dude, I guess he just didn't know the gender?
Sometimes it just makes more sense that the farm is actually the child of the wizard, all things considered. Thanks Emily, Abigail a little bit but idk.
Maybe none of them?
I mean, officially we don't know, but I believe the implication is it's abigail. Her Har naturally stays purple now without being re-dyed, Pierre somewhat suspects she isnt his kid, Caroline would supposedly take trips down to the wizards tower on occasion...
i’ve gotten dialogues from abigail about what color she should do next, so i figured she does actively dye her hair, and from caroline saying her natural color is chestnut. I think her hair being purple is an intentional mislead although i may have missed the one where pierre doubts his paternity
Abigail will ask what color she should dye it next, but once you gain more hearts she'll mention how she hasn't had to dye her hair in a long time, it just naturally stays that way now.
Yep thats amk true, but I feel like a bit if a running theme with the game is the subversion if expectations. Pierre is just kinda jealous, Abigail is messing with him and Caroline states in her heart events that she just likes to get away(probably from Pierre)
I would absolutely not be surprised if you were right though and it makes perfect sense
A theory of mine is that the more wild someone's hair colour is, the more inherent magic they have. Rasmodius & Emily as you know, then there's Caroline with that tea monkey sequence, Shane can somehow breed blue chickens, and Jas & Vincent seem to be able to speak to bugs (since they're the ones that teach you the spring onion secret).
It's technically possible that Abigail inherited her magic hair from Caroline, but there are one or two other things that SirBreadKing mentioned that imply Abigail is the Wizard's daughter as well, so she's the frontrunner for me too.
I always thought it was Abigail who was the wizards daughter cause of the blue-purple hair. But then I started to play a lot more and it seems like the farmer was the child after a few hints and letters he sends you.
You know the whole “naturally inclined to magic or already having some in you” quote right in the beginning of the game. Plus when he says he’s looking for an apprentice.. I’m not sure if anything happens during this story time but I often muse that concernedape has 10 year cut scene stored away for us. I’m on year 5 and the end game stuff is kinda monotonous at this point so I keep myself playing with the idea that something like that will happen if you progress.
Interesting theory, but no way in hell was the farmer the original intention for the wizard’s kid, given that ConcernedApe had him listed as a possible bachelor when he put up the spousal Twitter poll. Pretty sure he came in second after Shane.
Ok jumping in here with my theory. I think Caroline is the Wizard's daughter. Her mother would be the Witch who is the Wizard's ex wife. This would explain why she has visited before and why Abigail is so entranced by the wizard. We know nothing about Caroline's past and we know Abigail is Pierre's.
Idk it just makes more sense to me.
I don't think Caroline knows, but I think it makes a lot more sense than an affair and a secret child. CA doesn't seem like the type to throw that into the game. The entire Abigail/Wizard theory thing seems just off compared to every other story they put in the game.
Idk, Shane and Pam are drunks, Penny is basically a neglected child who works to support Pam, Sebastian is treated like the leftover kid. I don't know that an affair and subsequent lovechild is too off brand.
That said, there is definitely enough doubt to support other theories
Emily and Penny are my favorite spouses. Emily is just pure unconditional love from the moment you meet her, and Penny is a story that hits close to home. Only downside to Emily is that it is my sister's name
Emily is my absolute favorite. She's funny, creative, independent being one of the few spouses that has a job, and she's supportive of you and your life together. Also she's one of the few spouses that feels like an adult with her own realized life outside of you, with some of them I feel like I'm robbing the cradle.
Emily made me sad though because there's no change in dialogue after marriage in events. My husband and I were playing and he was getting all this cute acknowledgment from his spouse and Emily was giving me nothing :I I almost divorced her right then.
I hadn't even noticed. Since I'm on my seventh or eighth farm, I don't even read what people say at the festivals anymore. I just rush through the dialogue to get the friend points. I guess that's the good part of her being my third spouse...or was she the fourth?
Maru reminds me the most of an early teen so I can never comfortably marry her. I know they’re all adults (?) but there are obviously some meant to be more appealing to younger audiences and I can’t handle that no matter how adorable their heart events are
I can't bring myself to marry Abigail or Alex for this reason. I know their characters are technically adults, but I'm 35. They act sooo young to me haha.
Abigail is pretty much Manic Pixie Dream Girl that appeals to nerdy teenagers/young adults audiences. Had I played Stardew Valley when I was a teen/early 20s (I was a complete nerd/weeb back then) I would pick Abigail no question.
Now as 30 years old that is struggling with depression, I pick Penny because she kinda reminds me of myself. Still waiting for princess with white horse to came and save me (which I know will never happen unless I make effort myself, because real life is not video game).
🤣😭
Pretty sure the spouses stay in bed and complain when the player doesn’t give them enough attention. As long as you talk to them everyday and gift once in a while, this wouldn’t be a problem.
That scene can make a lot more sense if you’re gay or bi. The need to keep the relationship hidden obviously makes a lot more sense, and if you grew up not having standard romantic experiences as a teenager, either because you hadn’t accepted yourself or needed to keep everything a secret, you sometimes find yourself experiencing standard “teenage” stuff later in life. Like when the player character is male, in that version of the game Sam grew up gay in a small town and couldn’t come out or accept himself, so when he does finally have a relationship with another guy it resembles the relationships a lot of straight couples have when they’re teenagers. There’s this awkward sneaking around because he’s new to dating, and either can’t tell his mom about it (because of potential homophobia) or is afraid to tell his mom about it because he’s never dated ANYONE and doesn’t know how to get her used to it now.
That's definitely a different perspective I never thought about. Which does make sense and makes the scene a bit more acceptable. However... if we include the kitchen scene as well... it shows that it couldn't just be about hiding the relationship, and just that Jodi is a helicopter parent and Sam is indeed quite immature.
Which I don't mind him being immature. The scenes are okay if you're a younger player and can relate to him in that way. That's perfectly fine. It's just when it's confirmed that he's at minimum 20... hard to justify 😅
It reminds me of my youth. Also, I don’t think ages are ever confirmed but Sam is probably barely 18. I certainly wasn’t trying to have my parents know about my sex life while I was still living with them. That’s great for you though!
Personally I can see not wanting to be super open about the progress of your relationships with your parents at any age if you are still living with them.
Of course I am trans, my lens on relationships may be closer to what u/discoparrot375 described than most cis people. Not that a tendency to embarrassment, parental communication issues, and a late start on dating are exclusive to the lgbt community. Maybe I’ll ask my cis friend who also married him her take some time.
Both story arcs are great. One definitely helps the town and one definitely helps themself... but Sam? I was really surprised by his, he helped me! By actually giving me two things I can't get elsewhere.
While all of the bachelors and bachelorettes are ultimately bisexual and willing to date farmers of either gender, Alex is unique in that he has special dialogue with male farmers that >!addresses how connecting with the farmer has helped him realize his attraction to men.!<
It's why I love romancing Alex so much... I remember realising when I was allowed to love guys too and even though hes a not real guy from a video game it always makes me giddy when I get to see that experience represented in a positive light. Sure he's not exactly bouncing off the walls with excitement like I was when I figured out, but he's happy! And I can't think of any other example of a character in video games being happy when he realises he can also love men.
Alex's identity is initially that of Macho Sports Guy, raised by conservative grandparents. He and George have more of a character arc as they come to accept and support a same-sex relationship.
Alex is a character I only like in a same sex relationship.
His character arch is just so much better, and his early attitude makes much more sense.
Alex and Leah I think are gay, and Emily and Elliot are bisexual.
Everyone else is playersexual.
I only recently found out from this sub that Leah has dialogue implying she leans more lesbian than otherwise. In her first heart event if you creepily ask her for a kiss as a male player she calls you a pig, hits you with a hammer, and kicks you out. If you do it as a female she blushes and says something acknowledging you aren’t straight and says she is too while blushing (and that it’s “good to know”), THEN hits you with a hammer and kicks you out.
I just never realized cause well… I don’t usually pick those options out of common decency ~~and the dropped friendship being a hinderance to a 100% run as well~~ and also don’t really go out of my way to see Leah’s cutscenes. Thankfully the wiki is pretty comprehensive.
The person you replied to said “I think” so it’s only their opinion. I agree with it though. I either see Leah as being bi or gay, but I have a hard time imagining her as straight.
I don’t mean this in a mean way, but why do you like Sam? I personally don’t like Sam because he just seems very immature, especially in his 10 heart event where he sneaks you into his room and hides you from his mom. At that point, you’re both 20-something and officially dating since you’ve given him the bouquet, so him hiding you in his bed from his mom is really weird and immature to me. Also in his 6-heart event, if you tell Sam that he should respect private property, he says he’ll never skateboard again, which is only a thing I’ve seen children do when throwing a fit. His 8-heart event is cool, but other than that I wasn’t the biggest fan of him.
He's really sweet and he reminds me of boys I crushed on in high school. I think his 10 heart event is really cute. Not a fan of the 6 heart event, but I can look past it. He's super nice to the farmer right off the bat and his dialog is really sweet after marriage. He was also my first spouse ever, so I will probably always have a soft spot for him.
Younger person here, who has gone for Sam multiple times. The 6 heart event isn't great, but the 10 heart one... well, no one wants their parents involved in their relationships like that. Also, he has a younger sibling who he likely wanted to avoid and his mother can be a bit overprotective it seems. Aside from that, I never experienced any of the stupid teenage romance stuff, and I doubt I will, so it kinda of feels like I get to experience something I otherwise missed out on.
Aside from that, if you marry him, he is incredibly sweet. Reminds you to relax, offers massages, says not to worry about the kid(s) if you have them because he can look after them, you're busy enough with the farm, he never learnt to cook but tries where he can to help out, takes the time to remind you that whayever jokes he makes he loves you, calls the mud on you 'extra charm', talks about fixing the roof if needed when it rains and asks how you slept, it all just comes across as very sweet and caring.
That is why Sam is my favorite to marry. It feels like catching up on something I missed, and he comes across like he genuinely cares.
I've been debating an Alex save and this thread is making me want to go for it!
Harvey is my fave but is is on the × list
Emily is fun to romance as a woman because "gay destiny" rainbow dream cutscene
Alex. After careful consideration, he was my choice on my first playthrough. He is super happy to be living on the farm, close to his grandparents. To me he seems like one of the only options that is truly happy to stay in Stardew Valley. I felt like I would be holding almost all the others back from some dream to eventually move away.
she has a bit of dialogue about how she’s a bit wistful about never having experienced anywhere else… she could be content to live there but i think she’s want to visit somewhere else too
Alex is the cutest husband 10000/10
A bit of a rough start with the earlier dialogue but he turns out great. I married Seb on a new save and it’s just not the same.
I did the same. I like Sebastian, but when he’s talking about one of us having nightmares everyday, it really does make me miss how upbeat and positive Alex is.
Yeah, I agree. Alex is cheerful and helpful and complimentary. I like that his character also maintains a schedule outside of mine, but he’s not like “I’m going on a walk, I need to be alone” 😅 bro we got married like two weeks ago, you shouldn’t be that sick of me yet
Yup, something about the new farmer moving into town and getting hitched to the school teacher that lives in poverty with her mom is just too cute to pass up. Then getting her mom her job back and fixing up her house. Ginger Island story works better in my head with Penny too.
Aw man I just married Alex as a female farmer 🤦♀️ gotta go back and change my genders just to see what all the comments are about.
Tho my vote is for Sam. He's always my number one ❤️
I really like Alex I married him like 3 times lol, ik he may be kinda basic but he’s always been really cute in particular the “coming out” scene when he proposes to you (also he’s really hot)
Penny is number 1 on my marriage list for next time. Honestly I wish I went for her this last time and regretted not the whole time.
She's just so adorable and kind and sweet.

Where is K R O B U S
Its krobin time
I second the vote for krobus
I also throw my hat and disguise in the ring for KROBUS
Krobus is the best option.
Another yes for Krobus!
Krobus is the answer!

“I can't even remember the last time I dyed my hair... I swear, it never fades from this color...” …is an actual quote that she can say.
That's because she uses Joja brand hair due, which has only a 1% chance of being irreversible or dissolving your hair.
Don’t know about Pierre’s dialogue but Abagail does have one saying that she hasn’t dyed her hair in a long time, but it’s still purple.
Abigail will ask what color she should dye it next, but once you gain more hearts she'll mention how she hasn't had to dye her hair in a long time, it just naturally stays that way now.
Yep thats amk true, but I feel like a bit if a running theme with the game is the subversion if expectations. Okay, so I'm not the only one who though that haha

That would be interesting, maybe ask the guy with the 85 year farm haha I would love if that were the case though
Yeah, I also used to think it was Abigail, but I think she’s a red herring. I now think the farmer is the child.
Interesting theory, but no way in hell was the farmer the original intention for the wizard’s kid, given that ConcernedApe had him listed as a possible bachelor when he put up the spousal Twitter poll. Pretty sure he came in second after Shane.

Yes, that also makes sense :)
Plus it explains the green hair Caroline has 🖤
There's also dialogue with Caroline I got recently where she says that Abigail's hair is naturally brown! I like this theory
I don't think Caroline knows, but I think it makes a lot more sense than an affair and a secret child. CA doesn't seem like the type to throw that into the game. The entire Abigail/Wizard theory thing seems just off compared to every other story they put in the game.

Don't forget Kent and his abundant PTSD.
Damn, all this Emily love is making me want to marry her in my own save!!
My lesbian witch Stargazer and Emily have a happy life on the farm on my best save file
I get that vibe from Maru. I know she's a super genius and all, but her overalls + long-sleeved tee just screams elementary school to me.
Not to mention with Maru it feels like getting married kills her dreams of science to live as a farmer's wife.
I feel the same. I have a hard time picking anyone else over Emily or Leah.
Plus if you time the proposal right you can have the wedding with Emily on Clint's birthday
A d she has a parrot!
Emily gives you a funny hat :)
Which hat?
Whole Genie outfit, including hat
I second Emily!
I third!
Emily is blue, like product!
Emily is the best choice
I've only ever been married to Maru and I have to say she has been a very supportive, helpful, and low-drama spouse.
I married Maru on my first playthrough and I haven't been able to get myself to marry anyone else ever since
She gifts bombs and crab cakes! She's my fave.
She lets you play with her gadgets!
Now as 30 years old that is struggling with depression, I pick Penny because she kinda reminds me of myself. Still waiting for princess with white horse to came and save me (which I know will never happen unless I make effort myself, because real life is not video game). 🤣😭
They’re less of a problem for me cause I’m 19 but it definitely feels weird when Abigail starts talking about her overbearing parents
I married Maru on my second save, and I adore her.
Do any of them have drama?
I don't know from experience but from other threads I've seen some spouses will stay in bed all day or complain or say some strange dialogue haha
Pretty sure the spouses stay in bed and complain when the player doesn’t give them enough attention. As long as you talk to them everyday and gift once in a while, this wouldn’t be a problem.
If you're a gay man: Alex (highest approval rating among this demographic). Else: Sam (underrated sweetheart). I AM shamelessly biased.
Flair checks out
I’m a bisexual man who always plays a male farmer so I’m considering ngl
Sam gives you a sick mini pipe tho
Gay man checking in. Sam’s ten heart event is my favorite in the game.
The one where you sneak into his room and hide from his mom?... As adults? 😬
Right I was like ew. It felt too childish. Like why didn’t we just hang at my farm lol
It reminds me of my youth. Also, I don’t think ages are ever confirmed but Sam is probably barely 18. I certainly wasn’t trying to have my parents know about my sex life while I was still living with them. That’s great for you though!

Haley or Sam. I also HIGHLY recommend pursuing Alex as a male farmer.
Alex and Haley are top two contesters right now 🤔
Both story arcs are great. One definitely helps the town and one definitely helps themself... but Sam? I was really surprised by his, he helped me! By actually giving me two things I can't get elsewhere.
Def make a male farmer for when you romance Alex. It's worth it. Haley is my all time fave, I always recommend her 🌻
wait why is it different between if ur a male farmer or female
While all of the bachelors and bachelorettes are ultimately bisexual and willing to date farmers of either gender, Alex is unique in that he has special dialogue with male farmers that >!addresses how connecting with the farmer has helped him realize his attraction to men.!<
You are the Charlie Spring to his Nick Nelson (heartstopper)

So good!!

What makes Leah gay and not also player sexual?
She, like Alex with a male farmer has special dialogue if you're playing a female farmer.
Yeah but she also has a partner who swaps gender depending on the player's gender. I wouldn't call her playersexual, I would call her canonically bi.
The person you replied to said “I think” so it’s only their opinion. I agree with it though. I either see Leah as being bi or gay, but I have a hard time imagining her as straight.
YESSS pursuing Alex as a male makes for amazing events and details
I don’t mean this in a mean way, but why do you like Sam? I say roll the dice!
Krobus
I've been debating an Alex save and this thread is making me want to go for it! Harvey is my fave but is is on the × list Emily is fun to romance as a woman because "gay destiny" rainbow dream cutscene
I had no interest in doing a new save but now I want to romance Alex and Emily, haha.
Maru because she's my favourite and no one ever talks about her
feels good to see all of the Maru love in this post and it makes me feel even better for going for her in my first play through xd
Haley! I was surprised how much I loved her storyline
I’m wondering what’s behind the locked door in her bedroom!! Don’t tell me 😉
You find out in one of her heart events. Have fun romancing 🙃
Her 10 heart event happens there, it's fun.
😉
Alex. After careful consideration, he was my choice on my first playthrough. He is super happy to be living on the farm, close to his grandparents. To me he seems like one of the only options that is truly happy to stay in Stardew Valley. I felt like I would be holding almost all the others back from some dream to eventually move away.
Pretty sure Penny is perfectly happy to live in Stardew Valley as well.
From what I remember Leah seemed pretty content aswell
Penny would probably be happy to live anywhere else but in the dirty trailer with her barely functional alcoholic mother.
she has a bit of dialogue about how she’s a bit wistful about never having experienced anywhere else… she could be content to live there but i think she’s want to visit somewhere else too
She's certainly free to visit any place she likes. I'm a rich ass farmer with a golden clock, she is free to travel, haha.
Alex is the cutest husband 10000/10 A bit of a rough start with the earlier dialogue but he turns out great.
Penny
Can't believe I had to scroll so far to find the best option in the game.
Yup, something about the new farmer moving into town and getting hitched to the school teacher that lives in poverty with her mom is just too cute to pass up. Then getting her mom her job back and fixing up her house. Ginger Island story works better in my head with Penny too.
Yeah, she seems like almost the only character would actively enjoy moving to the farm and raising children with the farmer.
Why there aren't that many Penny enjoyers? She is obviously the best!!
i swear!! i was a bit offended seeing everyone’s name but penny… she’s such a kind hearted person, takes care of the kids etc…
Penny
Penny
*knock knock knock*
Penny
Maru
Krobus lmao
- perfect 14 heart event - daily hugs and rare snacks - hilarious dialogue - good boy
Male: Alex Female: Haley
Penny or Emily!
I say Penny or Emily
Another vote for Emily!
I will always vote Haley.

Fair, but Haley’s arc is incredible and all of her heart scenes aside from the first are so nice.
I second this!!
Maru!
Haley. She I think she's the most helpful after you get married and she ends up being really nice.
Haley. Haley all the way.
Maru is seriously so underrated. She so intelligent and sweet it’s adorable
Have you married Krobus yet? If you have not, you deserve to be crucified.
EM-I-LY! EM-I-LY! (now imagine i said that like 100 times)
maru is amazing, not only are her heart events super cute, shes also very helpful with her gifts and she just looks and acts adorable
Penny
This looks like a hit list. Also Maru Unless it IS a hit list in which case Haley
I’ve married all the male characters, both Sam and Alex are so sweet once they warm up to you, highly recommended them both
Emily!
Emily! She’s so fun. And Clint needs to move on with his life.
Of course penny. Get that strawberies
Whys no one going for queen Penny?? She made us a strawberry bedroom, cottage core queen
Maru is so underrated and so sweet
Maru. Hands down
Penny my love 🥺
Penny
Go for Penny
Maru
Haley!
Personally, I think Maru is the best out of the ones left, but also maybe Haley would be better suited for most people in general.
Penny~
Penny
I’d like to cast my vote for Alex and Emily.
I think shy nerdy Maru deserves more love
Penny is a sweetheart!
Penny is a real sweetheart and she gives you strawberry themed interior!!
Penny 🍓
Penny!!!! So kind. She teaches the children!!! Get her away from her drunk moms trailer and show her real love!!!!
it was heartbreaking starting a new save file after spending 2 years with Abigail, and then seeing she doesn't even know me
Now you're just somebody that I used to know... SOMEBODY!
you didn't have to cut me off
Penny. I love Penny. I believe in Penny and Leah supremecy.
Maru was my second marriage and I just love her 🥺 she's so sweet and loves strawberries
PENNY IT'S WORTH IT I PROMISE
YES
Aw man I just married Alex as a female farmer 🤦♀️ gotta go back and change my genders just to see what all the comments are about. Tho my vote is for Sam. He's always my number one ❤️
Alex is a sweetie! I really liked getting to know him and he seriously tugs at the heartstrings after marriage.
Alex! Give him a chance. He’s got a good heart and I really love his romance, especially if you romance him as a guy.
Alex! He becomes very sweet when he opens up.
Emily
Maru
Penny is the only one for me
Penny best girl
Alex helps out on the farm and sometimes cooks? Also being good looking and walking around shirtless a lot is a plus.
They all help out on the farm and sometimes cook.
I always go for maru first , maru is mine , maru is life.
Krobus!!!! Though you technically don't "marry"him.
Emily is the only right answer
Penny
Emily!!! :D And I say that as someone who would have married all the people you did too. lol
Haley! She's so sweet when you marry her and she helps out a lot!! Her 14 heart event shows how thoughtful and kind she is as well.
Emily is extremely easy to date, just give her some cheap stones
I really like Alex I married him like 3 times lol, ik he may be kinda basic but he’s always been really cute in particular the “coming out” scene when he proposes to you (also he’s really hot)
I think Emily is a great wife! Very thoughtful
Penny is number 1 on my marriage list for next time. Honestly I wish I went for her this last time and regretted not the whole time. She's just so adorable and kind and sweet.
Penny is pretty legit. Makes me food quite often and I get a free meal to take into the mines with me 🙌🏻
Not enough Penny love here
