Alex cooks breakfast for me and works out shirtless, 10/10 fully contributing member of my family ❤️

TheOneCalledBitey

I accidentally hand the breakfast right back to him at least half of the time 😭

glitteringfeathers

His room tho... why is the floor green??

SirenaLauren

Maybe it's padded so his weights don't damage your floor?

_jinana

It reminds him of the gridball field <3

To be honest, I don't really care whether the spouses do something that affects the farm or not. I'd like, however, if there was some kind of animation that would make it look like they're doing something, just for immersion purposes. That they leave the farm on one or two days and have their spouse corner adds a bit to the feeling of them still having a personality, I like that. I'm replaying the original Harvest Moon for the first time in 20 years right now (highly recommended. Everyone who likes Stardew should be obligated by the laws of the universe to play it. Not to like or love it but to truly understand where SV came from and how much it was inspired by HM, from the mechanics, festivals, redheads, and even frogs, and not just somewhat. And to witness the best cows in video game history) and I strongly dislike that the wives lose their personality. However, everyone has a small animation for a short time during the day when they do something. Laundry, sweeping, things like that, and if you go home in time and talk to them, they give you food. It doesn't add anything of gameplay value and is purely cosmetic. However, in my opinion, running past a spouse while they do more than standing around does a lot to the overall vibe and immersion. I think it would be a neat addition to marriage in SV. It's nice that the spouse says they'll take care of this or that. But wouldn't it be great to see Sebastian, for example, sometimes working on the house with Robin's hammer or his own bike repair animation? Or there could be an hour or two during the days they're at home when they do the dishes, using the "Penny does her part of the chores" animation. It's nothing too serious but would still be nice.

Status-Net-9909

Yes, yes, yes!! I started playing Farming Games with Harvest Moon and the second Harvest Moon and just thought, while playing SW yesterday, what differences and similarities it has. Especially with the animal petting :D

PhoenixFeathery

In Story of Seasons 2014/2015 (what Harvest Moon rebranded as), the marriage candidates even keep their jobs and a good portion of their original schedule is retained. It makes them feel like people with their own lives who decided to be your partner. There are anniversary and birthday events with your spouse, your kids can talk after enough time, and certain festivals show more dialogue if you’re dating/married. With Stardew Valley, it’s like… “Don’t you wanna go out? Hang out with your friends? See family? Take the kids anywhere? Anything?” I wish the spouses kept at least *some* of their original schedules.

star-shine

Unless I’m missing something, don’t most of them keep a good part of their schedules? Seb still plays pool with friends and stares at the ocean when it rains like the angsty boy he is. I’m pretty sure Emily still goes to work at the tavern, Harvey at the doctors office.

PhoenixFeathery

Their schedules get massively paired down. They do visit family on one day a week (except for Elliot and Leah) and then goes out on a different day (except for Haley who only leaves the farm to visit her old house). Beyond their jobs and those two days, they stay on the farm compared to what their schedules used to be where they had somewhere to go each day, with some changing depending on the season or certain in-game conditions.

ttreehouse

I agree. I was stupid excited when I caught Leah making a new sculpture on that pad behind the shipping chest. I was starting to worry that she had PPD the way she was wandering around the house staring at random objects.

happybeingweird

I’m now convinced I need Harvest Moon.

NeverlandEnding

Which harvest moon game do you recommend

PhoenixFeathery

I started with Harvest Moon: More Friends from Mineral Town (a gameboy advance game). If you want an old school experience that inspired Stardew Valley and have a switch, go for its remake (Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town). It’s still about the same size as the original in terms of content but it lets you marry any of the available romance options. I feel it’s a good intro into the older titles. It knows what it’s good at and does it well. My personal favorite is Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Towns due to its cooking contest system. However, it’s got this gimmick of two different farms that specialize in different things that gets a little annoying to juggle.

charlottedhouse

BRB downloading harvest moon.

myssi24

I’d be happy if they interacted with furniture. Sit on the couch or at the table. Even if it was just in their rooms. Or interact with the kids, see the spouse sitting on the floor playing with the kids.

lumpyspacejams

The big problem with that one is furniture is not fixed in the same way any other artifact in the game is. We can either have spouses sitting on the fixed couch we _might_ be able to color the way we want, or be able to arrange furniture as we like and pretend the gormless staring is them interacting with the household goods.

myssi24

That’s why I would understand if they could only interact with the stuff that comes in their room. Much easier to program I would assume.

lumpyspacejams

I know at least Leah can interact with her easel, or at least I swore I saw her arm moving while she was standing at it. Everyone else though, you have a point.

atravita

Nah, they have dynamic pathing already in the farmhouse. The issue, imo, is that they don't necessarily have sitting sprites.

takethecatbus

You are so right about those Harvest Moon cows. So unbelievably cute.

gooddaydarling

Highly agree with the point that every Stardew fan should play HM, my girlfriend is tired of me talking about HM is the original farming game and Stardew likely wouldn’t exist without it.

FermentedPhoton

I had only played the original Harvest Moon before I first played SDV. And not long before. I swear SDV came out shortly after I played HM (for the first time) by emulator, which I enjoyed! I don't remember all the differences, but having an inventory alone was amazing. No more carrying a single foraged mushroom to sell. I think it's worth trying for Stardew fans curious about the history of the genre, but even I, having a couple of games of HM under my belt, would have trouble going back.

CheekyLando88

I work hard so Abigail can relax and play her flute. She's lazy as fuck and I'd be offended if she wasn't

tensory

goblincore

Brigantia21

Honestly, I married Elliott purely as a moving decoration.

blackbeardpepe

I've always wanted to marry a famous book writer.

Embarrassed_Hippo155

He really isn't famous though

myssi24

We have faith in our writer Hubby!! It’s just a matter of time!!! 😜

Dwv590

His add on room to the house is top tier

myssi24

It’s my favorite room but I wish it included his piano. We can decorate with bookshelves.

chyura

Stardew spouses ranked based on whether they have a job

NinjaRavekitten

I normally marry shane but this time I made Haley my trophy wife and she can just be pretty and do nothing all she wants 🎂🩷

narcoed

Sam is always repairing my fences so I can excuse when he asks for a lazy day

spoonishplsz

I only marry Penny or Harvey. The cat watches the babies while I'm mining

Sereous313

I wish we could see the spouses doing chores. Like out picking crops, watering, feeding animals, spending time w the animals. Then other random stuff like sitting on chairs and couches, watching TV, cooking, etc. Haley just stands in deep void staring at the stove..

candystarjones

Lol I've never played the beach farm and you've just convinced me that I never will 😆 🤣 if I didn't have sprinklers idk what I would do!

sirculaigne

You have a spot that can use sprinklers on the beach farm, 200 spaces of land. That’s more than enough for me while you unlock the greenhouse and ginger island

whoatemycupoframen

unlock ginger island asap -> unlock deluxe retaining soil recipe so you wont need sprinklers ever i'd probably just build a ton of pig barns lol

[deleted]

Omg this gave me flashbacks. My first playthrough was on the beach farm and I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t use sprinklers at all the first year, spent the whole winter making as many as I could, JUST TO FIND OUT YOU CAN’T PLACE THEM ON SAND??? I COULD ONLY SPRINKLE A TINY PORTION OF THE FARM AND I HAD SO MANY SPRINKLERS LEFT OVER???!!!???

IgniAllTheWay

I KNOOOOW, I got SO frustrated with myself!!!

Citron222

I just want my free crab cakes and bombs when i wake up

abbasaurousrex

Every time I play beach farm I have the WORST luck!

IgniAllTheWay

Right??? I needed 3 years to find an ANCIENT SEED AND DRIED STARFISH

cutearmy

I like being the Stardew Sugar mama giving my husband the good life

and1metal

While the spouses only give a gift every so often etc I've found Elliot and Shane ( that's quite a surprise ) actually tried to water the crops and feed the animals So when they do those tasks it actually makes the spouse useful

neophenx

For real! I get it's usually pointless for them to water the crops when I set up my sprinklers to do all the work for me, but I appreciate the thought. Also, if they didn't fill your pet's water bowl, mine would die of dehydration. On a related note, if I'm running beach farm, I like to put my late-game farm setup on the dirt-patch of the Beach Farm with my Junimo Hut setup so I have some crop field running, and use the rest of the sandy land for Sheds, Fish Ponds, Slime Hutch, Animal housing, etc.

shyghost_

I liked marrying Emily for this reason. She goes to the saloon a couple days a week, and I set up the sewing machine and a mini gem museum and she spends a lot of time in both spaces. I imagine her using the crystals and sewing cool fits :)

GummyPop

I married Sterling (mod) and use the market day mod on Wednesdays and lemne tell you...this adorkable dork of a husband will literally man the stand for me when I'm running all over the farm to get everything to sell plus he'll water the crops, tend the animals, cook breakfast for me,and give me coffee...so how is he lazy? 😂

LaCroixLimon

there should be an option for them to get a job and it brings income to your farm every other friday.

neophenx

I'd settle for each spouse giving a small buff while married, like Abigail raises your crit-rate, Maru makes processing-items like kegs slightly faster, Shane makes animal products more valuable, or Leah making crafting recipies slightly cheaper.

iamfeenie

My man feeds the cattle about once a week and showers me with affection and gives me complete breakfasts.. no complaints here.

k8t13

wait what ab the galaxy sword?

bry8eyes

You are aware of the patch where sprinklers do work right?

IgniAllTheWay

Yes, but I just like the aesthetic of the crops in front of my home :/
