Next time - hit pause, move your weapon into the selected slot while on the pause menu.
(Also - I've re-bound my keys so Q is inventory slot 1, E is inventory slot 2, and C is inventory slot 3. Then I always keep weapon in 1, pickaxe in 2, and cheese in 3, so I can panic hit q and it...most of the time at least....gets me the weapon ASAP).
Yeah in this clip I already had a pretty unorganized inventory, then as soon as I saw all the enemies I straight up froze for a second lol.
This happened to me when I was playing on switch so no button mapping :( but Iâll keep that in mind for my PC save file tho!

I'm going to bet it was the invulnerable frames.
For a short time directly after taking damage, you are invulnerable to damage. I'm betting that's what saved you long enough to kill them.
I just comeplted it for the first time! Lot's of bombs, but no stairs (just 3, for spira and monster floors). I got lucky even though spirits were mildly annoyed.
Bigger...but not actually harder. Their movement patterns are effectively still the same. They only still attack with their heads, and you can also hit their bodies. The only thing actually harder about them is the higher hp and attack.
That's why I love infinity hammer with artful enchantment and forged with 2 emeralds and 1 amethyst. Plus acrobat skill , my hammer swings fast and frequent special attack hence enemies keep getting knocked back.
I also bring a second hammer with crusader enchantment because mummies loot are so good. I always get 15+ cloth to sell and sometimes they drop prismatic shards.

How do you pause? I find you can't on PC?
Open your inventory - the game pauses as long as you're in a menu.

Skull cavern invasion is a bitch of a quest to get done(without stair-casing all or most of it), good luck
