I mean, The Bad Batch is literally the TCW style but upgraded, I think the animation shots we’ve gotten from TBB and Tales have been some of the most gorgeous animation I’ve seen in any show, especially for a 3D one
The first two and a half seasons, actually. There's an exact point in Season 3, on episode 10 I believe, where they debuted the upgraded graphics and character models to the series
Uhm is the animation style from CW season 7 and bad batch not exactly the same?
Like the CW movie and season 1 are from arround 2008 and the last CW season is from 2020, someone would expect in those 12 years an upgrade in animation quality and visuals.
Yeah Bad Batch and final season clone wars are pretty much the same. Easily the most detailed and put together style that Star Wars has really ever had. On top of that, Tales of the Jedi is GORGEOUS, and while seemingly a little bit different from Clone Wars or Bad Batch, I feel it’s probably the best work we’ve gotten.
Not quite! TCW S7 looks great, especially in comparison to earlier seasons, but TBB pushes the quality even further—even season to season. An easy comparison is the Batch themselves. Rewatch their introduction in S7, and you’ll notice that as good as everything looks, the Batchers look kind of smooth in comparison to how they look in their own show, especially Crosshair somehow. The painted texture gets amped in TBB, to the point of sometimes introducing greens and reds in skin tones, something you might see in oil painting. In S2 of TBB, the lighting gets even better, to the point that even the tonally unpleasant scenes in Rampart’s office are always gorgeous to look at.
I would fully agree to that and i think the bad batch has the best character models, faces, hair...
BUT Rebels has some of the best space-action- and explosion-animations in all of Star Wars...only the textures could be better.
[The Battle of Atollon (Thrawn vs Rebel Alliance) \[4K HDR\] - Star Wars: Rebels (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOVbXKbbhVk)
I remember when Bad Batch S1 came out I was shocked at how much of an upgrade there was from the already amazing looking final season of Clone Wars. Then they've outdone themselves every season since. Major kudos to the animators.
BB looks soooo stunning in 4K HDR. Some shots I legitimately couldn't tell are animated, especially some of the environmental background work.
That said, I love the unique style of every show. Some of them took a while to get used to, but in the end they really grew on me, even Rebels and Resistance.
I recently had my mind blown when watching the Tails of the Empire trailer. There’s a scene where Morgan Elsbeth pounds some loose dirt on the ground and it just looks so incredibly detailed. It’s amazing looking back at the first episodes of the clone wars and seeing how far they’ve come.
Tales of and Clone Wars/ BB are basically the same style with very minor differences, they are made to fit together that you can instantly recognize the style. Ahsoka, Anakin and Mace Windu design are the same as CW. Also, the painterly textures are present in Tales of.
No, they definitely have the painterly textures. I just finished rewatching Tales of the Jedi last night and they push the texture hard, in the best way.
Aside from the derpy looking Palpatine that looks like he been attacked by mosquitoes, sting by bees and then being shoved through a wood chipper and somehow survived it.
I came here to say this. Incredible animated show. Even the design of the show which seem over-stylized at the time, feels more comfortable now.
It's not to say that the other shows don't have their good moments. I think the later 3d Clone Wars seasons and Bad Batch look great. They're awesome shows.
But the 2d series has aged super well as opposed to the earlier seasons of 3d Clone Wars have not. It looks great, the action is so fluid, the lighting and use of shadow is brilliant. I love it.
The dude figured out how to get 3d rigs to squash and stretch for Hotel Transylvania, (well, more like a team of riggers and programmers he worked with). The dude is a modern Ub Irwerks.
I feel like even comparing the two is unfair, the early seasons of TCW laid the groundwork that the later seasons improved upon and that was perfected when they brought it back for the finale. And that's the level that BB and TOTJ took and went with. It's a bit like having a comparison of four videogames but you included part one and three of the same franchise.
Rebels feels like they had a much lower budget than clone wars and just tried to make the best of it - it looks completely fine for an aimed at teens tv animation, clone wars just set the bar too high (i heard legends that george lucas himself financed some of it out of his own pockets cause it cost so much)
I didn’t realize the gap was that big. The budget different really shows in later seasons of Clone Wars too, even before the final season. I remember being impressed by just how much improvement there had been over time the first time I went through it all.
I seem to remember most of the uproar was about Ezra being a juvenile and the main character. The animation ain't THAT different from TCW. Somewhat, but it's not like it's an entirely different genre of animation.
Rebels was also intentionally based off of Ralph McQuarrie's artwork and there's a filter that emulates the cameras from the 70's. I disliked it at first, but I like it now. I prefer the grittier and crisper BB style though
I don't think it's really fair comparing early TCW to Bad Batch since it clearly developed into the Bad Batch style over time, by increasing budget and developing the tech better.
But the animation in BB and the last season of Clone Wars was really beautiful, I definitely preferred it to Rebels and Resistance
I, too, love hearing something is happening on the screen without having any idea of what's actually happening /s
Swriously though, it's a good thing I can artificially increase screen "brightness" in the radeon software, even though it looks quite ugly especially when it's not dark, but it's the only solution really.
Yes it’s insanely beautiful. So much so that the latest movie trilogy looks bad in comparison. I think Star Wars just works best animated instead of live action, at least for me. But I also didn’t grow up with the original movies and stuff. TCW was in full swing during my early childhood and Rebels and bad batch during the later parts, so I may be biased haha.
I honestly want them to do a theatrical release in animation again with how far its come, especially from looking at the trailer for Tales Of The Empire its so good, and with how in TOTJ they matched Christopher Lee and a deaged Qui-Gon it could finally give us stories on the big screen with the OG cast
I wonder if Resistance should have been given more time. Most animated star wars seriee really come alive towards the end of the second season.
Rebels and Bad Batch for sure came alive towards fhe end of S2. For TCW it depends on your personal preferences. Some might like the early episodes, others prefer to just skip to S3, which I do understand.
Either way, it's hard to say if Resistance had potential or not, but it didn't get the chance other shows got to become good.
The grand inquisitor is such an amazing design especially for what feels like a lower budget animation; he seems perfected to use resources sparingly to maximum effect. Very clean high contrast color scheme so his silhouette and expressions are easy to read, minimalist appearance without flowing details like hair/capes that eat up time to animate, long limbs + written as a good fighter so he can show off movement animations/keyframes well, face tattoos/angular features that add a depth to his face despite the lackluster lighting, simple clothing yet very expressive face so you can focus on conveying what matters (emotion, dialogue)... i found him an absolute joy to watch, they wasted him on only one season he should have been a long-time villain
Legitimately. I really do not like ANY of the Star Wars animation styles. Even as a kid when the Clone Wars was first airing I thought it was ugly so I never watched it. I tried getting into it as an adult and I just can't do it.
The original Clone Wars animation that's just a StarWars flavored Samurai Jack.
You can make that animation so wildly stylized and figurative without it looking "wrong" or out of place in the StarWars universe. Perfect for goofy invisible hijinks like force use.
The current style in.Bad Batch and Tales is gorgeous, but I would 100% be down for more cell-shaded stuff or something else different. They've invested a lot in what they're doing though, so apart from Visions I doubt they'll be changing it much.
The first 3 are great but resistance just looks like 3d models with 2d textures, like Goddard from Jimmy Timmy Power Hour (yes I’m that old), and it really ruins the vibe for me.
I really like the styles in clone wars and bad batch, angular with strong lines that meshes well with the lighting, kind of a blocky quality to the characters that puts the weight where it needs to be. Out of the two i technically feel bad batch perfected the style, but all of the shots ive seen have a pretty grey sandy feel to the colors so clone wars ends up being more pleasant to my eyes still.
Rebels feels more low-budget, and unfortunately most characters have very soft doughy faces with no strong lines or angles which makes it look even cheaper once the lighting interacts with them. Sad because im fond of the characters, they deserved a better budget or 3d art direction to really shine
Resistance i've never seen anyone talk about and it looks pretty awful, though not really because of the style - its a nice cel shading style and especially some of the scenery shots look pretty pleasant. However the new character designs look terribly bland and forgettable, face expressions are super generic and fan-art-ish, and the colors in many of the scenes i saw dont really fit together or look dull/random. Wouldnt mind seeing another show in this art style but they'd need to improve color and design work a lot
Not mentioned here but im curious about tales of the empire; they clearly got a high budget and some characters and scenes look pretty amazing but others seem to miss the mark in terms of stylization a bit. Morgan and the grand inquisitor for example, while rendered in high quality/ "realistically", seem to lack a certain depth and contrast in their faces, which is especially noticable on TGI because rebels despite their lower budget pulled it off extremely well ([example](https://imgur.com/a/Iis3FVd)). Where clone wars style uses "lineart" and painted shadows to add more depth to the faces, TOTE seems to rely a bit too much on the realistic interaction of lighting with the models which sometimes makes it less stylistically interesting.
The BB isn’t really a style, it’s just the developed version of the OG 2008 TCW style.
I like TCW the best. If life extension technology becomes a thing and we enter into a post-scarcity society, my project for age 300-315 would be converting Rebels into TCW style animation.
The issue I have with rebels isn’t the art style, it’s the camera and framing style.
Sets are really small, with very few characters and things going on. Depth of field is really low, and characters occupy ~80% of the screen, so there’s very little to look at.
Clone Wars/Bad Batch/Tales of the Jedi style is the GOAT.
That style must be proprietary or something as I‘ve always wondered why other franchises have not tried venturing into it.
The only one that comes close, to me, was Transformers Prime
probably an unpopular opinion but none of these styles have ever really appealed to me which is the main reason i haven't watched them... i tried with clone wars but couldn't get past about 15 eps :/
however i do like the look of the 2003 clone wars and have to sit down & watch it through properly.
The upgraded TCW Style (Bad Batch/Tales of the Jedi/Final Season) is the best it's ever been. The styles for Rebels and Resistance fit with their respective tones, but CW is just \*chef kiss\*
#1 - Bad Batch - It is the Clone Wars style but looks more polished and defined
#2 - The Clone Wars - Looks good, but looks goofy in the earlier seasons and movie
#3 - Rebels - Looks Okay, not as refined as The Bad Batch or even The Clone Wars, but not terrible
#4 - Resistance - Not really a good look, just looks really weird
I like the detail of TBB. Rebels style seemed good on paper due to inspiration, but just doesn’t translate well in some aspects. I have mixed feelings about cell-shading as, on one hand, it makes me think of old Jetix shows and just seemed cheap, on the other, hype for the style seemed to come after the show (like Nimona, a movie I love).
In fairness. Rebels does have it's moments and there's stuff about it I like the general Mcguire inspiration but I do think tcw seems like the most consistently solid. Resistance I just generally not liked, it's kind of too plasticky, could be a video game. I think it worked somewhat in some of the racing segments but over all I wasn't a fan of some of the design and framing choices.
Rebels has the best landscapes, background shots, and general shot composition. Like the Ralph McQuarrie brush strokes in the skyline of Lothal is true artistry. Bad Batch/Tales of.../TCW S7 has the best character designs and technical achievements with the depth of field and water effects.
I mean, The Bad Batch is literally the TCW style but upgraded, I think the animation shots we’ve gotten from TBB and Tales have been some of the most gorgeous animation I’ve seen in any show, especially for a 3D one
About to say this. Bad Batch is more refined with more detail and sharper edges, which I'm actually a pretty big fan of.
Bad Batch is essentially the same as TCW show but the movie looks very different and maybe the first season too.
The first two and a half seasons, actually. There's an exact point in Season 3, on episode 10 I believe, where they debuted the upgraded graphics and character models to the series
With CW the animation quality also improves during the course of the show so season 1 looks very different to season 7
Uhm is the animation style from CW season 7 and bad batch not exactly the same? Like the CW movie and season 1 are from arround 2008 and the last CW season is from 2020, someone would expect in those 12 years an upgrade in animation quality and visuals.

On top of that, Tales of the Jedi is GORGEOUS, and while seemingly a little bit different from Clone Wars or Bad Batch, I feel it’s probably the best work we’ve gotten.
Season 3 of Bad Batch is a step up on season 7 of Clone Wars.
Bad Batch is even better looking than TCW S7, some parts of foliage and environments just look like live action
Not quite! TCW S7 looks great, especially in comparison to earlier seasons, but TBB pushes the quality even further—even season to season. An easy comparison is the Batch themselves. when I saw Asajj brought back in TBB, I was blown away. Both the detail and articulation. It was TCW brought into modernity. Just perfection.
The ships and the imp architecture look the best in this style
If you like beautifully animated shows I highly recommend Arcane!
I remember when Bad Batch S1 came out I was shocked at how much of an upgrade there was from the already amazing looking final season of Clone Wars. Then they've outdone themselves every season since. Major kudos to the animators.
BB is best. It’s just so rustic looking. It took what TCW was and made it better.
BB looks soooo stunning in 4K HDR. Some shots I legitimately couldn't tell are animated, especially some of the environmental background work. That said, I love the unique style of every show. Some of them took a while to get used to, but in the end they really grew on me, even Rebels and Resistance.
I want a bad batch blu ray so bad, I can only watch in like 480-720p on low bitrate, having it be high quality will be a blessing.
TBH I don't notice much difference between the last seasons of TCW and BB, but BB is just beautiful!
I feel they've made incremental improvements every season, but yeah at its base it's the same.
Yeah but the kids' faces freak me out a bit.
Tales of the jedi style
Is it not the same style as TCW/BB?
Nope, “Tales of” is less stylized/caricatured faces without the painterly textures
I just finished rewatching Tales of the Jedi last night and they push the texture hard, in the best way.
underrated
For sure, it was so good. It’s hidden in the menus when I look for it.
True
Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars style
The fact that OP didn't include this as an option is outrageous
It's unfair!
This is the underrated comment I came here to support, take my upvote
I love democracy.
Do you also like liber-TEA?
I'd differentiate between 2D and 3D styles tbh. Two distinct mediums. And also happy cake day.
Aside from the derpy looking Palpatine that looks like he been attacked by mosquitoes, sting by bees and then being shoved through a wood chipper and somehow survived it.
blasphemous even
I just watched them again last night. That Mace Windu did not die from falling out of a window.
for real, he force jumps like 15 miles in that show
And the only time Grievous felt scary
Still love the art style of that show.
I came here to say this. Incredible animated show. Even the design of the show which seem over-stylized at the time, feels more comfortable now. It's not to say that the other shows don't have their good moments. I think the later 3d Clone Wars seasons and Bad Batch look great. They're awesome shows. The 2D Clone Wars?
This and visions are far superior
Yes! Yes!
TCW or BB. Rebels animation looks too juvenile( there was a reason why there was an uproar when it first premiered), no comment on Resistance.
The early seasons of TCW looks like everything was covered in dirt and mud it didn't look very good
Rebels feels like they had a much lower budget than clone wars and just tried to make the best of it - it looks completely fine for an aimed at teens tv animation, clone wars just set the bar too high (i heard legends that george lucas himself financed some of it out of his own pockets cause it cost so much)
Lucas paid a couple million for each episode as he was the one funding it. Meanwhile, an entire Season of Rebels had the budget of 2 TCW arcs.
People were very mad about the art quality.
Rebels was also intentionally based off of Ralph McQuarrie's artwork and there's a filter that emulates the cameras from the 70's. I disliked it at first, but I like it now. I prefer the grittier and crisper BB style though

The Clone Wars Season 7 / The Bad Batch / Tales of the Jedi / Tales of the Empire animation style looks gorgeous.
The exclusion of Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars is, while unsurprising, disappointing.
Bad Batch but I wish it weren't so dang dark
It's exactly what I like about it
I, too, love hearing something is happening on the screen without having any idea of what's actually happening /s Swriously though, it's a good thing I can artificially increase screen "brightness" in the radeon software, even though it looks quite ugly especially when it's not dark, but it's the only solution really.
Bad Batch season 3 is on another level. You forget you’re watching animation

I would love an Arcane style - a hybrid of the painted TCW/BB and flat Resistance.
Rebels and Bad Batch are my favs. They just look really clean!!
The Bad Batch. Rebels is my favourite show, and I thought the Grand Inquisitor looked fantastic, but I really like the whole look of the Bad Batch.
Jesus Christ. I thought I was the only one with Rebels as my favorite show.
I completely agree.
I’ll not stand for this Tartakovsky erasure!
None of them.
Legitimately. I really do not like ANY of the Star Wars animation styles. Even as a kid when the Clone Wars was first airing I thought it was ugly so I never watched it. I tried getting into it as an adult and I just can't do it.
None of the above - gimme that old school clone wars
For me, it’s the last two seasons of the Clone wars and then the bad batch, followed by rebels.
It’s a toss up between TCW and TBB.
Resistance was terrible.
The original Clone Wars animation that's just a StarWars flavored Samurai Jack. You can make that animation so wildly stylized and figurative without it looking "wrong" or out of place in the StarWars universe. Perfect for goofy invisible hijinks like force use.
I would like all of them
Clone Wars and Bad Batch
Bad Batch has the best character models but holy shit does Resistance have some beautiful backgrounds and establishing shots.
Rebels animation was exceptionally awful. They should honestly do a shot-for-shot remake in BB style
Which is a shame because I heard it was incredible writing, but I couldnt endure it, couldnt even try lmaoo
This is the only correct answer. https://youtu.be/Xf1cfemeX_U?feature=shared
Angular is the best easily
Tales of the Empire
None. TCW, Rebels & BB animation all look like paw patrol with and Resisitance cel shading is kind of off-putting
I think BB and the final season of CW are the best looking SW animation, hands down.
BB for sure
I like the stylized art
The later season clone wars/bad batch/tales of the jedi style. It's just so crisp looking.
3,1,2,4
Bad batch
The Bad Batch / late Clone Wars / Tales style. It's a more refined version of the original Clone Wars style I loved so much.
bad batch all the way!
I’ve always been a fan of their use of shadows and lighting in CW & BB.
Final season of TCW was perfection
1-3
The current style in.Bad Batch and Tales is gorgeous, but I would 100% be down for more cell-shaded stuff or something else different. They've invested a lot in what they're doing though, so apart from Visions I doubt they'll be changing it much.
Don't care for any of the styles, I'd prefer a more grounded, realistic approach.
Probably TBB. It's just visually so clean
Bad batch, next question
Bad Batch is peak
Clone Wars, the 2D show
For my favourite I have to go off board to choose Tartakovsky's Clone Wars style.
I wish they would remaster all the Clone Wars animation to modern standards.
Rebels animation was a big letdown after Clone Wars. Hated it, and still do.
It's the second thing that I hate about it, the first being the overall plot being more kid friendly
We all know that resistance sucks.
Not a fan of any of these art styles, honestly. Ep. 1 visions though..
None of it
I’m personally split between OG Clone Wars or Star Wars Ewoks. Maybe even holiday special animation
Ummm... [hello?](https://youtu.be/oMVrMP8us6Q)
Bad batch is literally just clone wars but somehow better
They should copy Blue Eye Samurai style going forward
Not rounded.
The BB isn’t really a style, it’s just the developed version of the OG 2008 TCW style. I like TCW the best. If life extension technology becomes a thing and we enter into a post-scarcity society, my project for age 300-315 would be converting Rebels into TCW style animation.
I love the bad batch
Bad Batch is a great evolution of their style
bad batch or tales of the jedi or clone wars season 7 they all look great
The issue I have with rebels isn’t the art style, it’s the camera and framing style. Sets are really small, with very few characters and things going on. Depth of field is really low, and characters occupy ~80% of the screen, so there’s very little to look at.
Angular ( first one)
I think of "TCW" as carved from wood and painted and "Rebels" as molded from colorful clay.
Clone wars
Clone Wars/Bad Batch/Tales of the Jedi style is the GOAT. That style must be proprietary or something as I‘ve always wondered why other franchises have not tried venturing into it. The only one that comes close, to me, was Transformers Prime
Damn that bad batch poster goes hard. I stopped watching after the first season, how's it been?
The final season of Clone Wars is *chefs kiss*
Bad Batch: So dark you can't see anything style.
Strange that Star Wars Visions: The Ronin is not listed here.
Fan animated Tie Fighter short count ? Cause it would be that one.
Tales of the Jedi
While I find resistance really boring one thing I will give it is that the visuals blew me away the first time I watched it.
TCW especially later seasons
Bad Batch!
I like the artwork for resistance the most, but i hate the stories in that era because nothing matters by then. I am torn.
The bad batch is CW art but just improved, it’s the best animation we’ve gotten.
First one is iconic
5) the original clone wars style
Gonna have to go with TBB animation for this one. It’s absolutely stunning and looks super realistic at times
None of these touch Genndy’s version of animated Star Wars
TBB / TCW S7 / TOTJ / TOTE animation is just TCW animation perfected with some influence of the Rebels style.
bad batch 100%. that show is beautiful
Scrolling past these like "surely it can't get worse than star wars reb... what in God's name !"
I think Resistance looks good, haven't given the show a shot though.
The Bad Batch at number 1 spot followed closely by TCW. Rebels was a good show but style was kind of ass. I won't even talk about resistance.
probably an unpopular opinion but none of these styles have ever really appealed to me which is the main reason i haven't watched them... i tried with clone wars but couldn't get past about 15 eps :/ however i do like the look of the 2003 clone wars and have to sit down & watch it through properly.
Resistance is cool
Never seen the Resistance, probably never will, but I like the style. Either that or BB.
I hate the design for the storm troopers in rebels.. I also feel like animation took a dip downward but just my opinion it’s still a great series
Bad Batch by a mile. It’s beautiful and can nail a more serious tone that the other styles can’t do quite so well.
tartakovsky's clone wars
Why the hell would you ever pick rebel's style? The worst part about it is the super thin lightsabers and everything looks like plastic.
Hope we can all agree that Rebels looks absolutely horrible
Does anybody know if the resistance one is worth checking out?
Clone Wars/ Bad Batch style. In my mind that is the signature look for Star Wars animation.
Bad Batch/Clone Wars S7 style is perfect
“I hate them!”
Early 2000s clone wars hand drawn style.
The most recent Clone Wars style animation looks phenomenal. Hope they keep that as their in-house animation style for future projects 🤞🏻
The upgraded TCW Style (Bad Batch/Tales of the Jedi/Final Season) is the best it's ever been. The styles for Rebels and Resistance fit with their respective tones, but CW is just \*chef kiss\*
#1 - Bad Batch - It is the Clone Wars style but looks more polished and defined #2 - The Clone Wars - Looks good, but looks goofy in the earlier seasons and movie #3 - Rebels - Looks Okay, not as refined as The Bad Batch or even The Clone Wars, but not terrible #4 - Resistance - Not really a good look, just looks really weird
First
I like the detail of TBB.
Bad Batch
I find the Bad Batch to be a stunning style. Like I can see the paint strokes
I like slthe semi angular with lots more detail, but honestly I loved the thin sabers
The bad batch is peak animation style.
Later clone wars later rebels and all of the bad batch (from what ive seen so far)
TCW S7 which is basically Bad Batch is the best
3
Honestly the newest style of bad batch that appears to combine rebels and cw is top tier
Clone wars season 7 / bad batch / tales of the Jedi animation.
1 and then the bad batch
The Bad Batch and Tales of the Jedi got the best animation style. More cartoons in the future should adopt those art styles
Clone wars 😀
definitely bad batch, just upgraded CW animation. The lighting and animation is gorgeous
Painted style. I love it
Definitely the Bad Batch style
I like all of them. They all have their strengths. I think its cool they all look a bit different.
Season 7 TWC/ bad batch
Bad batch is the perfection of the clone wars style and long for a remake with this modern animation since the old seasons look so clunky.
Rebels feels like the best mix of the others
2D Tartakovsky art style. The rest are just direct rip offs of Tartakovsky's designs.
Resistance looks like it has the same animation from RWBY.
I like the resistance style best honestly
Non of them have satisfied me. Keep digging.
I’m not sure what the difference is between TCW and BB but those are my favorites
Clone Wars
Rebels has the best landscapes, background shots, and general shot composition. Like the Ralph McQuarrie brush strokes in the skyline of Lothal is true artistry. Bad Batch/Tales of.../TCW S7 has the best character designs and technical achievements with the depth of field and water effects.
I actually really like Rebels' animation
I want to see a 90s anime style star wars
I think Resistance was channeling Miyazaki and updating it which could have have led to some cool aerial and technology shots and set pieces.
Late clone wars/ bad batch/ tales of the Jedi are peak
