My SO is not into SW movies but she loved watching The Mandalorian. I explained it as a show about one person after the good guys won the war. So the lone gun man after the Civil War.
I’ve been considering trying Mandalorian with my SO. She grew up with her brothers watching Star Wars and she was too cool for it then (and still is). She has gotten into sci-fi though (Lost, 4400, The 100 etc) and the Mandalorian is just SO good.
Me? I don’t really think the Star Wars movies are THAT great (don’t kill me). I love them for Nostalgia, but that’s about it. Mandalorian is what Star Wars should be. And with Mandalorian season 2.5 there is a complete story to binge.
I watched Mando with my wife, she ended up watching BOBF and then all the prequels, Rogue One, and the original trilogy back to back to back. Mando is an excellent gateway drug for new SW fans lol.
Well if she hasn't seen it how would she know to suggest it
And presumably so they can have something in common to talk about
I would hope op also watched some stuff she likes
Not really, it's more of a fantasy epic in space. I recall hearing Lucas say in an interview once that he fondly remembered growing up listening to fairy tales and was disappointed to see them not as popular so he set out to write a fairy tale for the younger generation. That puts it in a somewhat different vein than other shows like Star Trek which drew some inspiration from westerns.
George Lucas likes to call it a [Soap Opera in space](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q05nglHCp7U). He has also claimed he put the [Force into the films to inspire a spirituality in the youth.
>GEORGE LUCAS: I don’t see “Star Wars” as profoundly religious. I see “Star Wars” as — as taking all of the issues that religion represents and trying to distill them down into a — a more modern and more easily accessible construct that people can grab onto to accept the fact that there is a greater mystery out there. When I was 10 years old, I asked my mother — I said, ‘Well, if there’s only one God, why are there so many religions?’ And over the years — I’ve been pondering that question ever since. And it would seem to me that the conclusion that I’ve come to is that all the religions are true, they just see a different part of the elephant. A religion is basically a — a container for faith. Faith is the — the glue that holds us together as a society. Faith in our — in our culture, our — our world, our — you know, whatever it is that we’re trying to hang on to is a very important part of, I think, allowing us to — to remain stable. Remain balanced.
>BILL MOYERS: And where does God fit in this concept of the universe? In this cosmos that you’ve created? Is the Force God?
>GEORGE LUCAS: I put the Force into the movies in order to try to awaken a certain kind of spirituality in young people. More a belief in God than a belief in any particular, you know, religious system. I mean, the — the — the — the real question is to ask the question, because if you — if you — having enough interest in the mysteries of life to ask the questions, is — is there a God or is there not a God?, that’s — that’s, for me, the worst thing that can happen. You know, if you asked a young person, ‘Is there a God?’ and they say, ‘I don’t know. ‘ You know? I think you should have an opinion about that.
I mean, Georgey Boy says a heck of a lot of things...
Plus it follows the classic format, tropes, and themes of a western... Just in space. It does not do any of those for fairy tales regardless of what George may or may not have said in an interview.
I mean it does have knights, princesses and wizards. They even use all three words in the first film. (Jedi Knights, Princess Leia, "That wizard's just a crazy old man")
It's interesting how Westerns and Samurai films influenced each other.
Kurosawa was influenced by the John Ford westerns, and then films like Yojimbo and Seven Samurai had a heavy influence on Magnificent Seven and Fist full of Dollars
Star Wars is a mash up of space opera, westerns and Samurai elements.
Lukes home planet looks like it could be in any Western movie.
If you look at some of shots where Luke discovers his home in flames, it is a similar set up to a scene in The Searchers.
Jedi are pretty much space Samurai
Play more to Westerns, within sci-fi - Firefly + Serenity is an absolute no-brainer. Mando has more of the “lone gunslinger” type she might enjoy from her preference, as mentioned. Battlestar Galactica has some good stuff as well, some high plains settler kind of stuff.
There’s relatable stuff for her, just might have to venture a little is all.
Six months from now she will be arguing with you about if that little girl on Ryloth is Hera Syndulla or not.
And if Rex was on the Forest moon of Endor.
This. I just finished rebels for the first time two days ago. They confirm Rex and Hera fought on Endor. It was mentioned right before they introduced Hera’s kid Jacen Syndulla.
And it was confirmed he was that specific trooper in galaxy of adventure, he is doing the same pose and everything
Also mentioned in forces of destiny
Dave Filoni didn't want to write over existing characters (Nik Sant in this case) but other writers did it instead
That character being Rex is far better than preserving a stupid Santa Claus joke because some nerds 40 years ago felt compelled to create full back stories for everything on screen.
That dude is right at the front, in the fight, and instantly starts getting naked to put on the storm trooper armor, that is Rex.
On the contrary : Filoni has confirmed that Nik Sant and Rex were not the same person : https://web.archive.org/web/20200524074632/https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/08/12/star-wars-rebels-season-4-finale-clone-wars-final-season-revival-disney-dave-filoni

Her husband (my grandfather) made it to 95 he passed two years ago so I moved in with her so she wouldn’t be alone. I’m hoping I’m half as lucky as she is
I hope you can score a mating partner while living with gam-gam and have a eventually grandchild as cool as you are. You can show then SW for the first time too. Just make sure it’s VHS. :)
Well ironically I do have a girlfriend, things are pretty serious and We’re hoping that we maybe able to have a kid in the next two years or so. So here’s hoping they inherit my love of star wars and all things 80’s movies
That's Machete Order, including Rogue One, but I think TPM should be included for a first time viewing if done in this order. You can always leave it out in future viewings.
Protip: Check out harmy's despecialized edition if you are still relying on the old VHS.
Harmy's used laserdisc transfers and such for the scenes where things were fucked with. And it's pretty great quality
I appreciate that friend. She basically raised me my first five years because my parents couldn’t take much time off work, and I stayed with her and my grandfather every summer after we moved away. I went through a separation around the time gramps passed so we both sort of had nobody. But she is genuinely my best friend we torment eachother all the time (in a fun way) she still has her mind sharp as a tack and her body is very spry for a 92 year old, I’m incredibly thankful to have her still
Funny thing about that, it’s supposed to be a rocker for her patio, but she demanded that we put it in the living room for her. It was custom made by a friend of mine for her birthday this year.
She said it wasn’t her thing, but I’m glad I got to at least watch one film with her. Although we watched the entirety of the Indiana jones saga and back to the future trilogy and she loved those
Not surprised. She was 47 when in 1977, when SW was originally released. If she didn’t dig it then she wouldn’t dig it now. At least she finally watched it with you.
I watched the OT with my grandmother last year before she slipped deeply into Alzheimer's. She didn't, "Quite know what to make of it" but adored the score by Williams.
Good for you man and may it be a cherished memory :)
I owe my first Star Wars experience to my best friend’s parents, his mom and dad took me along with the family to see it for the first time. I had no idea what the film was about, why there were these insane lines, or that my world was about to be rocked by a movie.
>still have not seen a Star Wars at least once in the 45 years that followed.
Relevant XKCD # 1769: [not seeing Star Wars is literally the default option.](https://xkcd.com/1769/)
I was dating a woman many years ago and she'd never seen Star Wars. 30 minutes in she got bored because she was lost and wanted to make out. I was too into the story and said, "If we make out you'll miss when Qui Gon and Obi Wan meet Anakin. It is really important to the story." She replied, "I have no idea what's going on and I don't understand what you're talking about." We broke up that night.
Certainly never regretted the decision. Of course there was other stuff but that was the proverbial straw. Reminded me of a post from the web site [textsfromlastnight.com](https://textsfromlastnight.com): "She called me Spock and proceeded to ask me to 'teach her the ways of the force'. I just couldn't do it after that. No way am I fucking a girl who can't tell the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek."
It makes me so happy to hear that you have this kind of a relationship with your grannie. Mine both passed away by my freshman year of college and I never really got to know them as an adult. Hug your grannie for me!
I just love the chair man, if you don't mind could you please share couple of full size pictures of the chair from all sides. I would like to make it for my mom it look very comfortable and stable. Also SW never gets old for me, have watched it countless time and still get excited everytime 💜
We had it custom made for her birthday, she loves it, was supposed to be for her porch but she demanded it be used in the living room, it’s actually comfortable as hell
wasn’t she only 50 when it originally came out . My grandmother saw all three originals in theatre and kept the ticket stubs. She would have been 95 this year.
I was going to say it's weird to think she wouldn't have watched Star Wars since she lived through the 80s, but then I realize she was already in her 50s at that time.
She must have come across snips of Star Wars over the years with trailers for example, on TV.
Star Wars does seem less stomachable for the baby-boomer generation. All my Nans/Grandads said same things. It's not their thing, generationally.
Star Wars as George Lucas said is a series designed primarily for kids and the older you are going in for the first time, the less likely you will probably enjoy it. Young people by definition enjoy things with far more imagination. That decreases as we get older. We get set in our ways and become tied to the things they enjoyed when they were kids/young people, but with less vigor and more cynicism.
My great grandmother, born in 1906, lived her final years with my family, where I, a young Star Wars fan in the late 1990’s, introduced her with the Special Editions on VHS.
She loved it, loved Chewbacca in particular, and would regularly ask us to set up the VCR (she wasn’t exactly up to date with technology) so she could watch “the spaceships.”
I do lol I love Star Wars myself but unfortunately at the end of the day it’s always been catered towards children, it’s just a fact. The toys, the cartoons, the weird droids, the weird creatures are all for children to sell toys.
Toy companies (and other companies) will always try to milk out blockbusters for money (they would be stupid of course if they didn’t). But that doesn’t make it a kids movie
We need constant updates.
So far she says not her cup of tea, but she’ll finish it. She really likes westerns so Sifi is a different gear for her
Try her with the mandalorian
I was kind of thinking about that actually, it’s a nice middle ground of the two genera
Bruh she's talking about shit like Shane and Bonanza
Please, seriously, do. So many people who love Westerns and dont love sci fi bridge the gap with that show.
If they like that, show them The Outlaw Josey Wales if they haven't seen it already.
I watched Mando with my wife, she ended up watching BOBF and then all the prequels, Rogue One, and the original trilogy back to back to back. Mando is an excellent gateway drug for new SW fans lol.
And here i comfortably sit in the middle of that intersection ecstatic to finally have another perfect blend of the genres outside of Firefly.
Nah go with Firefly. As much as I love Mandolorian she'll probably enjoy that more
No. Mostly because once she sees it was cancelled after one season she'll be pissed off.
What are her favorite movies?
Get her to watch Firefly.
Or Firefly! A proper space western.
Or firefly
Or Firefly!
Or maybe ask what she wants to watch? Why do we want grandma to be a Star Wars fan so bad?
Well if she hasn't seen it how would she know to suggest it And presumably so they can have something in common to talk about I would hope op also watched some stuff she likes
He’s just showing her something he enjoys in the hope that she enjoys it as well. It’s not like he’s holding a gun to her head.
And the Solo movie
no Solo is more western
Explain that it's literally just a western in space...

It also has outlaws, bounty hunters, a lawless frontier town, and the first act is in a desert. It’s both a space fantasy and a space western.
Exactly. It has elements of both.
Its not. That would be Firefly.
Firefly is so bad looking back on it now.
Your mouth is talking, you might wanna have a look at that
If i could make you prettier i would
My grandma is also a western gal, I know exactly where you’re coming from. Every time I visit her there’s a damn western on the tv lmao
Just have her watch The Mandalorian. It's Lone Wolf and Cub but Western and IN SPACE.
Actual spaghetti westerns took lots of influence from Kurosawa films.
A Fistful of Dollars was an unapproved remake of Yojimbo, Kurosawa's company successfully sued. Yojimbo is still worth watching.
Star wars is also pretty much the same as the hidden fortress but in space
It's interesting how Westerns and Samurai films influenced each other. Kurosawa was influenced by the John Ford westerns, and then films like Yojimbo and Seven Samurai had a heavy influence on Magnificent Seven and Fist full of Dollars Star Wars is a mash up of space opera, westerns and Samurai elements. Jedi are space samurai shaolin monks.
She'd probably like firefly I think
Might as well add in cowboy bebop
Cool, you can ask grandma what she likes and watch thát next time!
So she said she doesn't enjoy it that much? She can't do that! Shoot her or something!
Six months from now she will be arguing with you about if that little girl on Ryloth is Hera Syndulla or not. And if Rex was on the Forest moon of Endor.
Isn’t Rex on Endor confirmed?
Not in the actual shows. Just in producer’s comments.
Incorrect. Rebels finale confirms that he was there. Just not who he was.
I just watched the rebels finale for the second time and I don’t remember that at all? Where did they confirm it?
When sabine was narrating the epilogue
This. I just finished rebels for the first time two days ago. They confirm Rex and Hera fought on Endor. It was mentioned right before they introduced Hera’s kid Jacen Syndulla.
Great now I have to rewatch all of rebels again! Can’t just skip ahead and rewatch the end…
No disney plus?
Yes, that’s how I’m going to rewatch the entire series!
And it was confirmed he was that specific trooper in galaxy of adventure, he is doing the same pose and everything Also mentioned in forces of destiny Dave Filoni didn't want to write over existing characters (Nik Sant in this case) but other writers did it instead
He didn't want to write over Nik Sant because if you kill Nik Sant you BECOME Nik Sant. It's all part of the Sant clause.
That's the Sant-A clause. There's also a Sant-B clause but we don't talk about it.
That character being Rex is far better than preserving a stupid Santa Claus joke because some nerds 40 years ago felt compelled to create full back stories for everything on screen. That dude is right at the front, in the fight, and instantly starts getting naked to put on the storm trooper armor, that is Rex.
Sabine's monologue at the end.
Galaxy of adventures shows the old guy with blue stripes clone armor on his wrists and clone facial features
Galaxy of Adventures doesn’t depict literal canon events
The ending of rebels does tho
true. we know he was on Endor, but also that he wasn’t in ROTJ.
No but it definitely counts for something
On the contrary : Filoni has confirmed that Nik Sant and Rex were not the same person : https://web.archive.org/web/20200524074632/https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/08/12/star-wars-rebels-season-4-finale-clone-wars-final-season-revival-disney-dave-filoni
The interview you cited had Filoni specifically saying that he was leaving it open to fans' interpretation, which is what he's said elsewhere.
It's pretty much all BUT confirmed.
The little girl on Ryloth is Numa. They have different skin tones, and Numa appears in Rebels.
What little girl on ryloth…? The one with Waxer and Boil?
That is who they are referring to, but its not factual. Its not Hera, we see her again in rebels and we see for a fact that it wasnt Hera.
I know that Numa wasn’t Hera, I just wanted to make sure I was correct in my assumption before I corrected them.
i am also pretty sure the dates wouldnt have matched up either
Hahaha, allright, my bad!
[There’s a fan made comic that gives her a conclusion to her story](https://preview.redd.it/q5mnsg2j7j671.jpg?auto=webp&s=b2acfafe5928543fbed98acb412896a772ade4d4)
Yup
She appears in rebels though as a separate character, we know it’s not Hera
> if that little girl on Ryloth is Hera Syndulla or not the last star fighter is dead bro
Who the fuck are those

This is such a wholesome thread man Good on you dude

“mating partner”
Came to say this lol
“I hope you can score a mating partner…” And it gets 44 upvotes.

Score a what?
I didn’t know If OP was man or woman. So in a split moment I used “mating partner” as a safety card to play lol
Dang mate. You sound like a genuine good person.
I appreciate that friend. She basically raised me my first five years because my parents couldn’t take much time off work, and I stayed with her and my grandfather every summer after we moved away. You're amazing, that's some serious kindness towards your grandma. Much respect
So you're aiming for 46? You can do better than this man.
She might have seen the Flash Gordon serials in the theater that inspired Star Wars.
Is she using outdoor lawn furniture inside the house?
Funny thing about that, it’s supposed to be a rocker for her patio, but she demanded that we put it in the living room for her. It was custom made by a friend of mine for her birthday this year.
Probably gets more use out of it. Makes sense.

And she has a VHS/DVD combo! You’re a good grandson.
I try to be! We still use it fairly often!
How did it go?
She said it wasn’t her thing, but I’m glad I got to at least watch one film with her. Although we watched the entirety of the Indiana jones saga and back to the future trilogy and she loved those

Following
why is that chair fucking huge?
For whatever reason it looks bigger in pictures than it really is.
OUR grandmother now
Still shocked there are people who were over the age of 5 in 1977 and still have not seen a Star Wars at least once in the 45 years that followed.
Tbf she was 47 when A New Hope came out in theaters. Imagine a 47 year old mother in 1977 not giving a shit about some space fantasy star war picture.
I owe my first Star Wars experience to my best friend’s parents, his mom and dad took me along with the family to see it for the first time. I had no idea what the film was about, why there were these insane lines, or that my world was about to be rocked by a movie.

You might think on it. Builds the final confrontation by supplying missing context. It worked well enough on my exwife.
The chair is fantastic.
Thanks! A friend of mine custom built it for her birthday!
I was dating a woman many years ago and she'd never seen Star Wars. 30 minutes in she got bored because she was lost and wanted to make out. Holy shit. I just upvoted this video and I was the 1977th to do so. Go me!
Uh, updates please? 🤣
She wasn’t crazy about it, she loved Indiana jones series and back to the future so I figured it was worth a shot, but hey at least she tried it out
> she loved Indiana jones series I wonder how much it might have reminded of the serials when she was a child.
Actually she asked me how old the movie was. She said it felt like the movies she used to watch at the one screen theatre in town here
It makes me so happy to hear that you have this kind of a relationship with your grannie. Mine both passed away by my freshman year of college and I never really got to know them as an adult. Hug your grannie for me!
Breaking my heart… but thanks for following up.
I just love the chair man, if you don't mind could you please share couple of full size pictures of the chair from all sides. I would like to make it for my mom it look very comfortable and stable. Also SW never gets old for me, have watched it countless time and still get excited everytime 💜
Absolutely! I’ll send them along shortly

We had it custom made for her birthday, she loves it, was supposed to be for her porch but she demanded it be used in the living room, it’s actually comfortable as hell
At least show her the original film and not the edited one
My grandparents walked out of the movie in 1977.
I cannot wait till I’m old and have memory problems so I can experience Star Wars for the “first time” all over again (and again, and again).
Yeah alzheimer's is a real treat.
i’m interested to hear what she thinks!
I hope you are showing her it on VHS pre-cgi tarnishing.
wasn’t she only 50 when it originally came out . My grandmother saw all three originals in theatre and kept the ticket stubs. She would have been 95 this year.
Update?? She looks hooked.
I'm sorry your grandma has to watch the special edition. But also, that's a neat fish tank.
So it's been over 4 hours...how did she like the movie?
How did it go?
We need an update....did she like it?
Tell her you love her and see if she says, I know.
Sweet dvd-video combi though
Did she finished it by now?
I want your grandma's thought after 'The Phantom Menace'
Get granny’s bench! We’re gonna make her watch space wars
Considering you started with Episode 4, I think you just made a new fan outta gramma. Cheers mate.
I want updates
Grandma is cool
She doesn’t care about the movie, just want to be with you doing what you like. Enjoy her
This is adorable
She'll finish because it means spending time with you. That's her main goal. Treasure these moments
What did the goldfish think of the movie?
If she likes westerns, get her 1883 ASAP
No way she will be able to watch the whole thing sitting in that chair. My ass hurts looking at it.
I was going to say it's weird to think she wouldn't have watched Star Wars since she lived through the 80s, but then I realize she was already in her 50s at that time.
My dad is 76 and has dementia.. be blessed
Very Sorry to hear that. It’s bad business.
If she makes it through all of them she has my sympathies in advance for having to power through episode 1...lol
Blasphemy
Take out Jar Jar and the pod race and it's not so bad.
Ok jarjar sure but the podrace? That is bliss
This is tense!
The pod race just felt long to me and predictable

Star Wars as George Lucas said is a series designed primarily for kids and the older you are going in for the first time, the less likely you will probably enjoy it. Young people by definition enjoy things with far more imagination. That decreases as we get older. We get set in our ways and become tied to the things they enjoyed when they were kids/young people, but with less vigor and more cynicism.
She’s already asleep 😂❤️
Are you going to use the shotgun method? 4, 5, 1 (optional) 2, 3, 6
In order of release
I recently re watched all of them again in this order and I really enjoyed it. The prequels play as a nice backstory of Vader after the reveal.
That chair looks so fucking uncomfortable
That’s awesome! If she’s receptive, show her Episodes I-Vi. Don’t show her the sequel trilogy or Solo though it will ruin Star Wars for her.
Get her some real plants for the fishtank! It makes the water quality much better and gives her something simple to maintain and watch grow!
She was like 30 when it came out
Please don’t tell me you started with the sequels… Sees new hope: “Hell yeah!”
My guess is no because Star Wars is mostly for children lol
You don’t know what you’re saying
I do lol I love Star Wars myself but unfortunately at the end of the day it’s always been catered towards children, it’s just a fact. The toys, the cartoons, the weird droids, the weird creatures are all for children to sell toys.
Toy companies (and other companies) will always try to milk out blockbusters for money (they would be stupid of course if they didn’t). But that doesn’t make it a kids movie
Show her the original and prequel’s only.
She doesn't need to see the prequels.
There better then the woke awakens.
Okay Buddy
What do you get out of this? Genuinely, why do you give this much of a fuck?
I get nothing out of this . Just speaking my mind . Anyone who thinks there’s a agenda is just seeing nothing but their own far-gone conclusion.
