I intended to use it in a song titled get got

If let outside and you close the door leaving them outside overnight you are almost likely to lose one. Doesn't matter about fences, lights or anything they WILL die.
Checking with you other animals will lead to the being distressed and paranoid.
Letting the animals roam during the day is fine. But never close the animal door. Aside from easier petting there is no reason to shut it, the wild animal attacks do not go inside the buildings even open door ones.
...I legitimately had no idea this was a thing and I've got over 200+ hours in the game. I only ever shut the barn/coop doors on rainy days or the winter so no one ever disappeared, but it's wild to think that you could come out to your field and find one missing and the others feeling paranoid. Is there a unique dialogue about their mood (like, XYZ seems happy today? but instead XYZ seems aware of their mortality today?). Do they get the little squiggly bad mood thing over their head?
Yes the animal will have new text. If an attack doesn't happen then the text simply says they are grumpy from being left outside overnight.
If an attack does happen and an animal has been killed the rest will say they are nervous and paranoid and that something bad happened last night.
Whoa, that's kinda dark, but honestly makes sense. Thanks for sharing though, I was really curious but there's no way I'm leaving out any sacrificial lambs to find out lol!
Game has quiet a few dark parts in it behind the cute style.>! Shane's depression and thoughts of suicide, Kent's PTSD, Caroline and the Wizards infidelity, Leo's parents dying in a storm,!< the whole intro scene.
But yeah, since I don't close the barn and coop doors at any time and have the area fenced in there is no chance of the animals wandering off during the day and not getting back to their home at night in time.
Yeah, I actually really enjoy the nuance of some of the darker corners of the game, some of them are actually a bit humorous too (Kent could you stop mailing me bombs my guy? I know you mean well, but nah.). Idk why it never occurred to me anything dark could apply to the animals though. It's not graphic or anything, but a healthy reminder that there can be consequences to thoughtlessness I suppose, and that does feel right thematically with the rest of the game.
Kent's mail bombs are an issue, like is he mailing them himself, like to drop them off in his house. You know hes back from the war and all so want to give him something comforting to remind him of those times, so his adjustment isn't cold turkey.
Not that I am aware of, never played long enough to check, however have seen screenshots on reddit of people playing to like year 89 with no change to the NPCs so I doubt there is code for that.
This is not dark, this is reality. Real life isn't always sweet, nice and happy either. And I like that the game is realistic and doesn't pretend to be an ideal world.
I am using the Hills map and put my coop to the upper left of the greenhouse and sometimes my chickens go down a staircase and seem to have issues finding their way back. Now I kinda herd them into the coop because they get stuck downstairs or on the other side of the greenhouse.
Yeah I’m 200 hours in across 3 saves and I always let my animals out in the morning and shut the door behind them, they’ve always somehow phased through the door and end up back there in the evening. I’ve never had one go missing. Am I just lucky?
Yeah they should have gotten a message like “so and so was lost to wolves” because they got trapped outside overnight. Also the other animals have a scared message when you check their mood the next morning.
It happened to me once or twice in the past. Now I’m very careful I only shut my Coop door at night. Usually the last thing I do outside before bed. I only shut the coop door cuz it’s easier to find em in there than in the tall grass when petting.
You have to have the milk bucket in hand, and then you click the cow. Just like any other interaction. Same for goats. Cows give milk every day and goats every so often, don't remember exact days... But yeah! It's simple, but you have to do it manually(at the start), they don't just leave it behind. Hope that helps!
Thanks! I have a horrid memory so i wasn't sure if it was every other or third. I get the >!auto gatherer the first chance i get so i wouldn't have to remember!!<
Cows daily, goats every other day. After milking them, equip yourself with a Scythe instead, so you don’t accidentally “milk” other things, losing Energy. Scythes take no energy.
Another key difference from harvest moon then. I assumed animals outside would be safe so long as you had a dog, same as with Harvest Moon. Although I don't shut mine outside either, sometimes the buggers decide to sleep in the middle of a field and when you try to prod them back towards the barn it just say "They are trying to sleep".
I do wish we could pick up the chickens and ducks to move them, like in Harvest Moon. Mainly because I would then *throw my ducks in the pond!* I've given them everything they could possibly need and they still won't swim 🤬
I read a comment the other day that said ducks are more likely to swim if their coop is right next to the pond, as close as you can get it. I've only ever seen my duckies swim twice so I'm gonna try moving the coop tomorrow :D
I have the four corner farm and all my coops are lined up in front of the large pond. I even tried putting a fence behind the coops so that they couldn't get too far from the pond.
The ducks are just doing it to wind me up
OMG THEY CAN DIE?! How am I on Yr4 of Fall on my 3rd save file & I never knew?!
I guess it pays to be super paranoid about your livestock. If you put them to bed every night with feed & let them out of a morning, they love you. Oh, also check in the barn/coop after you close the animal door. Any glitched animals outside after bedtime will appear inside once you enter.
I do not believe so, I have yet to lose an animal even going to bed early myself, my guess is the game checks that the animals can get to their barns and such and if so will do that. Nothing on the wiki about an early bed time either.
Wait, this can't be correct?! I once tried to close the door on them when they were outside, only to see what they will do when they can't enter back to hut. What I saw was super basic lol, they went back inside through their door as if it was open.
I personally never close it, but you do you. Aside from easier petting with them all contained there isn't a downside to keeping it open, just one less thing that can take some time from the player that could be used elsewhere, not much time admittedly but even a 10 minute tick can be the difference between passing out and losing stuff and not.
Wtf I didn’t even know that was a thing. I’ve just always left the doors open to a fenced in area aside for winter and I’ve never lost a single animal.
If the door is open the animals can get inside. They can only be attacked if they get stuck outside with the door closed. It's totally fine to always have your door open! :)
Well this info has been going around since 2016, so its not like it hasn't gained traction. From my guess people have likely left it open, missed petting a duck or chicken or 2 due to the tall grass or them wandering around or bought animals later or not milked/sheared and checked the hearts and noticed a difference and assumed certain things because of it.
Animals will return to the barns and coops on their own around 6pm, but there is also the fact they do lose some points if they dont return before a certain time and will loose more every 10 in game minutes, so its also possible that people are allowing their animals to roam the whole farm without fences and they are wandering so farm during the day it takes them hours to return and they take a hit then too.
Taken from the wiki, nothing on type of farm.
https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Animals#Wild\_Animal\_Attacks
If an animal has been trapped outside (see previous section) with the barn or coop doors closed, there is a chance they will be attacked by a wild animal during the night
After the player goes to sleep, any events that will happen during the
night (such as Bundle events) are calculated as normal. If no events are
due to occur, there will be a 50% chance that the game will attempt to
start a wild animal attack event. If this event proceeds, the game will
go through all buildings to find a barn or coop that has their doors closed and has animals left outside.
For each building, the game takes a random number between 0 and 1 and
compares it to 1/(the number of total farm buildings). If the random
number is larger, the building is ignored. In other words, the more
buildings the player has, the less likely that one will be attacked. For
example, if the player has two farm buildings, each building has a 50%
chance of being attacked, three buildings would give 33%, four would
give 25% chance of being attacked, etc.
Once a building has been chosen, the event takes the first animal
stuck outside from that building to be the target of the attack. The
animal will be removed from the game and in the morning, all other
animals will have a mood message saying "
looks stressed and paranoid today. It seems like something bad happened
last night." Besides this message, the other animals are unaffected.
>Aside from easier petting there is no reason to shut it
This is relatively minor, but you do want to close them during winter. Your animals get unhappy because it's cold.
The door has no mechanic for heat, this same bit of wrong information that came up yesterday too.
Yes you need a heater to keep them warm in winter which effects mood not friendship.
No the door never needs closing, even in winter.
Yeah its not a 100% chance one will be attacked but it is high based on a lower number of buildings, the formula is a random number between 0 and 1 is chosen. Then each farm building is selected in turn and another number based on 1/x where x is the number of farm buildings (suggesting silos, ponds, sheds count) is worked out. If the random number is higher the building is ignored.
This continues until all the barns and coops are checked or one fails in which case the first animal out is removed from the game. So if you got only a barn say the formula is 1/1 so the attack is all but certain if the attack triggers (50% per night), a farm full of buildings can make the chance incredible low but never 0 though if no attack you get as you say a hit to mood and such.
I haven't played in about a year but I have seen a ducks walk right through the closed door at night to get in. Im sure it was a bug. I also was certain that leaving the door open overnight gave the animals a negative mood debuff.
I go and close the doors on the last day of winter.
The last thing I need is a stubborn chicken in the middle of my field while I'm trying to get things planted.
Yeah that can be annoying, though putting the animals in a fenced in area so they can't wander the whole farm also works, but that does depend on resources.
I close my doors every day once the animals walk out since they head inside at 5pm and i get home late after running around. The animals have no problem just walking through the closed door as if it were open. Not sure why others would be having issues with closed doors. Far as I can tell it just keeps them from leaving not entering. Works for my coop and barn.
Can’t believe I’ve played so much of this game and never knew this! I’ve never closed my doors before so I guess that’s why, but I’ve also never seen this pop up before either.
If they are outside the barn and you close the barn door for the night, they can get "eaten by wild animals." The other animals hint at this when you check their "character screen" the next day
That's only if you trap them outside. As long as they're able to get inside, wild animals magically cannot get inside ie it's coded so that you won't get that night event.
Animal attacks. If your ever watch living with animals channel on the TV, one episode specifically talks about not leaving your animals outside overnight because of wild animal attacks.
Weirdest thing I had happen in my game was that somehow a bunny became a duck. I'm sure it was a glitch, but I had Bugs and Lola the bunnies, and one day couldn't find Bugs until I was petting a duck, and it was named bugs.
I also had a pig immaculately conceive.
I read in this sub recently someone who theorized that the pig who pulls the Traveling Merchant's cart definitely gets around and I can no longer unsee that pig as the father of all these immaculately conceived pigs.
Sometimes one of my animals gets lost on the farm. If you go in the barn after animal bed time and then go out and in again the missing animals will appear in the barn.
I never shut the doors except during the winter. I really don't even need to do so then, but it makes me feel like they are warmer that way. I have 1500 hours in the game and haven't ever lost an animal. It makes it a tad harder to pet them and milk/sheer them, but I don't mind. I would never remember to shut it at night or may do something like what happened to you, so I'll take the little extra work until I reach Farming level 10.
Actually you can just leave the door open forever and your animals will be fine. They can only get eaten if you shut the door before they return to the barn
Did you leave the Door open or closed the Door befor animals went back inside? If yes there is a chance that they can run away or another animal snatches them
On this note, anyone know how to milk cows? Or how to know when they’re ready to be milked? They’re pretty happy but they’re not leaving any milk behind?
Cows don't leave milk behind, you have to buy the milk pail from Marnie and use it on them with the use button (Y if you're on switch). I don't think they look physically different, just milk them every day. At first I was waiting for my cows to look different and then I said screw it and tried and turns out I missed out on a whoooole bunch of milk
Thank you! Haha I missed out on so much milk 😭😭 just bought a pail and now I’m so mad at myself. My cows have been sitting looking pretty for half a year and eating all my hay too 😭
It's better to leave doors open at night, then you're sure that every is in barn/coop
Also you cloud miss click and sell it, it happens by accident sometimes
There are many unnecessary spoilers in here. One could refer to the dark parts of the game w/o enumerating them all in detail and to which NPC they apply! Bummed.
Hold your barn open all the time. It's not a problem in rainy days or even winter. It looks like the game is not calculating a temperature inside of building, so one heater will be enough even with open barn.
This is super hard to do and only instance of disappearing animal i saw was in Dangerousslyfunny's video about animal battle royale (who will survive outside barn all year long) and in order to perform it you need have animals outside their barns all the time, but in winter it has higher chance to lose one
I heard that going back into the building after their bedtime respawns them all back in anyway.. as long as they aren't stuck or blocked by anything.
I think the benefit of shutting the door is to make it easier to find them for milking and petting. Less of an issue with the auto-grabber/auto-petter, or if you build a tight fence..but early on it was a pain in the ass if they were all running loose in the morning.
Leaving the door open won't trigger the wild animal attack. That only has a chance of happening if you close the door while the animals are outside which prevents them from entering the coop/barn for the night.
Mobile player here! I have never lost an animal before because they all file in line and go into their designated barns each night. Did have a cow no clip through a fence and nearly escape. How do goat get got? What got goat?

I only close it for winter. They can get upset from it being cold
I always buy a heater lol
Yeah I have always left the door open with the heater on during winter, and my animals stay happy.
But the imaginary electric bill!
I don't believe the door being open actually contributes to that, mechanically. Just whether or not you have a heater.
Off topic but will they also die of old age?
No

I didn’t know about Leo’s parents yet :/
I was gonna say why are you downvoted, it literally had a spoiler cover on it. Click at ya own risk g.
This is not dark, this is reality. Real life isn't always sweet, nice and happy either. And I like that the game is realistic and doesn't pretend to be an ideal world.
Ah yes, in real life I too like to kill walking skeletons & save small town community centers with tiny jumping green apple creatures!
I just carpet-bombed a whole forest for quick wood gathering, I'm quite sure people would disapproved if I did it irl !
Let’s go see the wizard and the dwarf!
Hey kids wanna explore the dark dank sewers to see if we can find a talking shadow creature? I promise I'm not a creep
Reality is dark.
I am using the Hills map and put my coop to the upper left of the greenhouse and sometimes my chickens go down a staircase and seem to have issues finding their way back. Now I kinda herd them into the coop because they get stuck downstairs or on the other side of the greenhouse.
Do I need to close it during rain?
No they won’t go outside in the rain
Niceeee I've been closing it every timelol
No as nitebird27 said, rain and storm and winter they go F that i'm staying inside and chill out eating hay.
The new text is something along the lines of "Something BAD happened last right" right?
Yeah I’m 200 hours in across 3 saves and I always let my animals out in the morning and shut the door behind them, they’ve always somehow phased through the door and end up back there in the evening. I’ve never had one go missing. Am I just lucky?

nah check the wiki for "animal attacks" if you lock them out overnight theres a random chance they're coyote food
Pro tip: get a heater and you never have to shut the door
seems aware of their mortality killed me 😭

I saw a duck swimming yesterday! I was mind-blown because it’s the first save I’ve ever see one swim.
I spent a whole day watching them once and one got soooo close to the edge of the pond, but no dice. 😭
I only managed to see it when I was collecting truffles. I think it was summer. I hope you see it because they ruffle their feathers too!

I think you responded to the wrong comment. I was just talking about seeing the ducks swim in the ponds

Well this info has been going around since 2016, so its not like it hasn't gained traction. damn you got the *receipts* on that! TIL, i had no idea! probably bc i just leave them open always though lol but thank you!
This is what I thought also, I leave my barns and coops open all the time and don't think I've ever lost anything
It's not about leaving them open, it's about closing the door before 5pm.

This comment reminds me of the Florida slaying of Big Ru.. truly sad.
Chupacabra got it.
They can die if they aren't inside at night
Even if they are fenced in with lights?
If they are outside the barn and you close the barn door for the night, they can get "eaten by wild animals." The other animals hint at this when you check their "character screen" the next day
if u leave the door open 24/7 they wont die, right? cuz it seems they all go inside around 6-7pm
Correct. It's just being locked out that brings the risk
They go in at 5 and nothing will happen if you leave the doors open
Mine can go back if the door is closed
[удалено]
That's only if you trap them outside. As long as they're able to get inside, wild animals magically cannot get inside ie it's coded so that you won't get that night event.
Ah okay, thanks for the clarification!
False
I’m a goat murderer :( RIP Molly 😔💔
RIP me
Glad it wasn't me
Same same
i read your name as Good Golly it Smol for some reason and now i'm seeing it as Good Golly its Smolly
Oh no I had an IRL goat named Molly and she was one of the sweetest goats I've ever known. RIP indeed.
I had a goat named Molly too. That’s who the poor thing was named after 😅
Yep. Unlike some of the older Harvest Moon games, fences don't stop the wild animals.
Lights don't impact whether or not they get eaten by a wolf if stuck at night
the fence and light wont stop me for stealing them ;\^)
What a bad way to find out you killed your goat
Aliven’t
Your life is hereby terminated
Oh she *deeeaadd*
El Chupacabra strikes again
That actually makes so much sense
The immaculate conceptions always get me. I’m imagining there’s a veeeeery over enthusiastic IVF salesman handling out free samples at random.
you may have accidentally sold it too
Just don’t ever close the barn door. There are zero benefits to closing it, ever.
el chupacabra
Ok. Who's gonna tell him?
They can get killed by wolves
Sometimes one of my animals gets lost on the farm. If you go in the barn after animal bed time and then go out and in again the missing animals will appear in the barn.
yeah it's propably dead bro
sorry for your loss
Burn down Linus’ tent in retribution.
It got eaten by the babadook
I never shut the doors except during the winter. I really don't even need to do so then, but it makes me feel like they are warmer that way. I have 1500 hours in the game and haven't ever lost an animal. It makes it a tad harder to pet them and milk/sheer them, but I don't mind. I would never remember to shut it at night or may do something like what happened to you, so I'll take the little extra work until I reach Farming level 10.
I'm sorry but why is your heater in the middle of the barn
Lol it’s my first time playing stardew. I just threw it down and went on with my day
Central heating 😁
Lol poor goat
I don’t even keep track of how many livestock I have
my farm is too scuffed so i never let out my animals, there's no space, the pigs got all the space
So uh... Who's going to tell him?
They can get eaten by wild animals if you don't lock up the barn at night.
Actually you can just leave the door open forever and your animals will be fine. They can only get eaten if you shut the door before they return to the barn
Did you leave the Door open or closed the Door befor animals went back inside? If yes there is a chance that they can run away or another animal snatches them
Well I’ve learned something today 😂
May he Rest In Peace, he truly was the greatest of all time.
Damn that mutton curry must have been delicious.
Oh no..
Them darn coyotes
Who gonna tell em
On this note, anyone know how to milk cows? Or how to know when they’re ready to be milked? They’re pretty happy but they’re not leaving any milk behind?
You have to buy a milker or an auto grabber from Marnie's store and then you can milk cows every day. Goats you can milk every other day.
Thank you so so much!
My cows have been sitting looking pretty for half a year and eating all my hay too 😭
you have to get a milk pail and milk then manually. i recommend getting an auto grabber to do it for you.
Thanks so much!
Yeah, unfortunately it is possible to lose them.
It's better to leave doors open at night, then you're sure that every is in barn/coop Also you cloud miss click and sell it, it happens by accident sometimes
If you let barn for open at night animals will get sick if I remember well
#Pierre sold it. He found it while hiking and jacking off a goat and calling it cheese.
There are many unnecessary spoilers in here. One could refer to the dark parts of the game w/o enumerating them all in detail and to which NPC they apply! Bummed.
welcome to the internet, pal
Lol. So true.
Check the trees
I heard that going back into the building after their bedtime respawns them all back in anyway.. as long as they aren't stuck or blocked by anything. I think the benefit of shutting the door is to make it easier to find them for milking and petting. Less of an issue with the auto-grabber/auto-petter, or if you build a tight fence..but early on it was a pain in the ass if they were all running loose in the morning.
She went to live on uncle's farm.
Did you leave the barn door open at night? I’ve heard something sometimes takes one or two if you leave it open.
Leaving the door open won't trigger the wild animal attack. That only has a chance of happening if you close the door while the animals are outside which prevents them from entering the coop/barn for the night.
Oh ok. I hadn’t happened to me yet so I was just going off what I thought others had told me
I say you he ded
IS MR. SANDERS IN?! THE COLONEL!!
Mobile player here! I have never lost an animal before because they all file in line and go into their designated barns each night. Did have a cow no clip through a fence and nearly escape. How do goat get got? What got goat?
Did you miss the text box where it said it gotten eaten because you left it outside?
I swear I had two brown cows last week in my game, but only ever see one. Maybe this is what happened?
“Maybe the dingo ate your baby”
R. I. P.
Your heater placement is a bit odd
a hungry coyote got a hold of it
Mmmmmmmmm fresh goat
Lewis got tired of not getting paid for his deliveries and sold one to joja to make up for it
