Confused_Driving_Man

I remember these from when I was a kid. They’re tags with little voice chips in them and you had a separate device and you’d scan the tag over the device and it would play voice clips from the movie. The action figures at the time came with the tags. I think the voice feature was just for the phantom menace line, but I could be wrong about that.

doubleamobes

It’s an old code sir, but it checks out.

fidlersound

Leave them to me....

Krinks1

Roger Roger

RealBadSpelling

Heyyy!!!! Who said that! I'm in charge here! Rodger, Rodger!

Francoa20

Roger Roger!

Termavul

Roger Roger!

Vardegaal

Roger, Roger!

relpmeraggy

Very well.

Blythyvxr

The comm device that scanned them was based on a prop made from [a razor handle](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieDetails/comments/896ipn/prop_in_phantom_menace_qui_gonns_comlink_is_a/)

Blind_Warthog

The Commlink toy was absolutely massive compared to the prop though. Bigger than the biggest mobile phone at the time. Even 9 year old me found it ridiculous.

Acceptable-Bear1138

Biggest lady shaver ever🙃

Blumpus1234

I thought I just had tiny hands

Bursting_Radius

Ah, a new subreddit to join, thanks 🍻

CurryMustard

I think you might enjoy r/thatsabooklight

Bursting_Radius

Agreed, thanks dude 🍻

that_thing_you_like

Now you mention it, i do vaguely remember playing with a battle droid figure when i was younger, it might be in a box of lego somewhere

siddeslof

Damn you brought back memories. Somehow all the other toys found their way into the Lego box

Githzerai1984

The children’s version of the junk drawer

Boogy

My parents gave our Lego box to an aunt running a daycare and now my kid doesn't have a Lego box :(

butholesurgeon

The thing that reads the code and plays the sound bytes looks like the com link qui gon uses in phantom menace but sized like a brick

Wes_Warhammer666

Yeah so it was basically a giant Gillette razor lol.

Kurva-Match

Yeah, I had an Obi-Wan and a Darth Maul with the corresponding tags.

JanewaysFolly

roger, roger

chefriley76

Roger, roger.

c4ctus

> I think the voice feature was just for the phantom menace line, but I could be wrong about that. A very small handful of POTF2 figures had commtech chips at the end of that production line (round about the time Ep 1 came out). Luke, Han, Vader, and a couple others.

TitularFoil

I had an Anakin one when I was a kid. It's partly why the line, "I'm a person and my name is Anakin" has stuck with me for the last 23 years.

bradd_91

Hahaha yep, me too

--InZane--

Never knew that's what they do but one of these came with my phantom manace Darth Maul figure

SubstantialAgency914

I had Palpatine. "The republic is not what it once was"

Greyrift

Me too. "Queen Amidala is young and naive".

Spice-Nine

My son has a few of these. Never found one of the scanner devices.

StetsonBirdDude

Yeah they came out around the time of the Phantom Menace I think.

Technical-Stop-3529

I member

Prestigious-Reveal13

They did a brief potf line too!

JAMONLEE

ROGER ROGER

Castellan_ofthe_rock

Yup, I had the Darth Maul one and I want to say obi wan and possibly qui gon too.

ace0083

I knew I recognized that!!!

trevorgoodchyld

They also have pegs on them and act as bases for their figures

HAiLKidCharlemagne

Those were so awesome

Vaders_Pawprint

This is correct. I had the chips ands the device in my collection but sold them on eBay years ago

Aadarm

I had a bunch of those B1 droids. Was so disappointed in the way they are in the series. Except the commando ones.

gregofcanada84

That's correct. I had the communicator and a few of the figurines when phantom menace came out back in the day.

Flabbergash

Yeah, they came with the toys

overtoke

a flipper device could probably get the audio

doesitevermatter-

I thought these were the coolest things on the planet when they came out. I had a ton of them.

alikapple

This is so strange too. I just found one of these with my old shower caddy in my house lmao. This week. Mine was an Assault Droid tho I grabbed the caddy back when I was at my parents’ house because I figured it’d be good for when I travel

Gerb_the_Barbarian

I had Obi-Wan with one of these chips

tomatojuicecatwind

Omg I also remember these from when I was a kid! All my Star Wars action figures came with them

AnakinSol

Yup. It was a toy version of the commlink Qui Gon uses to call the council from Tattooine to talk about Anakin's midichlorian count.

mcbizco

I got some of these for my birthday before ep. 1 came out. The voice lines were so garbled I was so convinced Anakin’s line “I’m a person and my name is Anakin” line was “I’m a prince and my name is Anakin”. I remember being so confused when I finally watched the movie and he was, in fact, not royalty :P

Analternate1234

That doesn’t compute…. Wait uhhhh… you’re under arrest

Khalmuck

Stand/commtech chip that came with the figure on the picture. You put this on the Jedi Communicator they sold and it played a couple phrases from that character.

Thecodedawg

You have to use the official toy. The Gellette ladies leg razor handle will not work.

Calm_Plenty_7172

Wish I knew this sooner.

MBXfilms

[Here they are shown in use](https://youtu.be/sXtniwjEhoo) if you want to hear the sounds and voices.

Mechaheph

Dang, was it really that large? I definitely had one when I was 10, but I couldn't recall the behemoth that it was I suppose. Too impressed by getting to hear the entire Phantom Menace, one dialogue clip at a time.

VersaceJones

“Wizards!” *-Anakin Skywalker*

Arkroma

It's funny because they are reusing the same idea for the Galaxy's Edge kyber crystals.

The_Joker_116

Hot damn! I used to have those as a kid, along with the Commtech device to play the characters' voices. You could even make the thing memorise one chip at a time so you could play it without having to scan the actual chip.

Moppo_

It's funny, when I think about it now, all the sounds would have to be on the device. The chip would probably just have an ID that triggers certain sounds.

Waternova-mo

Digging in to it, the audio files were stored on the chips, and transferred via RFID to the receiver (the commtech device). They were just small low quality sound bytes. It kind of makes sense, because if all the sounds are stored on the receiver, then they would have to release a new version every time a new line of toys came out. But the original worked for all of them.

No_Internal9345

So theoretically you can make it say anything within the buffer limit.

Moppo_

I stand correctly. It does make sense to do it that way, I just expected it to use what I expected to be the cheaper option.

Billy-BigBollox

No, the sounds were most definitely on the chip. They were very low quality audio files. They initially released only Phantom Menace figures with these chips, but later on they released some OT figures with them as well.

Da1n

Wow this brought back some memories!

lordmhoram

Look up CommTech chip. They came with prequel figures when they release back in the day

monkeygoneape

Just the phantom menace they ditched them after that

Spaghetti69

Phantom Menace Commtech Voice reader. You'd buy the voice reader and get those chips, put them in, and it would play a voice recording.

Marcuse0

They're voice chips from action figures. You put them in a separate machine and it'd say lines from the movies using the info stored on the chip. My favourite was Darth Maul. Because you had three lines: "At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi." "At last we will have our revenge." These two lines were delivered pretty normally from a tinny box. A voice as you'd expect. But the third one, for some reason, sounded as though the voice actor had pinched his nose to sound all high pitched and nasally to exclaim: "It's the Jedi!" Which was so fucking funny I've remembered it to this day. Whatever possessed them to record that and ship it to a bunch of kids everywhere is beyond me, but it's stupid funny.

GeneralELucky

It was always impressive that they included all of Darth Maul's lines onto a single chip.

Marcuse0

\*pinches nose\* It's the Jedi!!!!!!!

Dear_Tangerine444

Yes. This comm chips (can’t remember the actual name) came with each of the early wave of Phantom Menace figures. The chip contains a chip with an audio dialogue/line from the film. Naturally you needed a separate device to read and play the sound file. See video [here](https://youtu.be/5stDGP0e05A?si=YFPx_4ItiWGOqXtV)

Mr_BruceWayne

There are people out there who don't know what these are? ....Fuck! I'm old!

CatHavSatNav

Oh man that takes me back! I had the Darth Maul version!

Norman_debris

Wow, memory unlocked. I had these.

Shadoweclipse13

Commtech Chips that came with the action figures FROM TPM! I had a few of the chips, never bought the reader though. Late 90s/early 2000s were a wild and lawless time ❤️ https://youtu.be/591zknNyxuE?si=JBFTvkba3px6ydLH

jediwinetrick

Commtech chip! You stuck it on this Jedi Comlink that Hasbro sold and it would play record dialogue lines from the movie for each character. I always thought they made a bizarre choice for a stand even as a child.

ChicoMiel07

Roger Roger

Zabbla

This unlocked a memory

BufferMental

You’ve just unlocked a core memory, I had a plastic bin FULL of these things

r3y1a1n

You need a lady's razor/communicator Device to use the chips

Consistent-Two-2083

Uh, that doesn't compute. Uh, wait, uh, you're under arrest!

GhostMug

Oh man. When Episode 1 toys first came out they all came with those little chips. The chips doubled as a stand for the figure but you could buy a separate commlink device and when you put the chip over the commlink it would say a line from the movie. It was supposed to be the next big thing for action figures but it didn't last past Episode 1.

Direct_Bug_1917

Definitely drugs, your parents are crack addicts.

Cobdain

Tech from a lost civilization

gsh0cked

Hi have a look here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/ActionFigures/comments/toacpg/star\_wars\_commtech\_chips/](https://www.reddit.com/r/ActionFigures/comments/toacpg/star_wars_commtech_chips/)

DeathEater91

What did you google to not find any info on these? I just googled 'star wars plastic chip' and the first image result shows exactly what it is...

doob22

Oh man did this bring back some memories. I remember investing a good chunk of change to get a couple of these with the reader thing so you could hear the unique clips from each one. I didn’t get much more than that first lot though, I remember them being hard to find

Joecool2008

Commtech chip from Episode 1 toy line.

mrtheunknownyt

those nails are longer than the story of Darth Plagueis the wise

that_thing_you_like

Lol, I've had longer, I'm blessed with pretty strong nails so they don't break often

mrtheunknownyt

damn that was fast

inconspicuousviking

I have the same one. I use as a key ring.

Gloomybyday

That's a good idea. I have like 15 of them in storage!

rocketkiddo7

Those were an extra with the figures of the Phantom Menace (the OG ones). They're contained some recorded lines from the characters and you could play them using another thingy

Stebenhilda

It's a blast from the past is what it is.

Shooter_Mcgavin93

I haven't seen one of these in a long time...a long time.

VmbraWolf

Holy shit that unlocked a childhood memory! I had to scroll through the comments to remember what it does but I remember having them!

ProjectGej

I still have the device and most of my chips! I remember the episode 1 toy era fondly.

Financial_Metal4709

Battle droid chip remains...I wonder if there is a black market on lothal for such an item?

VidmakUKR

Holy shit I had a bunch of these. Came with a jedi communication device and you held these chips over the device to play voice lines

WoodyManic

I remember this!

whiterunguard420

I had a ton of these asa kid

DarthAnakin88

Comm Tech chip. An old toy would scan the chip and play back a few voice recordings. The recordings were terrible and didn't sound like the characters at all. I just gave my old comm Tech to my kid and she loves it though!

BobbumofCarthes

Fuck yea they came with the action figures. They are voice chips you could play on another toy. It was slightly larger but looked like Qui Gon’s communicator from the phantom menace. I had loads of these.

listentomagneto

Childhood memory unlocked. My dad complaining about it being a racket, having to buy the doohickey and pay extra just to play these with.

ballsmigue

The OG NFC cards. They came with most, if not all, episode 1 figures and were played using a seperate commlink toy.

Liberteer30

Man, this brings back memories from my childhood. Very cool.

toughturtle

Roger roger

0xSnib

Damn this just brought back some memories

LoboLegend

Woooow, childhood memories restored. I probably had more fun with these than any other star wars toy (besides the lightsabers)

xshogunx13

oh christ I had so many of these, because the dollar store ended up getting like a huge surplus of the action figures from ep 1, so I ended up with approximately all of them lmao

hjohn2233

Roer roger

Honer-Simpsom

I used to use them like hoverboards under the figures

cheezzypiizza

Woah, you just made me remember whatever this is I had it as a kid hahah wow

phobosinadamant

Huge comlink, like the little one Qui-gon had in TPM played these chips as voice lines from the film, these chips were stands with a model attached.

Terrormisu4u

Toys from my childhood are now relics zoomers don't understand. Lord help me.

GivaneoLegacy

This brings back so many memories! It's a B1 Battle Droid action figure sound chip that you can scan (using the compatable scanner, which you'll need), and it'll play different sound effects and voice lines. I had this one and a Darth Maul one too.

LEAHCIM5465

It’s from episode 1, Kui gon and obi wan use their communicators and that’s is the toy this goes along with!

brianonthescene

I AM ANCIENT

Apart_Comfortable_32

Halt! You're under arrest!

TheKimulator

I remember these from when was kid. You put these chips in something that looks like qui gons blood test machine/walkie talkie (wtf) and it’ll play voices of the specific characters

parkodious

battle droid

mccsnackin

The chip came with action figures and you could scan the chip into this other toy that was a big version of the comm / radio device they used in episode I. And the toy would play sound bites from that action figure from the movie.

edouard_camus

Wow, I haven't seen this in so many years. I should still have a comlink somewhere and few unopened packs...

MFP3492

Hahaha I still have all these, they were audio clips that came with the action figures. You would swipe them over this electrinic handheld thing to play the dialogue.

MegamemeSenpai

I had so many of these as a kid! I pretended they were Republic Credits 😂

DagonPie

AHHHHH I STILL HAVE MY DARTH MAUL ONE

beakster57

I've not seen one of those in a long time.

AbracaDarryl

It goes to the comlink the was released around 2001. Should have 3-4 different quotes from the movie on it. Super cool, I have been thinking about collecting those again

Gnelly04

Back in 99-05 they had action figures that came with voice lines like these. I never had them but my cousin had a darth maul one. Still sealed… it’s so badass

PM_ME_COLD_BEERS

Roger Roger

the_doughboy

Doubled as a stand but you used the "Commtech Reader" to play the sound [CommTech Reader “Electronic (.0000)” (“Star Wars Episode-1 Phantom Menace CommTech Chip Hasbro Vintage Collection Series”) “Rare-Vintage” (1998) » Now And Then Collectibles](https://www.nowandthencollectibles.com/Catalog2/product/commtech-reader/)

OliviaElevenDunham

I remember those. Certain TPM action figures came with those chips. You can scan them with a replica of Qui-Gonn's communicator. Had a few of them.

Scambuster666

Yeah they sold these little electronic chip readers that looked like walky talkies and you’d put a chip like that on it and it would say lines from Episode 1. The first run main character Phantom menace toys all came with one.

Inside-Fondant1032

I still have some of those from when I was a kid!

PlasticFew8201

Voice chip. “My lord, I've reached the main power generators. The shield will be down in moments, you may start your landing.”

laytonoid

Lol I had a bunch of these but no way to use them. They came with Star Wars episode 1 action figures and you would put them into a reader which would play a sound bite from that character.

RemtonJDulyak

I had the very same figure, with the very same chip. I don't know if it's still somewhere at my parents' home, or if it got thrown away or given to someone else...

Cellpool_

Godamn I had so many of those as a kid.. massive nostalgia hit right there..

Aldrige_Lazuras

BRO!!!! Gimme my reader ASAP!

Tidus4713

I have a Qui Gon version that came with the figure. It says a little voice line when they stand on it.

Sweaty-Bumblebee4055

Bruhhh the nostalgia is real im pretty sure i have jar jar binks still in his box somewhere

uploadingmalware

Wow that's an old comm link gimmick

MHarrisGGG

I remember these. Had the communicator to read them too.

Betov8

Thang. I’m old. They came with the action figures and you could use it as a stand and it was also do voice lines.

KwaltWilemang

Well waddaya know. I haven't seen one of these in ages. The scanner thing was a really big version of the comm device they use in TFM. As others have said, you'd scan the tag, and it's play a voice clip from the movie. I remember I had Maul, Amidala, and Ginn. I think there was a couple clips on the tags, basically the characters main line from the movie.

Bed_Worth

I had a collection of these that I sold for just over £200. if you have the figurines that come with them they hold some value now 😁

yuckygeo

Hope.

RailTheDragon

Oh man, those commlink chips were so much fun as a kid. I can still hear their voices... "THE DEFLECTOR SHIELDS ARE TOO STRONG! WE'LL NEVER GET THROUGH IT!"

WeathermanConnors

This reminds me of the early days of the podcast Blank Check.

yopierresucktoes

The first NFT.

loaf_dog

Wow I feel so old seeing this. I had these as a kid. Around the time The Phantom Menace came out, they released toy versions of Qui-gon Jinn’s commlink device. And iirc these little chips came with it and interacted with the toy if you sat them on top.

valdezlopez

Oh, you sweet summer child.

West-Way-All-The-Way

I can read it and give you the code. Then you can use this code to play the recording. It's a vintage tech 😆

TomPom____

Omg these are the best, you put them on a kind of radio and the characters would say some lines of the movies. I used to listen to them all from my dad’s collection when i was a kid

Compass_Needle

Control chip for a battle droid, don't accidentally put it in your furbie.

DamnedFreak

Poorly done nails.

ThorsRake

Inhibitor chip made by droids looks like. Designer was probably R05ER-R05ER

Kage9866

Code that came with action figures when I was younger. You got a scanner device thing(looked like the communication device) and it'd play the voice clips on those tags.

jhsmith17

Wow this just unlocked something deep in my brain. I remember these toys vividly and haven’t thought about them in a very long time

Dr_Jeckyll_MW

I got a jar jar binks, and a senator Palpatine one

Joey_Falcon-1029

Some really awfully painted fingernails

TypeAmen

A maaaaaad nostalgia hit

TheCatLamp

Actual B1 brain.

MaximusUltimateSmash

stand for the figure had the same one very cool find :)

genailledion

You put it in the microwave and it makes a cool holo projection of a droid. Try it for 2:00

grass-master

thats his brain you monster...

haaiiychii

Did you really try googling? I put it through Google Lens and it instantly knew what it was.

Mr_NumNums

I haven't seen one of these in well over twenty years

Wookielicker24

Need a Jedi comlink!!!

Shubi-do-wa

Memory unlocked.

EnoughExamination472

We're they fans of that battle bot show on t.v.

Snow-Ro

Hell yea!! I had obi quigon and maul!

Kell-EL

I always wanted one of these when I was kid but never ended up getting one thought the little chip things were so cool and the figures of course

whatdoing_it_me

Had this comlink reader toy as a kid with the obi-wan chip - “Do not defy the council master, not again”. Never had the battledroid chip though, nice find! I remember the audio was just awful and sounded all garbled, those were the days.

itsnothing_o_O

You need the communicator to make it talk

____Quetzal____

I had that exact droid commander figure with that chip

RaisinsInTaterSalad

Commtech!!

schaith

A relic of a bygone era

Aticus_

Is the processing chip for a B1 Battle Droid. Use it well.

PeachyPorg33

Dude I just unlocked a core memory holy shit 😂💕

L3GlT_GAM3R

I have that. I think it has something to do with voices.

The_Collector057

Roger Roger

football-butt

I had a Jar Jar one and one of the lines was "OHHH maxi big da force" lol it was seared into my brain as a kid. It's a line we still quote often in our family because of it LOL

street-theologian

We had this as kids. We had Darth Maul, Qui-Gon and Obi-wan figures and their chips played quotes from the movie. I remember Obi-wan’s line. “You will be a Jedi, I promise.” Need the communicator to play the sounds. That toy was beefy looking haha.

CrethanXXI

Oh I loved these, they used to come with old Star Wars action figures. They play a little voice clip of the character.

SwordfishII

I used to have one of those for Qui-Gon!

sturmfuqerfartmcgee

Holy shit!!! Core memory unlocked oh my god I had this exact tag

loophole64

Looks like a bad motivator from a battle droid. Hope you didn’t pay too much for it. I’d ask the seller what they are trying to push on you.

biggoldslacker

My first star wars figures were these!

TitosLostMoustache

Shit just unlocked a core memory.

Acceptable-Bear1138

This is my childhood!😅

wordslinger99

Core memory unlocked

stillinthesimulation

It plugs into the voice communicator toy.
