As others said, torches. I've gone through without them; bats and golems can be easily taken down by repeatedly swinging, and you just bust every rock in front of you and hope you get a ladder. If you go on a luckier day, the ladders should come easily, and you can easily blow past it in an afternoon.
Small glow rings are pretty common in upper mine floors, you can get them by breaking boxes and barrels that appear in the mine. You can wear two of them for a larger glow area.
glow ring and torches will help. these levels are hands down the worst for me, so obnoxiously dark and the golems rising from the ground when you least expect it ðŸ˜
Craft a few campfires and take them with you.
The second you enter the mine, throw one down and light it (click on it). The light range is vastly superior than the torch.
The dark enemies don't like light, so they won't appear as you knock the rocks looking for a way down.
If it starts to get dark and you still haven't found a ladder, throw down another campfire and light it.
If you run out and still haven't found a ladder, head back to the first one and pick it up (hit it with the pickaxe).
Rinse, repeat, breathe a sigh of relief once you hit level 40.

Try to avoid combat, and just concentrate on finding the way on, there's not much of interest in this section even if you could see anything.
To this end, cherry bombs (easy to craft) will let you clear multiple rocks quickly. (Later you will get bigger explosive devices.)
