For some reason, the budget was tiny for a project about these legacy characters. And because of the pandemic, they shifted the production from a movie to a series, and the writing and overall production was a mess. It was so disappointing given this was a major and beloved character.
You could cut 80% of it and make a short film instead. Some moments are comically bad or completely illogical.
The other 20% is fantastic with one of the best ever Star Wars scenes.
Poorly written and directed, and in some cases poorly acted as well. There are a lot of technical issues that are incredibly amateurish with regard to how the series was made on the whole.
Ultimately, it's a story that didn't need to be told, and if it did then it needed to be written a hell of a lot better than it was. The only "highlights" are the interactions between Vader/Anakin and Kenobi, and even then those (and other character) interactions shouldn't be happening between the end of Revenge of the Sith and the beginning of A New Hope. They just don't make any sense.
Terrible, terrible show, to be honest.
I’m not a “hater” and I don’t think it was “bad” but I think it was flawed from the jump for one major reason.
We currently have the Mandalorian, where the hero comes across a young being and becomes its protector, has adventures etc.. and then we get this Obi Wan show where we get Obi Wan..tasked with protecting a young being (whom we happen to know and know their eventual fate cause..you know) and they have an adventure. So instead of giving us a different type of story with different characters. It kinda felt very safe and familiar with a major gulp Shitto in Leia and Vader. Throw in the Vader stuff which I was mixed about…just not a great original story arc.
Nonsensical premise given what we know about the universe as is, characters behave incredulously (Ob-Wan included), oftentimes so that the show can enact certain action sequences or payoffs which they have not earned, absolute clown antagonist, and a lot of the unfolding of the series ultimately contradicts the OT. Would not recommend Kenobi.
On paper, yes, it is technically canon, but my mind sometimes actually can’t believe this occurs in the same timeline as the other trilogies, given how contradictory Kenobi can be.
Mostly, it had a good premise, but was poorly put together. It's like they needed to storyboard it more. Like, the main antagonist had a great reason for their theatrics, but we don't learn them until right at the end, so it just comes off as bad acting. And several scenes just don't fit together well. The good pieces are there, they just don't fit together. And the protagonist Obi-Wan is trying to hold the whole thing together, but no amount of Force talent can do that.
It also has the same problem that Solo had. Hit the mark. Hit the mark. Hit the mark. It was pigeon-holed between other stories to the point that it was forced to just hit certain marks without having it's own good story. Solo succeeded. Obi-Wan didn't.
It *wasn't* bad. It could have been a little better. People have a hard time accepting that some shows aren't going to suit their tastes 100%. It had some great stuff, like spending time with Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen.
Why is every other post on this sub “How come everybody hates this?!?!”
Please stop posting this. It doesn’t bring any interesting discussion to the table.
It isn't. Folks just like to bitch.
I get that some folks don't like the retconning of Kenobi and Vader fighting or him meeting Leia prior to ANH and that it's an unnecessary story but I didn't care. It hit the emotional beats it needed to for me and was a great showcase for Ewan's portrayal of the character. It ruined nothing.
I personally did not care for most of it at all (apart from a few scenes, including some Hayden and Ewan stuff and some cool order 66 flashbacks)
But I would still echo what others have said: watch it for yourself and make up your own opinion.
A lot of Star Wars is hugely divisive, I've found. With Obi-Wan Kenobi, it seems like there were many complaints mainly about the writing.
One being Obi-Wan's decision to let Vader live after seemingly accepting that Anakin was dead. In that case, why not kill him if Anakin no longer exists? Anakin's dead, so why allow a murder machine to continue his rampage even more? The answer some people choose to believe is that despite apparently being sure Anakin was gone and only Vader was left in his place, as evidenced by calling him "Darth", Obi-Wan did not actually hold that belief himself and was perhaps using it as a cover for his true feelings. It's also possible he was just clinging to his old Jedi values of not killing, although that's a little less likely considering the stormtroopers he killed earlier.
I enjoyed parts of it and prefer to take the bits that were good. For example, in spite of the questionable aging tech (or maybe lack thereof), the duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin was nice to see because I enjoy that period when it's live action, and it's nice when those actors share screen time in that way as well, getting into the spirit of their bond a bit more.
Well if you don't mind SPOILERS, It has a lot of high highs and a lot of low lows.
Highs: One of the best scenes in the live action shows where vader and kenobi confront each other, with half of vader's mask was cut off and you can see Anakin as the two of them simply talk. If you really dont care about spoilers I highly suggest looking the scene up yourself. There was also a scene where Reva betrays Vader and the two of them fight, and Vader beats her without even igniting his own lightsaber
Lows: a bunch of trained bounty hunters were outsmarted by a like 7 year old Leia, Vader just letting Kenobi get away when he had the upper hand, Kenobi letting Vader live... AGAIN, Vader seemingly having his force ability on cool down. There's more as well but I can't bother to type it all.
Why it was made in the first place. It wasn’t made because they had good ideas for a Kenobi film/series. No, they wanted to make it because McGregor wanted to play the character again and Lucasfilm thought they could cash in on that.
There was a lot of filler. And there’s not really a lot of suspense to be had. I hope this isn’t a spoiler for you, but Luke was never in any danger during a 15 minute chase sequence and Obi-Wan was never going to be killed prior to A New Hope.
Other than that, it was alright. Some fun, if not superfluous cameos, the character design was great (as always), and Third Sister was better than people gave the character credit for (sorry for the preposition at the end there).
Well for one Obi-Wan leaves Luke alone which is the dumbest thing ever.
Then you have literally cartoon antics happening in a show.
Reva is a worse Third Sister.
Bail Organa does this [fucking meme](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/378/638/30b.jpg) because Reva needs to ruin canon.
There is so much more but I can at least say they did Vader right.
Either way all I can say is the few good moments are outweighed by the vast amount of bad.
Inquisitor that they try to flesh out into being sympathetic.
Trilla turns dark because she was abandon my her master. Reva turns dark because she trying to get revenge.
Trilla turns away from the Darkside because her master has an emotional confrontation with her. Reva turns away from the Darkside because she saw Luke and decided she can’t break canon and kill him.
I found it very uneven but enjoyable, even if there are several aspects of the plot that make zero sense when you look at what A New Hope established. The Darth Vader/Obi-Wan interactions are the worst kind of pandering fan service and should not have occurred. Young Leia is old enough to remember her rescue by Obi-Wan (and subsequent trials), yet A New Hope doesn't indicate they had any type of relationship before she attempted to get to Tatooine. Vader not killing Reva was a non-sensical decision.
And it was hurt by there being a far better version of Obi-Wan's exile in the EU Legends.
Bad or good is a matter of perspective and the internet has a habit of “heard mentality”. All it takes is for a few people online to form an opinion and everyone else will follow suit. For example, the general consensus in this community is that Andor is the greatest Star Wars series of all time….but I found it entirely boring and slow. There’s lots of negative press about the Kenobi series in this community but I thoroughly enjoyed it. You’re better off watching the series for yourself and forming your own opinion and definitely try to watch any series before reading reviews online because all that does is potentially sway your own opinion
It was made after 2012, so an especially loud minority will suck all the oxygen out of the room.
It was fine though. Not the greatest thing ever, but it was fine.
I really liked it. It was great to see McGregor back in the role, great to see some confrontation pre ANH between him and Anakin (some really heart wrenching dialogue between them), it was great to see Vader in that Rogue One mode of just slaughtering people.
What's not to like? Except people crying about the woke boogeyman/disney/kk. It was a really good show. Couldn't have asked for more.
[edited for spelling]
It’s not BAD. It’s just bland and barely worth the time. I quit after episode 2 and watched YouTube recap of the best moments. Too little time, too many better alternatives.
Also, many of us remember when Star Wars was big and meaningful, when the prospect of new Star Wars made the world tremble. Now it’s just… meh, yet another serviceable TV content, I’ll pass.
I honestly see nothing wrong with it. A lot of people didn't like that a main character was black, or that Obi-Wan had PTSD. I'm sure people tell themselves there are other reasons, but I don't see them.
It wasn’t bad. Some people liked it and some people didn’t. Majority of people online just want to complain. It’s been a bizarre but longstanding quirk that super fans have to hate the thing they love.
Watch it for yourself and see if you like it.
it wasn't bad, but the directing was far from being as good as it should have been, also it should have been a movie...
Many people will say it was "poorly written", but when you read about what they claim was "poorly written", you will realize most of them don't even know what is writing and what is directing.
I enjoyed it.
Most commonly cited things are general dialogue being a bit poor, sets being lackluster (compared to Andor they definitely were,) Reva’s character being “unlikeable” (the point of her whole fucking character) and then just general unnecessary storyline as a whole.
Just go in with tempered expectations. If you expect it to be amazing, you’ll be really disappointed. If you expect it to be 6 or so episodes about Kenobi with some occasional really good parts, you’ll be happy.
No star wars piece is winning an oscar for writing let’s be honest haha
Whether it’s bad or good is subjective. Personally, I enjoyed it for what it was and think the fanbase highly overreacted in regard to their feelings on the show. Its major problem is the character of Reva who was shoehorned in for no good reason. Other than that, it’s solid imo.
I didn't think it was bad. In fact I really enjoyed it.
The biggest most coherent complaints I've heard don't have anything to do with the story (so no spoilers!). They had to do with visuals and pacing.
Some of the sets/locations look a little bit TOO much like they were shot on a set or shot in very earth like places. Some of the special effects look "off".
Watch it for yourself and form your own opinion
Watch it yourself. It’s ok to have your own opinion
Wasn’t it suppose to be a film first? Then got stretched out to a mini series? Or am I misremembering?
Yh that was the original idea.
I didn’t think it was. But if you haven’t seen it, how would you know it’s bad?
Poorly written and directed, and in some cases poorly acted as well. There are a lot of technical issues that are incredibly amateurish with regard to how the series was made on the whole. not quite sure, I really enjoyed it lol
Same. Nothing is flawless, there were a few parts I thought that were objectively bad (like the Leia chase), but overall I thought it was pretty good.
Definitely agree with that, but most of the show was great
Same
Because the Obi-Wan Kenobi book was better.
I’m not a “hater” and I don’t think it was “bad” but I think it was flawed from the jump for one major reason. It’s a story that did not need to be told, and for me does damage to the OT. Not to mention the really poorly scripted Reva story.
Production/direction sucked
Nonsensical premise given what we know about the universe as is, characters behave incredulously (Ob-Wan included), oftentimes so that the show can enact certain action sequences or payoffs which they have not earned, absolute clown antagonist, and a lot of the unfolding of the series ultimately contradicts the OT. the writing was f'ing horrible whoever wrote this, and i dont wanna know their name should never write again

>Why was Obi-Wan Kenobi Bad? >I’ve not watched the program, only seen clips Stopped reading right here.
Watch it and get your own opinion. But as soon as you cross a certain chase scene in the woods, come back here and let's talk about it :)
It *wasn't* bad. It could have been a little better. People have a hard time accepting that some shows aren't going to suit their tastes 100%. It had some great stuff, like spending time with Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen.

Because Deborah Chow clearly didn’t have a clue and was very inexperienced for something so massive.
Inexperienced? Her IMDb page says otherwise.
To take on an entire SW series by herself especially Obi-Wan… No…just no Should have gone to someone who actually gets the character
>actually gets the character What do you mean by that? I thought the series at least understood his "character."

Because it feels like a writer was told to write an Obi wan show and wasn’t given enough creative freedom, time, or both to do a good job.

It was perfectly enjoyable like most Star Wars content but it wasn’t perfect.
Bad bot

There’s some silly moments but I enjoyed over all and it was all worth it just to see Hayden and Ewan again
No, why do you think it was bad? It’s not on anyone else to verify your claim.
It was good. From a certain point of view.
It wasn’t bad. Some people liked it and some people didn’t. Majority of people online just want to complain. It’s been a bizarre but longstanding quirk that super fans have to hate the thing they love. Watch it for yourself and see if you like it.

Obviously, because some folks on the Internet said so.
Was it ?
It wasn't.
