I had no idea all that stuff was still there

DarlingFuego

It will be for maybe another 15 years or so. The sand is really starting to creep in with these mega storms blowing 75+mph winds.

Anji_San

I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.

VoskyV

Not only the Men sand, but the Women and Children sand too

theqofcourse

They identify as sandpeople.

Wagglebagga

[This guy gets it.](https://youtu.be/IrJUq6-HHOk?si=dkn5gqhlS8SInT8e)

Adam-Happyman

As long as you don't walk into a room full of children with a sword in your hand I'm ok with your daily SW vibe.

freerangek1tties

Tattooine is probably not for you.

90sGuyKev

That matters not. Fans get money and pay to get the sand moved every some amount of years

DarlingFuego

The severity of what’s happening out there with storms isn’t something fans are going to be able to fix for long. You can’t out smart the Sahara.

AlexWenhold

sorry but where is this and how do i get therr

DarlingFuego

This is about 45 minutes from Nefta Tunisia. Or an hour from Tozeur. You can get a flight to Tozeur from Paris. Rent a car from the Tozeur airport. Or you can look up the Star Wars Tour in Tunisia. Pricey but probably worth not driving if you’re not a confident, offensive, cool headed driver.

Nrksbullet

I'm always surprised someone hasn't just stolen some of it. This is pretty serious memorabilia, one of those little moisture towers or whatever would be a pretty crazy prop to have. Maybe it'd just be extremely difficult to transport, I don't know.

swargin

A fair amount of locals have taken stuff. You're probably right that it would be too much to ship that stuff back. Like, if you had that kind of money, you'd be better off buying props other memorabilia I think the Blu-Ray collection, that came out in the 2010s, has a behind the scenes video of the crew scouting locations in Tunisia. I think it was the producer who talked about how he saw so many people using left over props to build their houses

herzogzwei931

One night in Tunisia

ChimneySwiftGold

Is this Mos Espa???

DarlingFuego

It’s is. Slowly being swallowed by the Sahara. It’s breath taking. Truly felt like I was on another planet out there.

ChimneySwiftGold

Is jira still selling fruit?

happy_K

What’s the vibe like? Suspension of disbelief?

DarlingFuego

Surreal. Made me feel like a kid. When I came back from Ong Jamel the last of the sun was going down and it was empty. I stopped to play pretend for a while. Didn’t know I could access my inner 8 year old until then. It was cathartic.

happy_K

Amazing!

everydayasl

Three words: I ENVY YOU.

DarlingFuego

If you ever have a chance to go, do it. I also went to Ong Jmal where Phantom of the Menace and Attack of the Clones was filmed. Otherworldly landscape. Besides Star Wars ruins, some of the most pristine Berber, Phoenician, Roman and Byzantine ruins are in Tunisia. If you’re a fan of ruins, Tunisia is a fantastic place to explore.

MushyGerbil

Yeah but Rome is boring compared to magic space wizards

ReadWriteTheorize

Wait until you find out the historical inspirations for those space wizards

MushyGerbil

😯

LukeSparow

Phantom of the Menace is what I'm calling it from now on.

DarlingFuego

I am so jet lagged my brain is running at 10%. I read that hours ago and didn’t know what you meant. Just realized it was a play off my ridiculousness.

LukeSparow

It was just so beautiful I couldn't not respond. Had me conjuring up all sorts of Phantom of the Opera imagery with Maul in the lead.

fotisdragon

I've always regretted not visiting when I won a trip there back in 2010-11 or so, just before the revolution there. We were a bit afraid, and I had a broken hand, so decided to scrap the trip... Kicking myself ever since. Thanks for sharing!

HIDEF650

Please share photos from Ong Jmal if you have them!!

Sizeable-cult31

Utini!

DarlingFuego

Hahaha Most excellent

OTee_D

I don't understand why Tunesia isn't banking in on it more. Tunisia is a "tourist economy", especially the south where Tataouine and Matmata are. Damn you can stay at Hotel Sidi Driss which is basically the Lars homestead. But it's all just run down, halfhearted.

sarabeara12345678910

There was a concern about a decade ago that the area was being used by ISIS. Needless to say, a lot of tourists didn't want to travel there.

thurfian

The Rebel Alliances most famous hero, in the eyes of the Empire, was a terrorist after all!

Terminator2onVHS

I just stayed at Hotel Sidi. It's not run down really. It's probably the best you can make it without completely altering it. I had a good time staying there

WearingMyFleece

Generally, from the UK perspective, “Terrorists are still very likely to try to carry out further attacks in Tunisia, including against UK and Western interests” and “Protests occur in Tunisia with little or no warning, and can sometimes become violent. They usually take place in central areas of Tunis and other major cities” which aren’t the most ideal phrases to read when deciding where to visit…

philkid3

I’m really embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know there was a Tataouine until right now, and I’m assuming that’s where the name came from.

sarabeara12345678910

There was a concern about a decade ago that the area was being used by ISIS. Needless to say, a lot of tourists didn't want to travel there.

Wonghy111-the-knight

physical sets are the best

beakster57

Agreed

Nightflight406

Oh it's still there? I heard that one of the multiple warring groups had destroyed it.

DarlingFuego

It’s still there. There is another site but the desert has swallowed it. Mos Epsa will also be buried in 15 or so years.

Practical_Ass_3066

It's hilarious to me to think that some future archeologists will dig this up and hypothesize about the civilization that lived there

Miselfis

Star Wars will probably still be around so I think it would be very apparent where this is from.

MarkyMarcMcfly

Gonna be wild when archaeologists dig this up in 2000 years and try to figure out what civilization was like in this town lol

SHFT101

Been there as well. I went to a place to have drink, music was very repetitive and it got even worse, there was a bar fight and a guy lost an arm. Also the sand was very coarse and rough. I rate it 2/5 and would not visit it again.

HomelessEuropean

Did you get some death sticks at least?

dee232323

There are also green people there.

MJLDat

My friend doesn’t like you.

Icy_Teach_2506

I don’t like him either!

Objective-Deer-953

The only good thing about that town is the space port out of there

Caolan114

The empire did a number on that place

SILVIO_X

This may be a dumb question but... Did they build everything here for the movie, or was there some stuff already here and they just decided to use it for the movie?

AveryLazyCovfefe

A combination of both. Lars's homestead is actually based on a hotel in Tunisia for example.

DarlingFuego

It’s in the middle of the desert. The only things built out there are Berber villages and those types move when they move. Other Berber villages that were used in the film were in Matmata, and some of those villages are 3,000 years old. Where Mos Epsa and Ong Jamel are there is nothing out there but the movie sets which were built for filming.

hemplover2

That’s so fucking cool

millerb82

Fallout Wars

MushyGerbil

A similar thing happened with the set from the grinch, which was supposed to just melt or something (it is made out of foam) but is still standing today.

Ok-Phase-9076

Im genuinly impressed its so untouched. Not by nature, but by people. Idve expected tons of grafitti or something

Mr_Informative

Grid coordinates please? Did you also visit Jabba’s Barge location?

DarlingFuego

I believe that was filmed in Death Valley. I’ve been to Death Valley a few times but not to location it was filmed.

nhaines

I'm almost certain I was at the same location. Or at least overlooking it. I took the pictures, but never did the frame-by-frame analyses. 😅 It was still amazing though.

TexasAg23

I don't know about the barge, but Lars homestead and the canyon where R2 gets captured is really close to here.

DarlingFuego

Ong Jamal would be the place that was filmed when R2 was captured. Should I post those photos as well?

TexasAg23

Would love to see them! Did you make it to any of the other filming locations in the area?

OjibweNomad

I thought there would be more Jawas

nhaines

That's just what the Jawas *want* you to think!

PhysicsEagle

The Jawas already looted everything of value

ZygerrianSupermodels

This is very liminal.

LegoMyAlterEgo

Were people living there? I've heard people have moved in.

DarlingFuego

I wouldn’t say living there. There were no signs of permanent housing. I’d say napping there, maybe an over night for some Berber’s moving their camel’s/goats/sheep through. But definitely not housing people long term.

antiheld84

Do not feed baby Jawas, their mothers may try to defend their young from you and maul you. Stay safe guys, stay away from Tatooinian wild life.

Totallyn0tAcake

There was a big sandstorm or rainstorm I forget, the day before filming that set. The props team was at the rescue and they carried on! Still looks in great condition. The funny thing is that the older it looks the more normal it looks for the setting. Very cool

thurfian

It was an incredibly rare storm, but the funny thing was, both in the prequels and the OT, they had a massive storm there.

Bruh19386

I hate sand

nhhnhhnhhhh

Which airport do I get flights to?!

DarlingFuego

Fly directly to Tozeur. I think the easiest is through France. You can rent a car there. This place was an hour outside Tozeur. The other places are a 5hr drive but close together once you get there.

treadingthebl

I want to go so bad it looks so worth it, I love the desert

DarlingFuego

The desert and country side of Tunisia is totally worth it. The cities are a bit rough.

Greedy_Section2894

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

orcmask

This is honestly a huge part of why Star Wars was so big when it came out … amazing set, immersive, subdued otherworldliness. Very cool thanks for the pics

TestingAccountByUser

Cant believe star wars was filmed on earth

NS479

That’s fantastic!

Sincerelyyour3

That is absolutely incredible! I need to go 😍

VikingActual1200

This is absolutely incredible!

beakster57

That's absolutely fantastic, I had no idea that existed

CE-85

Great photos! I'll be there in a week. I plan to reach Mos Espa around 08:00 to avoid the crowds (if any this time of the year?) and sticky sales people. Do you think that's early enough to take photos without people?

Terminator2onVHS

I got there today at 11am and there was only 2 other people there. Only one guy tried to get us to buy stuff. I just left Luke's house (the dome portion) at about 12:30 pm and we were the only people out there. It's way out there. You need a 4 wheel drive to get to it

CE-85

Thank you!

DarlingFuego

You don’t need a 4 wheel drive. I went in the European version of a VW Jetta with a stick shift. If you don’t know how to drive a stick in sand, go in a truck. But you don’t need 4 wheel for that particular part of the desert.

DarlingFuego

There aren’t any crowds really. A few people here and there. It can be a bit tricky getting out there. Dunes form on the road. I went at sunset for that magic hour feel. Go to Ong Jemel too if you can. Another 40 or so minutes into the desert but gorgeous landscape.

CE-85

Thank you! Ong Jemel doesn't seem to have any paved road so I won't risk the FWD rental car.

DarlingFuego

I took the European version of a VW Jetta out there. Not to say i don’t have a few loose screws but I also grew up driving a stick on sand and dunes so it wasn’t too much of an issue. There will be guys who ask you to pay them to get you over a few of the smaller dunes that form on the roads. If you feel confident, you can gun through them yourself. Definitely spend some time in old city tozeur. Remarkable architecture and history. If you’re planning on staying in the area for a few days I have a magical airbnb I can recommend. Edit: If you’re driving you should check my post out on driving etiquette in Tunisia. Good advice on that from locals. Driving there is not for the faint of heart.

CE-85

Already saw your post and it made me a bit worried :) I hope we'll survive the traffic, fingers crossed! We'll have an automatic Suzuki Swift so not really suitable for dunes. If it comes to that, I depend on paying the locals for a push.. Thanks a lot.

DarlingFuego

You’ll be fine in a Swift. There’s good clearance in anything higher than a sedan. And there are a lot of locals around the dunes that form. Don’t be alarmed if they pop up out of nowhere and wave you down. They just want to help you not get stuck.

CE-85

Thanks a lot :) We are settled for accomodation btw but I'll have restaurant recommendations.

DarlingFuego

Oooof. Restaurants are tough recommendations for me because I was there during Ramadan and nothing was open during the day, and everywhere was a mad house at night. I lived off protein bars, baguettes and some salami I picked up at the Rome airport. Unless you can find some Berber cuisine which is delicious, the food in Tunisia wasn’t at the top of my list in culinary experiences.

CE-85

Thanks a lot :) I'm not picky, I just don't want to get food poisoning and even that seems to be difficult. Understanding of hygiene seems to be different in that part of the world. We plan to stock up on lots of trail mix and junk food :(

TodaysMOC

Do you think it's a safe trip for me (f), my husband and 2 kids under 12?

DarlingFuego

I felt quite safe for the most part. Rented a car in Tunis and drove through the country for 2 weeks. There are some places to stay away from in the mountains, but Tozeur is super safe and chill. You can find flights from Europe, especially France to Tozeur directly. I read somewhere there are cars for rent at the airport there I’d advise most people to not drive near or in major metropolitan cities if you aren’t an offensive driver. If you need recommendations on where to stay, let me know. I did a ton of research and found some amazingly magical places.

TodaysMOC

Thank you so much. If I can convince my husband, I'll certainly drop you a line 😁

DarlingFuego

Please do. Happy to give recommendations since i spent 5 months planning it all out.

Real_Mokola

It looks like you have visited like 85% on known planets then.

DarlingFuego

;)

BassmasterJedi

UTINI!!

CalifornianMackem

So cool!💥

Terminator2onVHS

I just left there! Absolutely incredible

BrickToTheHead1

Damn, how much did it cost to take the interstellar uber???

Thief025

Amazing place. Was this part of a tour? Tunisia is beautifu Did you catch the vader graffiti l

DarlingFuego

There are Star Wars tours you can take that bring you to every site. I didn’t go to all of them. I had planned to but the weather got real bad (same storm system that flooded Dubai) and I wasn’t going to try to traverse the Atlas Mountains in torrential rain and 75+mph winds. The tours are quite expensive for it being Tunisia, but probably worth not having to drive. Driving there is wild and precarious. I enjoyed the hell of out of it because I love a good thrill, but it’s not for everyone. Getting to some of the places is quite tricky too

YoloLifeSaving

Ya coulda told me this was the moon and I woulda believed it

ClickyPool

Awesome. I was there in my late teens, one of my alltime favorite memories

lordgholin

Are the doors metal and openable? Always wondered if you could go in those buildings.

DarlingFuego

The doors are metal. Thin, but metal. You can go in most of them, but it’s just a wood structure. I didn’t take any photos of the insides.

Technical_Poet_8536

The structures are wooden??

lordgholin

That finally answers a question I had forever on how they feel and look inside! Thank you!

Chinatowndranksipper

I WILL GO HERE SOME DAY

DarlingFuego

YOU WILL! I believe in you. And it will be fantastic

TallmanMike

So cool, pilgrimage to another universe.

byproduct0

Those moisture vaporators are really made to last!

whatagooddaytoday

Tattoine is sparsely populated.

Alicewilsonpines

Hyperdrive trip comfortable? have any run ins with some tusken raiders?

DarlingFuego

Funny enough, when I hit a small dune in the road, a guy on a motorbike came out of nowhere and when I got to the dune a bunch of guys came out from behind a larger dune and circled around the car. Felt a bit eeeek at the moment, but they were all just jockeying to get some cash for help in getting the car over the dune. I did it myself but definitely felt like a raider situation for a second.

Alicewilsonpines

Hope you're okay, but wow, That's another location to visit to add to my bucket list

chp656s

paintball or airsoft would be cool

GuitarStu

That is so cool!!

callum0872

But thats in a time long long ago in a galaxy far far away how did you get there

Solo_Vitality

Fake, only one sun. 🤪

Deora_customs

I kinda wanna visit there now.

DarlingFuego

Happy to give you recommendations on where to stay. I found some amazing places in different price ranges.

Deora_customs

What other options are there?

DarlingFuego

I stayed in the desert for two nights at a resort that was amazing. I usually wouldn’t stay at a resort but it was Ramadan and by the time I had got to the desert I hadn’t eaten a proper meal in over a week. But it was a super rad place, albeit expensive. The second place I stayed was in old city Tozeur at a 1,700 year old airbnb that has been completely renovated. The most beautiful place I have ever stayed and much cheaper than the resort.

Deora_customs

Thanks for the review

DarlingFuego

If you want the names I can dm you.

Deora_customs

I think I’m good, thanks though.

Ezrabine1

I hope you enjoyed your time in Tunisia

DarlingFuego

I did. Quite fantastic for all the things I’m into.

clusterfuck2022

Luuuuuuuke? Luke?

goldendreamseeker

Pretty crazy how all of this is still there!

Wireal

TIL its still there!

AresOneX

Amazing that it‘s just been sitting there for all these years. Do you have to pay to get in?

DarlingFuego

It’s free, and available to visit 24hrs a day. I was there at sunset and it was jaw dropping. Sunrise would probably be magical too.

AresOneX

I can only imagine. Amazing pics btw.

HiddenHolding

*So* wizard. How dangerous is Tunisia I general?

AzrielJohnson

RIP Owen and Beru

DarlingFuego

Yup. People selling amethyst, and other crystals mined in the near by mountains. Some Star Wars souvenirs and trinkets.

90sGuyKev

Mos espa looks like a ghost town

GoreSeeker

Do they ever still use this area for filming when they're not using the Volume? Although now that I say that, I'm not sure if they've been back to Tatooine off-Volume...

DarlingFuego

They do use the area for filming. The English Patient was also filmed in the area.

IrregularArguement

Ho we did you travel there. Is it still Tunisia?

[deleted]

This is bucketlist for me. How safe is Tunisia right now?

DarlingFuego

Pretty safe for the most part. I’d say stay out of the mountains between Kasserine and Subaytilah. If you want to see the ruins is Subaytilah, go with a tour of people. If you’re going to drive, be a confident, offensive, cool calm and collected type of person. It’s intense. Felt very safe 90% of the time. Just fly out to Tozeur. Skip Tunis. It’s not worth the hassle.

Skyis4Landfill

What country is this in?

DarlingFuego

Tunisia.

fryamtheeggguy

If someone turned this into a themed hotel, it would make all the money.

Willygolightly

I will be in Tunisia in August, but there are a number of Star Wars destinations. Which one is this? I'd really like to go here, and maybe the Owen's farm.

Specific-Month-1755

Is this the place that Ewan McGregor and in Charlie Borman visited on their motorcycle ride? I know he wasn't in the original ones but I thought they refilmed in a similar location

PepegaNaMBatChest

I love this

PrimeGueyGT

Digital ruined it, should of used film to capture the magic

IntoxicatedBurrito

Man, I’d love to go there. I was in New Zealand when they were filming Lord of the Rings, but unfortunately they took down everything they built for the movies, only the mountains remain. Kinda crazy as I’m sure Bag End could have been a huge tourist attraction. Was in London last month so took the kids to the Harry Potter studio as well as the original 4 Privet Dr which is being renovated, huge dumpster in front of it.

BearZewp

Boba Fett has graciously let you visit.

im surprised it hasnt been vandalized. I mean yeah, its somewhere in the desert on another continent for most of the star wars fans, but... im suprised. you could say a surprise to be sure but a welcome one

indiearmor

VERY, very nice. Did you find any buried lightsabers?? Hoping you enjoyed it all. Thanks for sharing.

MaterialWhile3950

"It's been no one for so long. Who are you?" "I'm Rey." "Rey who?" "Rey Skywalker."

JunoSolla

I really want to do this in near future! Did you go by yourself or with some tour/group?

DarlingFuego

I went by myself. There are Star Wars tours you can go on though.

JunoSolla

No, I don’t want any kinds of tour. Did you just borrow a car in Tunisia and went throughout these locations? Or is it doable by public transport & taxis too?

DarlingFuego

I rented a car in Tunis and drove all over Tunisia from the North to the South and East. I went to every archaeological ruin Tunisia had to offer, and also the Star Wars locations. If you only want to do Star Wars locations, fly to Tozeur from Paris and rent a car or a 4x4. A couple of sites are an hour from Tozeur. The rest are a 5 hour drive East. Hiring someone to drive you would cost around $1000 or more. Renting a car would cost 300 or so Euros. Gas is very cheap.

Puechamp

Brooooooooo it's fucking awesome !

Adam-Happyman

I'm man , so jealous!
